I have been working as a travel specialist since graduating from college twenty years ago. Travel is my lifelong passion. It was such a thrilling thing to venture into a new world full of unknown surprises and soak up the unique sounds, sights, and scents. As a Japan enthusiast, I can't wait to help you create your memory in this country that boasts a myriad of fascinating explorations!

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"Japan!Just let me know what will make your stay in thiscountry unforgettable, perhaps a sensational Wagyu beef culinary experience, a hiking trip to see the traditional Japanese countryside, a luxury afternoon tea with Tokyo’s skyline right in front of your eyes, I will help you truly experience these destinations at your own pace."

How did you get involved in travel?

"I majored in Tourism English in college. That was when I fell in love with travel. After graduating, I was lucky to find a job at a travel company and have been working as a local travel specialist since. Travel keeps people young and I always have full passion for travel."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"It was during the cherry blossom season. I went on a trip to Oshino Hakkai and the vista was breathtaking-blooming cherry flowers creating a sea of pink, Mt. Fuji with its snowy peak standing tall in the background - the beauty has always lingered in my mind."

Sandy did a phenomenal job of planning our trip to Japan. Never having experienced Japan I knew nothing of best places to go for our interest and methods of traveling. The hotels were picked to our specifications, we care about both location and quality. We had expert private guides who took us places and helped us manage where to eat for our special diets. Everything went according to plan and we are currently planning another trip with KimKim.

A lot of the events on our itinerary felt like tourist traps or promotional items that KimKim is paid to advertise. For example, on one occasion, we grabbed lunch at a random hotel, and did a food tour where one of the restaurants was staffed by people who barely spoke Japanese. Our tour guides were great; locals who were much more skilled at Japanese than English, for better and for worse, and offered us amazing recommendations for places to go and restaurants to eat at... only to take us to the restaurant booked by KimKim, which they had very little to say about. However, on one occasion, KimKim let us pick the restaurant we ate at, which was pretty amazing. That same tour hit a bunch of authentic temples, which while deeply over-commercialized, were great to see. I'm biased toward that tour because we saw more nature than shops. If there's a tree on Mount Fuji, we didn't drive anywhere near it... but Kiyomizu was breathtaking.

The reason for the stars off is primarily the amount of tour that felt like a cookie-cutter, copy-and-paste operation. We adjusted our itinerary to be close to family and friends, but the parts that we moved made me question our guide's experience. Because we were further away from the usual events, our typical day began a little after 7AM with an hour or more of transit. Sure, we incurred that when we asked to be further from some of them... but as an example, we were closer to Mt Fuji than her normal tour. She had us leave our hotel at 6AM sharp to be to Tokyo station in time to catch the shuttle... right back to where we started. Literally we drove past our city on the way back to Mount Fuji. This is the sort of thing I paid a planner *specifically* to prevent, and it wasn't an isolated incident: We had to leave the very next day at 7:25 AM to catch a bullet train between our two hotels... which allowed us to arrive *over two hours* before we were able to check in. After we were back in the city from the copy/paste itinerary, things smoothed out. But basically, just look up someone else's itinerary! KimKim won't do a good job on customizations.

My group had a lot of fun on this trip. The rating is because I genuinely believe we'd have had *more fun* if we just planned it all ourselves.

Hotel Reviews
Kyoto Tokyu Hotel
Kyoto

This hotel was pretty amazing, but it was more of a roller coaster. The breakfast bar was great; I'd have been blown away had I not just been at a Keio Plaza that set my expectations sky-high. This hotel's breakfast had most of the same stuff, though our other hotel literally had a soft serve ice cream machine... how do you compete with that? Additionally, this hotel's restaurants had very weird hours. Some were only open alternating Tuesdays/Thursdays, for example. The dinner restaurant required reservations... at a hotel. Otherwise, the amenities were on point, and I particularly appreciate the hotel shuttle to Kyoto Station. The rooms had a good deal of floor space but were short on furniture, meaning there weren't many places to set things, so luggage just had to sit on the floor. At least doing so left plenty of walkway. The fixtures (showers and toilets) were all great, there were no problems with water temperature or pressure, and the hotel had blackout curtains and other lighting control. The hotel paid a lot of attention to aesthetics; the lobby was stunningly beautiful. However, there was only one set of elevators in the whole hotel, so we managed to stop on every floor on our descent from level 6, just to watch people elect to wait for the next elevator.

Authenticity & Character
Stunning lobby, good Japanese breakfasts
Location
Very close to a cool temple, and within a comfortable commute of Kiyomizu and many others.
Staff
Helpful and friendly staff, very accommodating for English speakers
Cleanliness & Comfort
Beds were comfy and the whole hotel was very clean, neat, and pretty. More room to set stuff would have helped.
Keio Plaza Hotel Hachioji
Tokyo

This hotel's breakfast bar is carrying it. It was that wonderful. The hotel had water pressure problems and the shower flailed wildly between unpleasantly cool and painfully hot. But I worked around that by drawing a bath, and I'd do that every day for the breakfast bar, which blew the other hotel from our trip out of the water. The beds were comfortable, though on the firm side, which I believe many will appreciate. Beyond that, our experience was perfect. The rooms were small but there was space to put our stuff under tables and on a shelf above the beds' headboards, so we did better here than at our other hotel which had more floor space but no furniture to put things on.

Authenticity & Character
Features fancy Japanese toilets and modern lighting fixtures. Blackout curtains, good lighting control with multiple color temperatures. American hotels could learn a thing or two.
Location
We wanted to be in Hachioji specifically, so this was convenient for us. If you're vacationing mostly in Tokyo, this will not be convenient for you.
Staff
Very friendly and accommodating to English speakers.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Everything was neat and tidy. Housekeeping did great.

This experience really made the trip for me. Kiyumizu was breathtaking; a real must-see among the temples. We actually hit multiple on this tour, and our guide was so friendly and accommodating; she made plenty of time for all the stuff we wanted to do. Dinner selection was on us, which was also stunning. If I ever book through KimKim again, I'd just tell them I want more of this. It was night and day in so many respects. We met the guide at our hotel, at an hour we set; she provided us bus passes so that we didn't have to worry about transit for these events (or anything else that day), we did everything we wanted at the temples, had a great meal, and left ecstatic.

Quality of Experience
Everything about it. The places, the guide, the pacing, the meetup.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
She was fantastically accommodating; beyond what I'd ever expect, especially given our other tours.
Transport
Transport was provided; everything was included.

Experience oozed authenticity; any deviation from that was carefully noted by our hostess. Good for tourists as there was time for photo shoots in our kimono, which was strongly encouraged. The place featured a small "zen garden" kind of structure for it, and while said garden was pretty much in the heart of the city where I'm not sure grass can actually grow, they made it work. Sitting on my knees is hard, but the hostess was very accommodating in that respect.

Quality of Experience
The authenticity of the experience, along with how sharable a moment it is (from a tourist point of view).

The tour guide was friendly, spoke great English, and took us through some basic Japanese language and culture lessons, which was cute. These stops were over-commercialized tourist traps that managed to be all about Mount Fuji while exhibiting surprisingly little nature (our final stop was better, as it was a shopping center located next to a very scenic lake). The stops on Fuji itself were just tourist traps that charge you (separately and individually) to so much as use the restroom (there *is* a free one on site, as well). I was told to avoid Mount Fuji because it's a tourist trap, and I accepted the risk because hey, I'm a tourist. What I didn't expect is some extremely poor planning on the part of KimKim that made the whole day a huge pain. We had to leave our hotel before breakfast opened (which would have been at 7AM) to make it to the meetup point on time (a bit after 8 AM). To add insult to injury, the bus we boarded in Tokyo passed within a few hundred meters of said hotel an hour later. I was livid. My party constituted three of the five individuals on this tour, and the other two were from a separate stop; KimKim should have arranged a stop for us. Breakfast was not provided on the tour, nor did we have time to catch any before departure. Lunch was some sad prepackaged meal offered at a random hotel along the way. I enjoyed our time by the lake, though.

Quality of Experience
Better scheduling with our existing itinerary.
Food
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Guide was wonderful; friendly, informative, helpful, patient.
Transport
We were on a bus most of the time. How much walking we did was up to us, and we didn't need to worry about rail.

Master Tokyo's Must-Sees: 5-hour Tsukiji, Akihabara & Asakusa Highlights Tour
Tokyo

A lot of good sights, especially the thunder temple, and a good guide to tell us about them. Japan has largely over-commercialized these temples, but it doesn't feel so bad because it's all cheap, all done on the honor system (within the temples; stands around them are pretty touristy), and all deeply rooted in their culture (even most of the local shops and food stands). Some of the pacing could be improved; I'd rather walk and talk when possible, but this tour still left some wiggle room so we could do what we wanted in the area, and the guide made time for photos and helped us out with them. The tour also left us plenty of time to structure the rest of our day around it.

Quality of Experience
Flexible schedule, friendly guide, and good food at a quality restaurant.
Food
Food quality was good, quantity was acceptable, and timing was such that we could do what we liked in town afterward.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Guide was very friendly and helpful, spoke English pretty well, and did his best to make the experience great for us.

Our guide was great. The choice of eateries was questionable. The food selection was predetermined, rather than just setting a budget, so some members of our group left after eating very little (of the 8 pieces of sushi and 3 tempura that were offered at the first joint). The second joint seemed to be higher quality and was far more impressive. We actually bailed on the third place because it was just some type of ice cream and our group was falling asleep, nearly out of phone battery, by that point in the day.

Quality of Experience
Restaurant selection, food variety
Food
Variety, selection... these were two of the three worst restaurants we ate at on our whole trip. They weren't *bad,* there were just *better,* all around.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Our guide was very friendly and informative. We learned a lot from him.
Transport
Most of this experience was just walking somewhere to eat two fistfuls of food, the pacing of meals and stops was terrible, and we had no time to adjust for things the group was actually enjoying.

However, we're truly sorry to learn that some parts of the itinerary felt less personalized and more like standard tourist experiences because they are join in group and have the meeting points and they are far away from your hotel. I will pay more attention on the distance beteen hotel and meeting point. Thanks so much for your feeback about it. We strive to create unique journeys that cater to our travelers' specific interests, and it's disappointing to hear that we fell short in your case. It sounds like there were some frustrating logistical issues as well, and we understand how that can detract from the overall experience.

Your comments about the restaurant choices and the journey planning are noted, and we will address these concerns with our team to ensure we enhance the customization process in the future. We wanted to design our own itinerary for Japan after previous travels there. It was a true collaboration with many iterations and exchange of ideas. The result was a unique experience, much of it to out-of-the-way places. KimKim's management of lodging, travel, drivers and guides was excellent. Hotel Reviews
Gora Kansuiro
Hakone

A traditional design, older property, with excellent location close to Gora station and cable car. Beautiful outdoor bath, comfortable traditional room. Chosen to begin our Japan trip, it was excellent. Property a little worn, and food not the very best we had, but very good and overall the location and atmosphere make this an excellent place both for relaxing in place, and for touring the Hakone area.

Authenticity & Character
A true traditional construction with extensive grounds.
Location
Ideal both for quiet and for proximity to station and cable car.
Staff
Very welcoming and helpful
Cleanliness & Comfort
A little worn, but attractive and comfortable.
Hotel Fukinomori

After a day of hiking on Nakasendo trail, a beautiful and serene place, both modern and traditional. Excellent food, great bathing facilities, a nice common room, well-designed traditional room. Remote location with good shuttle service to train station and local village. Would have liked to stay on.

Wanoyado Hotel Iya Onsen Natural Hot Spring
Miyoshi

Spectacular location in remote Iya valley. Older buildings, rambling layout, very good food, beautiful baths at the bottom of the canyon, rooms high above with great views. Hard to get to but worth the journey, and well-located for Oboke gorge exploration.

Hotel Kanazawa Zoushi
Kanazawa

A small, quiet, and beautifully designed modern building well-located in Takayama. The room was small but so carefully designed that it was one of the better places we stayed.

UNO HOTEL
Okayama, Tamano

Modern building just across from Uno station. Not fancy but functional, and very good restaurant attached. Baths a short walk away - a separate facility more like a US spa, but many good bathing facilities and other amenities. However, for exploring Naoshima, not the best choice, as ferry schedule limits time on the island. If Naoshima is the objective, stay on Naoshima.

Wat Hotel & Spa Hida Takayama
Takayama
Yunagi no Yu Hotel Hanajyukai

Extraordinary place, high on a hill with panoramic views of Takamatsu and inland sea, and private outdoor granite baths for every room. Yet convenient by taxi at reasonable cost to Ritsurin Garden and other tourist sites.

Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei
Kyoto

A medium sized chain hotel, well-run and well-located for touring Kyoto and environs.

Onyado Nono Namba Natural Hot Spring
Osaka

Excellent location for tourism in Osaka. A busy property, small but comfortable room, good breakfast, no evening restaurant - but it the center of unlimited dining places.

Katsura Imperial Villa
Katsura Imperial Villa
Kyoto

We visited Katsura 30 years ago, and it was our most memorable experience in Japan. This time, the garden is still an extraordinary example of design - one of the finest gardens of the world. The feeling is both ancient and modern - as though Frank Lloyd Wright went back a few centuries. But the tour felt rushed, the group of 20 was too large, the English speaking guide was full of information but careless about whether her group could hear it. It seems they are trying to get as many people through as possible, timing the tour to 60 minutes, with no time for reflection or calm. Yet, if this is the only way one can see Katsura today, the experience is still worth it.

Day tour from Takamatsu to Iya valley

Oboke George scenic boat ride is short but spectacular with stunning views and important geology. Vine bridge we expected to be trivial, but turned out to be a wonderful piece of engineering: now with steel cables hidden in the structure, but the design of the fiber structure is a wonder.

Sandy, our local specialist, was incredible in tailoring our trip to our needs. She took our feedback and created a trip of a lifetime. Even when we had any issues, she was so quick to help us resolve them. She checked in with us frequently before, during, and after our trip, and was always at least a day or two ahead of us with the itinerary information we needed to prepare for our next day's adventure. Her suggestions for each day were helpful and fun; we always felt like we had something to do in the area around the activity of the day. We often used the days set aside for shopping as an opportunity to explore cultural experiences instead.

The tour guides selected for us were phenomenal. Taka-San was our guide through Tokyo and Hakone for two different days, and what he was able to show us, teach us, expose us to, and also his suggestions for our free day in Tokyo made the trip that much more interesting, exciting, and enjoyable. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a local guide. Mayumi-San was our knowledgeable guide through Hiroshima, the Peace Museum and Peace Park, as well as Istukushima Island for a full day. She was sensitive with us as we learned more about the aftermath of the Nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima and was able to answer a lot of our questions throughout the day.

One thing I would suggest is for days that involve museums, either make that one of the only things happening that day or not have a tour guide for those days. We would've liked to have had more time to be able to go through the Hakone Open-Air museum and Hiroshima Peace museum and not have to rush to the next thing.

Overall, the trip to Japan was well organized, well-planned, and like a well-oiled machine. All of the accommodations were well-suited to our needs, especially the beautiful breakfast buffets at every hotel. We loved having the good mix of Japanese and western-style breakfasts and all of the staff at every hotel we stayed at were so accommodating and helpful.

Sotetsu Fresa Inn Hiroshima
Hiroshima

We arrived at this hotel before check-in, and the staff were able to hold our luggage for us until check-in time. The hotel staff were very hospitable and helpful. There was a Lawson convenience store connected straight to the hotel, which was, of course, convenient. This hotel is also conveniently located about a 5 minute walk from Hiroshima station, which is huge and has a nice shopping mall attached to it. The amenities the hotel offered were nice. The breakfast was a good combination of Japanese-style and western-style. They had many local delicacies from Hiroshima, including rice, which was very good. We had a connecting room for our last few nights in Japan, in Hiroshima, which was nice, except for the fact that the double-sized bed took up most of the room, with not much room to move around the bed. The connecting room had two twin-sized beds, and ample room to move around. The bathroom was very small and had an actual bathtub with a showerhead included.

The hotel staff was wonderful, and the amenities were great. This hotel is conveniently located very close to Dotonbori, Namba station, and Shinsaibashi Station. It was very easy to walk around Osaka near Namba to many different shopping areas, shrines, and restaurants. We appreciated the rainfall showerhead on the ceiling of the shower. The daily snack and drinks available were a good supplement after returning to the hotel from our day's adventures. The breakfast had good food, especially the takoyaki (Octopus balls), but we would've liked to see more Japanese style breakfast than the western-style that was the majority of what was offered. The chicken karaage was also delicious and the western-style foods were tasty, but left something to be desired. We felt frustrated with only having two washing/drying machines for the whole hotel and had to try to time out doing our laundry perfectly to make sure we had access to the limited machines.

Our hotel room was comfortable with the separated toilet from a Japanese style shower/bath. What made Richmond stand out was their social hour in the evening during which time they provided snacks and alcoholic and soft drinks. Their snacks were delicious and a nice reprieve after a long day of exploring. Their breakfast was also versatile, with a great mix of Japanese style and western-style breakfasts. Their Japanese curry, especially was so good and having made-to-order shabu-shabu was a great start to ours days. They also had make-your-own sushi bowls, which we took advantage of every day. They offered wonderful amenities, including two floors of Laundry available with a television channel that showed available washer/dryer machines. They also offered a tatami-mat coaster workshop, which my mother was able to take advantage of. We didn't know what to expect when we checked into our hotel in Hakone after a long day of adventuring through the mountains, but our expectations were exceeded. The staff were patient and gracious. The hotel room was beautiful and the private bathtub on the balcony was such a wonderful retreat after a long day, despite the mosquitoes outside. My mom took advantage of the private bath on another level and enjoyed it. The free alcoholic and soft drinks offered were next level, and it was a great opportunity to try their plum wine, local beer, sparkling wine, and sake, as well as the delicious, different flavors of sodas and soft drinks. They also offered free coffee, tea, and matcha lattes; all of which were delicious. The hotel is also about a 15 minute walk to the Hakone Yumoto Station. Yukata was provided for all guests, and guests were encouraged to wear them and slippers around the hotel, however, for taller or plus-sized people, and with bigger feet, the fit might be tight. We had a combo package that included dinner and breakfast, both of which were incredible multi-course and beautiful Japanese-style meals. For dinner, it was a set-menu 7 course meal with appetizers, sushi, sashima, shabu-shabu, and other local delicacies, all of which were intriguing, beautifully displayed, and delicious. The menu was in Japanese on beautiful washi paper with hand calligraphy. Breakfast was fairly similar in grandiosity with another set-menu and beautifully displayed dishes and a delicious meal. Our tour-guide met us in the morning at our hotel and took us on a bus to the Peace Memorial Park. We started at the Peace Museum, where we watched a half-hour long film, documenting the experiences and voices of survivors of the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima. The film and museum were difficult to witness, however, we think everyone visiting Japan should have a human obligation to visit Hiroshima and/or Nagasaki to understand the scale and aftermath of the nuclear destruction. The museum and Peace Park were thoughtfully designed and shared the real human impacts as a reminder of the horror of war. Going through the museum does not require a tour guide, and is likely a better experience to go through at your own pace. Later in the afternoon, we took a 45-minute ferry from the riverbank to Miyajima Island with our tour-guide. There, we visited the 50 foot tall Torii Gate, guiding travelers from the sea to the magnificent Istukushima shrine behind it. From the shrine, we climbed the mountain, visiting the Daisho-in Temple, a beautiful Tibetan temple, admiring the sea and mountains around and below. We explored several Buddhist temples up the mountain and one space where we were able to visit 88 different Buddhist Temples from all over Asia by just standing on a tile from each. The small town on the island had several different shops and restaurants. We were able to try matcha ice cream, coffee ice cream, honey-lemon ice, and tornado potatoes, all of which were fun and delicious.

Osaka

Our travel agent Sandy, did a fantastic job giving us directions to the place, as it was not apparent from the street or GPS, but we were able to find it because of her support. Kasa-San and Mari-San (not completely sure of her name) were fantastic instructors and walked us through every step. They had already prepared the workstations before we arrived. They had started the fish dashi and chicken dashi, but we were given clear instructions in English for every other step. We made our own noodles from scratch and were even shown a special technique for kneading the dough. The instructors were fun, funny, and informative about the ingredients we used. They took their time explaining each step to us and also provided printed recipes for each part. The gyoza we made was a delicious appetizer and the ramen was incredible. We will definitely be bringing these tips and tricks to our cooking at home.

When we arrived for the tea ceremony, we were taken to dressing rooms, where employees allowed us to choose our own kimono, obi, and floral ornaments for our (the ladies) hair. The employees helped us get dressed, and braided/styled our (the ladies') hair. My husband was also dressed in kimono, as well. We were then given opportunities to take pictures using their gardens as beautiful backgrounds. We were then led into the tea room with fellow tourists. Our tea ceremony host, Dodo-San was patient, kind, and incredibly hospitable, as she showed us and explained the tea ceremony and making matcha tea, which we were all able to do ourselves. She walked us through all of the customs, and encouraged us to be in the moment with her and our fellow guests. The sweets that were provided were also delicious, especially the red bean paste sweet, and the tea was delicious, as well. The whole tea ceremony experience was an incredible glimpse into traditional Japanese culture. The Ninja museum was interesting, well-constructed, and informative. We would have preferred to walk through at our own pace without a guide, albeit, some information they gave was useful. The shuriken (ninja star) throwing was fun.

Dodo-San was a fabulous host for our tea ceremony, as were all of the staff there. She even took time after to share with us more information and exchange life experiences, as well as went above and beyond to make our experience special.

Hakone

We took at least 5 forms of transportation to and through Hakone, moving between modes seamlessly. The train, rail-car, cable car, gondola, pirate ship, and bus were each so easy to use, and provided beautiful and unique views. Our guide was fantastic in showing us and explaining the sulfur springs and its surroundings, as well as sharing with us the Black hot spring eggs, and the summit of Mt. Fuji. The open-air museum was so cool, however, we would've liked to have spent more time there without having to rush. We weren't expecting to go on a pirate ship across Lake Ashi, but it was such a beautiful ride with an interesting background into the Dragon deities that are said to reside there. Gorgeous landscapes, wonderful art, and interesting history and explanations. The restaurant at the top of Mt. Hakone had absolutely delicious Japanese curry that we're still dreaming of.

Quality of Experience
We were not expecting the amount of activities and modes of transportation all in one day, and it was all incredible.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Our guide, ended up calling ahead to a magic puzzle box shop to give us a private demonstration of their puzzle boxes and took us out of the way to go to this shop. He went above and beyond to ensure we had an amazing time that day.
Transport
We took at least 7 different modes of transportation that day including subway, shinkansen, train, rail car, cable car, gondola, pirate ship, and bus, and all were very convenient and excellent ways of getting around the mountains and lake.
 Imperial Palace East Gardens
Imperial Palace East Gardens
Tokyo

Without a tour guide explaining the imperial family and the grounds, this would have been a lot less interesting. The garden is beautiful, but the historical sight leaves something to be desired. As the royal family resides in the actual palace, it is not accessible to tourists at all; only the gardens and grounds can be visited. There is a lot of walking through the grounds, including several steep hills. The view of the outside of the concert hall is beautiful and the smaller buildings, as well as the history of building the walls is very interesting.

Our tour guide Taka-San, messaged me several days before we were scheduled to meet with him, asking about our preferences and needs, and if he could reserve lunch for all of us at a local sushi restaurant. He was wonderful at communicating before, during, and after our day tour around Tokyo. He met with us at our hotel that morning, showed us how to use the subway station, answered all of our questions throughout the day, and imparted his extensive knowledge upon us. He took us to Meiji-Jingu Shrine, explained the Torii gates to us, the cultural practices, and taught us about the differences between Shinto and Buddhist shrines in Japan. Then, he took us to Tsukiji outer fish market, and was able to talk with local vendors on our behalf, allowing us to buy and experience delicious samples of wagyu beef and grapes. We also had lunch at a delicious sushi bar.

We traveled to Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto for 7 days. Sandy arranged all of our transportation, hotels and several guides and outings. Beginning in Toyko, we spent a day with a guide which was very helpful because it helped us get familiar with the public transportation. After that we were able to wonder around the city easily with helpful suggestions on what to visit based on the areas we were in. Our hotel, Shiba Park Hotel, was perfect for us. The neighborhood was more relaxed and low key, but still very accessible to parks, shrines and temples that we wanted to visit.
Next, we traveled to Hakone. We had a wonderful driver and guide get us down there and we enjoyed the Mishami Skywalk and ziplining through the nature. I loved stopping in this town, as it was fun to wander along Lake Ashi and was a nice respite from being in the busy city. It was amazing how green and lush the entire area was. And don't miss staying at a ryokan so you can experience the onsen - a wonderful, relaxing experience and I was able to get a much needed massage (from all the walking!)
We then traveled by bullet train down to Kyoto. Traveling by train was the best, in my opinion, because it allowed us to sightsee and still travel efficiently. I loved Kyoto. It had a smaller, older feel than Tokyo. It felt like you could wander for hours, stopping to look a temples and shrines at almost every corner and grabbing a bite to eat and drink - which is exactly what we did. We opted to walk most of the city to see things and enjoyed going at our own pace. Sandy set up a sake tasting tour which was great. It was in a cool neighborhood we probably would not have a chance to visit - it was informative and a great group of people. We also rented kimonos one afternoon and participated in a traditional tea ceremony - a true highlight of the trip! It was a wonderful activity that brought us to a neighborhood we ended up hanging out in for hours - the ceremony itself was calming and culturally informative. The woman who lead it was wonderful.
Overall, we had a great trip. Unfortunately, we did not have as much time as I felt necessary to really experience everything we wanted to do and see, but Sandy made the most of the time we did have! Would definitely use this service again!
