Pangboche to heli tour + bhutan, Nepal - May 21 - Jun 9, 2017

Traveler: Glenn K. - Local specialist: Ngima Dorji Sherpa

Although we never saw Ngima during our journey, his staff was on top of all aspects of our trip and everything went smoothly (except for the traffic in Katmandu, but even that was part of the "experience").

I have had the opportunity of planning travel with several established companies previously, ie Backroads, Vermont BicycleTours, Costa Rica Expeditions. The experience we had with Quechua Treks / Mayra was EXCEPTIONAL. She truly designed an itinerary specific for my family which was unique and certainly not the traditional Inca Trail/Machu Pichu visit. The opportunity to do the Lares Trek allowed us to see amazing countryside and visit with actual native folks. This was only possible because of Mayra's long history in this area and mastery of the Quechuan dialect. We did not see other tourists for 3 days! We found her crew (horsemen , cooks) to be professional, friendly and very punctual. The specialty guides arranged for us were very knowledgeable, truly bilingual and obviously proud to show us their country, not just going through the motions. This trip involved multiple lodging and transportation connections which all took place seamlessly. Accommodations were described accurately and there were no unexpected "surprises" either in quality of lodging, food or additional expenses. Most importantly Mayra was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and flexible with our desires. She is genuine and professional and an outstanding representative for KIMKIM.

Jordan, Jordan - Jun 16 - Jun 19, 2017

Traveler: Michael K. - Local specialist: Bianca Abma

Everyone we had contact with was friendly, professional and spoke excellent English. Small hick up with a driver who overslept, but Bianca was right on it. The person who took us on the Jeep trip was excellent and was very knowledgeable about the area. I would highly recommend him.

Blanca was easy to get hold of and very responsive when we needed to contact her.

Bianca Abma, local specialist, responded to this review:

Michael, thank you for your beautiful review and compliments. For sure, I will share it with Abdullh, who was your guide in Wadi Rum. It was my pleasure to help you organising your Jordan trip. And I was happy to help you out wherever it was needed. Warm greetings from Wadi Rum, Bianca

Vietnam and thailand, Vietnam - May 29 - Jun 17, 2017

Traveler: Nicola M. - Local specialist: Andy Carroll

Andy went through all the details prior to our visit, so when we arrived, the trip was tailored to exactly what we had asked. The organization, once we were in Vietnam, was excellent. Someone was always waiting to meet us, and the guides were all friendly and informative.

No effort was spared to make little tweaks and changes. Correspondence was friendly and made us feel very comfortable about trusting Andy with our trip.

I do have some feedback, really for North Sailing, but wanted to share here too since they are a partner of KimKim. We went on a whale watching tour which departed from Husavik. The seas were rough on the day of our reservations. When we checked in, the person assisting noted this to us - I was not sure exactly what this meant. They had already canceled some of the other trips that day.

We were provided with the jumpers, raincoats, and gloves. The waves were about 10 feet high and a number of them broke partially over the bow of the boat. There was no rain. The boat seemed to rock side to side at roughly a 20-degree angle. My mom (70 yrs-old), who was for a short time next to the side about mid-way down, noted that the sea level was about 2 1/2 to 3 feet from the top of the boat railing. Our backpacks were placed on a bench in front of the captain's control room (bridge on larger ships) and with one of the tips went sliding off and hit the side of the boat where my mom was standing. My husband followed shortly thereafter. He was also seated on the same bench. He slammed into my mom and she sustained a knee injury - it still needs to be diagnosed but it is either a sprain or possibly a minor tear.

After that, one of the guides was very helpful in helping my mom (I was too sick to assist). She made sure she had a raincoat and gloves and brought her to a better location on the boat (top deck). I was sick nearly the whole time. I am susceptible to motion sickness so I knew this would be a possibility; however, over the course of the trip about 2/3 of the approximately 24 guests had thrown up at least once.

That all being said, we did see whales. My perspective is that the decision to go out was not a good call. The conditions I would say were unsafe - considering that it is not unfathomable that someone could have gone overboard which would be pretty terminal (the life ring would not do much in those kinds of seas) - and the majority of the guests were sick. In the cafe afterward, some of the guests appeared pretty stunned - starring into space. Please pass along to North Sailing.

Overall, we were very happy with Chris' work on the Iceland trip. He provided valuable input that really shaped the trip itinerary. We ended up going around the ring road which we would not have thought of if Chris had not suggested it. We are so glad we did! Having information on the sites was very helpful and of course having someone knowledgeable about lodging and booking the accommodations, car rental, and activities was super!

Honeymoon!, Colombia - May 31 - Jun 7, 2017

Traveler: Ashlee H. - Local specialist: Nathalie Clavel

We enjoyed our activities. However, on two occasions our guide/driver arrived earlier than listed so they had to wait for us a bit. I hope they didn't mind! Also, the hotel for our beach excursion was not aware that we were to have access to a room for changing and leaving out items as described in our outline (so we were unable to do so). No big deal though.

Nathalie was very helpful and patient during the planning stages. She listed to what we wanted and was flexible with our requests. We enjoyed working with her!

Mayra showed empathy and concern and worked with me to plan alternate contingencies and to keep me updated on the latest news. I heard from her from late at night to early in the morning. She stayed with me as things changed and I felt like she really cared about me and my trip. She made it happen, and our tour was completed and we arrived at Machu Picchu on time. She followed up afterward to make sure everything was okay.

He worked out a trip that made sense, mostly, and it was well organized, everything was thought out in advance and worked out, nearly, perfectly.

The only reason the trip was not perfect was that the weather interfered since we started with a flight to Lukla that was weather-dependent, so we lost 1.5 days from our trek and had to shorten it by a destination. This was not Ngima's fault, of course. But, in hindsight, I'd recommend that if one is on a very short trip like we were, then losing a few days to weather (only because of flying, we can hike in rain) is painful and I'd recommend a destination that does not require such a flight if it is going to be vulnerable due to weather.

Ngima Dorji Sherpa, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thank you very much Joseph for taking your time in sharing your wonderful trek experience. We are glad that you enjoyed your trip but yes weather was a bit challenging.

We heartily thank you for appreciating our services and we hope to serve you again in near future for your next trip in Nepal.

Best wishes,

Ngima.

Also, a module for the agent to provide local contact details we could have downloaded directly would be great (or kimkim app to save them) and the possibility to download the conversations locally for when we do not have wifi once on the trip.

Otherwise, the platform and concept were really good. Already recommended it in a few Montreal newspaper/tv. Good job guys!

Carina was great, always accessible and made all necessary adjustments before our arrival. Amazing job!

While everything turned out to be fine I would have felt more comfortable with some sort of voucher. Also, the receipts for payment are not itemized. That would also be appreciated. We did have a couple minor hiccups. Our guide had a hard time locating our snorkel group and the snorkel group had us booked for the next day. It was all worked out and we got to snorkel but there were about 45 minutes of confusion.

On our second day of touring, we had been told that lunch was included. It was not. We had not brought along any food. Luckily our guide shared his extra food with us and all was fine. But had he not we would have gone very hungry as this was an all day tour.

But not to focus on the negatives! We had wonderful and personal experiences with guides who customized our trips. They were all friendly and full of information. We had three days of very rainy weather and they all helped us enjoy ourselves despite that. Booking with kimkim was convenient with the chat function and spread out payment. I would use the service again.

These extra expenses are very particular to the area. I have never before experienced having to pay for all these things and. I am surprised that no-one has thought of informing of these extra costs.

Meals were provided but I was always only allowed to order 1 item per meal. This was really not enough when trekking for long hours every day.

Also tipping of guide and porter was a substantial extra expense - 250 USD shared among them. As a lone traveller this has been an extremely costly affair. The guide and porter I was happy with though.

I was overall very pleased with Ngima but I would have appreciated the information I have mentioned previously.

- Nepal entry visa fee
- Personal natured expenses like phone, laundry, gratitude, etc.
- Your personal trekking gears and equipments.
- Hot shower and hot drinking water during trek.
- Your insurance and emergency rescue evacuation if required.
- Any items not mentioned in "Service included section"

* Note : Airfares are subject to change without prior notice.

Regarding your comment on drinking water, hot shower, wifi and battery charging cost, please refer to the 5th and 7th points on "price excludes" section which clearly defines that hot shower and drinking water is not included in the given cost. Also your personal expenses like wifi and battery charging related to phone are also not included in the given cost. I hope you realize that we had informed everything in advance before you book your trip.

Regarding meals, I had a long meeting with your trek guide Mr. Mingma Gyaljen Sherpa regarding this issue and he informed me the exact scenario on what actually happened. I hope you are well known about the fact that breakfast, lunch and dinner are given one time each per day and is also mentioned in the cost include section. Tea/ coffee is provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner (which comes out to be 3 tea/coffee per day) but I suppose you were served tea/ coffee more than 3 times a day. Your trek price was also budgeted based on 1 time breakfast, lunch and dinner per day. Any extra expenses besides these three meals should be born by trekkers themselves which is obvious. The guide informed me that he had informed everything regarding your meal plan on trek briefing after you reach Lukla.

And lastly about tipping, gratitude is also mentioned in cost excluded section. Tipping is a private matter and decision based on your level of satisfaction. The tip of $250 shows that you are very very happy with the trek and services of our staffs and our company.

I hope my above clarification is now able to erase all your confusion and assure you that you were in the safe hands during your visit in Nepal. I appreciate your honesty in placing forth your feelings and experience without any exaggeration besides the confused points.

Thank you for travelling with us.

Best wishes,

Ngima.

Iceland trip, Iceland - May 9 - May 14, 2017

Traveler: Mitchell H. - Local specialist: Halldor Bjarkason

Small hiccup that was weather related. Could have been more responsive during the planning period. Itinerary was outstanding and the way that it was adjusted when the weather threw a monkey wrench was great. Otherwise, we loved it.

Timing of responses could have been better. When I started directly emailing him and calling while in Iceland, communication was much better

Ethiopia, Ethiopia - May 8 - May 13, 2017

Traveler: Jonny P. - Local specialist: Marco Degasper

Really loved using kimkim. Made everything really simple and convenient. All aspects of the trip were great. The highlights of the trip were the guides - both Bekele and Tadele were awesome to hang out with. I liked pulling over to talk to random people on the street and going on spontaneous adventures. It felt like a bunch of friends hanging out rather than a guided tour.

Marco Degasper, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Jonny and Rio,
it's great to hear that you fully enjoyed the tour. Don't forget to promote Ethiopia abroad...
Best for you and Rio,

Giorga did a nice job. She answered emails in a timely fashion and her responses were mostly clear. She was as responsive as possible when our driver did not show for a pick up from the VCE airport. Considering we were using a water taxi as transportation from VCE and had never been to Italy, this was somewhat challenging.

Anniversary trip, Iceland - May 4 - May 11, 2017

Traveler: Patrick M. - Local specialist: Chris McCarty

It would be great if kimkim could provide google maps links that provide a driving route. I manually created google maps routes each night for the next day- although i am fine with doing it, but i dont think other folks would have been ok with tackling that activity. The manual entry was challenging with the spelling of icelandic destinations.

Chris' trip was outatanding, and I greatly appreciated how he went the extra mile to find a riding tour that was appropriate for my wife's riding experience. It was a highlight of the trip!

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Patrick, I'm glad that you had a nice trip and that your wife enjoyed the riding experience! Thank you for the feedback about the Google maps, we have been more consistent with this since your trip for our future travels, and I'm sure that they appreciate your part in that.

We had an amazing time, and thought that KimKim did quite a good job, especially given the short notice for our trip. There were several issues that could have been better:

This happened to us on several occassions, which caused us to spend time that could have been better spent at places that were simply not accessable.
2) In some of the itinerary, there could have been more detail in terms of actually finding the locations. As an example, where exactly is Hvalnes Nature Reserve? It would be useful, when doing a self guided tour to have more specific directions and suggestions about what to look out for, where to turn, and where to park, etc.
3) In the town of Vik, it would have been I good idea to let us know that we needed to call ahead to make reservations for dinner.
4) There was some really sketchy and somewhat dangerous driving, and I think that we could have been better prepared for that. In addition, the driving times in many instances were a severe underestimate of the actual driving time.

These things being said, we did have an exciting and unforgettable trip!

We thought that Chris did a very good job, and was quite helpful when I reached out to him during the trip.

Our 3 generational family trip into the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit was absolutely stunning!! From beginning to end, we were impressed with the input from Amanda in the organisation/communication with loads of questions promptly answered. She was very friendly and helpful and met us both before and after the hike - we would not hesitate to book through kimkim again and use Himalayan Trails. Both hotels were perfectly suited in both location and budget, we particularly enjoyed 'Mums Garden' in Pokhara after the hike - a sanctuary to rest weary legs!

As for the hike itself - we were extremely grateful to our fantastic guide Chhiri. He was both very professional and knowledgeable and good company. He and the two porters, Sam and Siri made our hike all the more special. They did far more than meet the minimum requirements of a guide/porting service, they became good friends and went out of their way to share their culture, country and themselves with us.

17 days hiking with 3 generations couldn't have been done in a more special place. The days walking were well mixed with some longer and others shorter, when altitude became a factor. The weather was perfect which always is a bonus and the Tsum valley was probably the highlight (just ahead of Larke Pass) - The mix of monasteries and walking through ancient villages was very special. Chhiri was also very caring and conscientious with the responsibility of taking my 10yr old daughter on such a long hike. While she had done long hikes before, she'd never been to this altitude at 5100m - she loved the experience and Chhiri again took great care with all of us.

Thank you does not quite cover it!!!

Amanda was incredibly helpful, both online prior to booking in answering a myriad of questions and once in Kathmandu, meeting with us both before and after the hike. She made sure the trip was seamless from start to end and was very friendly and knowledgeable.

In wanting to take my 10yr old daughter on such a long hike and to 5100m, Amanda was very careful in giving advise and ensuring that we had a senior guide who had experience with children. This proved to be possibly the making of the hike with Chhiri being an excellent guide -and the envy of other hikers!

Thank you very much to Amanda for giving us such special memories. We would love to be back in Nepal one day!!

Amanda Delecca, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hey Anna, thanks so much for your lovely review! It was such a pleasure organising your trip - 3 generations of incredible women who are genuine and humble adventurers.

Thanks again, it was my pleasure and honour xx

I know you can't give a detailed breakdown of the price, but it would have been nice to know a bit more about how the price per person was generated in an overall sense. Like our accommodation total, our food total, the guide and porter's accommodation/food/salary total, and any fees.

Mads Mathiasen, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Erin, thanks for your positive feedback. In the case of you short budget trek, transport and the guide and porter (salary, food, insurance, accommodation) and your accommodation are the things that add up. Of course your food also make up a fair component. Thanks for traveling with us and we hope to see you back in Nepal some day. Mads

Pokhara short trek, Nepal

Traveler: Gill M. - Local specialist: Amanda Delecca

We appreciated the open communication and prompt replies to all our questions. Amanda very quickly gauged our interests and capabilities and planned a trip for us accordingly.

Amanda was a gem. Unfortunately I requiredhospitalisation early on in the trip. Amanda was so supportive and understanding. She guided us through the process and after resting she quickly rescheduled our trip so we could maximise our time. This involved organising an alternative trek more suited to our needs at this time. All our drivers, guides and accomodation were top class.

Amanda Delecca, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hey Gill,

We're so glad that we were able to adjust your itinerary after you were sick and that your trip wasn't cut short, as we thought it might be. Even in adverse circumstances both you and Jim were such a pleasure to deal with and I was so happy to meet up with you at the end of your trip and hear that you did get to enjoy Nepal in the end and that you were able to experience the 'something special' that Kathmandu and Nepal has.

Thanks for being fantastic guests!!

Amanda :)

It was pretty much perfect. One day we drove a long way to some hot springs, probably ended up being and extra 2 hrs to find they didn't open untill 4pm. Should've checked but worth adding to the info sheet. Didn't mind too much though.

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Anna, I'm glad that your trip was (mostly) perfect, thank you for your note about the hot springs, we will make sure to inform future travelers of this so that they can plan their day accordingly.

I was very impressed with the working of the website, it seemed very efficient and beautifully designed. In fact it was the design that first persuaded me to look further.

I would say it was really great. Ngima was extremely professional and gave me the impression that he was understanding all my demands. The trip was organised very well and I felt in capable hands the whole way. This was especially important as I had some medical issues that needed understanding in terms of trekking.
I think on these points you need something between Perfect and Good.

Dear Elaine,

First and foremost, thank you very much for travelling with us and I am very glad and happy to know that you are very satisfied with our services which think is our great achievement. We hope to welcome you soon again for your next visit to Nepal and would love to avail our services once again for you and make your trip worth memorable.

Pokara was a great respite from the dust of the Kathmandu valley, and we enjoyed particularly the Gurkha museum and the Tibetan monastery on the outskirts. The day back in Kathmandu was great both the Darbar monuments and especially the bazaar area.

Mads is amazing, attention to every detail, incredible fast planning ahead of time, and great connections to people on the ground: Amanda, Rajeev, and Dipesh.

I can not say enough positive things about our experience, especially with Ngima. Planning a trip for a family of four including a trek in the highest mountains in the world is no small task. KimKim and especially Nigima made it manageable and enjoyable. Five stars!

I cannot say enough positive things about Ngima Dorji Sherpa!!!! His professionalism, responsiveness and courtesy are top notch! From the moment we were connected with him virtually while we were planning our trip to our first meeting in Kathmandu to our final encounter at the airport, we knew he was holding our trip that included a two week trek with care and professionalism. Also, through the course of our experience, we learned how important he is to the development of his home community in the Solu-Khumu region - he gives back incredibly by helping build schools and a monastery - it was an honor to support his business. Another thing I would like to note is how comfortable we felt with him - it was easy to communicate and connect on both a professional and friendly level. I hope to go back to Nepal - I would absolutely hire Ngima and his company and our fabulous guides Lahkpa and Tashi and our dedicated, strong and trustworthy porters Nima and Tara again in a heartbeat.

Thank you very much for your wonderful review and it was our great pleasure to serve such a nice family like yours for your trek visit in Nepal. It's our great achievement that your family is preety satisfied from our services and we hope to serve you again in near future.

Self drive tour for family with young children, Iceland - Apr 7 - Apr 17, 2017

Traveler: Abigail A. - Local specialist: Chris McCarty

It was helpful to have someone with knowledge of the area to help us book rooms. However, the itinerary seemed somewhat generic rather than customized. For example, there were several recommendations on the itinerary that were not open during the winter season. Also, because it was winter and the roads were not always in the best condition, it would have been nice if the itinerary was a little more specific with directions (i.e. what roads were before/after) rather than just saying look for the signs. We relied a lot more on a Rough Guide and a detailed map than I had expected to.

Week of relaxation and adventure, Colombia - Apr 8 - Apr 16, 2017

Traveler: Brian S. - Local specialist: Nathalie Clavel

It was fantastic and planned very well. We had a great time. My only comment would be more detail in the overall itinerary so we don't have to bounce around kimkim trying to find different pieces of information about each activity.

Nathalie Clavel, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hello Brian,

Thank you very much for your comments! We will indeed include the information you have been missing in the travel documents for next travelers.
I am glad you had a great time! Feel free to come back anytime.

Tour of bogota, tayrona park, bogota, Colombia - Apr 17 - Apr 20, 2017

Traveler: Nick J. - Local specialist: Nathalie Clavel

The hotel we stayed at in Santa Marta was not great. The lack of air conditioning was a big problem. Also our guide for the hike in Tayrona did not speak much English and was therefore not very helpful. Other than that, the trip was great!

Nathalie Clavel, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hello Nick,

Thank you for your comments. I did tell you during the organization that changing hotel for a cheaper one in Santa Marta would probably not please you in the end. I'll insist more for next clients!
Thank you for your comments that help us to keep improving our services!

I am glad you enjoyed Colombia, come back to visit whenever you want!

Nature, culture, unique experiences, less crowd, Iceland - Apr 5 - Apr 18, 2017

Traveler: Joan L. - Local specialist: Chris McCarty

The whole trip was planned half-way easier knowing what to do and what shall be expected in Iceland with assistance of kimkim's service.

Chris was able to adjust / alter the itinerary according to our preferences and requests and it turned out to be a successful journey. Most of the time we stayed 2 night straight at the same hotel and as a result it allowed us to revisit places and savor the dramatic landscapes we were not able to enjoy at the first day due to extreme weather condition in this April.

Cultural tour with festivals (bisket & sindure jatra), Nepal - Apr 10 - Apr 18, 2017

Traveler: Susann W. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

We were so pleased with how quickly you were able to put together the kind of itinerary and services to both meet our requests and to make the trip work smoothly.

I do shy away from using 'perfect' loosely but must say it was as close to perfect as things usually come.

Mads Mathiasen, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thanks Susann, it was a pleasure to put this together for you and Michael and I am glad you liked it. I know Rajeev really enjoyed traveling with you and showing you around. We all hope to see you again in Nepal sometime soon. Thanks, Mads.

Our trip went very smoothly and was a wonderful experience. We didn't wind up doing the activities on the days of our trip planned, but all of them were covered and it fit very nicely based on weather, etc...

Catia was very prompt in responding to any questions that we had during our trip.

Cátia Chaves, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Carol.

We tend change the order of the activities depending on the weather conditions because most of the tours are outdoor so it's better to have them when the weather is nicer. I am happy to know that you had a wonderful experience at our island.

Thank you for your feedback.

Overall, the trip was very good. There could have been a lot more communication about the daily itinerary and I wish that there had been more optionality provided for what was done each day. Also, I feel like many of the days ended the activities earlier than expected without any option to visit more sites or deviate from the itinerary. Overall, while the tour was great, I was expecting more for the money that I paid (even despite the fact that I realize I paid a premium for being a solo traveler).

Andy was phenomenal in some respects, especially when I was presented with a health issue. But again, some of my comments about the optionality of the trip and the communication could have applied. I think we could have come up with a more tailed trip for me if I had been provided more options and there had been more communication.

Traveler: Sara K. - Local specialist: Chris McCarty

The trip was amazing. Loved the tips on stops and restaurants. Really happy with most of the accommodations. Will definitely be using Kimkim in the future

Only complaint was we weren't the happiest with the car rental place, didn't seem the reputable. Also the accommodations at the centric house, while centrally located, were very dirty for the price paid. Other than that, very happy.

Loved working with Chris, however would like an heads up when credit card would be charged so we could make sure the money was in the account.

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Sara, thank you for your review and great photos! Looks like the two of you had a nice time. I'm glad that you enjoyed Iceland.

Thank you for your feedback on the car rental place, we are looking into this a bit more to decide if this is the right partner to work with for future travelers.

Best,

In the end, someone joined, which made the trip 500% better than it would have been, as there were not the opportunities to talk to other trekkers at the teahouses that I imagined there would be. The other one is around timeliness - the actual details (pickup time and where etc) I didn't receive until I was en route to Nepal - a bit nerve wracking as I wasn't sure what kind of internet access I would have. Might seem silly from the point of view of someone living in Kathmandu, but I like to have everything locked in as much as in advance as possible. But these are just very minor points to consider, especially for first time trekkers, and more than made up for by the quality of the trip itself.

Aside from previous comments = always helpful, always as quick as possible in the replies, met with me prior to both trips (trek and half day trip) .

We highly recommend Amanda and team. We had a fantastic trip and everything was organised seamlessly

Amanda and team were always there looking after us. We really didn't need to worry about a thing. Our trekking guide was the envy of the rest of the group's we met on the trek so we felt very well looked after and in capable and safe hands.
We highly recommend a helicopter to get you to the where the best trekking starts if your budget allows.
Amanda and her team went above and beyond to make our trip to Nepal unforgettable.

Traveler: Michael S. - Local specialist: Nathalie Clavel

It was weird that I just got one travel agent, and that there was no choice at all -- an agent that ended up being good, if not perfect. I felt there was no particular reason I got this agent as opposed to any other--why this person? What was so great about them? What was special about who they were, or why I they were the person who should plan my trip?

Communication could have been better. We went 3 days without hearing anything, and then found out that our itinerary needed changes. Trip was still amazing, but going through that was nerve racking.

Nathalie Clavel, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your comments. I am glad you had a great trip.

The organization was really right before departure and there was availibilities issues in Cartagena, this is why I might have found better to close everything before saying anything that would have changed later on, as rooms were getting booked really quick.

I hope you keep great memories of Colombia!

Good hike either way but again some misinformation given the time of year. Our accommodation was generally excellent and very comfortable for our family of four. The OK hotel was good but the "pull out couch" was not long enough even for me to sleep on (I'm 5 foot 5 inches) let alone two 17 year old boys. Just good to know if you are putting a family in there it would work for two young kids.

We are in good shape, but this was a daunting scramble though and over boulders and with a 300-meter plus gain in altitude in a tropical jungle.
We were disappointed in the Casa Lina Hotel in Palominos and in the Casa Amarilla Hotel in Mompox. The language barrier was high in both locations, the beds were uncomfortable and the staff were correct but not friendly.

We seemed to have difficulty understanding each other. When we needed help with a billing dispute (in Mompox) and in adjusting our itinerary (in Palominos), she was not readily available.
As in other aspects of the trip, we were to blame for some of this. We should have pursued more subjects before we left, regarding temperatures, hiking difficulties, sunscreen, etc. I was also disappointed when we were asked for full payment earlier than I expected.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for your comments.
In the first program I have sent to you I did not included the hike to the Pueblito because it is a little hard. After that, I remember talking with you over the phone about the trek in the Tayrona Park and telling you that it would be difficult but you told me that it would be ok and you seemed to really want to go to Pueblito so I included it in the program. I will warn more carefully the next travelers about this hike. I am sorry you had trouble that day.

I tried to call you several time during the trip to make sure everything was going ok, I have not been aware about the bill in Mompox, I will check with you what happened.
There was a little misunderstanding about the change for the trek because I thought you didn´t want to spend the night overthere and come back to Santa Marta directly, but once things were clear, I believe I made the necessary calls so it would be arranged quickly, the trek begenning the very next day.

I am surprised about the payment. You can pay for a downpayment and then pay the full amount one month before departure. The option didn´t appear when you paid? you should have told me. I thought you paid the total amount directly because you wanted to.
I am also surprised about the hotels in Palomino and Mompox, it is the first time we hear that.

I hope you had a great time in Colombia in spite of all and that you keep wonderful memories and discovered many things!

I keep at your entire disposal would you need anything in the future,
Best regards,

Nathalie

I can't say enough what a pleasure it was working with these folks for our trip into the Amazon for our honeymoon. From the time I made the initial contact with KimKim until the end of our adventure, we felt like we were the only concern they had. We worked with Nathalie on the front end for lining the trip up and making sure we had everything we needed. She was very thorough and polite, and kept in excellent contact with me prior to the trip.
Once we arrived at the airport in Leticia we waited a few minutes for our ride to show up and then were taken straight down to the office to get ready for our 4 day trek into the Amazon jungle! Thats where we met with our guide Ramiro, were promptly issued some rubber muck boots, and went over some necessities for our trip. We didn't bring enough mosquito repellent or rain ponchos, so we made a quick stop at the store to grab some and then had a nice lunch with our guide at a restaurant there in town. Once we were ready to roll, we hopped in a cab and were driven about 20 minutes outta town, where we got out and the 3 of us began walking through the jungle. Immediately I was feeling grateful that they gave us the rubber boots and told us to grab more Deet!! We eventually started fondly calling the bug repellent "Amazonian Cologne". It worked great though and really as long as we kept some on, the mosquitoes really didn't bother us that much.
We walked for maybe a couple hours into the jungle to a Maloka and met with some of the native people there working on the plantation. Our guide Ramiro knew the people well and immediately introduced us and explained what they were working on. We had some supper and just hung out for a little bit until it got dark. Then we went for a hike into the jungle to look at the nocturnal wildlife, which was really awesome to see everything!! We saw all kinds of cool stuff! That night we met with the Shaman and shared his Mumbai. We had a good talk with him and learned a bit about their culture, which we found very interesting!
The next day we woke up & had breakfast & then hiked for several hours through the jungle to a remote Lodge where we showered & relaxed for awhile. After supper we hiked for about 15 minutes to a huge tree where we repelled UP about 100 feet to a big platform just above the jungle canopy. Ramiro was given instructions by the company to leave us alone in the tree house for a few hours, since it was our honeymoon, so he set us up with some rose petals, grapes & chocolates, and a bottle of champagne, and then they went back to the lodge for a few hours so we could have some privacy ;) The next morning we woke up to see the sun rise over the jungle, zip lined out of that tree into another tree platform, and repelled down to the ground. What an experience! We hiked for a couple hours to the river and boarded some kayaks and took off paddling. It was high water season so the river was swollen up and into the jungle so we had a lot to look at from the kayaks. We paddled a couple hours and finally made it across a big lake to another Lodge where we ate lunch and met our boat captain. The last leg of our journey was in a small boat where we got to see a bunch more wildlife, including sloths, toucans, monkeys, pink dolphins, grey dolphins, green parrots, and piranhas! We fished for and caught piranhas and took them back to the lodge where they cooked them for us! They were great! We drank some cachacas with the folks who run the lodge and then went off to bed. The next day we boarded the boat again and made our way back to Leticia to conclude our trip.
All in all I would say our Amazon jungle experience was truly amazing! The people that we met were all so nice, courteous, and respectful, and you could tell they sincerely appreciated our business. We feel that we made lifelong friends with our guide Ramiro, and hope to stay in contact with him through Facebook. He had everything lined out perfectly and even cooked most of the food we ate on the trip! What seemed like an amazing trip to us was literally just another day to him. He has done hundreds if not thousands of those trips and we felt safe the entire time.
I would highly recommend this company for your trip into the Amazon. They did a great job for us and was worth every dollar we spent on it!!! A+

My itinerary was great overall. Well paced, stopped at many terrific highlights and quite achievable.
It did however feel like it was written quite generically - that is to say, just a copy paste job rather than something tailored. As an example, one restaurant in Hellnar which was recommended (and pretty much the only one for miles) was closed for the winter. This is confirmed with a search on Google, it's not a one off. It did however feel like it was written quite generically - that is to say, just a copy paste job rather than something tailored. As an example, one restaurant in Hellnar which was recommended (and pretty much the only one for miles) was closed for the winter. This is confirmed with a search on Google, it's not a one off. I would expect this recommendation to be removed for winter trips. Mentions of daily drive distances were a bit off - example, the second last day I had to drive from Skaftafell to Reykjavik (320km, 4hr), not Vik to Reykjavik (180km, 2hr20min) as mentioned in the itinerary. My guess is that Chris used a base itinerary to build mine which is fine, but some of the smaller details were not altered to conform to mine.

My main gripe though is the choice of car hire. I should have looked more closely before agreeing, but I'm generally wary about dodgy operators other than the core Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty. While it might be cheap initially, they do the hard sell at the desk on added insurances, in this case 30 Euro a day (for things like gravel protection, sand protection, reduced excess etc), which still has exclusions. I asked Chris about insurances, he said it included liability and collision and asked if I wanted any additional. Turns out that cover doesn't cover much, and it still includes an approx. $2200AUD excess. Further - the company would put a hold on my card for $2200AUD for going on 10 days after the rental has ended. This is really unsettling and not to mention an inconvenience.

While this isn't strictly Kimkim/Chris's fault, the selection of the car hire company is really important. The discussions online about the chosen car hire company are really worrying.

Chris was very responsive and answered all of my questions promptly.

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Matthew, I'm glad that overall you had a good experience.

Regarding the car hire, thank you for sharing your experience, we have stopped using these services for our other travelers, as we want the process to be as transparent as possible.

5 day south coast adventure in march, Iceland - Feb 27 - Mar 3, 2017

Our trip to Iceland couldn't have been more perfect. Our trip to Iceland couldn't have been more perfect. To start with, it is a beautiful country and we were very fortunate to have had perfectly clear weather the entire 5 days we were there in February/March, after what we had been told was a very rainy winter. 18 inches of snow fell just before we arrived, and the Northern lights were out every night, making it a winter wonderland. That part was sheer luck, but on top of that, the trip was as smooth as we could have hoped. Our driver was waiting at the airport and took us right to our hotel which we had booked the previous night because of our very early morning arrival. The first day in Reykavik we planned on our own. The next 4 days were planned by the kimkim operator. We had private tours of the Golden Circle and the south coast, and a group tour to the Thorsmark wilderness area. On the final day we took a quick tour of the Reykjanes peninsula and then a stop at the Blue Lagoon before heading to the airport. We had 2 guides for those 4 days, and both were very friendly and knowledgeable and made everything run so smoothly that we didn't have to worry about a thing. We felt very lucky that our guide for the south coast tour had grown up in the area, and he took us to see places where his family had lived and told us the stories behind them. Although we did some of the usual tourist things, we loved also going to a few places where we didn't see another person. The hike up the mountain where his great-great grandfather had a farm was spectacular. We appreciated his flexibility in changing the plan on the last day when we were tired and wanted to get back to the hotel a little bit earlier than planned.

The only thing I would have changed about our trip was the trip to the Blue Lagoon, but that is in hindsight. We had heard a lot about it and felt like we had to go see what it was all about, but it was too crowded and too touristy for our tastes. The hot lagoon was a unique experience, but if I had to do it over again I would try one of the natural springs out in the countryside instead, and save a lot of money too!

As far as the planning process, I have tried several different online travel planning services, and I really like the way kimkim uses a back and forth conversation to plan the details. It's much quicker than other services that start with a formal proposal, which then has to be laboriously modified if you want changes. For our Iceland trip, the local operator started with a general plan, then narrowed down the details, and then presented a completed proposal. Most of my communication was with the local tour operator, but on 2 occasions when there was a breakdown in communication the Kimkim team stepped in and sorted it out quickly. I hope kimkim adds more locations to their offerings. I will use it again.

A couple of very small details that could have been improved - our trip to Thorsmark was 1-1/2 hours longer than described. It seemed as if our guide added on some things at the end to give us our money's worth, but we were tired and would have been happy to end on time. Part of the reason we were so tired was because on our hike the guide raced ahead of the group instead of going at our pace. We weren't all 20-somethings who hike glaciers in our spare time, and it isn't much fun hiking if you are worried about keeping up! A final small detail - water in the jeep would have been nice. But these were small things. Overall the trip was amazing.

Myanmar 25th anniversary trip, Myanmar - Feb 21 - Mar 3, 2017

Traveler: Cathy A. - Local specialist: Wai Lin Tun

Actually, very good except for day in Pandaya which we found disappointing at best. The drive was too long for relatively little to see or do. Additionally the Pindaya Inle Inn was terribly shoddy. The bed and pillows were so hard we ached the following day. The room was dark and not vey clean, and the wooden floor uneven posing a trip hazard. This is not a 4 star room...a 2 in our view.

The time lag with responses was a bit trying at times, but overall very good.

Wai Lin Tun, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Cathy, thank a lot for the review and the feedback on your recent trip to Myanmar through our services.

It's sad to hear that the accommodation in Pindaya didn't meet your expectation. However, due to the number of extremely limited accommodation options in this small town, Pindaya Inle Inn hotel was the best option available for your stay there. I will of course pass your comments to our team and the hotel as well so that we could improve the services better in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you again to our country in the future.
Best Regards,
Wai Lin

Dawa proved to be an excellent guide. He was courteous and knowledgeable. Also, Dawa was very patient with me, as uphill riding is not my strong point. The next morning, our first ride was through parts of Kathmandu and up to the Shivapuri National park. I was able to see parts of the Nepalese culture that most tourists don't see. The ride in Shivapuri was fantastic, and I actually saw some monkeys among the trees. That night we stayed in the Shivapuri retreat where we had a nice meal of Dal Bhat with tea.

The next morning, we rode back into the Shivapuri forest, and hit some awesome mountain biking trails, making our way to Bodinath. We spent time at the Stupa until the car came and picked us up to catch our flight to Pokarrah. On the following day, we flew from Pokarrah to Jomsom for the center piece of the trip...Mountain Biking the Lower Mustang region. Once we got to Jomsom, we rode our bikes up the Kali Gandaki river to the village of Kagbeni. We stayed in a tea house in Kagbeni for 2 nights and for two days rode bikes on through some amazing high desert terrain.

After the stay in Kagbeni, we turned our bikes down the river course to back to Jomsom. One night in Jomsom, and then back on our bikes to Kalopani. Riding down the river course took us through several small villages that reflect the real Nepal. Truly a great experience. After leaving Kalopani, there was one more big ride to a point some 25 km down stream where we were met by a Jeep to take us back to Pokarrah.

Through this entire trip, everything was well planned out and prepared. The hotels, the flights, the ground transportation, nothing was overlooked. I was well taken care of. My guides, Dawa and Tendu were superb, and basically just good people to be around. The coordination and professionalism of all of the guys who handled my trip made it a great success. I will be going back to Nepal, and I will use this crew again. Many thanks to Dawa, Tendu, Raj, and Mads!!

Thanks David, it was a pleasure to show you some of the trails Nepal have to offer. Do get in touch when you want to come and see some more. Cheers, Mads.

Balthali village trek , Nepal - Feb 15 - Feb 19, 2017

Traveler: Julia T. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

The trip was well planned! Only thing is i wished that the porter and guide where treated more as guests than employees of the hotel. In our night at dhulikhel, the employees said that our guide & porter could only eat when they ate. While we had hot shower and luxuriously a heater, our guide and porter only had cold water. The disparity was not nice to witness

Mads was patient in answering my questions, proactive, had suggestions to my problems.

Mads Mathiasen, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Julia, thanks for your kind words and for traveling with us. I appreciate your concern for our crew, I have spoken to Suman and he said the Dal Bhat he ended up getting with the staff was very good but we will speak to the hotel and make sure the guide and porter do have the option to join you the traveler at meal times. Thanks again for traveling with us and hopefully we will see you again in Nepal.

Best of the kathmandu valley in 2 days, Nepal - Feb 15 - Feb 17, 2017

Traveler: Shrikrishna D. - Local specialist: Raj Gyawali

It was a last minute thought about trip, however the tour got planned by Raj of Social tour through kimkim so well that it gave feel of well planned one. The tailor made trip of four day was planned perfectly with A/C car , excellent guide Mr Sushil and versatile driver Suman. It was extremely pocket friendly despite mountain view flight thrown in the package by Raj. Exposure to genuine singing bowls was a mesmerising experience among other events.

Raj Gyawali, local specialist, responded to this review:

Deshpande, thanks for taking the time to make this review. Truly means a lot that it met your expectations and looks like from the sound of it, we went a bit beyond as well. Will definitely transfer your appreciation to Sushil and Suman. Both are excellent assets and truly valued.

Hope to see you in our neck of the woods again at some point!
