“I am travelling with my friend; leaving husband and kids behind to see Iceland and get out there.
Both very fit (marathon runners and skiers), adventorous and not scared of long walks, kayaking, ice climbing...whatever to experience what a local fan would go and see/do if they had a 5 days off in Iceland.
we prefer a small group ( or private), exclusive guided tour packed with activities, maximizing every minute there, telling us what/where to be next and we are ready to go!
we have not booked hotels yet so we are flexible to travel/move around.
pls, send me an estimate thanks. I asked for another quote and will decide this week. Looking fwd to hearing from you!

pls, include what the average price will be per day. I know that some activities will need to be switched around depending on the weather.
Hi, thank you for reaching out! I am Kristín and work for Midgard Adventure. I'm taking a look on your request. There are a bit limited hiking options right in the winter time due to weather and conditions. However, it would be great to do whatever we can with short notice in line with the weather. I would recommend Midgard Surprise private day. Then we would provide you with a super-jeep and a guide, that would take a look at the forecast and conditions, your request and make an outdoor adventure with you based on that. How does that sound? That kind of a private day tour costs 144.240 ISK for both of you. I can also help you with finding an accommodation in the surrounding area, I have one hotel/guesthouse in mind that has great view and is kind of on the countryside.
Would love to hear back from you what you think!
All the best,
Hi, this is Joost, co-founder of kimkim.
The price quoted is approx $1268 USD. This would be the cost of day with a super jeep and guide for your private group. The "Midgard Surprise" means that the Midgard Adventure Team will take you into the mountains for a day and figure out with you what the best destination is given the weather, local conditions at the time, and what you feel like.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
hi Joost. thanks so much for getting back to me!
Is the 1268 USD/ day per person , or for 2 people?
For 2 people
I think the same price would apply in case you end up having 3 people, but Kristin should confirm that
Ok. We are looking into an adventorous trip. Me an my friend practice a lot of sports and are fit.
If you can send me an itinerary of the spots we would be visiting during our stay, that'd be great and will help me finalize this project.
Also, do you recommend us staying in Reyjavick the whole time, or spending 1-2 nights somewhere else. We are flexible.
Can we include kayaking close to the icebergs?
Our budget is about 550 USD a day/ person so pretty close to Kristin's estimate.
I'd recommend staying outside of Reykjavik for part of your trip, otherwise you would spend too much time getting to and from the outdoors every day
that's what I thought. we are open to that
In terms of your budget, I assume that's for activities and doesn't include lodging?
Let me add a a few quick ideas below. Some of them are for more days, so you'd have to drop a few things...
The above idea may be a good starting point to work from.
A guide would come with us the whole trip, i assume.
Looks great: can we add a few things we would like to do like: kayaking in icebergs, ice hiking, scuba in some crystal waters. The south lava beach, volcanoes, waterfalls, northern lights...all of that yes of course we want to see.
Sounds great. I will have Kirsten work out the details with you. They are specialized in guided trips, so this should be right up their alley. I will be standby in case you have any questions.
Great! thank you! Please, ask kristin to add the hotels she recommend us staying at (nice ones :)
I will be on the look for your responses this weekend!
I can help you a bit with hotels already if you like since they are selling out very fast. There is a nice hotel in the South, close to where Midgard is based called Hotel Ranga. It has already mostly sold out for some of your dates but has a room for Nov 9 -11 for instance. I'd be happy to book it for you in case you want to lock it in. It's about $300 per night. Let me know.
im checking with my friend. i will get back to you asap.
Sounds good. If you want to go ahead with it, please submit your payment details here: [REDACTED]. We will then make the bookings on your behalf.
We will only book items that you agree to here, and we will help with your booking with Midgard and any other activities you would like to do during your stay in Iceland.
I'd rather see the inteinerary and book everything together.
However, if you recommend booking this hotel now due to poor availability, i will go ahead.
I talked to my friend and she really wants to do the snorkling and kayaking.
I totally understand you would like to see an itinerary, usually we do that before booking anything.
We can hold off, but there is a chance it will sell out. Since it's refundable there ins't much risk in making a reservation.
Up to you really. Sorry to put you on the spot.
ok, i will go ahead an enter payment details on website knowing we can cancell, and/or change date according to the intinerary
Sounds good. In the meantime I'd be happy to help you figure out an itinerary and have Kristin confirm that it looks good. They are quite flexible and will go with you around the South (or even all of Iceland) depending on what you would like to do. They are a top notch company in Iceland, so I am sure they will be able to anything that's possible under the then current conditions.
Got it, thanks
So we will book Hotel Ranga for Nov 9-11 now to make sure you have the room there
excellent. Just to ensure, this trip witll be a private guided tour without other people, right?
not that I dont like people!
Yes, that's what Kristin's quote was for
ok agree with ranga
one room with 2 beds i assume?
Ok, I made the reservation. You should have received an email from booking.com as well. Confirmation attached here as well.
This is a great start for Kristin to start planning some days for you in the South that are easily reachable from Hotel Ranga. We'd be happy to help with your other hotel bookings as well, depending on what program you & Kristin come up with for your other days.
Depending on the plans for your first day we could start looking at booking a hotel in Reykjavik for Nov 8. I think you may like Hotel Alda.
Quick update: I haven't heard from Kristin yet, but since it's weekend lets give it a bit more time. I will be standby to make sure everything will be put together in time.
In the meantime let me know if you have any questions.
Hi Joost. Ok will wait for Kristin to get back online.
we arrive early on nov 8th- we would like to be able to spend the night in Reykjavik on the 8th, leave bags and go on some excursion that entails exercising that day. We are both atlhetic and after a day of travelling it would be nice to do something outdoors
I looked at hotel Alda; i think we will like this hotel. Do you guys get a better price for booking it yourselves, or is it about the same as what we will get booking it thru any mayor hotel website?
I collect points booking myself, so I prefer to do it this way going forward unless you get a better price.
We get the same price you would pay at booking.com, through our partnership with them. We get a commission on these bookings, so usually we prefer booking it for you. But if you prefer to book it yourself that's totally fine.
A few other notes:
* Kristin isn't online this weekend. She will get back Monday morning.
* for your arrival day, the Blue Lagoon may be a good option. If you are interested we can check availability. Pls let me know.
Hi Joost, I'd like to see the complete itinerary. Depending on the things that we dont want to miss , we can adjust the easier things to do like the blue lagoon.
do we need to book the blue lagoon in advance? when is the ebst time to visit it with less tourist crowds?
Hi, I hope you are well and feeling excited for your Iceland trip. Here is a link to our Midgard Surprise tour: http://midgardadventure.is/tour/sia-surprise/. The price I gave you is a total price in ISK for 2-3 persons. This is our most popular tour during winter, as the guide just takes the super-jeep, checks out the weather & conditions and makes the best out of the day in line with what you are looking for, so I would pick an active guide with you :)
Other tours we have is a South Coast tour: http://midgardadventure.is/tour/exclusive-south-coast/ And Þórsmörk tour: http://midgardadventure.is/tour/thorsmork-in-winter/ - but the Surprise tour gives the guide more flexibility to tailor make the tour
I would love to assist you with booking or answering your comments if you have questions.
All the best,
the tours look great!. However, there's more info that I can dissect. I dont know what to choose. I dont know what are must sees and not. This is our first time to Iceland.
So, what we are looking for is an intinerary that clearly tells us where we are going to be during the dates we sent you ( Nov8 arriving AM -13 when we leave around 5 PM).
Of course, we are flexible changing/swapping depending on the weather, but we would like to have a more clear idea of what we will be seeing.
We would like to include: helicopter ride (if you recommend it- looks great), kayaking, scuba/snorkleing, ice hike, northern lights.
I'd like to confirm the trip this week. My friend is a planner so I know she will want to look at an intinerary before committing :) .
I will be anxiously waiting for your response! Thank you Kristin! We are super excited about this trip!
I looked into it more: these are things we would like to be included:
- Landmanalaugar/ hekla volcanoe
- "under the volcanoe" / myrdals jokull glacier ...looks cool but need your opinion
- ice walk
- silfra snorkeling
- kayaking around icebergs if possible
Given that you will be staying in hotel Ranga on the South Coast from Nov 9 to 11, here's a suggestion of how you could structure your trip:
Nov 8: Arrival, Stay in Reykjavik (optional Blue Lagoon or other activity)
Nov 9: If you're up for an early start, you could do your first day with Midgard today. Golden Circle is a good activity here on the way from Reykjavík to the south. Golden Circle is well accessible and is the most popular tour in Iceland and I really recommend that one
Nov 10: Midgard guided tour - Þórsmörk is a must see!
Nov 11: Midgard guided tour - South Coast - very impressive. Waterfalls, black beaches & glacier.
Nov 12: Back to Reykjavik with caving on the way? This day depends on the conditions, and if there is snow in the mouth of the cave. This day can also be used for a helicopter adventure, or the next day before 2pm. It is good to have two days option to do a helicopter sight seeing, as it is very weather dependant. The tour I would recommend is over the highlands, please see some tours here:
- Both highlands and Þórsmörk, where we would be taking you on a super-jeep, it is fun to see it both from the ground and from above: https://www.helo.is/tour/natures-highlights/
- Here you can land on Eyjafjallajökull, the beast that erupted in 2010 and stopped all the airtraffic: https://www.helo.is/tour/eyjafjallajokull-adventure/
- Snæfellsnes is a complete different think, something you wont be seeing this trip: https://www.helo.is/tour/mystical-snaefellsnes-journey/
Nov 13: Departure at 5pm, airport transfer at 2pm.
I could see that you wanted to kayak in the glacier lagoon. It is unfortunately not available after September. But I can offer you a kayaking tour on a lake or at a sea?
we are staying at hotel Ranga 9-11 = where would we spend the night on the 11th?
can we do the blue lagoon the day we leave in the morning?
or you recommend to devote the whole 1st day for the blue lagoon ?
we arrive on the 8th at 6.45 AM to Rey...so we have a whole day
we can forget the kayaking if we can add the snorkling.
the helicopter tour looks awesome! i see that there is a trip that requires 4 person minimum and 2 others that only require 2 people minimum. Unless we are paired with other toursists that want to take the same trip, we will have to stick to the 2 people minimum
Thanks for the message, please find the answers below:
-northern lights can be seen while staying at Rangá as there is very limited day light
- Landmanalaugar/ hekla volcanoe: Landmannalaugar is amazing during summer time, the rhyolite coloured mountains. However, we do try to avoid going there during winter, as the drive is long, and the colors cannot be seen due to snow in the mountains. Hekla can be fun as a mountaineering, but Tindfjöll mountaineering might be a great option for an outdoor activity that day instead of Hekla.
- "under the volcanoe" / myrdals jokull glacier ...looks cool but need your opinion. - I've tried this tour myself, and I really loved it. I just love the higlands in general. I would always prefer Þórsmörk, but If you are up for another highland/inland tour, this one is great.
- ice walk - is a 3 hrs activity (with safety briefing and gearing) and is a great additional do the South Coast day tour
- silfra snorkeling - great activity and add-on to the Golden Circle
Great! I will go with your recommendation of Porsmork instead.
Can you please, send me the prices in USD per day for 2 people and what it includes. If there are additional prices to the price you give me, pls let me know what that is for.
we are getting closer !
Regarding 11. november - I would recommend spending as much time in the south as possible. I assume that Joost is arranging the accommodation for you, or should I?
I would recommend doing the Blue Lagoon at arrival or departure, as it is located between the airport and Reykjavík
I will check on the helicopter operator if they have anything booked already so you could join an open group tour. It is closed now, but will work on that in the morning :)
I will send you the price for the package tomorrow, when I get an answer from the helicopter operator! :)
- Ok, then we need to book another night at hotel Raga for the 11th so we can check out on the 12th. I can make this reservation myself. Joost already reserved 9th and 10th nights stay.
- blue lagoon: let's do it the last day
- helicopter: i have a friend that will be joining us on the 11th . She arrives to Rey at 3.30PM on the 11th. she will need transportation to hotel Raga. She wants to see the northern lights and as you recommended this is the best place to see them. Then she will join us on the 12th for the heli ride and ice hiking on the glacier. She will return to Rey to spend the night with us in Rey, and will also join us for the blue Lagoon on the 13th. We all leave at the same time from the airport on the 13th.
Can u help me coordinate transportation from Rey to hotel raga on friday 11th?
- so for the heli, we will be 3 people if we do it on the 12th.
Please, send me the price/ day based on 2 people private tour. as explained above, a 3rd person will join our party late on the 11th to the 13th.
Please, confirm if we can do the snorkling.
we are very excited! I told joost that our budget was about 550USD/ day/person=~ 1000-1100/ day.
at hotel Raga we need to add another person for one night one the 11th- she is happy to book it herself, but i need to know if transportation from Rey to Raga will be an issue at 3.30pm when she lands in Rey
I see that there are no more rooms available for Nov 11th at hotel Ranga to extend our stay there one more night. Can u guys get one more night for 3 people?
Indeed, it looks like Ranga is sold out for the 11th. Kristin recommended hotel Laki. It's another 2 hours east, but would a great location to do activities. Kristin should work with you to decide, since it really depends on what activities you will do.
I'd be happy to be standby and help, but I would suggest Kristin and you figure out the hotels directly, as otherwise I will just be a bottleneck in the trip planning process.
Hi, I heard from the helicopter operator, and they do not have any individual bookings yet. But I do have an other operator that offer more variety of tours with minimum 2 pax. Here are the tours I would recommend:
https://www.helo.is/tour/eyjafjallajokull-adventure/ - 140.800 ISK per person. You will see magnificent Eyjafjallajökull and the new lava from above, that you will see from below in the Þórsmörk tour (if visibility allows). You will fly back part of the south shore, but not the part that we would do.
http://helicopter.is/helicopter-tours/countless-craters/ - 69.900 ISK per person. Here you will explore the Reykjanes peninsula from above, that you will get the change to explore from below on the first day, just after landing. The area is geothermal, with steam coming up here and there and lava fields covering the surfice.
http://helicopter.is/helicopter-tours/geothermal-tour/ - 49.900 ISK per person. Here you will explore another geotheral area, lava fields and mountains around Reykjavík.
http://helicopter.is/helicopter-tours/waterfalls-valleys/ - 69.900 ISK per person. Here you will see a magnificent waterfall, national park, geothermal area and volcano.
I cannot deny that all of them are very impressive and it is hard to choose one, even though you will be there by a super-jeep, it is also interesting to see it from above. But maybe the price can be an indicator of the length and there you can choose from your budget.
I am working on the cost and itinerary - will revert soon

Please remind me, have you already booked any accommodation in Reykjavík, or any accommodation for the dates 8.11, or after the 12.11?
can you give me the price in USD?
hi Kristin, we have reservations at Ranga hotel for the nights 9 and 10th, checking out on the 11th.
We have a 3rd person joining us on the 11th. She arrives at Rey at 3.30PM on friday 11th.
She wants to see the northern lights and the blue lagoon. she leaves the same day and time as we are on the 13th, so she will not miss the blue lagoon.
What do you recommend we stay the night of the 11th to ensure my friend gets a chance to see the nirthern lights? = 3 people.
There is no more rooms at Ranga hotel to extend our nights from 9-12.
should we choose another hotel alltogether from 9-12th?
Can you arrange for transportation for my 3rd friend for the 11th from Rey to where we will be?
we dont have reservations in Rey yet.
Hi Kristin. So for the Ranga hotel can we get a deluxe Room?
Hi, Kristin is offline for the night (it's late in Iceland)... I expect her be back online tomorrow am. She will be able to work with you on hotels once it's clear what experience you are going for exactly.
I am a little terrified of helicopters frankly, do you recommend we do them? will we get the same experience if we don't?
A helicoper ride will give you quite a unique perspective, but if you are not comfortable with it there are great ways to still enjoy Iceland on foot etc
Ok, let me brew on it, As for accommodation, absolutely a deluxe room is preferred :) we like to pamper ourselves after a long day. I absolutely love all the recommendations you have given us. So there will be bits and pieces we will tour ad a group due to the location, but for the most part a private tour?
I think all of Kristin's proposals are for private tours, but she should confirm that
In any case, I am sure it will be amazing. I was in the same area a few weeks ago and it's stunning over there!
ok, I'll let you go, I know it's late. I see you have 4 in your tribe, go get some rest. We can carry on tomorrow. I'm taking the day off it's my birthday so I'll be more accesible
Happy early bday! BTW, I am in CA, so it's not that late yet... But yes, the kids will keep me busy tonight :)
oh you stinker! i thought you were in European time! lol, its earlier for you than me, so back to work!
haha :) sounds good. Kristin is Iceland... I am on the west coast... yup back to work! You are in excellent hands with Kristin & the team at Midgard. They are the best
Just a reminder: the 3rd friend is arriving in Reyavik on the 11th at 3.30pm- she will need transportation to meet us wherever we are (probably we will still be in the south). She will then join us for whatever activity we do, and will need a hotel room in the same hotel we stay at. She departs at the same time from Rey as we do.
Re: accomodations at Ranga Hotel: we only have 2 nights reserved for the 9 and 10th. I checked yesterday and there are no more rooms available for the 11th...should we change this hotel to another where we can stay 3 nights in the south without having to move? and where our 3rd friend can join us on the evening of the 11th?
Kristin had recommended the following hotels earlier (outside if this thread):
Hotel Smáratún is very nice, but Grímsborgir is around 45 min from rangá, more near to RVK, and is on similar standard.
Near to jökulsárlón.Hótel Laki or Hrífunes are very nice.
I think the first one should work best location-wise... feel free to check if it's available (or I'd be happy to as well)
Probably best to let Kristin handle the hotels.... not easy to find these online.... She will know best which hotels make most sense for you given your program and preferred hotel style.
great! thanks Joost , I will look into them.
Hi guys, I've been looking over your messages, thanks Joost for jumping in.
- Smáratún is located on a very nice place but it's just regular hotel rooms, no deluxe rooms.
- Hótel Grímsborgir is also located at a beautiful place, more luxury, but 45 minutes more far from the very south - but worth it if you are up for a nice accommodation.
- I also checked hotel Rangá for 11. nov, just in case.. but not positive as you've already contacted them
- I also checked hotel Lækur. That's a countryside hotel, extremely (in my opinion) nice and cosy hotel - no deluxe rooms but nice hotel though. I'll let you know what they say.
- All day tours are private, except for the snorkelling and helicopter ride. Golden Circle day is a private day tour, with snorkeling activity in a group.. I can give you a quote for a private tour if you want
- I will arrange an airport transfer for the 3rd one, I will do that when I know where you will be staying and what you will be doing that day
- The exchange rate is 114 ISK towards the USD. So the day trips would be 1400-1820 USD for all of you together (2-3 persons)
I'll wait for what Hótel Rangá and Hótel Lækur say. In case if they do not have the availability or you don't like the idea of Lækur, I will check Hótel Grímsborgir and see what they say
Hótel Lækur does not have an availability, But Hótel Selið has. Hótel Selið is also a cosy countryside hotel near to Lækur, with no light pollution.
Grímsborgir do also have an availability both from 8. November throughout 13. November - so you can stay there before Rangá, after or both, or the whole time. sgl deluxe room costs 39.900 ISK pr night.
Can I help you make some decisions and get this trip confirmed? Given that your dates are approaching it would be good to start wrapping things up.
Hi Kristin! I will let my friend decide on the hotels. I dont really care where we stay as long as it's a convenient location to explore from.
Do you recommend we spend the first night at Rey, or just head to the south from the airport?
We would like to have at least the last night at Rey.
- Agree to wait to have hotels lined up before coordinating transportation for the 3rd friend on the 11th.
- remember that for the 11th and 12th we need 2 rooms or a room big enough for 3 people.
Hi, Here attached is the program as it looks now, with approximated rate in USD. Would be great having the first night in Grímsborgir, and the last one in Reykjavík as you indicates. How do you like the program as it looks now?
HI kristin and thank you.
Program looks great . The only day that we dont know what to do is the 12th. I assume that this is because we havent decided which hellicopter ride to do that day , and we will to see/do something before of after the helli ride.
The hotels need to be chosen today. If aola is busy I will take care of this this evening.
To make sure I am following your recommendations:
8th night in Grimsborgir: to be booked by us
9-10th- Ranga (no further availability to extend stay but I will recheck tonight just in case someone cancelled).
11th: WHERE DO U SUGGEST?
12th: hotel in REY, probably Alda unless you have another recommendation.
does this look ok to you? does this plan match and facilitate the flow of the trip as you design it? should i make changes?
Hi Kristen, would it be possible to stay at the HOTEL GRIMSBORGIR that is our preferred hotel. IF so, we would stay there from 8 - 11th . THe 8 -10 one room and on the 11th adding a second room other option is get a big room to accommodate 3 people studio or junior suite
correction: we would stay there 8-12th= 4 nights (checking out on the 12th).
Last night in rey
Since it's Friday afternoon in Iceland I would suggest we book this in the next few hours. The exact details can be filled in later, but it would be good to get the framework in place now.
Is hotel Grimsborgir a conveninient location to follow the plan that Kristin sent us?
do you recommend keeping ranga hotel 9-11th?
I will make sure Kristin weighs in on the hotel location, but since she had suggested it I assume it works. It looks like 50 minutes from where the Midgard office is, so it would add a bit of driving every day.
Do you prefer to book the hotel yourself? Or would you like us to take care of it?
The price I am getting in Hotels.com is better without free cancellation.
I will do the following:
1- book grimborgir hotel for the first night on the 8th as recommended by kristin x 2 people
2- keep Ranga hotel for the 9th and 10th x 2 people (reserved)
3- book grimborgir hotel again for the 11th x 3 people
4- we will book hotel in REY for the last night on the 12th (Alda or Icelandair) x 3 people
what do u think?
Sounds good. I think that makes sense since you will be closer to the action for those 2 nights in Ranga!
cool i am booking now
Next step, I will send you a link so you can pay an initial deposit to reserve your program with Midgard. Once we know the exact amount you can settle final payment
Please go ahead and submit your deposit when you are ready to commit.
thanks!! you can go ahead and charge me the deposit
All other tours & services are confirmed, but still waiting for the snorkelling. Looking forward to having you over!! The pick up time for the tours are:
pick up time Date Itinearary
06:45 08.11.2016 early Arrival. 6.45 AM. Reykjanes Peninsula
10:00 09.11.2016 Þórsmörk
10:00 10.11.2016 South Coast & Ice Walk
TBA 11.11.2016 Golden Circle & snorkelling. Airport pick up for the 3rd one at 15:30
10:00 12.11.2016 Hot Spring Hike
12:00 13.11.2016 Departure at 12.00 via Blue Lagoon
I'm waiting for a confirmation of a departure time for the snorkelling, so I'm not sure when it is best to start the Golden Circle tour. I will let you know.
I hope you will have an outstanding time here in Iceland! Please revert should you have any questions or comments :)
I wanted to send you a quick note to wish you a great trip in Iceland! You will be in excellent hands with the Midgard Team.
Look forward to hear about your experience!
The tour guide Begga was super nice , on time, and we always felt felt and comfortable with her.
A few things that could have been done better:
1- it would have been nice to have received a detailed itinerary before getting there (we had a 5 line itinerary before the trip).
2- more information (geography, history) about the places we were seeing/visiting
Kristin helped organize the trip and all that we decided to do, we did it.
Grimsborgir was pretty desolated so we would have preferred to be in Reyvajvik a few more nights. I understood that Grimsborgir was the best place to be doing excursions from. Unfortunately it rained all week and we did not see the northern lights which was another reason we stayed in Grimsborgir.
