Robert Basiuk

I have a background in environmental science and in addition to travel, I have worked as a biologist and environmental management consultant for many years. I am passionate about the environment and actively seek ways to better manage our resources. Starting our travel company in 1987 was a means to provide an economic benefit for conserving Borneo rainforest and supporting local communities (as well as sharing this amazing destination). My hobbies and interests are in sports and the outdoors and I enjoy trail running, mountain biking, trekking, SCUBA diving, camping and just being outside.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"Borneo: The Red Ape Trail in Batang Ai, Sarawak, Malaysia looking for orangutan in the wild. Staying with local Iban communities in the upper Ai River. Bako National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia in search of proboscis monkeys. Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysia spotting wildlife (orangutans, proboscis monkeys, elephants and hornbills. Mulu National Park, Sarawak Malaysia, caving and exploring some of the world's largest caves."

How did you get involved in travel?

"I originally came to Sarawak to work as a wildlife Biologist with the State National Parks and Wildlife Office. When that contract finished, I teamed up with a local partner to start Borneo Adventure, an in-bound travel company offering trips to Sarawak and Sabah. Our aim was, and still is, to share this wonderful destination with visitors and to have a positive conservation and community impact."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"The first time I went SCUBA diving to Sipadan island, Sabah in 1988. The breath-taking experience of stepping off the back of the boat into amazingly clear waters, surrounded by marine life and a coral-covered wall that seemed to disappear into the depths. "
