Berat Ornek

Having worked in the museum sector for quite some time, I have honed my skills in creating valuable experiences for visitors who want to explore a new collection of artifacts, a cultural site or a yet-to-be-seen urban landscape. At Trail Travel, I am interested in creating stories that make travelers enjoy their visit to Turkey, by integrating different elements of cultural heritage in Turkey, gastronomic explorations, and custom-made routes that respond to the needs of customers.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"At Trail Travel, we specialize in adventure traveling, tailor-made tours on the cultural landscape of Turkey, and creating meaningful experiences for travelers. We are the right company to choose for anyone who'd like to see Turkey with a team that ensures quality, excellence and expertise. "

How did you get involved in travel?

"During my MA studies in Archaeology and History of Art, I had the opportunity of touring around Turkey with knowledgable art historians. During that time I was lucky enough to see excavation sites, out of the ordinary places that made me realize I'd like people all around the world to see and appreciate the beauty of Turkey. "

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"I will never forget the first time I saw a Hittite monument called Eflatunpınar, near Beyşehir in Turkey, on an off-track road that one wouldn't expect to find something historically amazing. Eflatunpınar dates back to the 13th century BC, and is a rectangular shaped pond fed with the waters from a nearby spring. I remember that the sound of water that was still running from the same source since centuries, the quiet and serenity of the site filled me with a sense of peace and awe at the same time. Turkey is a country filled with these kind of special gems in unassuming places. You just need fresh eyes to appreciate the things you see and let yourself be surprised. "

We especially appreciate both guides’ flexibility to change some venues when we say we were more interested in architecture and visiting small villages to seeing more Christian paintings and churches in caves. We appreciate that. All in all the planning by KimKim’s team made our trip memorable and the transportation seamless.

Hotel Reviews
Armada Hotel
Istanbul

Wonderful location, ease of access via walking to the historical areas of Istanbul. Breakfast spread so much variety and delicious

Authenticity & Character
Love the antique pieces shown in the lobby around the hotel. Its quiet and clean. Love the view from the hotel terrace- awesome view of the waterfront and the Blue Mosque!!
Location
Perfect location, near the waterfront near the historical district and so many restaurants, also close to a well known hammam
Staff
Very nice and helpful, helped us with our bags too
Cleanliness & Comfort
Our room, the lobby area and the restaurant.
Kale Konak Hotel

It is a lovely cave hotel at the topmost part of Cappodacia. Our room was beautifully appointed and surprisingly very comfortable. Cool in the heat and warm at night. Plenty of lights as there are no windows. The only negative was the deep steps, as its an ancient site, the steps were difficult for us as older people to handle going up and down to get to our room.

Authenticity & Character
It is an authentic cave hotel, there is also a meditation/Turkish room with pillows for us to lie and read. Its lovely.
Location
It is located just across from the famous cave formation called the Castle.however pretty far from most restaurants in the area. We had limited choices where to eat in the evening as the hotel only served breakfast which were plentiful, sumptuous and very delicious. Luckily our guide would take us to nice restaurants before dropping us off for the day.
Staff
The hostess is a lovely young lady who made sure our breakfast was served promptly as soon as we arrived. She was very warm and friendly.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The room was very clean and the room made up daily.

Loved visiting the spice and the Grand Bazaar. I liked that our guide took us to the spice market the first day as its smaller and to acquaint us to “bazaars” then the Grand Bazaar which can be a bit overwhelming with its size but we only chose a few “streets” as we had specific things we wanted to buy. We also visited the oldest Turkish delight candy store, visited Rustum mosque with its beautiful blue tiles, and went on a boat tour on the Bosphorus to see both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul which fascinated us. It was a wonderful ending to a lovely tour to just sit on the boat, relax and drink tea seeing the sights. Highly recommend to end with that as we were a bit foot weary by then.

Quality of Experience
As explained above, we get to see bits of history in the places we visited, we even had lunch at the famous Pudding House, delicious food- very authentic Turkish which we appreciate. We even visited an old notable cemetery. Fascinated at the different approach to burials. Fascinating

Our guide was amazing navigate us to places on the route.
Transport
We took the tram then walked back to our hotel. Not a complicated route. Our landmark was The Blue Mosque which is nice.

It was interesting at first but then seeing more sacred art in different caves became a bit tiring also, it's all uphill on a very hot day. We opted to stop sooner and did not see the rest. I realize we are not Christians and do not feel much affinity toward the paintings. But for Christians and those who love sacred art, seeing these in unusual places, the caves and the fact that these exist for your viewing is spectacular.

When asked our guide we want to stop and not continue, he was flexible and took us to other interesting small villages. We ate lunch at a favorite restaurant of our guide. The Turkish food was excellent, what a coincidence, the owner's aunts and grandfather was Deaf and he signed with me. I was able to chat a bit with one of his aunts via videophone. It was so cool.
Transport
Our driver was sweet and took us through small roads and to see interesting sights like the potato depots, an abandoned village, and a sweet little village where we had lunch. It was wonderful.

We loved trying our hand at creating pottery at the wheel. The guide at the pottery shop explained the process and also the famous ring wine of the Hittites. We loved learning about the history of this art and seeing all the beautiful ceramics. We immensely enjoyed the time spent there. We visited Love Valley and walked a bit, took some pictures then had delicious pistachio coffee for the first time. We sat and enjoyed the view from the cafe. I enjoy seeing the colored ceramic jars decorating the trees instead of "love locks" these are "jars of love and wishes" makes great and fascinating travel pictures.

Quality of Experience
Love seeing the natural formations, it continues to give me awe when I see them, I could stay and stare at what nature made.

The flexibility of our guide to follow and let us be.
Transport
The flexibility of our driver to get us to places. He was mostly inconspicuous out of respect but I kept asking him to join us. He was so sweet too.

We have never seen anything like this so it was so fascinating to watch the dancing. I am truly impressed that they were able to twirl continuously and in sync with each other with closed eyes!! I did try and oh boy, was I dizzy and off balance, especially when trying to close my eyes too. It takes years of training and skill!! We enjoy learning about different traditions, culture, clothing, food and customs etc. this one fits the bill. We enjoyed learning about the history of this place too and visiting the room with the beautiful lamps, so magical.

Quality of Experience

I appreciate the fact that they are willing to share a bit of their tradition with us. Our guide sharing about the history of the caravanserai- part of a trading post on the silk road- wow, we are standing on a bit of history!

Love visiting and seeing the landscape and the formations for the first time- I was in awe!! I could not believe my eyes and had to keep looking to see new formations, shapes, and the impossible concept of a heavy rock balanced on a precarious top. It is otherworldly! I was also fascinated to see a police station inside one of the formations! So cool!!

Quality of Experience
It is awesome to see what nature has formed.

Our guide's explanations in how the rocks came to be, he is so knowledgeable also about the flora too. Enjoyed that very much.

The set up is so romantic. Enjoyed the red Turkish wine, so smooth and delicious and the snacks really complements it. This trip was for our 45th wedding anniversary so it made it all the more special. Love the views too. Then we noticed the sky darken, true enough it started to rain suddenly, we all ran into our van. It was so funny. We never got to see the sun set but it emulates our wedding. it rained heavily the morning of our outdoor wedding. We went ahead and then it stopped raining and the sun came out when it was time for our wedding. Wow, we see it as a sign of good luck. So, when it rained on our wedding anniversary romantic sunset event, we see it as a good omen that good days are ahead. Smile.

Wow, just wow! Imagine people having to live underground for days!! I do have a phobia of small spaces so I am proud of myself for forging ahead and visit. It was worth it! Learned so much and how ingenious people back then were in creating a living space for their animals, themselves, making wine, kitchen and even a church. How they close those spaces with those heavy circular rocks!! I am very impressed. I am also impressed with myself for being able to navigate through those narrow tunnels!!

It was a very hot day, we asked if we can forego this activity instead our guide took us to the village of Ayvali and Mustafapha which are very, very special and well worth our time. We visited a traditional Turkish restaurant, had a lovely lunch and met the owner who knew sign language. It was fun to converse with him and with his Deaf aunt via videophone. We also got to watch a small village election for a mayor. The changing of the flags for each party, etc It was fascinating to watch for a while. We also asked for a few hours on our own. We went browsing among the shops near our hotel. We got to watch a master Tuff carver create beautiful formations like we see in the landscape. We enjoyed chatting with some shop owners, learned about Zultanite stones, wow. And just sit in a cafe, and enjoy the views.

Quality of Experience
We chose what we wanted to do and our guide was flexible to find alternatives which we appreciate.

Hagia Sophia has an interesting history we learned from our guide, Zekiye, also the Hippodrome, the scupltures in the area and some buildings have an interesting history. We also visited a carpet store and learned how they made rugs. Fascinating too.

Quality of Experience

It was an interesting and beautiful palace. We learned so much about palace and harem living and dispelled some myths originally thought. We did not visit all the museums but saw most of it as we were tired and a bit hungry by then. We appreciated our guide being flexible. We did watch the palace guards band which was a nice way to see a sort of reenactment as it was in the olden days.

Quality of Experience
Seeing how the people worked and lived, including politics, harem living, guards’ responsibilities etc.

It was wonderful not to worry about the logistics; everything from domestic flights and private transfers to hotel accommodations was arranged for us.

All three of our guides were amazing. Zekiye showed us around Istanbul for two days, providing interesting historical and local context along the way while being incredibly personable. From historic sites like the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace to a trip across the Bosphorus to Kadikoy, we were able to experience many different sides of Istanbul. Efe spent two days with us in Cappadocia and took great care of us, facilitating fun and engaging visits to Kaymakli Underground City, Goreme Open Air Museum, and a local pottery shop in Avanos. Finally, Ozan took us to Ephesus for the day and even showed us around a bit of Izmir near our hotel. He brought great energy to the Ephesus tour and was very knowledgeable about the site's history.

We would definitely recommend the KimKim team to anyone traveling to Turkey! Turkey is a beautiful county, and we are already discussing when we can return for another visit.

Every communication, every driver, every guide and all reservations were perfectly on time and professional. Ground transportation was clean and high quality. Each of our guides were terrific - Volkan in Istanbul, Burcu in Ephesus/Laodicea/Pamukkale, Yakup in Antalya, and Sumer (Efe) in Cappadocia. Hotels were all unique from each other and consistently nice. In-country flights were super easy and on time. Food in Turkey is terrific, though somewhat limited for vegetarians. Our guides went out of their way to help us find places that had good vege options. We really felt that we were given the best tour of Turkey that 13 days could allow. This was definitely not an inexpensive trip, but the quality of everything and the professionalism of this team made it feel like we absolutely got our money's worth! We really loved Turkey! This was a great trip, well planned! We wanted to explore Turkey with our 9- and 11-year-old kids, but were a bit anxious about all the domestic flights and road trips on top of the transatlantic flights. Berat worked with us to take some locations off the itinerary and add others based on our preferences, and gave us knowledgeable insights that helped us make decisions. We tailored the trip to our wishes and our kids' stamina, and we had an incredible time. Turkey is a beautiful country, very accessible, and its people were very welcoming.

Our local guides (Zekiye, Ozan, and Efe) took us through sites in three different regions with just the right amount of historical and cultural information. They were great with our kids, sensitive to how ambitious we chose to be on any given day. Our drivers were all prompt and friendly. We received almost daily WhatsApp communications from Murat, one of our trip planners, with reminders about our itinerary and helpful information, which were greatly appreciated.

At times during the trip planning process, communication was slow, with us waiting several days for replies to questions. Ultimately, this was not a problem, because we planned our itinerary well in advance. But even so, we had a few minor surprise alterations to the trip on the ground, which might have been avoided by better communication. These were small things (one site visit moved to another day; a bike ride deemed too ambitious for our kids despite a conversation about it weeks earlier). Our planners and guides shuffled our schedule and found replacement items very efficiently, and none of this deteriorated from the trip in the end. Still, some momentary confusion for us and a little disappointment for our kids might have been avoided. None of this is a major criticism. We had a terrific trip and would recommend Berat and her whole team of planners and guides.

Nur Beach Hotel

We were here in the off-season, and it seemed to us that the hotel was completing some renovations and/or was not quite ready for the busy season. Little things were off: the pool wasn't ready, the wifi didn't work, our room's safe didn't work, the balcony door had no lock on it. These small items did not ruin our stay, however. Because the hotel was far from at-capacity, they graciously upgraded our room to a larger one with an extraordinary view, and provided rollaway beds for our kids.

Truly a magical mountain hideaway. Rustic design and charm from another era, but with hidden, modern updates to make the stay comfortable. One of the best morning views we've ever had. Very friendly staff and good food.

A great experience with my guide Efe and driver Musa.
I liked how flexible they were—we sometimes switched the order of our stops so we could avoid rain/tour buses, etc and also added stops when time became available. All being previously discussed, of course.
Thank you to both Efe and Musa!

Our tour arrangers were exceptionally responsive - Murat and Hulya helped coordinate for us when we were in Turkey and were incredible - our messages were meticulously detailed with our itinerary, driver information and flight info. They went above and beyond to take care of us- when I left my Kindle at a hotel - they coordinated with our driver and guide in the next city to retrieve that item for me so I could have it in hand before I left Turkey. Similarly, when the weather was not looking good for our hot air balloon flight in Capadoccia, they rearranged our itinerary so that we could go on our flight the day before - and it was SO memorable! Our tour guides - Emre, Ozan and Efe - were all so knowledgeable, hospitable, and professional - Ozan especially enriched our experience and helped us fall in love with Turkey. All of the drivers and tour vans were exceptional - my friends and I had never ridden in such comfortable tour vehicles (they had refrigerators in the car for water). All of the hotel accommodations were comfortable - Berat made sure we each had our own beds in each hotel. Amongst all of them - we LOVED the Kale Kona Hotel - we hope to return there one day, it was an amazing place. We hope to return to Turkey with KimKim one day to go to other places we have not seen yet.

Furniture, decorations, setup were all so special - there was a private terrace with dining table attached to room - the door to the cave hotel looked like it was from the Ottoman Empire, incredible!

Breakfast was simply outstanding every morning - fresh, hot items were brought out to us along with some classic Turkish breakfast items every morning - and were beautifully presented. On the morning we left, they prepared boxed breakfast lunches with homemade sandwiches for us - overall we felt extremely well cared for here.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Beds were comfortable and rooms were spotlessly clean
