“HI there. Keen to do the ring road self-drive option around Iceland with my husband. Have looked at a few websites and the prices for car hire plus accommodation seemed like quite a lot. just wondering what your company could quote for a self-drive tour.

Hi, welcome to kimkim! I'm Chris and I will be your kimkim travel specialist for your trip to Iceland. I’ll work with you to put together a great custom itinerary for your trip.
For accommodations, are you comfortable with guesthouses that have shared bathroom facilities between a few of the rooms?
Yea that sounds okay
Thanks for your reply
Ok, I found accommodation options for $991 for the 9 nights, about $100 more to upgrade 3 of the nights to nicer places. For car rental, I can get an automatic compact car for $291 for the 10 days, or an SUV with more space and 4WD for $471.
That sounds pretty good. I would pay 100 more for up grade and depending on how small the compact car is i would cobsidet pating more for the bigger car. Our flight out of retkjavic is at 6am on the 4th
Ok, in that case I think it makes sense to stay near KEF airport on 4/3 so that you can easily get to the airport the next morning.
To set the expectations: If you are happy with the overall direction of the itinerary based on the ring road article, along with price estimates, we would ask you to pay a deposit of the kimkim service fee.
Then I will make some more customizations based on your feedback, and make all reservations for hotels and car rental, as well as any other tours or activities you want to join. I will also put together detailed day-by-day information for all of the sights, stops, and optional detours, as well as restaurant recommendations for each of the areas that you will visit.
Here's a more detailed itinerary for each day of the trip: https://www.kimkim.com/c/2-week-extended-ring-road-drive-highlights-of-iceland-and-the-remote-westfjords
Once you are ready, you can enter your payment information here, which I will use for the service fee and to make all reservations. I can also make customizations to the itinerary based on your feedback and add more information and restaurant recommendations for each of the days.
Just put my payment though. Not sure how long it will take
Thanks. I will charge the service fee at this time and make all of the reservations for you today. Then I will update the itinerary I sent you with the updated details and information.
Also. What model is the small car. If it's very small we may consider paying more for a bigger one. Thanks. I havnt had a chance to look at all the emails yet as I've been at work but thanks.
Since your flight in is later than I previously expected, I think the rental car will be 1-day less in price:
Here are 2 options:
- Compact (Kia Rio or similar): $297 USD
- SUV (Jeep Renegade, 4WD): $428 USD
You can add Rental Car Excess Insurance for $10 USD/day if you like.
I think our travel insurance may cover rental cars so we will go for the jeep car. Thanks
Without the added insurname cost
Ok, to be clear, you mean the SUV, not the compact car, right?
Yep the suv
Also, let me know if you are interested in any of the following activities along the route:
- Lava Cave Tour
- Whale Watching in the north
- Glacier Walk
- Blue Lagoon
How much for whale watching and blue lagoon? Keen on both those. We want to be flexible so are we able to decide on the day and book some of those things while we are there too?
We will go with the vitara
Here are some different package options for the blue lagoon: http://www.bluelagoon.com/blue-lagoon-spa/prices-and-packages/ (within the day, the price varies based on the popular times, but the prices on the first page are a good ballpark).
I'll find a few Whale Watching options for you for April.
The Blue Lagoon would be best to reserve in advance, since it can be fully booked. In April you could probably join a tour on arrival if you want to hold off (or check availability 1-2 days in advance), but it could mean that everything is reserved.
The Húsavík Original Whale Watching Tour (3 hours) is ISK 10.900 ($94 USD) per adult, another tour starts in May, but you would be in Husavik a couple days before that.
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. We would be keen to just book the regular blue standard entrance without the tour. We would like to do the whale watching though.
It closed whe we first arrive I think (the blue lagoon) but hopefully open towards the end of our trip
Hi, the Blue Lagoon is open on May 3 until 9pm (last entrance 8pm). Since you will be coming from the south coast, you will have an option to do the Golden Circle loop if you like, or just head straight to the Reykjanes Peninsula and Blue Lagoon. Perhaps an arrival time of around 6pm would be good? that way you will still have the flexibility?
I'll book the whale watching tour for 4/29, when you will be going from Akureyri to Laky Myvatn, as Husavik is between those 2 areas.
Would we have time to do the golden circle loop and the blue lagoon. don't want to miss out on the blue lagoon. Thanks
reykjanes peninsula looks good too. would we have time for all thress
It's 1:45 to Gullfoss that day, and another 2 hours from Gulfoss to Blue Lagoon (via Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir).
Gullfoss and Geysir can be seen relatively quickly, so you should be able to do all that plus a couple of stops on the Reykjanes Peninsula that day if you like.
