Mýrdalsjökull Glacier Snowmobiling, South Coast

Overview

Set just north of Vik along Iceland's South Coast is the country's fourth-largest glacier, Mýrdalsjökull. Reaching about 5000 feet (1500 m), this giant ice cap covers the Katla Volcano. Although it sits atop one of the country's most active volcanoes, snowmobiling across its ice and snow is a safe and thrilling way to explore Iceland's famed landscapes. When Katla does erupt, the glacier usually subdues the aftermath, releasing enormous amounts of smoke and ash rather than lava.

If the weather is clear, you can enjoy endless views of glacier landscapes and scenery over south Iceland. Whether a seasoned snowmobiler or a beginner, anyone can enjoy this unique glacial exploration! As you glide across the glacier, you'll also learn more about Mýrdalsjökull and Katla and how they influence life in Iceland.
