The trip took us to good locations and we saw what we came to see. However, much of the best parts of the trip were without the guides provided. Only two guides out of the many we had were memorable. The others were so-so or poor. In some cases, proficiency with English was insufficient to have meaningful conversation. On the trips, the food was commonly not great. In some cases, no choice about the specific meal was provided. In other cases, the meals were up to us to find with no particular guidance. The foodie night in Osaka led us to mediocre quality street food. The plan had problems. The plan had us go to a restaurant in Kyoto that was closed on that day. The plan scheduled us to go to the same temple on both of the first two days. We asked for a change ahead of time but that change was not communicated to the guide before we got there (or at least, she was unaware of the change). In one case, the plan sent us to a destination that intended us to climb many stairs but no notice of that was communicated in the plan. Given our age, that was a potential problem. Fortunately, we were with one of the good guides who noticed this and was able to take us to an alternative destination. The hotels were largely fine, although the ryokan in Hakone felt more like a commercial hotel than an inn. There was no indication in the guide that the train trip from Osaka to Kanazawa started with a local train and then transferred to a bullet train. Given the expense, I would not use kim kim again, but would pick local guides via Get your guide or equivalent.

Our visit to Japan was amazing from beginning to end. Our guides Nao and Yuki were wonderful. Nao was so happy for us to view Mt. Fuji and the beautiful cherry trees which were in peak form that day. She was happy to bring us shopping for some specific things and picked a great lunch spot on our Mt. Fuji day.
Yuki was especially concerned with us understanding him and even brought visual aids with him. He was constantly concerned with our comfort and happiness. He made time for us to stop for ice cream and shopping, brought us to my favorite lunch spot with the conveyor belts delivering our food and was very patient with our group of 8 women. He was a great translator during our tie dye experience and seemed to really enjoy showing us around.
We loved the first and last hotels, as they were a bit smaller and gave more personal service. The Kyoto Tokyu Hotel was very nice but maybe a little big and touristy for my liking, although they had a lovely gift shop.
I enjoyed Tokyo and Osaka as cities and also the surrounding areas. In Kyoto, maybe because of where we stayed I did not get a good feel for the city itself. However, we loved the tea ceremony, day in Miyama and the Philosopher’s Path, which we did from Kyoto.
All of our activities were so well planned and we enjoyed them all. Thanks to Sandy for the arrangements and for including everything we asked for.
Japan was so clean and beautiful. The people we met were gentle and polite. The food was delicious. The public transportation was easy to navigate. The bullet train was clean and comfortable. We even got lucky with the weather. Our only rain was during a travel day and our day at Mt. Fuji was sunny and clear.
Thank you, Sandy, for putting together a trip that I will remember fondly forever.
I will go to Kim.Kim again when planning my next adventure.

Had the trip ended before the last few days our rating would be higher. While we learned early on in our travels that we were often overscheduled for our taste, we consign some of that fact to our inexperience as travelers on such a complicated and lengthy itinerary. But toward he end, scheduling of trains and advice about luggage that produced a very compressed day in beautiful Hakone, and that cut short our stay at a ryokan that kept us from fully enjoying what we'd paid handsomely for, really hurt our experience. That same scheduling issue rushed us to Tokyo so that we could sit around with nothing to do while we waited for our hotel room to become available. As noted, we're not experienced enough travelers to have picked up on these shortcomings before they happened but, to Cory's credit, in the times when we did request revisions to other trip plans she responded quickly and effectively.

I also give her credit for easing the concerns I felt about having received a diagnosis of gluten intolerance in the weeks before the trip began. Cory was very helpful in finding places that could accommodate my restrictions--something that isn't necessarily easy in Japan given the predominance in its cuisine of gluten-containing soy sauce.

All in, while we had a great time overall in lovely Japan we were disappointed by plans made toward the end of the trip that wasted our money and hurt our experience in what should have been a highlight of the experience.

Hotel the Celestine Tokyo Shiba
Tokyo

The location was less appealing to us than the Blossom Hibiya because it was a hike to Ginza, but otherwise we liked the hotel. The breakfast was pretty good, and they get extra credit for having placards showing the presence of allergens like wheat that are helpful for the gluten-intolerant. We had already upgraded our room at significant expense, so it was commodious and comfortable, with our only complaint being the lack of English-speaking TV channels and odd lighting controls. Staff was lovely.

Well located close to Ginza and very attractive, our first room was simply too small for us--although probably typical for Tokyo but our upgrade was a pleasure. Although not the best room, the overall experience at Hotel Sanraku was one of the best of our two week Japan trip. The room's shortcoming was in not having a separate space for the toilet. But the breakfast--and in particular the information about ingredients in the offerings that were very helpful to someone who has a gluten intolerance--was a standout, as was the location and sheer attractiveness of the lodging.

Really enhanced our trip to learn about the history, shrines and temples. Getting around by train /bus was great for us and she had to work harder than if we had driver to navigate public transport for sure. Hotels were all nice. It was great. The only note is to warn guides we will want lots of restaurant recs (as where we’ll be is not always areas they’ve eaten. We had good luck using tablelog and AI ) and the food at the Hakone onsen was not very good. But we went out for great meals nearby.

Kimkim helped us pack in great sites, great bites, and eclectic shopping areas into this 8-night trip! Ben worked with me throughout the planning process, and together we were able to curate a trip that would be memorable for our family of four, including a 16 and 18-year old. We were even able to make some tweaks based on areas my son wanted to see.

Our first full day in Tokyo, we were greeted by our guide, Peter. After handing out our Pasmo cards and train tickets for the trip, we set off at a quick clip to see different areas of Tokyo and learn to navigate the transit system. Peter took time to talk with each of us as we set out, and our son particularly enjoyed talking with him. We checked out a food market, then went to a sushi-making class! We all enjoyed that. We went to a beautiful shrine, and then to Harajuku to visit Pokemon Center and explore secondhand stores. He even took us to Shimokitazawa, which we'd had scheduled for Day 3! We finished up in Shinjuku. By the end of that day, we all felt so tired, but confident we could navigate the transit system!

Peter met us on our second day as well, and we drove out to the Mt Fuji / Five Lakes region for a day trip. The private car was incredibly comfortable, and we enjoyed watching the city fade away and the hills dotted with blooming cherry trees roll in. We were incredibly lucky to see Mt Fuji! We climbed up many stairs at a park for iconic views of Mt Fuji and Chureito Pagoda and peak cherry blossoms! Peter was fantastic to snap photos of us often--I really appreciated that! He also managed to secure the last 4 seats for us for a short boat cruise on Lake Kawaguchi. We also went to a museum where we could learn more about the history of Mt Fuji and the Five Lakes region and how it has formed over the millennia. We then enjoyed a lunch from a spot Peter mentioned was more like "Japanese fast food." While we did receive it quickly, it reminded me in no way of American fast food! Delicious.

After bidding farewell to Peter, we explored other parts of Tokyo, including Akihabara. Our hotel was in Ginza, and it was quite easy to get anywhere from the train lines close to us.

We had no problem navigating to Tokyo Station to catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto, and our hotel was just a few minutes away. We enjoyed visiting the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and found a hiking trail to enjoy some time up there without the crowds. Amanda was our guide here . Though very quiet, she is very easy to talk with and is very informative. She took us to Arashiyama, where we went to the bamboo park and walked around the area. Our family rented bikes for a bit and enjoyed a bike ride by the river, then we met up for lunch. Amanda then took us to the Monkey Park where we could observe Japanese Macaques. Amanda was great at taking a manageable pace up the mountain, and offered breaks at regular intervals. It was very crowded, but we enjoyed seeing these animals up close. We headed back to Kyoto and Amanda guided us into Gion and explained geisha culture to us.

Amanda was also our guide for our second Kyoto day, which I called Temple day. We were able to visit Kinkaku-ji Temple and marvel at the gardens and the golden temple, then went to Ryoan-ji Temple to appreciate minimalist beauty. It was truly quite a contrast. We took a train to Nara, where we visited Todai-ji Temple. We were absolutely blown away by this temple, its construction, its massive size, and the stunning larger-than-life Buddha inside. I was so glad to have included this in our trip!

We got to Osaka, and Ursula met us to go explore Himeji Castle. We had the opportunity to tour the grounds with a volunteer who spoke English, and he told us so much more about the castle's history that we would not have gotten on our own. It was really quite a treat to explore this historic site. Ursula was a great guide, and helped us find a delicious food spot before touring the Kokoen Garden. We explored the area around our hotel on our last evening in Japan.

I cannot thank Kimkim enough for helping to make this such a memorable trip for our family!

The Nijo Castle was really cool. The grounds were amazing and very interesting. The tour of all (33) rooms inside was neat but could have been shorter. The temple and the shrine were also really interesting and good to visit; just not really my area of interest to spend much time there.

Hi Patricia,

Hope you are doing great.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful and detailed feedback with us. I truly appreciate the time you took to reflect on your experience.

It was my pleasure to design and support your bucket-list journey. I’m especially grateful for your kind words about the planning process and support during your trip—it really means a lot to me.

At the same time, your insights on several aspects of the experience are incredibly valuable:

Regarding the transportation in Hakone, I completely understand how the difference from your expectations may have impacted the experience. I will take this as an opportunity to further refine how we communicate and arrange local transfers, ensuring everything feels as seamless and intuitive as possible.
Your suggestion about seasonal adjustments is very well noted. Travel experiences are closely tied to timing, and I agree that when cherry blossoms are not yet in bloom, offering equally meaningful alternatives can enhance the overall journey. This is something I will continue to improve in future planning.
I also sincerely appreciate your perspective on the geisha presentation. Cultural authenticity is something I care deeply about, and I understand how different interpretations can shape the experience in unexpected ways. Your feedback will help me reassess and curate experiences that feel more genuine and aligned with travelers’ expectations.

It was truly a pleasure to be part of your journey, and I’m very grateful for both your kind recognition and your constructive insights. I sincerely hope to have the opportunity to assist you again in the future and continue creating meaningful travel experiences for you.

Warmest regards,
Sandy

This was a wonderful trip, however in my own personal opinion there was not enough information on getting around Kyoto Station. Considering that it was all our first times navigating Kyoto Station, my family and I found it very confusing and overstimulating. But in a way, it did prepared us for our next trip to Japan. The trips itself were fantastic, I’d highly recommend walking tours to those wanting to discover more of a certain area. Nevertheless, Leny was a wonderful itinerary planner, very patient and meticulous. Highly recommend her for those wanting to explore Japan.

Hiking the Kumano Kodo was a phenomenal, life-changing experience. We had a marvelous trip and appreciated Kimkim's support in making it happen. That said, we were frequently frustrated before and during the trip with the lack of communication from our local specialist, Shona. This was our third trip with Kimkim and it will probably be our last. Our previous experiences traveling to Chile and Columbia were excellent; our local guides helped us to craft thoughtful, personalized itineraries well in advance so we could get excited and took care of all of the logistics while we were in each country. When I got sick in Columbia, our specialist was able to rebook our flight at a moment's notice. In Chile, our local guide found restaurants that met our dietary restrictions and spoke with staff at hotels to make sure we got whatever we needed.

By contrast, Shona did not finalize our itinerary or send detailed information (including about what to pack) until after we had landed in Japan. I understand that she struggled to find us accommodations along the route and it took effort to do so (as she reminded us several times), although I'm still confused as to why. She claimed our dietary restrictions were not acceptable -- one of us is a vegetarian, the other eats chicken and fish but not red meat -- but at each hotel, they were able to accommodate when we asked. We suspect that Shona was not willing to call places; she referenced waiting for emails to be returned several times, even when the issue was time-sensitive.

Sometimes Shona had done the work, but didn't communicate that to us. We asked her several times before we left home to confirm that we had travel booked between parts of our route, and it wasn't until after we landed in Japan that Shona let us know what had been arranged. If we'd been able to review beforehand, we would have identified several issues. For example, the only transportation option on one of the days was a 6:50AM bus. Shona noted the bus time but did not explain that we needed to work with the hotel to pre-arrange breakfast and lunch because it was before the kitchen opened, or that we could try to arrange a private taxi if desired but had to do so as soon as we checked in because there's only one taxi available in the region. We also asked Shona multiple times before our trip began to rebook our train tickets on the last day because she had scheduled us to arrive at the airport 6 hours early, but she didn't change the time until the day before and complained about having to do so.

In comparison to our first two Kimkim trips, we were disappointed with the level of support we received, which makes us less enthusiastic about using them again or recommending them to others.
