Hiking, Dining, and Diving in Iceland

Family of 3 visited Iceland in July 2017

“We are a couple married looking for highlights and off the beaten path attractions. We are in decent shape for mid 50's from the US. I am an adventurous eater while my wife would enjoy a hike. We are both PADI certified. I do not know much about Iceland and am open to ideas. I was thinking a self-drive tour with guides added in areas where their knowledge would enhance the visit.

Summary of the trip planning conversation

Below are some useful excerpts from the trip planning conversation
Jeff J:
I have put together a general schedule below. I am not sure if this makes sense. I don't want to be rushed. The list does cover the sites that interest me most.

July 28 Arrive back in Reykjavik
July 29 Fly to Akureyrı area morning. Dive Strytan afternoon - two dives.
July 30 Maybe Lake Myvatn area, Godafoss Falls, thermal springs
July 31 Southern Fjords including Dynandi Falls
August 1 Volcanic Snaefellsnes
August 2 Dive Silfra two dives, Golden Circle
August 3 Glymur Falls area
August 4 Depart I realize this may not be realistic, but it's a start.

Please let me know your thoughts and if I am missing something significant.

Halldor:
This is doable, except to get from Myvatn to the southern Westfjords is a very long drive which requires an extra day in the middle. So you would have to skip one of the four sightseeing days for this to work out more comfortably. I think it is most practical to skip the day in the Southern Westfjords, as it will eliminate a lot of driving, and instead go straight to Snaefellsnes from the North. Here is what the trip could be like:

July 28 - Arrive back in Iceland. Overnight in Reykjavik.
July 29 - Dive in Kleifarvatn lake. Afterwards, drive to the Snaefellsnes peninsula, explore the Hellnar and Arnarstapi beaches, the Snaefellsjokull glacier volcano, and the scattered lava fields and beaches of Snaefellsnes. Overnight in Snaefellsnes. Driving time today about 4 hours.
July 30 - The iconic Kirkjufell mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, followed by the colourful Berserkjahraun lava fields. Afternoon ferry from Stykkisholmur to the Southern Westfjords. Overnight in the Westfjords ("southern fjords"). Driving time today about 3 hours, plus 2.5 hour ferry.
July 31 - The towering Latrabjarg bird cliffs, beautiful colour rich beaches including Raudasandur and Breidavik/Orlygshofn, and the majestic Dynjandi waterfall. Overnight in picturesque Isafjordur town.
August 1 - Drive back from the Westfjords towards the Golden Circle area. Stop on the way to view the seal colony at Snaefellsnes, and for a dip in the warm and nice Reykjanes geothermal pool, and for a short walk up to Grabrok crater. Overnight in Golden Circle area. Driving time today about 6 hours.
August 2 - A Silfra diving tour, followed by afternoon & early evening exploration of the Golden Circle (when the crowds are less). Again overnight in Golden Circle area. Driving time today about 2 hours.
August 3 - Take a de-tour for the hike up to Glymur waterfall. Overnight in Reykjavik (or closer to Keflavik airport, if you prefer). Driving time today about 2 hours.
August 4 - Departure.

Jeff J:
We would want to do two dives in each place. Is that already built into the schedule above? Also, would we be driving back on the same road? Can you do a something schedule for if we were to go to Akureryı? Thanks!

Halldor:
Here is a possible program with two dives and Akureyri included:

July 28 - Arrive back in Iceland. Overnight in Reykjavik.
July 29 - Fly to Akureyri. Explore Lake Myvatn, and Dettifoss & Godafoss waterfalls. Overnight in Akureyri. Driving time today about 4-5 hours.
July 30 - Strytan diving tour in the morning. Drive west from Akureyri in the afternoon and overnight in the Northwest. Driving time today about 2-3 hours.
July 31 - Explore the Snaefellsnes peninsula, explore the Hellnar and Arnarstapi beaches, the Snaefellsjokull glacier volcano, the scattered lava fields and beaches of Snaefellsnes (including Berserkjahraun) and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain & Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. Overnight in Snaefellsnes. Driving time today about 4-5 hours.
August 1 - Drive towards the Glymur area and hike to Glymur. Overnight in the Golden Circle area. Driving time today about 3-4 hours.
August 2 - A Silfra diving tour in the morning. Afternoon exploration of the Golden Circle (when the crowds are less). Overnight a bit east of the Golden Circle. Driving time today about 2 hours.
August 3 - Explore the South Coast (Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black sand beach, Dyrholaey sea arch & lighthouse) and/or Reykjanes peninsula (Kleifarvatn lake, Krysuvik & Gunnuhver geothermal areas, Reykjanesviti lighthouse . Overnight in Reykjavik (or closer to Keflavik airport, if you prefer). Driving time today about 5-7 hours (depending on how much you want to explore today).
August 4 - Departure.
