Bessi Jónsson

I grew up on a farm in northern Iceland and have explored the island extensively with my family and as a mountain rescue member. I'm a certified professional tourist guide and have gained experience as a search and rescue driver, certified by the Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides and the Iceland Tourist Guide Association.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I´m an All-Iceland specialist with experience in 4x4 driving, mountaineering, glacier hiking, and ice caving."

How did you get involved in travel?

"For as long as I can remember, I have been an explorer. As a young child on the farm, I often went camping alone. My parents would also take me all over the island, and we would travel the ring road, having different experiences each time. My sister and I loved swimming, so one ring road trip was about pools. We swam 3 to 6 times daily in different pools or hot springs. As an adult, I have traveled the island alone and with the Icelandic Search And Rescue teams. I worked in an office for a few years, and I have never been as unhappy in my life. So, I quit that job and decided only to do things that make me happy. Now, I travel for a living and have never been happier."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"After traveling for three days without seeing anyone, I set up a tent in central Iceland. I was completely alone, with only my dog Cami and the gods for company. There was not a sound. It was total peace and the closest to heaven you can get."
