Traveler: jo p. - Local specialist: Wai Lin Tun

Hi Alex and wai Lin. We are currently in Inle lake winding up our trip. We want to thank you for the most amazing experiences. All guides and drivers have been overwhelmingly fabulous with their knowledge and ability to accommodate our requests when we have deviated from plan. This trip has exceeded our expectations. We would not hesitate in recommending your services. Jo and Deb

Three passes trek , Nepal - Apr 3 - Apr 21, 2017

Traveler: Christian W. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

I made a very good experience with kimkim.com. All my contacts were very friendly and helpful. I specially liked the quick and uncomplicated way to book a trip.

Mads answered all my questions and gave me always a good advice. He motivated me to go for the longer trek. I am very happy that I listened to him. I had a great time and made one of my best treks ever!

Classic jordan, Jordan - Apr 13 - Apr 19, 2017

Traveler: A S. - Local specialist: Carina Sunna

Service was great, but the final information for arrival should have been sent through a couple of days earlier instead of me having to prompt the tour provider to send this through.

Carina Sunna, local specialist, responded to this review:

Dear Aditi,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your valuable feedback.

Your feedback is important to us. I do apologies for the delay in sending you the final contact details. We normally do send them much earlier, and yes the final information for the arrival should have been send earlier. I apologies, I overlooked to send them to you. My sincere apologies. We will work on our internal processes so this wont happen again.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We will use your feedback for future improvement.

Kindest regards,
Carina.

Khopra danda trek, Nepal - Apr 13 - Apr 21, 2017

Traveler: Fleur K. - Local specialist: Amanda Delecca

The only thing that would have made this better was that would have liked to have a trekked a little longer most days, but we realize that the trip has to account for: 1. lower fitness levels, and 2. altitude.

Ghandruk trek - scenic 3-4 day trek through the annapurna foothills, Nepal - Apr 26 - Apr 29, 2017

Traveler: Peter A. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

I can't say enough about Himalaya Trails. A custom trek to fit our short time. Great guide and porter, who were attentive, accommodating, helpful and friendly. And when our flight from Pokhara was cancelled because of weather, Himalaya Trails went above and beyond with quick on-the-ball travel rearrangements to make sure we made our flight home from Kathmandu the next day. A big thanks to them!

You guys provided a great itinerary, but I think it also would have been nice to know some other details beforehand. i.e., the walk down to rio verde is rigid and pretty long, wear good shoes. There are no showers or sinks at the camp site. Bring plenty of water, etc.

I put in the passport for that one person from our group was a vegetarian and there was no vegetarian dinner option. :(

For future groups, I would recommend providing a luggage requirement. We were told in the van on the way to the river that there would be limited space in the dry bags. It would have been nice to know ahead of time so we could have packed minimally instead of having to re-pack bags on the side of the road and leave things in the van.

Nar and phu trek, Nepal - Apr 2 - Apr 11, 2017

Traveler: Becky T. - Local specialist: Amanda Delecca

Our guide was wonderful and Amanda was very responsive. The trek was a whole lot harder than we expected, and we didn't realize how difficult it would be with the altitude. We were glad to have chosen a trek a little off the beaten track, and had a memorable experience.

Nepal trip, Nepal - Apr 10 - Apr 15, 2017

Traveler: Elaine B. - Local specialist: Ngima Dorji Sherpa

I was very impressed with the working of the website, it seemed very efficient and beautifully designed. In fact it was the design that first persuaded me to look further.

I would say it was really great. Ngima was extremely professional and gave me the impression that he was understanding all my demands. The trip was organised very well and I felt in capable hands the whole way. This was especially important as I had some medical issues that needed understanding in terms of trekking.
I think on these points you need something between Perfect and Good.

Ngima Dorji Sherpa, local specialist, responded to this review:

Dear Elaine,

First and foremost, thank you very much for travelling with us and I am very glad and happy to know that you are very satisfied with our services which think is our great achievement. Thank you very much for your kind appreciations and finding our service worth it. We hope to welcome you soon again for your next visit to Nepal and would love to avail our services once again for you and make your trip worth memorable.

Please visit again.

Kym and joris trip to nepal, Nepal - Apr 7 - Apr 22, 2017

Traveler: Kym d. - Local specialist: Raj Gyawali

Raj planned a great trip for us. He took our interests & priorities into account really well.

In Pokhara, the local restaurant we visited for lunch was not really nice. Also it was a shame that the manager of the permaculture coffee farm we visited wasn't home when we went there So we didn't gain much insight into the process.

Raj Gyawali, local specialist, responded to this review:

Kym and Joris, thanks for the feedback. Malika reports that the local restaurant you were taken too had unfortunately mixed up the orders and brought you the wrong food. Apologies there. Sometimes in Nepal, local restaurants are a bit complacent that way.

Suriya the Farmer is a bit of a celebrity and typically in Nepal, things never happened too planned, as you might have noticed, and this is what happened up there. While Malika had informed him previously about your trip, he got called to a water supply meeting and was not available when you went up there. Unfortunately no one can explain it better than him about the area, and with the subject matter specialist not here, I am sorry this dampened the experience at the permaculture farm a bit.

Thanks for appreciating our understanding of your priorities and interests in developing your trip. This is something we really try hard to do, and when that happens its a real joy!

Petra visit, Jordan - Apr 2 - Apr 5, 2017

Traveler: Lloyd S. - Local specialist: Matt Loveland

The guide that showed up was not the guide we arranged for. Our visit to Jaresh was not in our original schedule and we didn't talk about it.

As I said, Matt did not appear. No explanation was given

10 day nepal trip, Nepal - Apr 13 - Apr 22, 2017

Traveler: Ruth S. - Local specialist: Raj Gyawali

I have never really been much of a "tour" traveler. I can't thank Raj's team at Social Tours for all the high level of detail planning and caliber of guides, drivers and information by his group. Amazing!

Responsive, well planned, all of Raj's staff were beyond excellent and professional. We now consider them friends.

Raj Gyawali, local specialist, responded to this review:

Ruth, read this review and the one you posted on the conversation... Am so happy! This is what we aim for, and while we cannot always reach this exceeding of expectations, when we do, and we get these reviews, its the pat on the back that we work for. Thank you, and cannot wait to see you again in Nepal!

The two initial days walking around with Rajeev in Patan, his home town, were truly wonderful and a great introduction to the urban fabric of the Kathmandu Valley. The day back in Kathmandu was great both the Darbar monuments and especially the bazaar area.

Mads is amazing, attention to every detail, incredible fast planning ahead of time, and great connections to people on the ground: Amanda, Rajeev, and Dipesh.

Ngima Dorji Sherpa, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thank you for rating our services 5 stars. We do provide luxury trek services with accommodation on luxury lodges in Everest region too. But we are sorry that we did not talk about luxury options earlier. However, we will take care of your interest and plan accordingly during your next visit to Nepal.

Hope to welcome you soon again.

From the moment we inquired with KimKim about a trek in Nepal and then ultimately connected with our local organizer, Ngima Dorji Sherpa with Nepal Mountain Trails in Nepal, we were very impressed with the responsiveness, organization and professionalism of our communications. I can not say enough positive things about our experience, especially with Ngima. Planning a trip for a family of four including a trek in the highest mountains in the world is no small task. KimKim and especially Nigima made it manageable and enjoyable. Five stars!

I cannot say enough positive things about Ngima Dorji Sherpa!!!! His professionalism, responsiveness and courtesy are top notch! From the moment we were connected with him virtually while we were planning our trip to our first meeting in Kathmandu to our final encounter at the airport, we knew he was holding our trip that included a two week trek with care and professionalism. Also, through the course of our experience, we learned how important he is to the development of his home community in the Solu-Khumu region - he gives back incredibly by helping build schools and a monastery - it was an honor to support his business. Another thing I would like to note is how comfortable we felt with him - it was easy to communicate and connect on both a professional and friendly level. I hope to go back to Nepal - I would absolutely hire Ngima and his company and our fabulous guides Lahkpa and Tashi and our dedicated, strong and trustworthy porters Nima and Tara again in a heartbeat.

Ngima Dorji Sherpa, local specialist, responded to this review:

Dear Dorine and family,

Thank you very much for your wonderful review and it was our great pleasure to serve such a nice family like yours for your trek visit in Nepal. It's our great achievement that your family is preety satisfied from our services and we hope to serve you again in near future.

Best wishes,

Self drive tour for family with young children, Iceland - Apr 7 - Apr 17, 2017

Traveler: Abigail A. - Local specialist: Chris McCarty

It was helpful to have someone with knowledge of the area to help us book rooms. However, the itinerary seemed somewhat generic rather than customized. For example, there were several recommendations on the itinerary that were not open during the winter season. Also, because it was winter and the roads were not always in the best condition, it would have been nice if the itinerary was a little more specific with directions (i.e. what roads were before/after) rather than just saying look for the signs. We relied a lot more on a Rough Guide and a detailed map than I had expected to.

Week of relaxation and adventure, Colombia - Apr 8 - Apr 16, 2017

Traveler: Brian S. - Local specialist: Nathalie Clavel

It was fantastic and planned very well. We had a great time. My only comment would be more detail in the overall itinerary so we don't have to bounce around kimkim trying to find different pieces of information about each activity.

Nathalie Clavel, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hello Brian,

Thank you very much for your comments! We will indeed include the information you have been missing in the travel documents for next travelers.
I am glad you had a great time! Feel free to come back anytime.

Tour of bogota, tayrona park, bogota, Colombia - Apr 17 - Apr 20, 2017

Traveler: Nick J. - Local specialist: Nathalie Clavel

The hotel we stayed at in Santa Marta was not great. The lack of air conditioning was a big problem. Also our guide for the hike in Tayrona did not speak much English and was therefore not very helpful. Other than that, the trip was great!

Nathalie Clavel, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hello Nick,

Thank you for your comments. I did tell you during the organization that changing hotel for a cheaper one in Santa Marta would probably not please you in the end. I'll insist more for next clients!
Thank you for your comments that help us to keep improving our services!

I am glad you enjoyed Colombia, come back to visit whenever you want!

Cultural tour with festivals (bisket & sindure jatra), Nepal - Apr 10 - Apr 18, 2017

Traveler: Susann W. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

We were so pleased with how quickly you were able to put together the kind of itinerary and services to both meet our requests and to make the trip work smoothly.

I do shy away from using 'perfect' loosely but must say it was as close to perfect as things usually come.

Mads Mathiasen, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thanks Susann, it was a pleasure to put this together for you and Michael and I am glad you liked it. I know Rajeev really enjoyed traveling with you and showing you around. We all hope to see you again in Nepal sometime soon. Thanks, Mads.

Hiking vacation for 2, the Azores - Apr 9 - Apr 14, 2017

Traveler: Carol R. - Local specialist: Cátia Chaves

Our trip went very smoothly and was a wonderful experience. We didn't wind up doing the activities on the days of our trip planned, but all of them were covered and it fit very nicely based on weather, etc...

Catia was very prompt in responding to any questions that we had during our trip.

Cátia Chaves, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Carol.

We tend change the order of the activities depending on the weather conditions because most of the tours are outdoor so it's better to have them when the weather is nicer. I am happy to know that you had a wonderful experience at our island.

Thank you for your feedback.

Wai Lin was great with organising my trip. Always very prompt with replies and planned a trip that suited me perfectly.

Our guide Dawa Sherpa was tremendous, can't imagine the trip without him. He speaks great english, was very friendly and knowledgable, and was an excellent manager of our expectations. He also helped out with photos / videos for the trip which was an excellent value add. I genuinely would give him the highest rating possible and would recommend him to anyone else in an instant. He made the trip for us!

Mads provided timely responses to all of our questions and was extremely helpful. Overall his customer service was excellent.

Dear Stephanie, thank you for taking the time to give us this great feedback, I will make sure to pass on your praise to Dawa he deserves every little bit of it and I am really happy you enjoyed his company! Thank you for traveling with us! Mads

Also, I feel like many of the days ended the activities earlier than expected without any option to visit more sites or deviate from the itinerary. Overall, while the tour was great, I was expecting more for the money that I paid (even despite the fact that I realize I paid a premium for being a solo traveler).

Andy was phenomenal in some respects, especially when I was presented with a health issue. But again, some of my comments about the optionality of the trip and the communication could have applied. I think we could have come up with a more tailed trip for me if I had been provided more options and there had been more communication.

Honeymoon adventure, Iceland - Mar 27 - Apr 5, 2017

Traveler: Sara K. - Local specialist: Chris McCarty

The trip was amazing. Loved the tips on stops and restaurants. Really happy with most of the accommodations. Will definitely be using Kimkim in the future

Only complaint was we weren't the happiest with the car rental place, didn't seem the reputable. Also the accommodations at the centric house, while centrally located, were very dirty for the price paid. Other than that, very happy.

Loved working with Chris, however would like an heads up when credit card would be charged so we could make sure the money was in the account.

Amanda was the best and most helpful especially when things didnt go as planned. Like when the airport was closed 8-)

Hey Marlon, thanks for your review and the pics!! Great to see some of your trip. You really experienced the diversity of Nepal, from Kathmandu to Pokhara to Lumbini, from temples and cultural sites, to the natural beauty of the mountains and villages on your mountain biking excursion. The guides all commented that they had a lot of fun showing you around, we look forward to planning your next trip!

In the end, someone joined, which made the trip 500% better than it would have been, as there were not the opportunities to talk to other trekkers at the teahouses that I imagined there would be. The other one is around timeliness - the actual details (pickup time and where etc) I didn't receive until I was en route to Nepal - a bit nerve wracking as I wasn't sure what kind of internet access I would have. Might seem silly from the point of view of someone living in Kathmandu, but I like to have everything locked in as much as in advance as possible. But these are just very minor points to consider, especially for first time trekkers, and more than made up for by the quality of the trip itself.

Aside from previous comments = always helpful, always as quick as possible in the replies, met with me prior to both trips (trek and half day trip) .

We highly recommend Amanda and team. We had a fantastic trip and everything was organised seamlessly

Amanda and team were always there looking after us. We really didn't need to worry about a thing. Our trekking guide was the envy of the rest of the group's we met on the trek so we felt very well looked after and in capable and safe hands.
We highly recommend a helicopter to get you to the where the best trekking starts if your budget allows.
Amanda and her team went above and beyond to make our trip to Nepal unforgettable.

It was weird that I just got one travel agent, and that there was no choice at all -- an agent that ended up being good, if not perfect. I felt there was no particular reason I got this agent as opposed to any other--why this person? What was so great about them? What was special about who they were, or why I they were the person who should plan my trip?

Communication could have been better. We went 3 days without hearing anything, and then found out that our itinerary needed changes. Trip was still amazing, but going through that was nerve racking.

Good hike either way but again some misinformation given the time of year. Our accommodation was generally excellent and very comfortable for our family of four. The OK hotel was good but the "pull out couch" was not long enough even for me to sleep on (I'm 5 foot 5 inches) let alone two 17 year old boys. Just good to know if you are putting a family in there it would work for two young kids.

We are in good shape, but this was a daunting scramble though and over boulders and with a 300-meter plus gain in altitude in a tropical jungle.
We were disappointed in the Casa Lina Hotel in Palominos and in the Casa Amarilla Hotel in Mompox. The language barrier was high in both locations, the beds were uncomfortable and the staff were correct but not friendly.

We seemed to have difficulty understanding each other. When we needed help with a billing dispute (in Mompox) and in adjusting our itinerary (in Palominos), she was not readily available.
As in other aspects of the trip, we were to blame for some of this. We should have pursued more subjects before we left, regarding temperatures, hiking difficulties, sunscreen, etc. I was also disappointed when we were asked for full payment earlier than I expected.

Nathalie Clavel, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hello Jim,

Thank you for your comments.
In the first program I have sent to you I did not included the hike to the Pueblito because it is a little hard. After that, I remember talking with you over the phone about the trek in the Tayrona Park and telling you that it would be difficult but you told me that it would be ok and you seemed to really want to go to Pueblito so I included it in the program. I will warn more carefully the next travelers about this hike. I am sorry you had trouble that day.

I tried to call you several time during the trip to make sure everything was going ok, I have not been aware about the bill in Mompox, I will check with you what happened.
There was a little misunderstanding about the change for the trek because I thought you didn´t want to spend the night overthere and come back to Santa Marta directly, but once things were clear, I believe I made the necessary calls so it would be arranged quickly, the trek begenning the very next day.

I am surprised about the payment. You can pay for a downpayment and then pay the full amount one month before departure. The option didn´t appear when you paid? you should have told me. I thought you paid the total amount directly because you wanted to.
I am also surprised about the hotels in Palomino and Mompox, it is the first time we hear that.

I hope you had a great time in Colombia in spite of all and that you keep wonderful memories and discovered many things!

I keep at your entire disposal would you need anything in the future,
Best regards,

Nathalie

I can't say enough what a pleasure it was working with these folks for our trip into the Amazon for our honeymoon. From the time I made the initial contact with KimKim until the end of our adventure, we felt like we were the only concern they had. We worked with Nathalie on the front end for lining the trip up and making sure we had everything we needed. She was very thorough and polite, and kept in excellent contact with me prior to the trip.
Once we arrived at the airport in Leticia we waited a few minutes for our ride to show up and then were taken straight down to the office to get ready for our 4 day trek into the Amazon jungle! Thats where we met with our guide Ramiro, were promptly issued some rubber muck boots, and went over some necessities for our trip. We didn't bring enough mosquito repellent or rain ponchos, so we made a quick stop at the store to grab some and then had a nice lunch with our guide at a restaurant there in town. Once we were ready to roll, we hopped in a cab and were driven about 20 minutes outta town, where we got out and the 3 of us began walking through the jungle. Immediately I was feeling grateful that they gave us the rubber boots and told us to grab more Deet!! We eventually started fondly calling the bug repellent "Amazonian Cologne". It worked great though and really as long as we kept some on, the mosquitoes really didn't bother us that much.
We walked for maybe a couple hours into the jungle to a Maloka and met with some of the native people there working on the plantation. Our guide Ramiro knew the people well and immediately introduced us and explained what they were working on. We had some supper and just hung out for a little bit until it got dark. Then we went for a hike into the jungle to look at the nocturnal wildlife, which was really awesome to see everything!! We saw all kinds of cool stuff! That night we met with the Shaman and shared his Mumbai. We had a good talk with him and learned a bit about their culture, which we found very interesting!
The next day we woke up & had breakfast & then hiked for several hours through the jungle to a remote Lodge where we showered & relaxed for awhile. After supper we hiked for about 15 minutes to a huge tree where we repelled UP about 100 feet to a big platform just above the jungle canopy. Ramiro was given instructions by the company to leave us alone in the tree house for a few hours, since it was our honeymoon, so he set us up with some rose petals, grapes & chocolates, and a bottle of champagne, and then they went back to the lodge for a few hours so we could have some privacy ;) The next morning we woke up to see the sun rise over the jungle, zip lined out of that tree into another tree platform, and repelled down to the ground. What an experience! We hiked for a couple hours to the river and boarded some kayaks and took off paddling. It was high water season so the river was swollen up and into the jungle so we had a lot to look at from the kayaks. We paddled a couple hours and finally made it across a big lake to another Lodge where we ate lunch and met our boat captain. The last leg of our journey was in a small boat where we got to see a bunch more wildlife, including sloths, toucans, monkeys, pink dolphins, grey dolphins, green parrots, and piranhas! We fished for and caught piranhas and took them back to the lodge where they cooked them for us! They were great! We drank some cachacas with the folks who run the lodge and then went off to bed. The next day we boarded the boat again and made our way back to Leticia to conclude our trip.
All in all I would say our Amazon jungle experience was truly amazing! The people that we met were all so nice, courteous, and respectful, and you could tell they sincerely appreciated our business. We feel that we made lifelong friends with our guide Ramiro, and hope to stay in contact with him through Facebook. He had everything lined out perfectly and even cooked most of the food we ate on the trip! What seemed like an amazing trip to us was literally just another day to him. He has done hundreds if not thousands of those trips and we felt safe the entire time.
I would highly recommend this company for your trip into the Amazon. They did a great job for us and was worth every dollar we spent on it!!! A+

It did however feel like it was written quite generically - that is to say, just a copy paste job rather than something tailored. As an example, one restaurant in Hellnar which was recommended (and pretty much the only one for miles) was closed for the winter. This is confirmed with a search on Google, it's not a one off. I would expect this recommendation to be removed for winter trips. Mentions of daily drive distances were a bit off - example, the second last day I had to drive from Skaftafell to Reykjavik (320km, 4hr), not Vik to Reykjavik (180km, 2hr20min) as mentioned in the itinerary. My guess is that Chris used a base itinerary to build mine which is fine, but some of the smaller details were not altered to conform to mine.

My main gripe though is the choice of car hire. I should have looked more closely before agreeing, but I'm generally wary about dodgy operators other than the core Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty. While it might be cheap initially, they do the hard sell at the desk on added insurances, in this case 30 Euro a day (for things like gravel protection, sand protection, reduced excess etc), which still has exclusions. I asked Chris about insurances, he said it included liability and collision and asked if I wanted any additional. Turns out that cover doesn't cover much, and it still includes an approx. $2200AUD excess. Further - the company would put a hold on my card for $2200AUD for going on 10 days after the rental has ended. This is really unsettling and not to mention an inconvenience.

While this isn't strictly Kimkim/Chris's fault, the selection of the car hire company is really important. The discussions online about the chosen car hire company are really worrying.

Chris was very responsive and answered all of my questions promptly.

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Matthew, I'm glad that overall you had a good experience.

Regarding the car hire, thank you for sharing your experience, we have stopped using these services for our other travelers, as we want the process to be as transparent as possible.

Our trip to Iceland couldn't have been more perfect. To start with, it is a beautiful country and we were very fortunate to have had perfectly clear weather the entire 5 days we were there in February/March, after what we had been told was a very rainy winter. 18 inches of snow fell just before we arrived, and the Northern lights were out every night, making it a winter wonderland. That part was sheer luck, but on top of that, the trip was as smooth as we could have hoped. Our driver was waiting at the airport and took us right to our hotel which we had booked the previous night because of our very early morning arrival. The first day in Reykavik we planned on our own. The next 4 days were planned by the kimkim operator. We had private tours of the Golden Circle and the south coast, and a group tour to the Thorsmark wilderness area. On the final day we took a quick tour of the Reykjanes peninsula and then a stop at the Blue Lagoon before heading to the airport. We had 2 guides for those 4 days, and both were very friendly and knowledgeable and made everything run so smoothly that we didn't have to worry about a thing. We felt very lucky that our guide for the south coast tour had grown up in the area, and he took us to see places where his family had lived and told us the stories behind them. Although we did some of the usual tourist things, we loved also going to a few places where we didn't see another person. The hike up the mountain where his great-great grandfather had a farm was spectacular. We appreciated his flexibility in changing the plan on the last day when we were tired and wanted to get back to the hotel a little bit earlier than planned.

The only thing I would have changed about our trip was the trip to the Blue Lagoon, but that is in hindsight. We had heard a lot about it and felt like we had to go see what it was all about, but it was too crowded and too touristy for our tastes. The hot lagoon was a unique experience, but if I had to do it over again I would try one of the natural springs out in the countryside instead, and save a lot of money too!

As far as the planning process, I have tried several different online travel planning services, and I really like the way kimkim uses a back and forth conversation to plan the details. It's much quicker than other services that start with a formal proposal, which then has to be laboriously modified if you want changes. For our Iceland trip, the local operator started with a general plan, then narrowed down the details, and then presented a completed proposal. Most of my communication was with the local tour operator, but on 2 occasions when there was a breakdown in communication the Kimkim team stepped in and sorted it out quickly. I hope kimkim adds more locations to their offerings. I will use it again.

A couple of very small details that could have been improved - our trip to Thorsmark was 1-1/2 hours longer than described. It seemed as if our guide added on some things at the end to give us our money's worth, but we were tired and would have been happy to end on time. Part of the reason we were so tired was because on our hike the guide raced ahead of the group instead of going at our pace. We weren't all 20-somethings who hike glaciers in our spare time, and it isn't much fun hiking if you are worried about keeping up! A final small detail - water in the jeep would have been nice. But these were small things. Overall the trip was amazing.

Midgard Adventure Team, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Kristin,

Thank you for this wonderful review.
I know both Helga Lucie and Óli really enjoyed the time with you.
I hope to see you next time you come to Iceland :)

Myanmar 25th anniversary trip, Myanmar - Feb 21 - Mar 3, 2017

Traveler: Cathy A. - Local specialist: Wai Lin Tun

Actually, very good except for day in Pandaya which we found disappointing at best. The drive was too long for relatively little to see or do. Additionally the Pindaya Inle Inn was terribly shoddy. The bed and pillows were so hard we ached the following day. The room was dark and not vey clean, and the wooden floor uneven posing a trip hazard. This is not a 4 star room...a 2 in our view.

The time lag with responses was a bit trying at times, but overall very good.

Wai Lin Tun, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Cathy, thank a lot for the review and the feedback on your recent trip to Myanmar through our services.

It's sad to hear that the accommodation in Pindaya didn't meet your expectation. However, due to the number of extremely limited accommodation options in this small town, Pindaya Inle Inn hotel was the best option available for your stay there. I will of course pass your comments to our team and the hotel as well so that we could improve the services better in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you again to our country in the future.

Dawa proved to be an excellent guide. He was courteous and knowledgeable. Also, Dawa was very patient with me, as uphill riding is not my strong point. The next morning, our first ride was through parts of Kathmandu and up to the Shivapuri National park. I was able to see parts of the Nepalese culture that most tourists don't see. The ride in Shivapuri was fantastic, and I actually saw some monkeys among the trees. That night we stayed in the Shivapuri retreat where we had a nice meal of Dal Bhat with tea.

The next morning, we rode back into the Shivapuri forest, and hit some awesome mountain biking trails, making our way to Bodinath. We spent time at the Stupa until the car came and picked us up to catch our flight to Pokarrah. On the following day, we flew from Pokarrah to Jomsom for the center piece of the trip...Mountain Biking the Lower Mustang region. Once we got to Jomsom, we rode our bikes up the Kali Gandaki river to the village of Kagbeni. We stayed in a tea house in Kagbeni for 2 nights and for two days rode bikes on through some amazing high desert terrain.

After the stay in Kagbeni, we turned our bikes down the river course to back to Jomsom. One night in Jomsom, and then back on our bikes to Kalopani. Riding down the river course took us through several small villages that reflect the real Nepal. Truly a great experience. After leaving Kalopani, there was one more big ride to a point some 25 km down stream where we were met by a Jeep to take us back to Pokarrah.

Through this entire trip, everything was well planned out and prepared. The hotels, the flights, the ground transportation, nothing was overlooked. I was well taken care of. My guides, Dawa and Tendu were superb, and basically just good people to be around. The coordination and professionalism of all of the guys who handled my trip made it a great success. I will be going back to Nepal, and I will use this crew again. Many thanks to Dawa, Tendu, Raj, and Mads!!

Mads Mathiasen, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thanks David, it was a pleasure to show you some of the trails Nepal have to offer. Do get in touch when you want to come and see some more. Cheers, Mads.

Traveler: Julia T. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

The trip was well planned! Only thing is i wished that the porter and guide where treated more as guests than employees of the hotel. In our night at dhulikhel, the employees said that our guide & porter could only eat when they ate. While we had hot shower and luxuriously a heater, our guide and porter only had cold water. The disparity was not nice to witness

Mads was patient in answering my questions, proactive, had suggestions to my problems.

Hi Julia, thanks for your kind words and for traveling with us. I appreciate your concern for our crew, I have spoken to Suman and he said the Dal Bhat he ended up getting with the staff was very good but we will speak to the hotel and make sure the guide and porter do have the option to join you the traveler at meal times. Thanks again for traveling with us and hopefully we will see you again in Nepal.

We absolutely loved our adventure and will definitely consider using the agency again on future adventures!

Matthias was very concerned with making sure our trip went as smoothly as possible. His communication skills are fantastic as well as his knowledge about Iceland and his ability to make sure your vacation is fabulous!

The trip couldn't be more perfect! Ngima ensured that everything went smoothly and even spent a fair bit of time with us. Our guide, Pemba was very knowledgeable and ensured we were safe and comfortable throughout our trek.

Booking it thorough kimkim was an easy and straightforward process. We love how we got a customised trip based on our interest and could communicate and plan everything with Ngima easily through the chat function.

We highly recommend kimkim and ngima's company as service and quality is top notch.

Katherine worked very hard on our behalf, especially given the short time frame in which we were planning. She also was great while we were in country and got sick and had to revise parts of our trip. She was always available to help re-adjust. There were two of the lodging options that were disappointing. Cartagena, Tayrona and Silvia were the highlights of the trip for me.

Katherine Caicedo, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Laura,

Thanks for the review and comments regarding your trip to Colombia.

We are really happy to know the overall experience was positive and will definitely take into account your remarks to improve our services. I enjoyed a lot planning this adventure for you and Steven and I hope you will come back soon.

Everything was pretty great about our trip. Details were well drawn up and explained a lot of sites to see on the way as we drove. All very well done.

Only thing that was any sort of a snag was that our Waterfall Ice Cave tour that we booked for Jan 3rd at 10:30am apparently was transferred.... to another tour service without telling me? So as we showed up at 10:15 to the meeting area for our 10:30am tour - with my ticket saying 'paid in full' to Arctic Adventures (whom I had received my email confirmation from) they looked at them and then their lists and said 'you're not on our list'.
So the nice man made a call.
He came back with "Apparently this tour was Cancelled Dec 12th and your money was refunded".....
hmmmmm.
He said his guy was going to make a call and look into it further, but it was now 10:20 and tours were leaving at 10:30 so we were hoping it would be worked out before then...

He then came back and said 'So I guess due to scheduling or booking this tour was booked, cancelled, and then you were transferred to another tour company? So go over there to Iceguide van and they should be taking you now..."

So we did, and a nice man named Oskar said 'Yep, you're with us.' and we went on a tour.

But it was concerning that at no time was any info about us not being with Arctic Adventures was shared... Had the nice man not made a call to try and figure it out we would have just went home and the correct service provider may have just left without us and our two seats being wasted...

Just was bummed I never got any sort of 'your tour has been cancelled, or transferred to another tour service' update...... with another tour companies name to find.

Aside from that everything went off without a hitch!!
So thank you!

Such great input on all questions asked, he really helped make the trip happen.

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Sara, welcome back!

I am glad that everything went well aside from the Ice Cave tour confusion. I will look into this matter more and sort out what happened and make sure we avoid these types of issues for our future travelers. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

I hope you enjoyed the fireworks and bonfires around Reykjavik on NYE, and that the days were not too short for you to see and do all that you had hoped.

We look forward to helping you on your next kimkim adventure, where ever that may be!

Traveler: Rob G. - Local specialist: Matt Loveland

Both our guide and driver were excellent. The major disappointment was the Al Capitan camp. The room lacked heating and the hot water was luke warm. We did not feel it was up to the standard we were expecting. I got a cold due to the coldness.

Matt Loveland, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thanks Rob for the feedback. We're pleased you had a good trip. Due to it being peak season the regular camps we work with in Wadi Rum were fully booked, but normally captains camp is fine. None of the tents have heating, but normally there are extra blankets available, and guests generally sit by the fire in the evening before sleeping. This doesn't help you, but the other camps we prefer to book with do have electric blankets on the beds, which do help. I'm sorry you got a cold, I hope you feel better shortly.

hi there: Our guide and porters were excellent! The first night accommodation was 1 star and that's being generous. I was under the impression that it was going to be a 3 star. Apparently our family of 7 cost $20 USD total to stay there, which is no surprise, as camping would have been more glamorous. I don't know why the tour company went so cheap on us, obviously to save money, but it wasn't fair, given we weren't told we were going to be in a 1 star of less, and if I had known this, I would not have booked with this company, as all the others who I inquired with were all going to put us in 3 star for the same price. The second night accommodation was HORRIBLE and would be given a negative 3 star rating! My family all said (and that's our 5 kids) that it was the WORST place we had ever stayed. There was vomit filling the bathroom sink when we arrived and no one cleaned it until I complained. The kitchen facilities were SO dirty, I refused to have food cooked in it for dinner, and instead bought chocolate bars down the street for my kids to eat. The food for that night was supposed to be included. We ended up paying for it ourselves. Breakfast left us no option but to eat white toast and have a few hard boiled eggs each. It was so disappointing. The beds had dirty sheets on all beds, and the toilet did not flush. There was no running water in the sink for brushing our teeth or cleaning up. Like the first night, our sleep was freezing cold, like we were camping outside. Windows were broken, or didn't shut properly. We could see our breath while eating our breakfast and dinner on both nights. For the price we payed to do this trip, we were ripped off. The third night was the only night that was acceptable with a proper three star hotel. Honestly, if the trip company we were introduced to through your sight told us we would be in 1 or negative star ratings for the first two nights, we would have gone with another company. As I said, the guides were excellent, helpful and very personable, and the last night of our stay was great, but the first two nights really left me no choice but to NOT recommend this company to any of my many, many expat friends. We were NOT satisfied, and very uncomfortable in our stay for the first two nights, and feared for food poisoning, catching a disease from the uncleanliness of the second place, with the vomit, other body fluids present, dirty bed sheets, as well as general uncleanliness. (cigarette burns in carpet, non functioning toilet ( already soiled when we got there) and non functioning water taps in our bathroom sink. Please understand as diplomats, a 3 star rating is a minimum, and if we had wanted to stay in a hovel, we would not have gone with this company in the first place. Though they get an A + on service on a personal level, the accommodations on the first two nights were completely , and utterly NOT acceptable and the second night, completely disgusting in all respects.

Raj was amazing. He hosted us lunch at the office, gave us t-shirts, took us to an outlet store to buy gear and arranged safe transportation, gave us his best guide ( wonderful!) and great porters, the first two nights accommodations were - first - 1 star and second night, - negative 3 star rating, as in "we wanted to leave, but were stranded" and no choice but to stay. I felt like I was a hostage.

Raj Gyawali, local specialist, responded to this review:

Linda,

Sorry to hear that your experience was so terrible in the first two nights. I can assure you that this was not our intention at all and the effort we made to give your family the first trek experience you wanted in Nepal that was soft, short and easy was entirely genuine.

The fact that the accommodations at chisopani and jarsingpauwa are basic is normal. The reason you have great guides and crew is because they can manage hygiene and expectations in situations like this.

This is also why we offset the two days accomodation with a proper hotel on night three.

We had also made a suggestion of a proper full 3star accomodation trek which included nagarkot, dhulikhel and bhaktalur which you turned down because of the price and interest in more walking.

Regardless, i am very sorry this happened. We never like to have disappointed travelers, but sometimes the expectation vs reality divide in Nepal can be challenging.

I still hope you had a good first experience of what multi day trekking can be like in Nepal, regardless of the accommodation problems. No matter where you feel in Nepal, full 3star accommodation treks are difficult in nepal, and most places will always offer basic accommodation, simple. Trekking eventually in Nepal will never be about the accommodation, but the experience in the mountains.

My apologies for the bad accommodations.

Most national parks in the world have guides who know the big animals and birds of prey, but our guides in Chitwan knew every bird and butterfly as well.

We discussed the trip and made changes to his original concept several times but he never tried to force us into his plan and cheerily re-worked the itinerary until we were happy with it.

Dear Daniela and Berry, it was a delight arranging this trip for you and I am so happy you enjoyed it! Matching German clockwork is not easy and I would be lying if I said we always pull it off, but I am really glad we managed to do so for you.
Thanks for traveling with us and next time I think we should try to get you out to Bardia National park in West Nepal. Happy New Year! Thanks, Mads.

Overall the trip was fantastic. While I think that it was near perfect, the number of things that were on our itinerary were too many and the number of daylight hours were just not enough.

I think that Chris could have been more clear advising us about the short daylight hours. (I too claim responsibility for not delving further into this) but otherwise Chris did a great job. He was accessible and was quick to respond to any questions before and during the trip. He offered a number of suggestions based on our first discussion.

Chris McCarty, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Savio, welcome back from Iceland! I'm glad that you enjoyed your time in Iceland. In retrospect, I should have given you some more information about the daylight hours and focused the itinerary more around the highlights that you could see during the limited time. Thank you for the feedback, and I hope that you decide to use the kimkim service for your next trip, wherever it may be.

btw, great photos! Jokulsarlon at sunset looks great, and I'm glad you were able to see the northern lights despite some clouds.

So thank you, I am quite sure we will use you again. Our trip was outstanding. Best wishes to all involved in working with us.

Overall great, despite one of the guides not showing up (he had the times switched), but that was resolved by Nathalie, the guides that showed up were awesome, their historical knowledge in Bogota, and the 2 in Villa de Leyva, was phenomenal. The people (guides, drivers, and locals) were extraordinarily friendly, and open to sharing their customs.

If I could change one thing it would have been longer planning time (not on you), because I would have altered my itinerary slightly to avoid a lot of movement from town to town, probably returned from Villa de Leyva to Bogota rather than go to Barichara just to avoid the transportation time, and likely headed to Cartagena a day earlier since it was a place I needed more time at. Nothing major, overall great support by Nathalie, and a fantastic trip.

Thanks, looking forward to using your services again.

One of things that could have been improved would have been a clearer picture of how the process worked. It wasn't clear when hotels would be booked, when final payment would be required, and expectations of what I could ask for before/during the trip.

In addition to suggested places/attractions, it would also have been handy to have restaurant/food recommendations that are culturally unique.

Kishiko was very helpful and cordial throughout the planning process. Her travel plan was very thorough and certainly came in helpful. The extra mile she went to ensure our train tickets were sorted during the trip was really appreciated!

What could have been improved was more upfront communication throughout the planning process. It wasn't always clear where things were at and it was left up to me to periodically check in.

Kishiko Shimizu, local specialist, responded to this review:

Dear Samsan,
Thank you very much for your review.
Sorry for some unclear parts, but I am glad that you seemed to have good time in Japan.

Amanda was wonderful during the planning process in making suggestions, fulfilling our requests, and providing insight and advice on the local area. Again, she was also always available to us prior to the trip, and she made a point of seeing us three times when we were actually in Kathmandu, which was totally above and beyond what she needed to do and very much appreciated.

Traveler: jo b. - Local specialist: Ngima Dorji Sherpa

I was grateful to have found a resource like Kimkim to go to. I was overwhelmed trying to find a reliable tour company in Nepal and having your recommendation took all the guess work out and that was really awesome.

Ngima was extremely responsive right from the start and was actively monitoring how our trip was going throughout. We got an excellent pre trip catch up and post trip meeting.

Ngima Dorji Sherpa, local specialist, responded to this review:

Thank you very much Jo for your warm appreciation towards our service on your visit. It's so great to know that you are very very satisfied and we are glad that our goal to make you happy with your trip got achieved. We hope and wish to welcome you again soon in Nepal for your next trip to new destination.

Best wishes,

Ngima.

Raylene and friends custom tour of nepal , Nepal - Nov 5 - Nov 11, 2016

Traveler: Raylene H. - Local specialist: Amanda Delecca

Our trip was near perfect and we had a wonderful time.

Our only hiccup was the trek. We understood that we would just meander through the hills slowly rising, whereas this was not the case.

Amanda was really helpful and answered our questions promptly with lots of detail.

Great to have someone with first hand knowledge.

Our only suggestion would be that she does the treks as we were told there was only a few steps. Debbie's had a knee replacement so she was quite concerned about there being steps.

Amanda Delecca, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Raylene,

Thanks so much for your review! We're pleased to be able to provide you and your 3 friends a 'near perfect' trip and we're glad we were able to re-route you to the lovely Temple Tree Resort when the walk up the hill wasn't as per your expectation. Thanks again, Amanda

The tour guide Begga was super nice , on time, and we always felt felt and comfortable with her.
A few things that could have been done better:
1- it would have been nice to have received a detailed itinerary before getting there (we had a 5 line itinerary before the trip).
2- more information (geography, history) about the places we were seeing/visiting

Kristin helped organize the trip and all that we decided to do, we did it.

Grimsborgir was pretty desolated so we would have preferred to be in Reyvajvik a few more nights. I understood that Grimsborgir was the best place to be doing excursions from. Unfortunately it rained all week and we did not see the northern lights which was another reason we stayed in Grimsborgir.

Kristín Sævarsdóttir, local specialist, responded to this review:

Dear Paula,

It was very nice meeting you for a coffee at our office. I know Begga really enjoyed the time with you and she will be happy to hear you liked the tour.
Regarding the itinerary I am really sorry about that this was a bit of a misunderstanding on my behalf. You where our first Kimkim guest and we where still learning how to work together. I hope you enjoyed the late itinerary you got from Begga and that informed you about all the beautiful sights you saw.
I hope to see you again in Iceland, then I will have a brand small baby guide to intorduce to you.
Have a wonderful day.

All the best,
Hildur

I had to follow up a pick up time and itinerary several times. The first guide was late, thought I was being transferred to a different hotel, because he had his bike we walked for a decent while before being able to get a taxi which would take us and the bike.

The cycle tour was quite good. But the ending was disappointing being a festival there was no pizza and a drink. We found a place to have a drink and I was left to pay for my own taxi back to the hotel.

The cycle tour was quite good. But the ending was disappointing being a festival there was no pizza and a drink. We found a place to have a drink and I was left to pay for my own taxi back to the hotel.

The following day the monkey temple and the monastery were great. The monk was very illuminating and spoke very well. It was disappointing however that we could only talk for an hour and the monastery and library closed 15 minutes after finishing our discussion with the monk.

The welcome dinner was very nice and the social tours consultant (the young girl) she was very friendly and nice to talk to.

I enjoyed my time with Juman over the next few days hiking. The villages and scenary were nice even if majority of the time we were walking on the road.

I was disappointed that the hiking times were advertised 3.5-4.5 hours every day when the first day I walked for 2 hours and 10 minutes only and was eating lunch by 10am in an effort to stall time. On the second day we walked to Bhaktapur and again I was there much earlier then expected.

Juman was great company and the local guide in Bhaptapur had a lot of knowledge of the area.

Getting back to Kathmandu was very unorganised. I had to insist that the Peacock guest house organise and pay for the taxi back to Kathmandu as I was having trouble with my bank cards so couldn't get money out of the ATM's.

I was supposed to stop off at the coffee plantation on the way back which never happened, and the taxi driver asked for money when I arrived at the hotel implying that he hadn't been paid. He called the Peacock guest house and thank fully they sorted it out for me.

I thought that a transfer to the airport was included on the final day but this was not.

Whilst I liked the accommodation and it was very nice compared to the hostels I had been staying in, it was apparent that there was lots of other options (cheaper options) in the areas where I stayed which would have drastically reduced the amount which I paid for the trip, and I was disappointed that despite my request that this wasn't looked into.

Raj Gyawali, local specialist, responded to this review:

Kayla, am sorry to hear that some of the experiences we developed were not quite what you expected. I can assure you however that from our side, we have made every effort to ensure that it does match your expectations, in fact, exceed it.

Some of the errors have been pure misunderstandings which should not happen. I agree, and the feedback you have provided will ensure that we avoid these errors in the future.

Thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback. I must assure you that we do take peoples dream trips very seriously, and nothing that we did was done frivolously, but sometimes, situations make us have to adjust programs. Usually these adjustments enhance the trips even more, but unfortunately in this case, was not so! I regret that, as I feel bad that you did not have a fulfilling experience. That is never our intention!

Social Tours couldn't have been better - we'd recommend them to anyone. They pulled together a fantastic trip and were very accommodating of requests we made whilst out there. The guides were great, too.

I have just returned from a 6 days Pikey Peak tour with Nepal Myth and Mountain Trails. HIGHLY recommended tour company! Very organized and professional company. The owner of the company, Ngima is very passionate and concerned about making the guest's experience a memorable one. My guide, Pembac did a great job giving me a lot of interesting information about mountain trails and culture of Nepalese people. These guys absolutely exceeded our expectations in every way. Thank you Nepal Myth and Mountain Trails!

Thank you very much Mario for a wonderful compliment on our service for your trip to Pikey Peak. We are very glad that you are fully satisfied from our services and we hope to welcome you soon again in Nepal for your next trip.

This was a very well planned trip. We really enjoyed the first night in Egilsstadir as well as the road trip to Vik. We wish we'd ha done extra day to do a bit more hiking as we ended up spending extra time in Vik.

Joost helped with every single step of this trip and was amazing with returning emails. The one time I reached out on the first day of the trip we received a quick response from one of his team members. Fantastic service!!

Joost Schreve, kimkim staff, responded to this review:

Hi Marisa,
Thank you very much for your review and your amazing photos! It was a real pleasure helping you plan your trip, and I hope to work with you on future trips again.

The organisation regarding transport and accommodation were good, it is easi r to have your private transports Than going on the public bus and avoid the walking in on the first day to soti kola. As the days went on, we trusted more the guide and the porters. At the beginning guide was using some trainers and jeans instead of some hiking gear. He then bought hiking boots as the ones he had broken, and from day 4 onwards he had appropriate gear, including pants and down jacket. It may be our judgement, but I believe it is important guide and porters to have proper gear, it is another safety measure. Porters did almost the entire track in flip flops except the day of the pass in sneakers. They said that is what they are used to. So this would be my only remark, ensure guide and porters have the appropriate gear. The Xperience was outstanding and the guide and the porters fantastic, which definitely contributed positivity to the whole experience.
Our guide was able to answer majority of the questions that we had about Nepal and or nepali culture. This is important feature of the guide to be able to talk about the country and not only about the trek

Before the trip, communication was extremely efficient. In nepal, she was friendly and approachable. Nice touch at the end, with a meeting after the trip to hear feedback and give us a
Little survenir

Manaslu and the tsum valley, Nepal - Oct 2 - Oct 22, 2016

Traveler: Rohan D. - Local specialist: Mads Mathiasen

Early notice that Tsum valley was closed eas very helpful, so that we had the right passes to go to Nar-Phu. Guide was excellent, very attentive, spoke fluent English, and accommodated our changes tho the itinerary.

Really responsive to our pre-trip questions and the face tho face meetings were also really helpful.

Mads Mathiasen, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Rohan, glad all went well and the Nar-Phu was a good alternative to the Tsum valley. Good that you had a good time with Gelu and that everything was flexible enough for you. Hope to see you in Nepal again some day. Thanks, Mads.

I guess my two suggestions would be: 1. You don't necessarily have to spend the night in Hile, especially when you have a car arranged to pick you up there. I guess for those that have a tighter schedule. 2. When you do stay overnight in Hile just as we did, in hindsight we would have had no problem to walk the next day to Biretanthi. I mean the car was perfect and we had I think the best driver of the whole of Nepal, yet it feels a bit like we bother the villagers and trekkers that did walk... read more

Podestine was a little far from town and accommodations of room were not great i.e. Sheet for blanket, shower did not drain, however Lara at the desk was amazing! Sailing trip did not have much time for swimming and snorkeling, majority was sitting on the boat, skipper was nice but would not recommend. Plitvice was amazing as well as accomadations, Dubrovnik is beautiful and Zagreb did not disappoint!

Tom's 5-day trip to iceland, Iceland - Sep 15 - Sep 19, 2016

Traveler: T H. - Local specialist: Bjorn Gudmundsson

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and appreciated the recommendations for restaurants and hotels. We don't usually use a travel agent, but for Iceland it was hard to know what to fit in for a quick 5 day trip, and Bjorn was great. Very easy to work with and responsive to our requests. He not only arranged airport transfers, he also set up a ride to the rental car, made sure we had a gps loaded with key spots, and gave us a phone to use with his contact info as well as all the other information we needed.

Bjorn Gudmundsson, local specialist, responded to this review:

Hi Tom and thank you very much for your feedback. It was a pleasure working with you and I am very happy that you enjoyed your Iceland trip!
Great pictures!
