Sharon Louthian

American by birth and Moroccan-Berber by marriage, I first traveled to Morocco as a tourist and fell in love with the country and its people (one in particular). Since my initial visit, I have traveled extensively throughout the country and especially enjoy discovering secret places off of the beaten path. Together with Abderrahman Idrissi, my Moroccan husband who has over 20 years experience in the tourism industry, we enlisted the help of his brothers (who serve as our in-country tour managers) to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. As a family business, we enjoy developing relationships with our guests that continue beyond their trips to Morocco and our goal is for our guests to leave with a little of our love for the country and its people.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"People always ask me what there is to do in Morocco and I always reply that an easier question would be what can't you do there! And we can help you with all of it. Of course, we share the rich history and the important landmarks that any tour to Morocco includes, but we also provide unique opportunities to mix and mingle with the locals that allow our guests to gain insight into day to day life. So if you are looking for an authentic experience (budget or luxury) that takes you off the beaten path, then we are the company for you. And if you want to throw in a little hiking, trekking, rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing, kite-surfing, mule trekking, horseback riding, or even skiing (yes, I said skiing), we can do that, too!"

How did you get involved in travel?

"My path towards a career in travel was a crooked one, but began with a vacation to Morocco in 2012 where I met the most amazing guide, Abderrahman (Abdou for short). He was so amazing, in fact, that after a few more visits we decided to get married. After he had settled into life in the United States, an opportunity presented itself for us to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. And so, after many years of discussion, we "pulled the trigger" and Morocco Immersion was born."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Obviously, my trip to Morocco in 2012 was life changing - talk about transformative travel experiences! Besides meeting my soulmate on that trip, I was mesmerized by the desert and upon my return dreamt about it for 30 nights in a row. Abdou told me that that was the magic of the desert. In subsequent trips, I got to learn more about the culture and meet more of the locals, and that's when I discovered that despite the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes, the true beauty of Morocco is the rich culture and the warmth and generosity of its people. Sharon helped us plan a fantastic vacation in Morocco. We worked for several months (okay, more like a year!) tweaking and fine-tuning the itinerary. Sharon was very receptive to our wants (and not-wants). The trip itself... simply stunning! Morocco has so much to offer... the incredible scenery, the culture, the vibrant cities (with their hectic and oh-so-lively medinas), the wonderful people, and the food... oh my, the food (just to name a few). The lodgings that Sharon chose for us were fabulous -- much more opulent that we're used to. We were treated like royalty. My wife often quipped... "What is it, do we have 'Queen' and 'King' stamped on our foreheads?"

Hicham Idrissi (our tour manager/guide/driver) served us so well. He was with us for most of the seventeen days. He gave us time to explore on our own, but our walks with him around the towns we visited (notably, Chefchaouen, Fes, Rissani, his neighborhood in the Valley of the Roses, Marrakech, and Essouira) were highlights of this trip. His knowledge of the country, the cities, and the sites made this vacation so much more rewarding and meaningful. The only downside was that he had just come off two back-to-back tours (this was his third) and he seemed (understandably) exhausted from time to time. Another driver picked us up in Casablanca at the beginning of our trip. The next day, on the way to Chefchaouen, we did a "chinese fire drill" where or initial driver, Said, dropped us off and Hicham picked us up (Said took his clients to the airport as they were finishing their tour and Hicham turned around and we headed to Chefchaouen) -- no rest for the weary! Near the end of the trip (in Essaouira) Hicham kind of "ghosted" us and returned to the Valley of the Roses to tend to some personal business (telling us only after he was back home). We did not miss a beat though. We were (by design) on our own in Essaouira and by the time we needed to return to Marrakech, Sharon and Hicham had arranged for a fill-in driver to finish the trip for us. Hicham's communication could have been better and we really regret not having a chance for proper face-to-face goodbyes and thank yous.

Some of the highlights (but there was SO much more):

* The dinner and after-dinner festivities at Riad Dar Chrifa in Rabat
* Chefchaouen and the walk to Cascade d'Akchour
* The medina walks in Fes and Marrakech (Essaouira, too)
* The Rissani Market
* The camel ride and spending a night in a desert tent camp in Erg Chebbi
* The day with Sharon, Hicham and friends (including a delightful home-cooked meal and a walk around the old neighborhood) in the Valley of the Roses
* The cooking class in Essaouira (Khadija's Kuzina) -- Hussein and Khadija (and their son, Amir) were simply delightful. It was just us and them in their flat. A truly special and unforgettable experience.
* The wonderful lodgings and meals throughout the trip.

Hotel Reviews
Riad Dar Chrifa
Rabat

Great location. We were able to choose which of the five rooms we wanted. The dinner and after-dinner entertainment was wonderful -- a great first-night introduction to Morocco! The staff was so friendly and helpful.

Authenticity & Character
Location
Right in the old medina and only a short walk to the Kasbah of the Udayas. The medina (at least where we were) was not as vibrant as those in Fes or Marrakech -- it seemed more "off the beaten path" of tourists which had its own appeal.
Staff
Great staff. Very personable. We really had fun with them at dinner and with the music and dancing afterwards.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Palais Faraj Suites & Spa
Fès

Very, well, palatial! Way above our "pay grade" but a special experience (probably for that reason). Our suite (and it was a suite with multiple rooms, two bathrooms, several sitting areas, and a walk-close) was spectacular. It opened out directly adjacent to the pool area.

Authenticity & Character
Very exotic and elegant. We tend to gravitate to more modest (but clean and comfortable) lodgings, so this was a special treat.
Location
It is located on the edge (in the wall) of the medina. We did not walk down into the touristy part of the medina from the hotel, but probably could have.
Staff
Very helpful. I had come down with a bronchial irritation (mostly coughing and a hoarse voice). They were very helpful in suggesting remedies and a nearby pharmacy.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The suite we stayed in is probably the most opulent we've ever experienced.
Ksar Timnay Hotel
Midelt

Very satisfactory accomodations. Nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable. The provided meals (dinner and breakfast) were excellent. It's located well north of Midelt and there's not a lot to do, but we did buy a couple beers at the front desk and took a short walk to a nearby lake which was very pleasant.

Authenticity & Character
Very distinctive design. The room was large and nicely appointed although rather "plain" compared to other lodgings we had during this vacation.
Location
Well, not that they can do much about it, but there's not too much to see nearby (e.g., within walking distance) except for a small lake. But that's okay. We stayed for just one night.
Staff
No complaints at all... just nothing comes to mind that stands out as superlative. They did offer wine and beer which is not always easy to come by in Morocco.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The room was clean and comfortable but the furnishings are a bit dated and.. well... plain.
Riad Madu
Merzouga

Wonderful lodging in the desert (almost, if not truly, literally). Our room was large, elegant (in a Moroccan, desert-y way), and very comfortable. The common areas are very spacious and nicely decorated. We spent some time around (and in) the pool which was very welcome after a hot day of travelling. The provided dinners and breakfasts were delightful. Highly recommended!

Authenticity & Character
This hotel seemed to fit in perfectly with the desert surroundings. In our room, the domed ceilings (one above the shower and another above the toilet) with star and moon cut-outs were unique and distinctive -- really added character to the room.
Location
Right on the edge of Erg Chebbi. You can walk to the dunes. You'll see camel caravans (sometimes only one or two) coming and going.
Staff
Cleanliness & Comfort
Chez Ichou
Dades Gorge

We would rate this hotel near the top -- relative to what we need in a hotel. It's definitely not "over the top" but it is so pleasant and comfortable. We had our own balcony overlooking the pool (and exterior dining) area as well as the gardens and farms and rocky cliffs of the Dades Gorge. The dining experience was exquisite -- some of the most elegant meals that the had on our whole vacation in Morocco.

Authenticity & Character
Chez Ichou seemed to fit right in with the Dades Gorge look and feel. It is rather unpretentious from the outside but so nice and "friendly" inside.
Location
RIght on the road to from Boumalne Dades to Tisderine Bends.
Staff
Always very friendly. We were here only two nights but the staff treated us like we were family from the outset.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Very quiet, even though it is right on the road up the gorge. Our room was on the other side of the building (facing the valley). We have fond memories of relaxing on the balcony and enjoying the view and a glass of wine.
Riad al Rimal
Marrakech

This riad is "buried" (in a GOOD way) in the Marrakech medina. To get to it, we had follow a maze of narrow pathways, corners, and junctions. Delightful. Once through the front door, you're in a modern, elegant riad. The room was modernly appointed and very comfortable.

Authenticity & Character
Very modern interior appearance which could be perceived as out-of-place in old Marrakech, but this did not detract from its appeal. The only exposure you have to the exterior is the front door (buried in the narrow pathways of the medina) and the rooftop lounge where we enjoued our breakfasts. The pool at the bottom of the interior atrium provided a very elegant common area. I don't think any of the rooms had windows to the outside (only to the interior atrium), but we didn't miss them.
Location
In the old medina and a short walk (5 minutes) from the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. Perfect.
Staff
Friendly and helpful, but maybe not quite as personable as with some of the other lodgings where we stayed during our vacation in Morocco.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Very clean and neat. The rooms (we stayed in two different ones) were not huge but definitely sufficient. One minus... the cleaning crew uses a very aromatic cleaning solution (rose-scented I believe), which we found a bit overpowering. We mentioned this to the staff and they apologized and assured us that the crew would use a non-aromatic solution thereafter. It was much better the next day.
Villa Quieta Essaouira
Essaouira

This is like having a bedroom in a palace! The common areas are stunningly elegant -- both the main areas on the ground floor as well as the smaller common areas outside the private rooms. Our own room was very neat, clean, and good-looking -- perhaps not on par, elegance-wise, with the common areas, but so suitable for our needs.

Authenticity & Character
As mentioned in the review, staying here is like being invited to the residence of royalty. We were given a bedroom (nicely appointed) upstairs and off several very comfortable and elegant sitting areas. If your travelling party requires several rooms, this would be a perfect option -- several rooms around a common "living room".
Location
Villa Quieta is on a quiet (hence the name, maybe) side street right off the waterfront promenade. But it is a little ways from the old medina and ramparts of Essaouira. We did walk back from the medina on one occasion, but it is not what I would call "convenient" in this regard. That being said, it is an easy (and inexpensive and easily accessible) taxi ride to or from the medina.
Staff
Always very friendly and helpful. The restaurant staff (for breakfast) were high-end restaurantt calibre -- very professional and attentive.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The Villa's gardens and pool area (we used them!) were so welcoming and secluded. There seemed to be a large everpresent cleaning crew taking care of things (they had a lot of areas to cover -- not only the rooms but the oh-so-spacious common areas) but they were quiet and hardly noticed.

Sharon made the accommodation with no problem. Omar, our tour director, was also very accommodating and knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed traveling with him.
The local guides Said, Mohammed and Sellam were incredibly well-versed on history and culture of their respective cities and held our interest for the entirety of their city tours.
They and Omar made this a thoroughly enjoyable experience for us. Their pride in their country and their desire to assure a great experience was palpable and we will not forget our wonderful adventure through Morocco.

Meeting his family was one of the highlights of our trip.

I recommend Morocco Immersion Tours enthusiastically and without hesitation. Look no further for your journey into Morocco. The whole experience exceed our expectations and I know they had a lot to do with it. 10 STARS

I would highly recommend Morocco as a destination. I was so pleasantly surprised.

I would also recommend Kim Kim as the insured that the trip was catered to our liking.

We had the same guide/driver, Hisham, throughout the trip and he made sure we were comfortable throughout the entire journey, as we went to Fes, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech.

There were many highlights, however I would very much like to name a few..
1. I loved the Riads in Fes and Marrakech... especially Riad Farouzi with its wonderful staff
2. The local guides in Fes and Casablanca... both very knowledgeable and interesting
3. The old Roman city in Volubilis, so very much different to rest of the Morocco we saw
4. But most of all I would like to highlight the fact that we were traveling during the last few days of the holy month Ramandan and the Eid al-Fitr and still we got the best tourguides that we could have asked for

This is a beautiful Riad in a great location. Everything is right outside the door but it was very quiet at night.

Everything was perfect except for the odor from the shower drain. We had to cover it with the trash bin and leave the fan on, which is fortunately quiet.

This was a nice drive. So much to see along the way. It went by quickly, even for the kids.

We packed so much into this day. It was one of my favourites. All the experiences were rich with information. Hicham and the other local guides we worked with for tours of the tannery, etc were such a pleasure to spend time with.

This was so fun! Everything was perfect. The hosts, the tent, drivers, camel guides, food, entertainment and even the brief sandstorm were impressive. We had a great time.

My good friend Tim and I decided to take a trip to Morocco to see a land I had never explored. We decided to hire a guide to make the trip easier for us. Had we had the opportunity to design the perfect guide, we could not have done better than Jamal. If you are fortunate enough to be able to meet and travel with Jamal, then you will have a beautiful experience in a wonderful country. His knowledge and energy can not be over stressed in this review. His driving ability is second to none. We got to travel Morocco with the perfect guide. Every city we visited, and every stop we made were enhanced by his presence. Often I don’t ask enough questions, and Jamal could even fill in all the blanks to anticipate what I should be asking. The eight days spent with him will remain with me till my final breath. He knows the ins and outs of Morocco like nothing I could have expected. It brings tears to my eyes even now thinking of the care he took to make my trip perfect. Please seek this young man out for your adventure. I only hope we can meet again someday. I hope he has a great life. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Said and the other guides who also guided us around on the other city tours. Said lead us through Fez and his high energy made that part of the trip perfect. Thank you Said for your service in Morocco and also in the United States Army.
