Since the mid-1980s, Ethan Gelber has patrolled all corners of the travel industry, but his most regular endeavors are as a freelance writer, editor, communications strategist, content marketer and translator focused on travel and culture. He specializes in family travel, responsible and sustainable travel practices, keeping things local, and quality and relevance in publishing and destination marketing.

His written work, including as a Lonely Planet author, AFAR Ambassador and Huffington Post blogger, has appeared (credited and uncredited) in dozens of print and digital outlets. Other recent entrepreneurial undertakings include his work as the founding editorial director of the Family Travel Association, which inspires more families to travel; co-founding, a community-powered platform for identifying, celebrating and distributing excellent travel content; co-organizing the New York Travel Festival, an immersive event (now in its fifth year) for a new generation of travelers; and editing The Travel Word, a website he founded in 2009 that showcases responsible, sustainable and local travel.

He is also on the Board of Travel Unity, which works to increase diversity in the world of travel, as well as a media member of three groups working to further awareness of responsible travel within the industry -- Travel+Social Good, the Responsible Travel & Tourism Collective and Green Travel Media -- and a strategic advisor to I&I Travel Media, a travel content marketing business.

How did you get involved in travel?

"I got my start in travel as accidental co-director of a Paris-based bicycle tour operator. Since then, I have been founder and president of a non-profit focused on “educational internet adventures”; a staff writer/editor/producer focusing on outdoor lifestyles and responsible travel issues; publications manager of the French government tourist office (Atout France) in NYC; chief communications officer of a global local-travel company; co-founder of an education and networking training workshop for destination marketers; co-conspirator behind a content marketing platform designed to support eco-conscious brands; co-instigator of a platform for people passionate about local travel and plenty more."
