Garde Hotel & Warders Cottages, Perth

Upscale
Contemporary Fremantle retreat with adjoining historic cottages, Asian-inspired dining, and a small spa

Overview

Modern design meets 19th-century Australian character at this stylish stay in Fremantle's "Convict Quarter." Once a police headquarters, the hotel's limestone-and-glass facade now blends creatively with a series of convict-built cottages, while interiors evoke Western Australian landscapes with jarrah timber, Austral marble, and Indigenous art. Rooms are minimalist but luxe, with floating king beds and handcrafted furniture. Guests can choose between three on-site restaurants, book a sauna session in the spa, or head across the street to the UNESCO-listed Fremantle Prison and the historic Fremantle Market.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The location puts you directly across from the UNESCO-listed Fremantle Prison and within easy walking distance of lively restaurants, colonial architecture, and the port's boardwalks and beaches.
  • Rooms are spread throughout the modern wing and the historic convict-built cottages; designs and layouts vary, but all include floating king beds dressed with luxurious linens, marble bathrooms, complimentary minibars, and espresso machines.
  • On-site restaurants Emily Taylor and Anglesea serve Asian-inspired dishes and craft cocktails, while the stone-and-timber Gambit bar is a cozy spot for coffee and small bites.
  • Guests are invited to sip local craft beers and Western Australian wines during a complimentary happy hour in the Anglesea bar each evening.
  • Upgraded rooms have their own still and sparkling water taps, and there are communal taps on all levels of the hotel.
Cons
  • The smallest Gus Holding units are very compact and lack exterior views; upgrade to a Gus Deluxe for more space, a floating window-side king bed, and a freestanding bath.
  • Guests need to book ahead (and pay an additional fee) to reserve the spa's sauna and ice shower.

Authenticity

Fremantle's first 5-star hotel opened in late 2025, after a team of local architects and designers reimagined this former police station and linked it with six neighboring 19th-century cottages (originally built for the colonial Fremantle Prison). Despite the contemporary design, nods to Western Australian culture and nature are ever-present among the interiors—think accents of jarrah timber and Austral marble, colorful pieces by Noongar artists, a palette of burnt oranges and soft greens inspired by red gum bark and eucalyptus leaves, and a sail-draped ceiling that mimics the colors of a Fremantle sunset.

Location

You'll stay in Fremantle, Perth's hip, historic sibling that lies just south of the city at the mouth of the Swan River. The UNESCO-listed Fremantle Prison and the vibrant Fremantle Markets lie directly opposite the hotel, and it's a 10-minute stroll east from the Fremantle Train Station, where trains connect with Perth in under 30 minutes. In 15 minutes, you can walk west to reach the breweries, boardwalks, and beaches of Fishing Boat Harbor, or turn south to reach the "Cappuccino Strip," lined with cafés, restaurants, and bars. The hotel offers paid off-site parking and EV chargers, but you'll need to book ahead.

Rooms & Bathrooms

You'll find 106 rooms and suites here, divided between the modern block and the historic cottages. Compact Gus units feel the most contemporary, with warm woods and modular furniture, while Helen and Laura suites add square footage and options for balconies. Terrace rooms have more vintage character, mixing original timbers and stonework with handcrafted furniture, decorative fireplaces, and exposed copper piping; some include private courtyards and kitchenettes. All units offer floating king beds, luxurious linens, espresso machines, and marble bathrooms with rain-style showers and Australian Rohr Remedy toiletries. Multiple accessible rooms are available for guests with limited mobility.

Amenities

Guests can take their pick of three dining options: nab a table at Anglesea for creative Japanese and Korean-inspired dishes, cross the road to Emily Taylor for Asian-accented sharing plates and colorful cocktails, or pop by Gimlet for coffee, small bites, and local beers in a cozier setting. Breakfast is included in the stay, as are complimentary evening drinks, both served in Anglesea's stylish dining space off the lobby. There's no gym or pool, but the small spa offers a sauna, an ice shower, and treatment rooms for massages and facials using products inspired by Australian botanicals and traditional bush medicine.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome here, though the hotel tends to be more popular with couples. The Family Cottage is the best fit for little ones, with a king bed, bunk beds, a kitchenette, and its own private entrance and courtyard.
