What you'll do

It's common to begin your adventure in Punta Arenas, where you'll meet your guide at Plaza Muñoz Guerrero, a central square adorned with French street lamps and a statue of Magellan. Take in the neoclassical architecture as your guide tells you about the city's rich history and 19th-century sheep-ranching families who once owned the nearby mansions. Next, you may head to Palacio Sara Braun, a prominent neoclassical mansion overlooking the plaza. Inside, perhaps you'll marvel at the luxurious dining halls and billiard rooms, a testament to the immense wealth generated by the sheep trade.

After learning about the city's history, shift gears and head to the revitalized waterfront area, where it's common to enjoy a leisurely seaside walk along the boardwalk as you view artistic sculptures. The fresh breeze and beautiful ocean views make this a delightful and relaxing experience. Next, perhaps you'll venture a few miles west of Punta Arenas to the Reserva Nacional Magallanes, a 33,000-acre forest reserve locally known as Parque Japonés. You can follow a nature trail lined with lenga and coigue trees and spot local wildlife, like avutardas, coigues, chincoles, and foxes.

Next, you may head to Mirador Cerro de la Cruz, a viewpoint overlooking the city and the Strait of Magellan. It's an excellent spot to snap photos as you watch the sunset over Patagonia, bathing the landscape in a golden hue. From here, your guide will likely take you back to the city to enjoy a local dinner. Punta Arenas is renowned for its seafood, so try the local specialties like chupe de centolla ("souffle of king crab"), oysters, scallops, and other shellfish when you get the chance.

It was really a good rest for us, having flown more than 38 hours to reach Santiago and to continue on to Punta Arenas. We could spend our time leisurely exploring the place and to recuperate from the long distance travel.

Tips for future travelers

It is a good decision as we need not have to waste time going to the airport the next day to catch a flight to Punta Arenas.
