“We are looking for aurora sightings, perhaps things like dogsledding, snowmobiling, glacier sighting???, skating, any such winter activities”

Trip planning conversation
Hi, welcome to kimkim!
I'll work with you to create a custom itinerary for Iceland. Do you know your dates for your trip / have flights booked already?
I'm looking at a a week in February. DO not have tx yet.
Dog sledding, snowmobiling, glacier walking, ice climbing, ice caving, skiing, are all popular winter activities.
And of course there are hikes, waterfalls, and other beautiful places to see as well just on your feet.
I'm looking at February 4-10. Aurora sighting is a huge attraction. Dogsledding, ice caving, snowmobiling are the biggest interest.
A few questions to get you started:
- Are you looking to drive yourself, or do you prefer either small multi-day tours or a bunch of single day excursions?
- What sort of accommodation are you looking for, or a target budget so that I can make some recommendations (higher end, mid range, boutique, budget)
You should know that in Winter roads can be icy, and you would need a car with 4WD and snow tires. Just check the road conditions each day to make sure there are no warnings.
Well we are on a budget... and we are not completely comfortable driving by ourselves.
Aurora is never guaranteed, but it depends on clear skies, darkness, and the activity. With a week you should have a good chance to see it, and you'll have plenty of darkness. The best places are out of Reykjavik.
O we want the glacier walking as well.
Ok, I'll send a few multiday tour options, as well as single day excursions where you leave from Reykjavik.
SO I should look for a hotel in Reykjavik?
One other option could be to take a domestic flight to somewhere like Akureyri in the north. It's about 1 hour from Lake Myvatn which has lots of geothermal areas, craters, waterfalls. And it's further from Reykjavik so that there is less light pollution (that's where I saw the northern lights a few weeks ago)
I can help you find accommodation. I will put together a few suggestions for activities and lodging budget.
Awesome! Thank you! And going somewhere remote would be awesome!
Sure thing. I'll also invite a local expert from Iceland that we work with who knows a lot about different winter options. I'll add him to this conversation and you may see him join tomorrow (since it's later in the day in Iceland already).
Ok. I work out of the office tomorrow so email might be the best way to contact me.
Ok. He will probably respond here first (you will get an email when their is an update). He will see this message too and can email you as well.
Awesome! I appreciate it.
My pleasure. If he isn't able to respond tomorrow (he just got back from a trip), then I'll jump back in again.
I´m the local agent in Iceland, Matthías
I´ll put together an itinerary proposal as soon as possible :) Do you have any further details regarding your trip you´d like me to know before creating an itinerary?
Hello Mathias. Thank you for your time. No I think I listed all the things we're interested in. We love doing different things so we are excited to see your proposal. Thanks!
And don't be afraid to suggest things...we love nature as well so any beautiful scenery u think we would like is an option as well.
Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I am currently working on your itinerary and will be able to get it to you within the next hour :)
Hi Mathias. I do have a few questions. Is keflavik and Reykjavik the same airport? Would these prices stay the same if we come in January instead of February?
Keflavik is the only international ariport in Iceland. It´s in a town that is 45 minutes away from Reykjavik. The Blue lagoon is located en rote between the two.
Reykjavik´s ariport is for domestic use only, and is very small
The price would remain the same coming in mid January onwards, the christmas vacation is more expensive
Note that price does not include international flights ( see list of included)
That is so weird. Priceline brings up Reykjavik but not keflavik. I wonder if we wouldn't land in the larger airport. So we were wondering if we could experience the dog sledding one day instead of whale watching 2 days?
Ok I double checked the flights. It lists the 2 airports as the same one so that is ok.
I will see if I can book dog sledding on day 5. Give me a few hours and I will get back to you about the tour. Thank you!
There currently only one whale watching tour included. I think it says Reykjavik on your flight ticket because 45 minutes between the center of Reykjavik and Keflavik airport isn't that significant, much like Gatwick in London!
But yeah, do let me know what you think!
I was looking at the suggestions for day one! Sorry about that! It looks so exciting and I can't wait to show my sisters the tour and get the green light to book. Thank so much for all your hard work!
Wonderful :) Look forward to hearing from you guys!
I booked my tickets. We arrive January 22 at 5 am. ( sorry!) We would like to book your itinerary.
Hi, I added the proposal here so that you can book it. The price quoted now is in USD (in the pdf it was in GBP). I broke it up into 2 installments, the first one is 30% of the total.
Everything cleared. Y'all should have the 30 %. Thanks!
Hi, We received your payment. Thank you! Matthias will be in touch with further details.
Thanks! We are super excited!
Hey I have a question. WIll we see any ice caves on our journey?
Right now, the itinerary does not include ice-caving. I could help you out with that , I guess we´ll talk about it once you´re here?
Sounds perfect. Thanks!
Another question:) I noticed there is one evening of aurora hunting. DO you think we will see anything or should I set up more aurora huntings? I am also looking into dog sledding on our fifth day and I think there is only one outfit in that area so that is good. The only thing is, that means we need to squeeze the ice cave stuff into another day. Just an update to let you know what I am thinking :)
If the northern light trip gets cancelled due to weather or bad forecast you get a complimentary trip the following night :)
O sweet. Thanks!!!
Hey Matthias sorry to bother you again. Once you have the days organized do you mind giving me a timeliness for day 2? What time is whale watching and what time do the super jeeps pick us up? I want to plan the rest of that day . Also on day 1, we'll probably be pretty tired but I want to have ideas lined up in case we have energy;therefore I'd like to know how long people usually spend at the blue lagoon. Thanks!
1. 2 hours max in the lagoon before you start to get a headache
2. Whale watching for 13:00-16:00
3. Superjeep pickup 20:30
Hey Mathias, to fit everything into the schedule, I am currently working on doing dog sledding on day 2 before the whale watching. DO we need to be at our hotel to meet our ride at 1300 or is that when we need to be at the boat by 1300? My only other option would be to ask for transportation to Klaki Base Camp on day 1 by 1230. What do you think?
Hi! sorry for the late reply! The whale watching meeting point is at the harbor at 12:30. Do you want me to change that reservation ?
Thanks! Is there a later reservation for whale watching?
OK so here is what I worked out with the dog sledding. They will pick us up at 0800 and the activity is 3-5 hours. If I get them to drop us off at the port, we'd be cutting it close but there is a chance we would make it.
Alright I see!, and to answer your question - no in winter there´s one departure per day - I´ll notify the whale watching company that you might be late and if possible to wait - they´ll do so
Thank you. I am beginning to think we should have stayed 2 weeks!!!!!
Haha this will be great trip - perhaps you will like it so much that youd like to go for a longer trip over summer later! :)
Probably! I looked at some summer activities and it looks amazing! I think Iceland has some beautiful waterfalls!!!!! I've never been there but I think I'm in love with Iceland already! I need to work like crazy first and maybe we can go back during the summer!
haha so happy to hear you´re so thrilled about your trip! It´ll will be absolutely fantastic!
Our trips are never predictable and this trip was no exception! I generally plan my own trips from beginning to end but this time to avoid stress, I went with an agency. Kimkim was fabulous to work with and Matthias was always there to smooth out the wrinkles and make sure we knew what was happening. We absolutely loved our adventure and will definitely consider using the agency again on future adventures!
Matthias was very concerned with making sure our trip went as smoothly as possible. His communication skills are fantastic as well as his knowledge about Iceland and his ability to make sure your vacation is fabulous!
