Best of Todra Gorge

Top itineraries and travel advice in and around Todra Gorge
Limestone cliffs tower above the Todra Gorge, a dramatic river canyon in Morocco’s eastern Atlas Mountains. A magnet for hikers and rock climbers, the gorge narrows to a width of just 33 ft (10 m) in places with sheer walls stretching to heights over 500 ft (152 m). The view is most dramatic in the morning when the first rays of the day bathe the canyon walls in a golden light. Canyon adventures aside, Todra is also a good place to explore a palm-filled oasis nearby and learn about one of Morocco’s nomadic peoples.

Rock climbers of all levels can hone their skills on the many routes up the canyon walls, while hikers can head off on treks both through the gorge and up to some impressive lookouts high above. This is also prime terrain for mountain biking. For a break from the heat, take a walk through the Tinghir palm grove, an oasis in the heart of the arid pre-Saharan zone where you can see farmers irrigating their crops amid the verdant greenery and crumbling ruins of old kasbahs.
