Traveler

Hi, welcome to kimkim! I'm Chris and I will be your kimkim travel specialist for your trip to Iceland. I’ll work with you to put together a great custom itinerary for your trip from Egilstaddir back to Reykjavik.

Traveler

on 6/21 (and most days around that time) there are flights from the Reykjavik domestic airport (about 30-45 min from KEF) to Egilsstadir at 7:30, 14:20, and 18:55. The cheapest flight is the 14:20, which is 66 Euro/person, and about $9 USD per checked bag.

If you'll have more than 5 days, I would recommend spending the first night in the artsy town of Seydisfjordur, which also has some good hiking options, and then to spend the second night in Djupivogur.

Traveler

Once you know your dates, I can find some accommodation options for the 3 of you and the prices.

To set the expectations: Once you are happy with the overall direction of the custom itinerary along with price estimates, we would ask you to pay a deposit of the kimkim service fee.

Then I will make some more customizations based on your feedback, and make all reservations for hotels and car rental, as well as any other tours or activities you want to join. I will also put together detailed day-by-day information for all of the sights, stops, and optional detours, as well as restaurant recommendations for each of the areas that you will visit.

Traveler

Chris, That sounds reasonable. We will be a party of a couple and a friend . We look forward to your estimate of the costs and arrangements.

Traveler

Ok great, do you prefer 2 separate rooms in that case?

There are a few different accommodation styles and price tiers:
- Guesthouses with shared bathrooms between a few rooms
- Guesthouses with private bathrooms
- Midrange hotels / apartments
- Higher-end / luxury.

Do you have a preference or a target accommodation budget that I should aim for?

Traveler

Yes two separate rooms. Midrange or higher is best.

Traveler

Hi, sorry it took a few days to get back to you, I was helping some other travelers who were about to leave for their trip.

Here are some options I found for nicer accommodations along that route from Egilsstadir back to Reykjavik

$2273 USD for 5 nights, 2 rooms, at midrange and higher places
Day 1 - Seydisfjordur (or for $150 less, you can stay in a 3 bedroom apartment rather than the hotel/guesthouse)
Day 2 - Hofn, stay in a 2 bedroom apartment right on the water
Day 3 - Vik: all option in Vik are booked up, but there is a guesthouse nearby with 2 rooms with shared bathrooms. I can also look for options on Airbnb for full vacation rentals if you like, but I would not be able to make those reservations for you (can send the options)
Day 4 - Golden Circle, 2 rooms at 3-star hotel very close to Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall
Day 5 - Reykjavik, 2 rooms at 3-star hotel

Traveler

Many thanks - grateful if you could confirm the price quoted is total cost (or is it per person) and what is included beyond accommodation (eg hire car and airfares). Also grateful for advice on potential availability and additional costs for 4-star or above accommodation where possible.

Traveler

Hi, I can find 4 star options where available and some other 3 star where it is not. These prices were the totals, not per person.

Traveler

That sounds reasonable.

Traveler

The only areas where 3-4 star places are available are in Reykjavik and along the Golden Circle (in the other areas, I will find nice / high-end accommodations and guesthouses for you).

Along the golden circle, there's a 3-star options for $368, or 4-star ION Adventure hotel for $956

For Reykjavik, there's a 3-star option for $393, or a 4-star for $531 along the marina

Unfortunately, the option I found in Hofn is no longer available, and it's getting pretty booked there. I would recommend that we make the reservations for the other nights at this time other's don't become unavailable, I can book with free cancellation where possible so that we can still make changes later if you like.

Traveler

If this sounds good to you, I can make the reservations today. You can add your payment details here, which I will use for the service fee and reservations. (Mastercard and Visa preferred, as not all places accept other cards)

Traveler

Hi, I wanted to check back in to see if you had decided between the accommodation options I first provided and the 4-star upgrades. Do you have a preference?

Traveler

The 4 star would be good.

Traveler

Chris thank you for your replies. Just need to confirm what is included beyond accommodation (eg hire car and airfares.

Traveler

Hi. I can make the arrangements for the car rental and accommodations and any other tours/activities you want to do. We typically do not handle the international flights portion of the trip.

Traveler

Does that mean domestic airfares are included?

Traveler

Domestic airfares were not included in that quote, which was just accommodations. But I can make those reservations for you. I'll put everything together so that you have a quote for the total (domestic flights, car rental, accommodations)

Traveler

Hi, here are the options I found:

- 5 nights accommodation, 4-star where available (Golden Circle, Reykjavik), nice accommodations elsewhere: $3005 USD (3981 AUD)
- 3x Domestic Flights (+1 bag each): $239 USD (317 AUD)
- Car Rental (Egilsstadir to KEF): $689 USD (913 AUD) for Automatic Compact, $593 USD (786 AUD) for manual compact

Traveler

If this looks good to you, you can add your payment details and I will begin reserving the hotels where there is free-cancellation (this way we can still change them if you like, but you will have the options reserved before they become full)

Traveler

Hi, I received the payment details, thank you.

For the flights and car rental, I will need the following information:
- Full name, DOB, gender for all passengers
- Name of primary driver.
- Do you want to add any additional coverage or extra drivers?

In the mean time, I will make the reservations for the accommodations.

Traveler

Also, did you have a preference for the car rental? (Egilsstadir to KEF): $689 USD (913 AUD) for Automatic Compact, $593 USD (786 AUD) for manual compact

Traveler

Hi, I made the reservations for each night.

For Hofn, the apartment I found before was no longer available, but I found these 2 options. I made reservations for both and can cancel one free of charge, but they both were the last options so I wanted to make sure it didn't disappear. Which do you prefer?

- https://www.booking.com/hotel/is/guesthouse-birkifell.en-us.html?aid=1140711 ($557 USD)
- https://www.booking.com/hotel/is/lonid-apartments.en-us.html?aid=1140711 ($562 USD)

Unfortunately, the ION Adventure Hotel only had 1 room left, so I made a reservation at another nearby 3-star hotel very close to the Geysir and geothermal area.

Also, in Vik the only place near Vik has shared bathrooms between a few rooms, I hope that place works for you, but I can continue searching if you prefer (you should have received a confirmation via email.)

Traveler

Hi, I wanted to check to see if you had a preference for which of the places to keep for Hofn. will cancel the other once you let me know.

Traveler

Chris

Lónið Apartments would be best for us.

Traveler

Ok, I canceled the other option.

Traveler Review

The accommodation near Vik, Sólheimahjáleiga Guesthouse , was outrageously expensive for what it was , and compared with the proper hotel the next night, Litli Geysir Hotel

You should add the Lava Centre to your itinerary. http://www.lavacentre.is/ We enjoyed a hour or two there and it provided some useful information about the thermal region. One of the useful titbit was to watch for the dome to form in the geyser before it erupts:
