Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Location, location, location. MACq 01 is centrally located to access numerous restaurants, cafés, and attractions, including Salamanca Place, with the airport bus stop a 5-minute walk away.
- Relax by an open fire in the luxe lounge, have a drink with a distiller at Evolve Spirits Bar, listen to live music (Sundays) at The Story Bar, and/or dine on traditional bites at the Old Wharf Restaurant.
- Awarded Best Accessible Accommodation in Tasmania, all communal spaces within the hotel are wheelchair accessible, and six equal-access rooms and suites can be requested upon booking.
- Rooms are plush, most with great views over the water, each following a theme that determines materials, artwork, and color palette. For the best views, book a room or suite with a waterfront view.
- Luxury Suites come with upgrades that include breakfast for two, late checkout, and (free) valet parking.
- Complimentary storytelling tours should not be missed; it's a great way to learn about Tasmania's history.
- There isn't a pool or spa on-site, though you can request an in-room massage.
Authenticity
Named after the historic Macquarie Wharf on which it resides, MACq 01 weaves its storytelling theme throughout the property, highlighting Tasmania's history (including its own as a former market-turned-shipping warehouse) and characters through displayed art, furnishings, and cuisine, as well as through five tours (free). Each of its 114 rooms is decorated in one of five themes inspired by personality traits of characters linked to the island. Old Wharf Restaurant's Chef Alvin Sim and his team reimagine classic dishes with a "Tassie" twist, using local produce from boutique Tasmanian growers, and the Evolve Spirits Bar showcases premium distillers from the island alongside fossilized creatures (including dinosaurs).
Location
Right on the waterfront in the Hunter Street Precinct with views of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, you're a 10-minute walk to the city center and to Salamanca Place, where you can pick up the Battery Point Walk trail, follow the Kelly Steps, and check out the Merchant's House. Cafés, bars, restaurants, art galleries, museums, beaches, parks, and public transit are all within easy, on-foot reach. It's a 7-minute walk to catch the Explorer Bus (that takes you up kunanyi), while Hobart Airport is a 15-minute drive or a 30-minute SkyBus ride away (and a 5-minute walk to the nearest pickup/drop-off point).
Rooms & Bathrooms
Each of the 114 contemporary rooms is themed after one of five personality traits associated with the island. The "Colorful and Quirky" rooms use bolder, contrasting colors and whimsical art, for example, whereas the "Hearty and Resiliant" options are decorated in earthy tones and raw materials like timber and rope. Guestrooms are divided into Premium Rooms and Luxury Suites, with the latter offering added perks, including breakfast for two, late checkout, and complimentary valet parking. For the best room in the house, splurge on the Luxury Waterfront Suite for two floors and a private balcony that look out over the River Derwent, Franklin Wharf, and kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Bonus: it also has a fireplace.
Amenities
You'll find the in-house Old Wharf Restaurant serving curated classics from breakfast through to dinner, and The Story Bar and award-winning Evolve Spirits Bar offering up a variety of libations. The Lounge is a cool space to relax around an open fire with a predinner drink. There's on-site parking, where 24/7 valet service is complimentary for those staying in suites. Additionally, the property features Tesla charging stations, a third-floor gym equipped with free weights, treadmills, and rowing machines, as well as self-service laundry facilities for those longer stays. All communal spaces within the hotel are designed with accessibility as a top priority. Guests can also join a free storytelling tour (there are five to choose from).
Family-Friendliness
While children are welcome, there are no amenities or rooms specifically designed for them. Most sleep two adults, some with space for a crib (subject to availability), while some options, including the Superior Hunter Street Room, the Superior Waterfront Room, the Executive Corner Suite, and the Premium Waterfront Suite, accommodate three persons.
