Hike Trolltunga

Overview

Located outside the small village of Skjeggedal (in Hordaland County, western Norway) is Trolltunga, otherwise known as the "troll's tongue." This is no mythical creature—rather, it's a vantage point situated 1,100 meters (3,608 feet) above sea level that looks out over some of the most stunning scenery in the country. Getting there is no simple feat, either. Reaching Trolltunga requires an epic 8-10 hour hike with a height gain of 2,952 feet (900 meters).

The trail winds through various sections culminating with the "Ferrata himelstigen" or ladder to heaven. This is where you'll reach the famous Trolltunga—a smooth rock formation in the shape of a tongue that juts out over Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The views are spectacular and are among the most photographed in all of Norway. Guided tours are recommended as this is a challenging hike that requires wind-and-waterproof clothing and enough food and water for the day.
