Irene Lappa

Growing up as an only child, I learned early the value of connection — with people, places, and cultures. Thanks to my parents' love for road trips, my childhood was filled with unexpected friendships, ancient sites, hidden trails, and breathtaking coastlines.

Those early experiences shaped my deep appreciation for cultural understanding and the lasting impact of meaningful travel. Today, after many journeys of my own, I feel truly fortunate to design personalized travel experiences and share the joy of discovery with others.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I specialize in curating journeys throughout Italy and Greece — destinations rich in culture, breathtaking landscapes, authenticity, and exceptional wine and gastronomy.

My focus is on crafting refined, immersive experiences that strike a thoughtful balance between meaningful exploration, relaxation, and indulgence. Each itinerary is designed with intention, allowing travelers to connect with local history and traditions while enjoying the pleasures of elegant travel and fine living."

How did you get involved in travel?

"Travel has always been a part of my life in one way or another. But the true journey began when I made the bold decision to leave behind my career as an assistant director in the Greek film industry and give myself permission to start fresh — to reimagine my path with clarity and intention.

Starting from scratch, I asked myself some fundamental questions: What do I truly want to do? What would bring me joy every single day? What do I know and love? The answer came naturally: I love travel. I love art & culture. I love wine. I have some knowledge in each — and a deep passion for discovering them and sharing the experience with others. That was the turning point.

I began formal studies in both tourism and wine, and while still studying, I was offered a role at a travel agency designing tailor-made journeys for independent travelers. It was a revelation — I absolutely loved it.

Years later, after continued studies in wine - an endlessly fascinating field - and countless travel experiences, I truly feel at home in what I do. I'm proud to be part of the Travel 12 team, where we share a deep passion for travel and a commitment to creating truly unique, life-changing experiences for our travelers."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"In 2010, after wrapping up a demanding 120-day film project, I realized I needed something more than just rest — I needed time for myself. Time to unwind, reflect, and reconnect with what truly mattered to me. So, I took a ferry to one of my favorite places in Greece: the island of Crete.

What began as a solo road trip across a vast island with long, winding roads turned into a transformative two-month journey. Though I had visited Crete many times before, this experience was different. I met inspiring people, discovered hidden gems far from the beaten path, and — most importantly — uncovered two life-changing truths: while I still deeply loved films as an art form, I no longer liked the lifestyle of working in the film industry; and second, that even I was traveling solo, I never felt truly alone.
A year later, I had stepped onto an entirely new path — immersed in new studies, a renewed daily rhythm, and, ultimately finding myself in a place of purpose and genuine happiness."

Irene did an amazing job or organizing our trip. Travel was seamless, getting from airport to train station to scheduled tours.
I would have to say Florence was my favorite part of the trip. It was a bit more laid back and less crowded. We really enjoyed our cooking class!
Anna, our tour guide for Pompeii was wonderful. Very informative and easy to talk to.
Kathy, our guide for the Colosseum did a fantastic job. Showing us Palatine hill (which we were not even aware of) and showing us the history of the city and ending the tour with the colosseum.
Such a special and memorable trip.

Dear Kim Kim,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share some feedback regarding our recent trip, as this vacation is incredibly meaningful to my husband and me. It serves as our yearly honeymoon — a special time for us to reconnect, especially since we both work in law enforcement and rarely have time away together.

First, I want to express my appreciation for your attentiveness and professionalism throughout the planning process. However, I don’t feel that my preferences and expectations were not fully understood or reflected in some parts of the trip.

Our hotel in Athens was nice in terms of accommodations, but the lack of concierge service was a major disappointment for us. Personalized service and assistance are very important elements of our travel experience. While the hotel staff were friendly and welcoming, the absence of a concierge made it difficult to navigate the area and arrange activities smoothly.

We also encountered an issue with our tour guides in Athens. There was some confusion about our meeting location, and the guide became upset and raised her voice when we didn’t meet her outside as she expected — we had been waiting just downstairs. While this was uncomfortable, I do want to acknowledge that she was very knowledgeable and that the remainder of the tour went well.

A more serious issue occurred when departing to Egypt. We learned from the airline that our travel agent should have verified that our passports were compliant for our destination. Unfortunately, my husband’s passport was not accepted initially because it expires in April 2026, leading to a 12-hour delay. We made multiple calls and sent messages but received no response. After pleading with the airline, they finally allowed us to continue our travel. By the time we arrived in Egypt, it was 3:45 a.m., and we reached the hotel around 5:45 a.m. Our scheduled day tour at 8 a.m. had to be postponed to 11 a.m., causing us to miss several experiences. This situation created a domino effect that impacted a significant portion of our trip.

On a positive note, our time in Santorini was absolutely wonderful. The hotel, staff, and tour guides there exceeded our expectations and made that part of our trip truly memorable.

I’m sharing this feedback because we truly value these annual trips, and with a few adjustments, future experiences could be exceptional from start to finish. I would appreciate any follow-up or resolution you can offer, particularly regarding the passport issue and the missed portions of our tours.

Thank you again for your time, and I look forward to your response.

Warm regards,
Racquel Gil

Had I realized earlier that concierge support was important to you, I would have suggested a different hotel. Regarding the guide in Athens, I want to reassure you that this was an isolated incident, and I have already addressed it with the local team.
Concerning the major issue you encountered while departing for Egypt, I completely understand how upsetting that experience must have been, and I’m truly sorry for the stress it caused and for the activities you were unable to enjoy as a result. Looking back, I realize I should have asked you to check the visa and entry requirements for Egypt before booking the flights on your behalf, rather than assuming this had already been taken care of. I will certainly keep this in mind for future planning.
I sincerely hope that these challenges did not overshadow your overall experience and that you returned home with many beautiful memories from your time in both Greece and Egypt.
All the best,
Irene

This is our third KimKim adventure. It was the first time we rented a car to possibly have more flexibility. Everything was smooth when we landed in Athens and hopped to Crete. We were met but Kosta from Kosmos car rental and got a new car (but the windshield washer did not work). Off to Rethymno and we realized how Greeks drive. The double yellow lines in the center of the road is merely a suggestion. After a while driving went from unnerving to terrifying. Our hotel in old town Rethymno was lovely and so were the people there. We know you recommended staying in Chania and Heraklion and we elected to stay in Rethymno. We wish that you had persuaded us and said something about Greek drivers. As it was, we eliminated trips to Elafonisi beach and other places. We went to a beautiful beach Skinaria, the drive through the gorge was beautiful. The last leg of the drive to the beach was again terrifying. It really put a damper on our beach trips. We take some responsibility as you did warn us that it was 2.5 hours to Elafonisi. The tour of the Palace of Knossos was fabulous and Viv is a great tour guide. The museum was amazing. The hotel was nice and the people very friendly and helpful. The room was OK but we read that room 106 has a balcony and that would have been nicer.
Our tour of Chania with Petros was very good too. Parking was very challenging but manageable.
Athens was great. The Elysium was a beautiful venue for dinner with a perfect view of the Parthenon. The hotel was delightful. The car pick up was perfectly convenient and getting out of Athens was surprisingly easy. Hearing about the marathon scheduled for that day made us apprehensive but not a problem. Also it was nice to have a hotel with an elevator.
Nafplio; the drive was straightforward but after our experiences in Crete we were nervous and omitted some of the planned drives. The Athena hotel in Nafplio is beautiful with a nice room at the top floor. Of course, 70 stairs from the lobby to our room carrying heavy bags was not top of my list of exercises. I am 71 years old. I suppose I should have checked into that.
On our last KimKim adventure (Portugal) we thought about renting a car but then changed our minds. I wish we had done it differently on the trip.

If you are healthy enough to take a lot of stairs (70) then try for the rooftop room. Amazing views to the castle, the city and the harbor. If you are not in the best of shape, the stairs can be a lot. There is no elevator. Also, we could have used a better description of the location as we drove right past it using GPS. There is no parking at the hotel but you can briefly park 10 meters away. Parking is touch and go. There are parking lots and if you are lucky you can get a place not too far from the hotel.

Dear Stanley,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. As I was surprised to read some of the points you mentioned, I would like to offer a few clarifications.
Considering that this was your second trip to Greece with us, and given that you had driven here before, the self-drive option was discussed as a way to offer flexibility and manage costs effectively. I therefore did not expect that this would cause difficulties during your journey. Regarding the car rental issue, had our team been informed while you were traveling, we would have gladly intervened to help resolve the matter.
As for Nafplio, it is one of Greece’s most beautiful medieval towns. During the planning process, we discussed that centrally located accommodations, while offering close access to points of interest and lovely views, lack elevators due to the town’s traditional architecture. Since having scenic views was a priority, and you approved the option I suggested, I understood that you were comfortable with it.
I sincerely hope that despite these inconveniences, you enjoyed discovering the beauty of Greece’s regions and that your trip left you with beautiful memories overall.
All the best,
Irene

Cleanliness & Comfort
Only complaint was a leaky shower. otherwise everything that we needed. Free water would have been helpful though!
Veneto Boutique Hotel
Rethymno, Crete

Lovely boutique hotel. Sadly my husband dropped his wedding ring down the drain in the bathroom floor we believe. No insurance. Food was excellent and service top notch as well, including the concierge, the wine and barista, and housekeeping. But the star of the show for me were the breakfasts and the wonderful lady(s) in charge!!!!

Authenticity & Character
The historic preservation. So many amenities.

Staff
The Concierges and the lady who was part of the waitstaff that managed the wines.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Clean and comfortable and the room was surprisingly large!

No one warned us to be careful about the gasoline. We chose a station that seemed to be a common station with a midpoint cost. An hour after filling up we had a check engine light come on in the middle of no where. Very stressful. There was no manual about the car in the glove box. We thought we were about to have an engine failure. Very upsetting! The car itself was pretty old and a bit beaten up.

Dear Pam and Stan,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. I truly appreciate your detailed comments and the opportunity to learn from your experience, especially as I know how thoughtful and attentive you are.

Dear Pam and Stan,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. I truly appreciate your detailed comments and the opportunity to learn from your experience, especially as I know how thoughtful and attentive you are.
I’m sorry about the issue you faced with the car and the gasoline, it must have been stressful. From my experience both as a driver in Greece and as a travel advisor organizing many self-drive trips, this appears to have been an isolated and unfortunate case of poor-quality fuel, rather than something common or predictable.
As for the car itself, had I or our 24/7 Traveler Care team been informed at the time, we would have immediately contacted the rental company to request a replacement vehicle and assist you on the spot.
In any case, I completely understand how unsettling this must have felt and hope it didn’t take away from your overall enjoyment of Greece. Thank you again for your feedback and for trusting me with your trip.
I wish you all the best and many safe journeys ahead.

I elected on this trip to use kimkim rather than book things myself as I generally do. It was a very good decision. Irene curated an excellent 16 day tour of Tuscany and the Italian Riviera. Their partner in Italy, Travel 12 was very responsive to any questions that surfaced during the trip. One example, there was a rail strike on the last day of our trip. Travel 12 researched and rebooked us on a train that would not be impacted by the strike. Irene and I had numerous exchanges about the itinerary, she listened to my needs and crafted a truly outstanding experience. Her intimate knowledge of the area was particularly helpful in finalizing our itinerary. Every driver was either on time or early and extremely professional. The tours, particularly the Uffizi, the city walking tours, the Brunello winery tour and Cinque Terre tour were outstanding. All private and all with outstanding guides. Finally, I feel pretty certain that due to kimkim's and Travel 12's relationships with hotels and local tour operators that we received the best rooms and guides. I highly recommend both Irene and their local partner Travel 12 if you are planning a trip to Italy.

We are both wine lovers, and the Brunello winery tour was fantastic. We visited two wineries and had an amazing private lunch at Violetta which was one of the best meals we had on our entire trip. Our guide added a bonus, a short visit to Pienza which we both wanted to see and certainly appreciated his flexibility.
