“I'm looking to travel to coastal Croatia at the end of June 2016 with my husband. Interested in all of the different islands and what Split and Dubrovnik have to offer. Looking forward to a chance to explore the options, here!”
Trip planning highlights
Trip planning conversation
Nice to meet you. I'd be happy to help you plan your trip to Croatia! Split and Dubrovnik are both beautiful coastal cities with old towns full of culture and traditions and from here you can island hop between them or just concentrate on islands around Dubrovnik or Split.
Are you looking to move around quite a bit or staying in one or two places for longer?
HI Michelle! I think my husband and I were thinking of trying at least two places maybe 3- since we only have a week. We don't want to spend a ton of our vacation traveling to different locations. From what I have read all of the islands in the area are beautiful!
I would then recommend flying into Dubrovnik, spending two nights there. Then staying in Korcula and/or Lopud for two nights each then spending your last night in Dubrovnik. If this sounds good to you I can help you look at accommodations, are you looking to stay in hotels vs apts? What would be your preference and budget/night. Thanks!
Michelle- could you tell me a little bit more about korca and lopud, as well as why you reccomend Dubrovnik over split? We are looking to spend some time at the beach! Other than that- we would love to have some help w accommodations. I think we would prefer to stay in hotels over apartments with a budget of $100-160 a night. Thanks Michelle!
Actually Dubrovnik and Split are both very similar in terms of culture, history, both easy to get to and to go to other islands from there. Or you can start in Dubrovnik and go to one island in between and then go to Split. There are so many different islands to choose from but Korcula is one of the more popular ones with more options for accommodations and Lopud is a quaint charming island. I can start to look at accommodations for you within your budget.
Sounds great- it will probably be easier for us to fly in and out of the same location because we live in Kentucky and it is kind of a pain to get anywhere... but I look forward to seeing what accommodations you come up with. Thanks for making this such an easy process!
That would make sense! It is a far trip - are you going straight from Kentucky to Croatia or stopping in Europe some place before hand? Will send you accommodation options tomorrow!
We will be going straight to Croatia from Kentucky. I am hoping to buy our flights this week after we see what you have planned! Thank you again for your help!
I am unsure of your exact dates but for the end of June I found the following hotels available that I think you would like, according to your budget, location, amenities available, and reviews:
Hotel Adria for $170/night total for a double room with balcony and a stunning sea view. 1.5 miles from Old Town - nice and quiet. A/C and Wifi, indoor pool, and breakfast are included.
Hotel Lero $160/night total. A/C and Wifi in every room. 20 minute walk to Old Town. Hotel pool, gym, and breakfast included.
Villa Dard $137/night total. 5 minutes from Old Town. One bedroom apt with terrace. A/C.
Hotel Marko Polo $166/night total for a superior queen room with sea view. A/C, Wifi, two swimming pools and walking distance to Korcula town.
Hotel Borik $125/night total for a double room, a/c in main area only, wifi. Right on the beach in Lumbarda a quiet town 10 minute drive outside of Korcula town.
Villa Vilina $162/night total. Right near the harbor, small hotel with terrace with breakfast included, wifi and a/c available.
Heritage Hotel Diocletian $160/night total. Right in Old Town, central location. Wifi and A/C.
Hotel Jadran $140/night total. 15 minute walk from Old Town, modern style rooms, sea view double bed room, breakfast included, a/c and wifi
Please let me know your thoughts and if you would like to reserve! Thank you~
These all look great, I am going to look over them with my husband and we will let you know what we decide. Right now it looks like the least expensive flights are leaving June 19-27. Arriving and Leaving in Dubrovnik, so it might be best to take the Split accommodations out of the equation. I hope to have a decision by the end of the day! Thank you!
I also looked at the lafodia sea resort in Lopud, it looks to be a similar price to Villa Vilina and has a pool- is this a place you would recommend? After looking into Lopud it really looks like a beautiful place.
Sounds good on your dates. I would definitely recommend Lafodia Sea Resort (it was not available for the dates I had previously looked up) so since it is available for your dates. Lafodia Sea Resort the comfort suite is available for a little higher than your budget here on booking.com. Other rooms are available thru the hotels website directly.
Thoughts on the Dubrovnik accommodations?
Hi Michelle, my husband and I just looked at flights and it looks like our best deal is to leave KY, Sunday, June 19th arriving on June 20th in Dubrovnik, and leaving Monday, June 27th EARLY at 7:55 AM. We are thinking of staying in 2 nights in Dubrovnik and Split each and three nights in maybe one or both of the islands. Would this be a ton of travel? Let me know!
Sounds great, so you will fly into Dubrovnik and out of Split.
You could do both Lopud and Korcula but it depends on how much time you want to spend transporting between each place. Between Dubrovnik, Korcula and Split it is very easy by ferry since Korcula is in between the two. To get to/from Lopud to Korcula and Split you must go through Dubrovnik and from Dubrovnik to Split it is a 4.5 hour bus ride. Since Dubrovnik and Split are both busy cities I would recommend staying in one place to take advantage of one island.
Day 1: June 20 arrive in Dubrovnik
Day 2: June 21 Dubrovnik
Day 3: June 22 Korcula/Lopud
Day 4: June 23 Korcula/Lopud
Day 5: June 24 Korcula/Lopud
Day 6: June 25 Split
Day 7: June 26 Split
Day 8: June 27 Leave Split arly AM
Let me know what you think and your thoughts on the accommodations.
Just sent you an article on Korcula
Korcula sounds perfect, we had a feeling it would be a lot to go to more than one island since we will be leaving out of Split. Would it be easy to take a day trip to explore other islands from Korcula, if we wanted to? It looks like Korcula has a ton to offer- I love that there is wine tasting! I am feeling very excited about this.
As for accommodations- Hotel Adria looks great, and in Korcula I was looking at hotel Liburna, it looks like it is approximately $130 a night on booking.com? and the reviews are a little better than Hotel Borik, but I am interested in Hotel Marko Polo as well, and it looks like the rate has gone down on booking.com as well. Heritage Hotel Diocletian looks really cool, but it looks like the prices may have gone up?
Lots of day trip options outside of Korcula, this is taken from the article:
"There are so many different day trip options from Korcula. They all mainly consist of sailing around….
-The Peljesac Strait, sail along the northern coastline of Korcula and out to the archipelago. A 45 minute cruise that departs hourly. You can hop off at one of the different islets, explore hidden rocky swimming areas, snorkel, drink some wine, bring a picnic and return on a later boat.
-The islet of Vrnik, known for the clear blue waters and stone quarries.
-The islet of Badija, famous for the 14th century Franciscan monastery. "
You would have never thought there would be wine tasting on this island but there is! We can also arrange a guided cycling wine tasting tour with a couple from the UK who have lived in Korcula for 5 years now!
Let me take a look at accommodations now~and I'll get back to you asap
For your dates the hotels in Dubrovnik that I recommended are unfortunately no longer available. Due to it being peak travel season and it being almost a month out rooms are selling out quite fast, (rates are subject to change)
I found this hotel that is within your budget:
June 20-June 22
Hotel Petka approx $135/night for a queen bed with sea view and balcony, breakfast included, 20 minute walk to Old Town.
Korcula: June 22 - 25
For Korcula - both the Hotel Liburna and Marko Polo are nice, and yes the rates for Marko Polo went down for your dates.
Hotel Liburna approx $147/night
Hotel Marko Polo it went down to $134/night
Split June 25 - June 27
I like the Heritage Diocletian hotel as well, you can book it through here (to show you've booked through kimkim)
Heritage Diocletian approx $187/night
Just taking a look the past few days at hotels, I would recommend booking fairly soon as rooms are selling out quite quickly. Thanks!
I have gone ahead and booked Heritage Diocletian and I want to book Hotel Petka or Hotel Lero (it looks like the price went down to 131), but I have found both for a lower price on travelocity and before booking I want to see if the pricing will go down on booking.com or not? I am assuming kimkim is somehow connected with booking and I want to make sure my money goes to the right place! I am leaning towards Hotel Liburna so I think I will go ahead and book it- especially if I can get a great deal at Hotel Petka (it looks like a great location). If you could let me know if I should book on booking.com over travelocity, I will go ahead and book ASAP!
Will you help with the booking of our ferry to and from Korcula and/or any other transportation, or is this something we will have to do?
The guided cycling tour in Korcula sounds amazing- I think it is something my husband and I would love to do! It sounds like it could be a really lovely time.
Great, that you booked the Diocletian. I would say go ahead and book Hotel Liburna (I personally would choose that as well from the photos and reviews). As for travelocity price ( I see that it is about $10-$20 lower on the total price than booking.com for both hotels) that is up to you. I do not know if the price will go down on booking.com, all I can say is that we trust using booking.com and work with them well. But in the end this is your trip and up to you!
Ferry tickets is best bought day of there in Croatia.
We can look into arranging other transportation for you there if you'd like?
We can take a look at other activities/tours once you have figured out hotels!
I was thinking the same thing about Hotel Liburna! I wanted to make sure about who I booked with before I made any final decisions- I want to help you for helping me so much! I will go ahead and book now and we can go on from there. Thanks so much again for all of your help, Melissa!
Of course! I should have mentioned that we also make commission when you book with booking.com. (So you would be supporting kimkim) And when you book with booking.com majority of the time they have a free cancellation policy compared to travelocity it offers free cancellation here and there (for a higher cost)
And its my pleasure helping you book your travels! I love traveling and loved Croatia so if I can give that same experience to others (you!) I'll do all that I can!
ps. my name is Michelle. You're not the first person that's done that!
Michelle! I am so sorry, I don't know how I messed that up (lots of multitasking for me today I guess). My sincerest apologies!! I did decide to book through travelocity because that $20 over the whole trip does add up on such a big trip.
Just checking in here to see if you needed any other help for your trip. And if you were still interested in doing the wine and cycling tour in Korcula? See more details below in article.
Hi Michelle! I think we are definitely interested in the wine and cycling tour, do you know the pricing of it? Is there anything else you would suggest we look into, beaches, restaurants, etc?
Also, do you suggest we take Euros with us or the Croatian Kuna with us?
Hi! Even though Croatia is part of the EU, they still use their own currency. So I would suggest you bring Kuna.
The wine and cycling tour is 58 euros/person including the bike rental.
I wrote a few articles on recommendations for beaches, restaurants, things to do in Dubrovnik, Korcula and Split. See them below!
Hi Michelle! I hope you are enjoying a beautiful Memorial Day! I spoke with my husband and we definitely want to go ahead and book the wine and cycling tour- it looks so great, just beautiful. I need to take a look over these articles and plan to do so in the next day or two to see if there is anything else we want to go ahead and plan. Good to know about bringing Kuna, I want to make sure we are prepared. Thanks!
Thanks for asking, I had a great Memorial Day! I am checking on availability and the final total price and will get back to you shortly. Have a great day!
Currently the only time they are available to run a cycling & wine tasting tour is on your last day in Korcula on June 25th, which may be too late depending on when you are departing the island. I am waiting to hear back from them on what other alternative tours they have scheduled while you are there, to see if you would have interest in those as well. Thank you for your patience.
Michelle- How long do the ferries run to Split? I wouldn't be opposed to doing the tour on the last day, but would probably enjoy doing it on a full day. I look forward to see if there are any alternative tours they have scheduled. Thanks!
The last catamaran leaves at 6:20pm arriving into Split at 8:50pm. There is a ferry before this that departs at 2:15pm arriving at 5pm into Split. Will get back to you shortly on alternative tours.
Good to know, would there be a possibility of a cancellation on the bike tour- I didn't realize that it would/could be fill!
Actually they are running the alternative tours during the days you are there and only offering the wine and cycling tour on the 25th. Still waiting to hear back from them and will get back to you soon!
Oh, it looks like on their website that it runs everyday! What a bummer
See below for the alternative tours on the dates you are in Korcula, and let me know what sounds good to you!
We have an evening tour on 22 June visiting the Korta Katarina winery on the Peljesac for wine tasting.
Further information: http://www.korculaexplorer.com/wine-tasting-peljesac/4592160477
On 23 June we have our full day combined boat trip & wine tasting tour on the Peljesac.
Further information: http://www.korculaexplorer.com/combined-boat-wine-tasting/4591143147
No tours available on 24 June.
We can be flexible on 25 June. We usually run the tour at that time of year from 3pm, however if the guests are happy to cycle back from Lumbarda during the day (and don’t mind the heat too much), we can start the tour at 10am, which should give them time to catch the later ferry.
Hey Michelle! Sorry I didn't respond sooner, in my mind I had and I just realized I never did! My husband and I looked over the options and I think we would really like to do the wine and bike tour on the 25th, if they are willing to begin the tour in the morning. We were really looking forward to it and hope they can work something out so we can take the later ferry! Please let me know what we need to do to go ahead and book it!
No worries, I will let them know you would still like to go ahead with the wine and cycling tour on the 25th and get back to you. Thank you!
So they usually start their morning tour at 10:00, finishing around 15:00. But they can start up to an hour earlier if you prefer, so the main part of the ride is done at a slightly cooler hour of the day.
The total cost will be 128 euros ($146 USD) for you both which includes bicycle rental, accompanied guide, wine tasting and snacks at two wineries. I will send you a payment form shortly. Thank you.
Michelle, That all sounds great- I think we would be willing to start an hour earlier if they would like! I have gone ahead and paid for the tour, my husband and I are beginning to feel very excited for our time in Croatia!
Great, received your payment. Thank you and I will be sending the confirmation over shortly. I cant wait to hear about how your trip goes!
Hey Michelle- I have a question about getting to Korcula and Split- especially Dubrovnik to Korcula? I know we once touched on taking a ferry from Korcula to Split but I don't see anything about getting to Korcula? Could you give me some guidance? Do you suggest driving or taking a ferry?
So there are ferries daily to Korcula from Dubrovnik - two hours transit time. Check out the time table here: http://www.korculainfo.com/ferries/ferry-split-milna-brac-hvar-korcula-mljet-dubrovnik/ but it leaves at 4:30pm from Dubrovnik and arrives around 6:30pm into Korcula.
Is that on the second schedule? just want to make sure I am reading the correct schedule!
Yes. You can buy the tickets there at the ferry terminal.
ok is this the same ferry to take to split?
Or this catamaran ferry that leaves daily at 6am arriving into Split at 9am: http://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/schedule/LineSearchResults/Index/2331754/2331792/25062016
but can't do because of the wine and bike tour, correct?
So you would take the evening ferry to Split
so the same ferry for both
Same ferry company
Exactly ~ and
Sorry, didnt mean to type "and"
haha It is okay- I was wondering if there was something else you wanted to add!
Nope that was it!
Perfect, I was looking into the kayaking that you sent a link to in a previous conversation and it looked like the only options were for full day trips. Do you know of any half day or of a place we could just rent kayaks if we wanted?
Also while you are here, do you suggest we bring towels? For the beach/pool etc? I was reading that a lot of the hotels charge for them. I didn't see anything noted about it for any of the hotels we are staying so I wanted to see if you have any thoughts?
For towels-all hotels will provide bath towels for free and for beach towels for a charge so if you have room in your suitcase I would pack a beach towel.
Kayaking - yes there are companies that offer half day kayaking trips from Dubrovnik and kayak rentals as well - check out: http://www.adriatickayaktours.com/
But first let me first check with our partner in Croatia to see if they offer a half day trip and get back to you.
All excellent info! I will wait to book anything until I hear from you! thanks Michelle, you have been so helpful!
Great, you're welcome!
I just wanted to let you know that I am still working on this and will get back to you soon! Thanks and Happy Friday!
No worries- thanks Michelle. TGIF!
Hi Michelle, what do you suggest for transportation to and from the airport? Taxi or should I requests a ride from the hotel?
Also, what do you know about the coral beach club in Dubrovnik? I stumbled upon it and it looks kind of cool?
So I was able to find a half day kayaking tour, it starts at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. Duration is up to 3 h. Price is 230 KN ($35) pp.
· Sunset tour starts at 5:00 pm. Duration is up to 3 h. Price is 250 KN pp
If you would like to reserve the tour please let me know the departure time and confirm back with me. Payment in cash and in Kunas only will be arranged on the day of the tour, just before departure. They receive bookings until at least 1 hour before departure. But they strongly recommend you to book at least one day before because they tend to be fully booked in advance.
To and from the airport, the cheapest option would be to take the airport shuttle bus that drops you off in Old Town. Or I can arrange a taxi airport transfer if you'd like? I would need to know your flight details for departure and arrival.
Coral Beach Club- I've never been personally but have read and heard great things! It's in Babin Kuk - close by to Dubrovnik's Old Town, and has a chill vibe where locals go and it overlooks the bay. Definitely worth checking out! Would love to hear your thoughts!
Hi Michelle! I would love to go ahead and have you arrange a taxi airport transfer, our flight info is- Lufthansa 1710 coming from Munich to DBV at 3:50
Do you have an estimate for how much it will cost?
We are also still undecided about the kayaking, is there contact info if we decide to go?
Since you are arriving into Dubrovnik today, I have put in a request for an airport pick up (cost is $43), but have not received confirmation on this yet. I will let you know if i receive a confirmation but you can also get a taxi at the airport to your hotel which will be approximately $30. The most popular and cheapest option is to take the airport shuttle bus into Old Town for $3/person. The shuttles are timed with flight arrivals and run very frequently.
Hi Michelle- since you have not had confirmation yet we will go ahead and take the bus, unless I hear otherwise. Thanks!
We were not able to confirm the private airport transfer. You should have just landed in Dubrovnik, so I hope you have a great time in Croatia.
No problem! We have landed and are on the bus! Thanks Michelle
Michelle was an absolute dream to work with, I tend to be very indecisive and she really helped me and my husband plan a wonderful trip. She gave great recommendations of places to eat, things not to miss and was even able to schedule a wine and cycling tour for us when it wasn't originally available. A few minor things could have been different but really did not impact our trip at all.
Our cycling tour with John was one of our favorite parts of the trip, he was an absolute joy to spend our last day in Korcula. The scenery was beautiful (cycling the countryside was a great way to experience Krocula), the wine was quite refreshing after a very warm morning and we could not have asked for a better group of travelers to be with! John was kind enough to email me after the tour and gave my husband and I some great recommendations for food/drinks for the next part of our trip in Split. He really went above and beyond anything my husband and I could have ever imagined and I am sure every service they offer will be as wonderful as the wine and cycling tour.
