“We are looking at the Khopra danda trek for 2 reasons: we want to trek a bit longer than 4 days, but the full Annapurna is a bit too much for us. Also, we like the idea of the Khopra bit of the trek being a bit off the beaten track”
Ngima Dorji Sherpa, a local specialist from Nepal, helped this traveler put together a customized itinerary based on Khopra Danda Trek - A great off the beaten path trek in the Annapurna region.

Hi, nice to meet. Happy to put a plan together for you
Are your dates set for this October?
we haven't booked a ticket yet, however we're looking at flying to Kathmandu around October 8, and either the next day travel to Pokhara and on return to Kathmandu spend 2/3 more nights in Kat, or do that before we go to Pokhara. So in other words, we're rather flexible still :-)
However, we don't really want to be sleeping in tents on this trek :-) So tea houses only please, if that's possible.
We have anticipated on staying in Nepal for around 14 days total
Khopra would be the perfect trek for you, then :) And no tents needed
There is an 8-day route for Khopra that includes three viewpoints which are really nice (Khopra, Muldi Peak, and Poon Hill)
There is a single teahouse on top of Khopra and it can get busy in October, but in case it's full then your guide can adjust your itinerary to ensure you have a teahouse each night, so no problems there
Would 8 days work for you, then? That would leave you enough time for explore Kathmandu for a few days and also spend a night in Pokhara.
(You'll see the 8-day itinerary in the article above, plus a couple shorter routes.)
that 8-day itinerary looks good indeed. Would you have an indication of the average hrs per day we'd walk?
Great, I think this will be a great trek for you both (I've done it twice now, and it has a perfect balance of being convenient yet getting you off the beaten path)
You'd be walking around 3.5-5.5 hours per day, depending on how fast you walk
not so fast, but that sounds fine
And your itinerary will be flexible, so if you wish to adapt it during your trek and have shorter/longer days, your guide can help with this (keeping in mind that you'll need to make your flight back to Kathmandu)
I'm going to invite one of our local experts into the chat who can provide you with a detailed itinerary and a quote, so you can decide from there - sound good?
Yes, sure sounds good! As that's I take it how the trip would work in reality right, we'll walk with a guide? And do you trek in a group? (sorry - new to KimKim :-))
No problems, happy to explain how it works :) Basically, next step is to put you in touch with one of our local experts on the ground in Kathmandu. They'll answer any specific questions you have, and put a trip plan together, based on what you'd like help with, and which you can then book here on kimkim.
Most of the trips we do are private treks—just you two and the guide (and a porter, if needed—but if we have other groups departing around the same time, we can see if you can join them, as well.
For your trip, we can help with:
- organizing a great place to stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara (based on your budget)
- booking your flights to/from Pokhara
- your Khopra trek (transport to/from trek, guide, permits, meals and accommodation)
But it's all up to you - we're happy to help however we can!
As I'm based in the Netherlands, I'm signing off now, but will check back in again tomorrow night. Thanks for the overview so far!! Talk more soon.
Sounds good. Have a good night
Expect another email notification from kimkim within the next day once one of our experts joins the chat, and we can continue from there!
Perfect! Have a great day Alex!
It's my pleasure to be here to help you with your trip to Khopra for coming October. Thanks to Alex for joining me in.
I have prepared a program with cost for you which is attached here under. I hope you will find it satisfactory as expected. However, feel free to write to us incase of any confusions or any further queries.
Look forward to hear from you.
Hey Ngima, thank you! I will review tonight and you will hear from us.
We will look forward to hear from you soon.
Dear Ngima and Alex, we have booked our flights and so we have confirmation when we arrive in Nepal. We will arrive in Pokhara either Oct 9 or Oct 10, and want to start our trek on October 11.
However, we have a request with regards to the trek. We have always enjoyed trekking in small groups and so with this trek we would prefer to trek with more people, not just the 2 of us + guide. Is that even possible? Preferably with 2 or 4 other people.
Thanks for confirming your date. We can try our best to promote your trip date as fixed departure trip to get more joinings after you re-confirm your trip with deposit/ payment. But we cannot say for sure if we can get booking for the very same date for same trip. We hope for the best to happen with more joinings but we request you too to see if you can convince some of your friends/ near ones to join you or ask them to recommend their near ones to join your group.
Incase, if there is no other joining then there will be no options other than doing private trek with your guide.
I am jumping in here for Alex since he is out trail running in Canada...
As Ngima mentioned, we are happy to promote your trek to other travelers. However, as Ngima mentioned, it would be helpful for us if you'd confirm your booking first, since it's a bit hard to promote group trips for multiple travelers, in case nobody booked yet, if you see what I mean... Especially for a less trodden trek such as Khopra Danda.
That said, there is a pretty good chance we'll eventually find some more people for you, but we can't guarantee it.
Let me know if you are ready to confirm, or whether you'd need some more time. When you are ready I will add a payment link so you can submit your payment by credit card.
Hey Joost, thanks for your message. We'll be ready to confirm withun the next day or so, I will let you ang Ngima now asap.
There was just snother thing we encountered, might be good to ask you: we land in Katmandu on Oct 8 in the evening. We were wanting to take a bus to Phokara on Oct 9, but it's Deshain then isn't it? Can we get to Phokara at all then?
Allow me to answer to your question.
We are pleased to know that you have fixed your dates. There will be no problem in getting bus to Pokhara if you book it in advance. During Dashain, it is top tourist season and most Nepalese family also move to their origin homes from Kathmandu which can make the seats sold out already. Hence, you should book as soon as possible to reserve the seat. Also we recommend to book hotel soon.
Thank you for your prompt reply Ngima! I will let you know asap when we can confirm payment. Best wishes!
Ngima, would you be able to recommend specific bus operators for the trip from khatmandu to phokara?
Yes of course. We consider Greenline buses as the best bus service providers for Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan route surface transfers. If you wish, we can book the tickets for you on your provided dates. Please do let us know if you need our help on that. Have you started with booking hotels too?
Hi Ngima, thank you very much. Yes we would be pleased if you could arrange bus tickets for us:
October 9 travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara, with the Greenline bus as you suggest. We would like to travel during daytime, arriving in Pokhara in the afternoon if that is possible.
We would also like to confirm our trip (Khopra Danda as per itinerary you have sent before) with you then as soon as our transportation is confirmed, to start our trek on October 11 from Pokhara. We will arrive back in Pohkara on October 18, correct?
That would imply we want to take the bus back from Pokhara to Kathmandu On October 19. Again we would like to travel during daytime, arriving in Kathmandu in the afternoon.
I look forward to receiving confirmations via you Ngima, and we will anticipate on receiving payment details as well.
Thank you for allowing us to book your bus tickets. The bus will start moving from Kathmandu in the morning at 7.30 am and it will be around 6-7 hours drive depending on traffic. Also you will be return at around same time from Pokhara on Oct 19.
Also thanks for tour confirmation. Attached is your final program itinerary with Pokhara travelling date.
P.S. You have lunch included in given price on the days you travel via Greenline bus. This lunch service is arranged by Greenline Travel and Tours for their passengers in given busfare. You will likely to have lunch in place named Kurintar which is on the midway to/ from Pokhara.
Dear Ngima, I am pleased to inform you we have completed our booking by submitting payment. We will await your further information re. bus tickets and meeting in Pokhara. Looking forward to the trip!
Thank you very much for confirming your trip.
Now we would like to request you to provide us both of yours passport and passport size photo scanned copy which can be used to obtain permits later. You can either upload your passport and photo here in jpg/ pdf format or mail us in our email address : email@example.com, whichever you find easy.
Also please fill out our booking form attached herewith for our official record too from which we can have your family information and contact numbers to use incase of any contingency during trek.
We have also attached the recommended trek equipment list for your kind reference.
If you have already booked and confirmed your hotel in Kathmandu, please do let us know so that we can make arrangements for trek briefing meeting with you and hand over the bus tickets.
P.S. The booking form needs to be filled out by both of you please and send us it's scanned copy.
Dear Ngima, we just discovered my husband needs to get a new passport as the current one will expire in 4 months.
So we will provide you with the scans and forms next week.
The address where we will be staying in Kathmandu on Oct. 8: Hotel Friends Home, Chhusya Galli, Jyatha, Thamel, Kathmandu. We will arrive late in the evening, we will land on 20:30hrs on Oct. 8.
Thank you very much for the information. That will be fine for us if you would provide us the details sometime next week.
As you are arriving Kathmandu late in the evening, we might be able to meet you in the hotel for trek briefing in the early morning of Oct 9. And afterwards, you will depart to Pokhara. I hope it will be fine for you if we come to your hotel early morning on 9th and do trip briefing with your guide.
Look forward to hear from you.
One of our client is willing to join group to Khopra on October. Will you be happy to join any third person in your trip to Khopra danda? It is perfectly fine if you are not willing to join anyone and have a private trip instead.
Awaiting for your swift reply.
Hi Ngima! Of course that is fine!
Dear Ngima, I have just emailed you the required documentation. Can you please let us know if you've received everything in good order?
And with regards to the briefing in our hotel, yes that is fine to do in the morning before we leave for the bus. Must be an early meeting then though as the bus leaves at 7am or so?
We received the documents very well. Can you please give me a call after you land Kathmandu in my mobile number : 9851036115? We can then arrange time for the meeting next morning.
Your bus will leave Kathmandu on 7.30 am but you will need to report to the bus station in Thamel at 7 am. We will work out the time accordingly.
Looking forward to see you soon.
Perfect! Thanks Ngima.
Hey Ngima, I'm going through the equipment list, and was just wondering - as we are doing a teahouse trek, do we need to bring matrasses and sleeping bags then?
You will need sleeping bags but not mattress for lodge trek. However, you can also get the sleeping bags on hire basis in Kathmandu before your depart for trek.
OK thanks for confirming Ngima! And just curious, did the other person that was interested in joining on this trek confirm?
Other person who was interested has not confirmed her trip yet.
No worries, just curious :-)
Can you share your hotel information for Pokhara with us please?
Hey Ngima! Our hotel in Pokhara is Hotel Middle Path, Center point, Lakeside Pokhara-6, Nepal. Only 6 days and then we'll meet! We're looking forward to it.
Looking forward to meet you soon.
I hope everything is going well leading up to your trip. Let us know if you have any questions. I'm attaching an article on getting your visa on arrival in Kathmandu, if helpful
Thanks Alex. Off the top of my head, there were 2 jeeps at Hile waiting to depart besides us, we crossed one jeep that went up when we went down and down there were 2 more cars ready to go up.
I guess my two suggestions would be: 1. You don't necessarily have to spend the night in Hile, especially when you have a car arranged to pick you up there. I guess for those that have a tighter schedule. 2. When you do stay overnight in Hile just as we did, in hindsight we would have had no problem to walk the next day to Biretanthi. I mean the car was perfect and we had I think the best driver of the whole of Nepal, yet it feels a bit like we bother the villagers and trekkers that did walk down from Hile.
Such a pleasant man :-)
We concluded our aqcuaintance with a lunch in Boudanath yesterday, it was great to be able to chat with him a bit more. All his knowledge of trekking!
