Ngima Dorji Sherpa

Ngima has been running his trekking company out of Kathmandu since the mid-90s. He specializes in treks and adventure travel in Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. His work in the travel industry has enabled him to visit many countries across the world, including the United States, England, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, Austria, and The Netherlands.

In addition to being a successful travel entrepreneur, Ngima has initiated and implemented several charitable projects in his village, including founding 2 schools, a Tibetan monastery, and a hospital. Ngima was born in Kharikola, a village on the classic trail to Everest, and now lives with his wife and 2 sons in Kathmandu, Nepal.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I’ve arranged numerous trips throughout Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, but I’m most familiar with the Solu Khumbu where I grew up, obviously. I know the trails, peaks and villages around there very well. Most trekkers opt to fly into the Everest region and miss out on the secret gems that lie on the trail between Jiri and Lukla.

I specialize mainly in trekking and mountaineering, but also organize a number of charity and community projects in the Solu Khumbu that specialize in bringing medical supplies to local villages. We have also been working on a project to connect foreign students with local schools in the area. And since the earthquake in 2015, we’ve been helping repair the homes of villagers around the village I grew up in, Kharikhola. I’m excited about helping people have local, authentic experiences."

How did you get involved in travel?

"When I was ten years old, Sir Edmund Hillary came to the Solu Khumbu, near where I was born, to help fund a school. Inspired by his visit, I enrolled as a porter in Lukla, and eventually moved to Kathmandu to join my uncle’s trekking business. In 1991, I spent three months in the U.K. which improved my English and motivated me to enrol in a guiding course and start guiding for a Dutch company operating out of Summit hotel in Kathmandu. Finally, I started my own agency - Nepal Myths and Mountains Trails - in 1996 and have been running that ever since."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"When I was a porter, at that time, we didn’t have any shoes while carrying our heavy loads. Everyone around us was wearing comfortable shoes and socks, of course. At the end of one of our treks up to Everest Base Camp, a couple French members in our group left us each with a great pair of hiking boots that lasted for years to come. A small act of kindness, sure, but it made all the difference to my feet for the next 3 years! "

Is It Safe to Visit Nepal After the 2015 Earthquake?

In May 2015, Nepal was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Many travelers are still wondering if it's safe to visit Nepal. The short answer is "yes". The earthquake has caused severe damage in certain regions, but the country is rebuilding and open for travel.

In Kathmandu area, we loved discovering the Newari culture and the town of Bhaktapur the most. Pohkara was also lots of fun and walking the trails in Nagarkot was nice too. Knowing our interest for genuine local food our local guide, Kamaal, took us to several tiny local food outlets we would hv never found on our own. We just loved it.
We did not stray far from main areas this time, and we also enjoyed the white water rafting with a fun team. Next time we intend to explore other areas farther afield, with kimkim of course!

The overall planning and booking experience with KimKim was excellent except the first appointment call. When I showed my interesting in KimKim trip, I was asked to book a 15min time slot to talk to a local (California) person. And I found this person has no value added. I asked many questions in the call and none was answered. I would have given a 5 stars if there is no such an annoy call.

The KimKim payment and communication system are very convenient. All the communications and attachment are well kept in the system and easy to read. The response from Ngima is incredibly fast and accurate. Nigma answered our questions with patient and with no nonsense. His expertise and knowledge provided me a trustworthy feeling.

KimKim assigned a local driver Lhakpa to us. Lhakpa has very fluent English. Lhakpa drove us to and from airport and also during our sightseeing tours in Kathmandu. He gave us a very nice overall introduction of Nepal and Kathmandu. He was also a good photographer and knew the "should not miss" photography spots.

The most important person in this trip is no doubt our Sherpa guide, Furba. I would like to show my deepest appreciation to him to make this trip safe and memorable. He is responsible, knowledgeable, and considerate. He spotted wild animals to us, for example Himalayan tahr. He pointed and named every peaks to us during the entire trip. Due to the unstable weather, he had to modify our itinerary from day to day to optimize the trip. He also tried his best to accommodate all our requests during the entire trip. For example, we requested to have single rooms for both of us. He told us in some remote village the availability is very limited and because of the high demand, a single supplement might not possible, but he will do his best. At the end, we had single supplement on every nights in our trip. Furba has done an excellent job.

The last person I would to mention is our porter, Lhakpa. He has taken good care of our luggage, especially during a few raining days.

The mountain scenery is the best in the world. The images of the peaks, Mt Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Cholatse, Tabuche, etc., are imprinted in my brain. However, the most critical part of this trip is the persons provided the service to you. Thank you again for the persons I mentioned above.

We also spent the evenings teaching each other card games and we had a lot of fun. Our guide throughout the trek to Namche Bazaar and back Pengba was exceptional in his knowledge of the trails and the lodging spots. Since we were first time trekkers he helped us in pacing our trek and made sure we were sufficiently hydrated and had on time meals throughout the journey. The lodges that he selected at Monjo and Choplung had all the necessary facilities with great food. Our porter for the trek Ang Babu was extremely helpful. He used to speed ahead with our luggage and then come back and help us through the trek especially the tricky ascents and descents made more difficult by the frost. Thanks to Ngima for all his suggestions during the planning of the trip and it was finally great meeting him on our day of departure. Ngima Dorji Sherpa was always able to quickly answer our questions and provided us with flexible booking options which led to us taking a private trek at only a little extra cost.

We were well looked after from the moment we were met at Kathmandu airport. Dafuri was a wonderful guide. He quickly summed up our walking experience and interests and was able to take us through the Three Passes without mishap and with a few extra side trips thrown in as well. I particularly enjoyed the day walk we had from Chukhung to Island Peak Base Camp via Imja Tsho - the lake that is forming behind terminal moraines and which could catastrophically fail and lead to severe flooding downstream.

I also enjoyed our two nights at Gokyo with a walk up Gokyo Ri on a perfect sunny afternoon followed by a day walk beside Ngozumba Glacier to Gyazumba where there are wonderful views of Cho Oyo, Everest, Makalu and everything in between. We crossed Renjo La the next day. What a feast!

So thank you Dafuri for your strength, good humour and expert knowledge of the track and accommodation options. We also enjoyed learning from you about Nepalese customs and society. Bimba, you were also so strong and helpful.

Our trekking trip to Nepal was a wonderful experience and we cannot thank enough Ngima and his team for making it such a success.

As soon we landed at Kathmandu, we've been very well taken care of by Lapka, who helped us with transportation pick-ups and preparation of our EBC trekking trip The day before the start of our trek, Ngima came to our hotel (along with our trek guide) to do a detailed briefing of our trekking trip and logistics making sure that we're comfortable with everything. And btw, the SUV arranged from Ngima's company for our land-transfer/transportation is a pretty new vehicle, which was nice because due to the Kathmandu local airport maintenance, the flight to Lukla (starting point of our EBC trek) can't be from Kathmandu but Ramechapp instead, which is 4hrs drive away on windy, sometimes a bit rugged, mountain roads.

On the trek, our guide Angolo took care of us very well. We have some relatively heavy camera equipments (lenses and such) and he helped with carrying those in his back pack all along, and even carried my wife's backpack when she wasn't feeling too well one day.
After the trekking, we spent a couple more days in Kathmandu to unwind. And before we leave to the airport, Ngima came to our hotel for de-brief of our trip before dropping us off to the airport

Overall we are very satisfied with the trip and I would highly recommend Ngima to whoever wants to arrange a trekking trip in Nepal!

My guide (Da Furi Sherpa) and porter were both experienced and friendly and were a great support, especially on the steep and sometimes slippery descents. Of the three passes, the Kongma La Pass was definitely the most challenging, though this may in part been due to the fact it was the first pass we did and I was not as acclimatized. I would highly recommend this trek to anyone looking for a challenging trek in Nepal.

We highly recommend KimKim (with Nepal Myths & Mountain Trails) for trekking in Nepal. Our guides, Tashi and Ang Gelu, did a top-notch job in safely and comfortably guiding us on our 5-day family trek to Ghorepani and Poon Hill. These two guides were personable and complemented each other well (Ang Gelu knew the villages and trek a little better, but Tashi knew more English). It was clear that they had much experience hiking in Nepal and in the Annapurna region. We felt secure in their hands.

Our original plan had been Pikey Peak, but a mudslide on the road forced us to change plans before we even arrived at the trailhead. Ngima's team (Nepal Myths & Mountain Trails) correctly assessed the situation, discussed options with us, and recommended the alternate plan (Ghorepani + rafting) that we agreed with.

Even though we chose to go during monsoon season, we were lucky in that the weather was good enough for us to get great views of the Annapurna range from multiple locations, including Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Tadapani, and Ghandruk!

Trekking in the Himalayas was more physically challenging than I expected, primarily due to the prolonged steepness, and when my knees and thighs were not quite up to the task, Tashi and Ang Gelu were there to help carry my backpack, which made a huge difference. However, our group did get separated once when some of us got too far ahead, but it ended up being a merely temporary inconvenience due to the skills and knowledge of our guides.

Ngima and his team were very flexible in letting us stay an extra day in Pokhara so that we could see some of the sights there before heading back to Kathmandu. They also arranged a white-water rafting trip after we had to turn back from Pikey Peak in just a single day, which was definitely a highlight. Their ability to set up this whole trip for us was impressive.

We had fun playing cards with our guides during the evenings in the tea houses, as well as meeting other travelers from around the world. The trek was very comfortable, and we had ample time in the evenings to relax.

From the planning perspective Ngima and his Sons were outstanding, making sure we were picked up from the airpot, shown where to rent & purchase trekking equipment and in my case taken to the airport twice when there was trouble with my flight. Communications leading up to the trip were clear, prompt and informative.

For the trek itself Ang Gelu was attentive and patient with us and clearly showed his professionalism and experience. We always felt safe and well cared for. Gelu was also flexible when we decided we wanted to stay longer at higher altitude. Kunga constantly greeted us with a smile and carried our bags to our door. When we weren’t trekking, both of them made sure we were well fed, comfortable and always had hot tea when we wanted it.

The trek itself was fantastic. We were worried at the start since there was a day and a half section on a road under development (on which, the government forbids tourists transportation). That being said, once you’re past it, it’s pure bliss and awe. I’m hard pressed to pick a favorite section as the whole thing varies with each elevation specific layer of ecosystem. All I can say is I would absolutely recommend it. I already have many times!

Ngima's coordination of hotels, in-country flights, guides, drivers, trekking, and cultural tours were invaluable.

In Nepal, we did a day of sightseeing in Kathmandu to see Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Patan Durbar Square. Our guide in Kathmandu, Kedar, was outstanding: incredibly informative, kind, and obviously well-known and liked by many in the city (everywhere we went he was greeting and shaking hands with other tour guides)! We learned a lot and would recommend all first-comers to Nepal to experience Kathmandu with a guide. The driver organized by Ngima was also wonderful and made moving around the city easy.

After sightseeing, we departed from Pokhara for the Poon Hill Trek. We were accompanied by Chhongba (guide) and Dawa (porter). Both of them ensured all our needs were well taken care of. At times, Chhongba seemed a bit checked out and spent a large amount of time on his cell phone. (Cell service appears uninterrupted for Nepalis with national coverage along this trek, which is great for safety but hearing the guides’ YouTube videos and music at teahouses took away from our desire to disconnect.) Chhongba was willing to answer the questions we asked him, but he offered relatively little information on his own. Next time we would advocate to cover more miles per day; we ended up at the teahouses and in Pokhara by 1pm the last three days of the trek and would have liked to spend more time walking each day. The trek is BEAUTIFUL, and we enjoyed every minute on the trail. Overall, Chhongba and Dawa were kind and helpful on our trek and they allowed us to relax and not worry about the details. We had a stressful exit from Nepal due to delays on Yeti airlines, and Chhongba, Lakpa (Ngima's son), and driver in Kathmandu were essential to helping us make our international flight in time.

Overall, it was a great experience!! We will highly recommend kimkim, NMMT and Nepal to friends and family. We will definitely be back to do another trek (hopefully Everest Base Camp) and would book with kimkim and Ngima again.

I did a Poon Hill + Annapurna Sanctuary trek, travelling alone (besides my guide and porter). Incidentally, this was my first trekking experience. Prior to my trip, Ngima was very prompt in helping me craft (and re-craft a couple of times) an itinerary that suited what I wanted, as well as answering any queries I might have. He helped made planning for my trip as stress-free as it could possibly get, while still retaining autonomy over my plans.
A typical day on the trek involved walking (that is, climbing up and down) through varied scenery, from lush bamboo forests to mountain-flanked snowfields, stopping for a leisurely mid-morning tea and lunch along the way. Most days, we reached our resting lodge for the night by around 3pm, and the rest of the day was spent relaxing, reading, chatting with fellow travellers, all over a pot of brewed tea. It is worth pointing out that I went in winter, meaning the flowers are not in bloom, but, in my opinion, that is more than made up for by the fact that there is a smaller crowd on the trails and in the lodges. The visual highlights of the trek are undoubtedly the 7000s-8000s giants, whether they be shyly peeking out from behind lesser mountains (or hills, as they call them in Nepal), laid out in a stunning vista at Poonhill, or subsequently transformed into a panoramic amphitheatre at Annapurna Base Camp. For an urbanite like me, the chance to slow down one’s pace, escape from the bustle and grind – not to mention digital spam – of city life, and just live in the moment, all the while soaking in nature, was incredibly rejuvenating.
Credit must also go to my guide Pemba and my porter Pasang, who attended to my every need – voiced or otherwise (requests for extra blankets, tea and meal orders etc). Importantly, I did not once felt rushed, Pemba encouraging me to take my time, set my own pace and just enjoy the journey. (Too many trekkers seemed to forget to do just that, too focussed as they were on the endpoint.) Pemba has also been very helpful in customising the itinerary on the fly based on the pace we were making. Besides all these, through the chats we had, and their easy-going, quick-to-laugh nature, I felt I had experienced a bit of Nepali culture and Sherpa warmth and good cheer. Pemba and Pasang have grown to be friends to me, whom I hope to trek with again in future.

All in all It was a fantastic trip, and I’m very satisfied with your help during planning and the flexibility you were giving by changing one night from Kathmandu to Balthali. That change gave the highlight of the tour, Namobuddha and Balthali plus hike to Balthali. Great day.

Nagarkot itself was beautiful, but the hike from Sankhu was very disappointing.

Nice warm up thru the rice fields. Splendid ending with Mountain View’s in Nagarkot. But nothing to see and experience on the was. Just a dusty road that could have been anywhere. No nature, no views and nothing to experience.

To compare, our walk last 2 km to Balthali was amazing all the way. Nature, bridge, village and views. I recommend this route, just make it longer.

Namobuddha and Balthali was the highlight of my tour, so I recommend this combination. Namobuddha was so great. In fact this was my own idea, and we had to discuss a lot to include it. I think it’s a bit strange that you don’t recommend it to everybody.

Dhulikhel was nothing to see, as far as we experienced.

Bhaktapur was very nice. Wonderful atmosphere. Patan also perfect as 1 hour stop.

Bungamati and Khokana- a bit disappointing. As suspected, these were small cities, not country side villages as I would say Balthali is.

Kathmandu tour was as good as it can be. Combined with Bhaktapur and Everest flight, a perfect first day.

I will also recommend others to stay more than one night other places than Kathmandu.

Everest flight was great in itself, but I got the worst possible seat.

I asked my contact months ago, and also just after payment, to reserve a good seat for me, as was recommended by many on TripAdvisor. He told me there are no fixed seats, just make sure to enter the plane early and sit on the left side. So I did, but then I realized that we all had specific seats. And I got the worst in the entire plane, beside the rotor on the right side. Probably because everybody else had reserved better seats.

I wasn’t very happy with that during the flight, since the rotor were blocking my sight and pictures. Fortunately the hostess took some nice pictures of Everest for me, so the memories after are OK.

From the moment I asked my first question about Khopra Danda, I knew I was in good hands. To plan a holiday into the unknown requires complete trust in the company you deal with - this includes Ngima (the owner of NMMT), the guides and the porters. No question was too much or inconsequential.
During the briefing, the night before we left, the group of three Australians and three Americans instantly bonded - a great sign for the upcoming 7 days of trekking and transport.

Our main guide, Lhakpa, set a steady, manageable pace which managed our energy reserves throughout the trip.

The first part of the trek was to get to Ghorepani and Poon Hill. This is clearly a popular destination, as the 3,400 stairs were never empty, and the dawn viewing was inundated with tourists. None of that mattered: we were entertained and looked after the whole way; and the views were spectacular!
Throughout the entire trek, both the food and the views just got better every day.

Out of the six of us, two suffered from upset bellies at various points in time and we all had our own special pace to keep us going. This meant that Lhakpa needed to discuss with the group new plans each day. For example, one day we shortened our hike, and on another we pushed on further than we thought possible. This would not be possible with an experienced guide!

Lhakpa also seemed to be able to get us the best of everything! From mountain-side seats on our flight, to top-floor rooms in Ghorepani, to double rooms in overcrowded lodges.

It is not just walking, eating and sleeping involved in trekking. We often discussed local politics and religions in an effort to understand the local culture, something that our guides were only too willing to educate us on. Old customs, overthrown royalty, yaks and naks, yeti and wildlife (leopards, tigers and wolves) were everyday conversations.

The highlight of the Khopra Danda Trek was the day we hiked to Kaire Lake, at 4660m. We set off before dawn and returned as the sun was setting. It was a truly humbling experience to climb over 1,000 metres amongst some of the biggest mountains in the world. To reach Kaire Lake, a holy place for both Hindu and Buddhist, was not only exhilarating, but also calming.
Out of all the people who stayed at Khopra Lodge, we were the only group to make it, to which I credit our wonderful guides.

I would book another trek through Ngima again, no doubt at all. And if you made it through this review, then you should book one as well!

Ngima and his team has provided an amazing first time Nepal experience for us. We had a very long conversation via this portal as we cannot finalize our arrival/departure dates to/from Nepal, but Ngima was ever patient in waiting and answering all our inquiries. He was also very flexible in changing the itinerary according to our preference. He managed to arrange everything (itinerary, flight, permits, tea house booking, etc.) without any issues despite having a very short lead time on hiking peak season.

We were personally fetched from the airport and directly sent to the hotel by Ngima in Kathmandu. The hotel room we stayed in Kathmandu is very well maintained and spacious. I observed that Ngima and his team really tried to get the best accommodation possible. This is also evident during the trek. Of course, you cannot expect the same level of cleanliness and comfort on mountain tea houses, but the accommodations we’ve stayed usually had the basics (i.e. comforter, hot shower, bottled/filtered water, wi-fi, power outlet, etc. – may or may not be chargeable). Some of the tea houses we stayed-in also provided remarkable view of snow capped mountain peaks which personally is the best place to sit and have a sip of piping hot coffee/tea in the morning or afternoon.

The night before we departed for Pokhara, Ngima and Ang Gelu – our guide met and briefed us on what to expect and see during the trek. Upon arrival to Pokhara airport, we were met by our porter (who is also named Ngima) and traveled by land for 2 hours until we reached the jump off point for trekking. Both Ang Gelu and Ngima were friendly and competent. Ang Gelu was very patient and let us trek at our own pace. We never felt that we were rushed and pressured. He regularly asked if we were already tired from walking and needed rest. We were always given morning and afternoon tea/coffee breaks which we really appreciated. Ngima, though shy, is very strong and funny. Ngima and Ang Gelu are both knowledgeable on the mountain trails and are always ready to answer our trivial questions. Every night during dinner, Ang Gelu provides a quick briefing for our next day activity. He also gets our dinner and breakfast preference in advance to ensure that we can have our meals on time.

Our flight back home was also re-scheduled few hours later so once we returned to Kathmandu, Ngima met with us again and helped buy some stuff to bring back home. He even accompanied us to Boudhanath temple to have different experience of Nepal apart from trekking. This was not part of our original itinerary but Ngima gladly accompanied and sent us back to Kathmandu Airport. He even provided some souvenir to for us to keep.

Over all, we are very satisfied with the trip provided by Ngima and his team. The trip has a very personal touch and makes you feel at home away from home.

We did have some transportation issues too and from Lukla because of poor weather conditions but alternative travel was arranged via helicopter thanks to Ngima (the tour group manager ) who has been organizing trips for years and has developed a lot of useful contacts in such circumstances.

I would say there are a lot of advantages in traveling with a guided group I believe they get more of a Priority when it comes to booking ahead in teahouses etc (another thing you wont have to worry about). And as mentioned above if transport becomes an issue alternatives can be looked at instead of sitting at an airport waiting for a few days in hope that the whether will clear up.

I would recommend our tour group due to their experience with dealing with any problems that might arise during the trip, and I believe paying a little extra for that is definitely worth paying for.

Ngima was great at communicating promptly from trip planning till the time, I left Nepal. After the commencement of trip, his first priority was safety of all the team members (including staff), followed by making sure, trip starts and ends on time. Really appreciate, his efforts to organize helicopter rides to and from Lukla, when the weather was not good for flights. He made sure, tour members were well during the trip. Last, but not the least, Ngima is great human trying to return his community in the form of medical camps, planning hospital construction etc.

Dinner time briefings provided us with overview of whats to come the next day. Being not very fit, I was slow. Both of them made sure, either of them was with me to make sure, I was ok and provide motivation to keep going.
All the three porters were great, in promptly moving our bags and always smiling and being happy.

Ang Gelu was just outstanding, well organized, had enormous knowledge over the mountains, the paths, what was safe and what was not. How to properly acclimatize. He was always on time, always ready for help and just amazing all around. Tira was so strong, always had a smile on his face and also did a incredible job carrying our stuff. The experience was very challenging, it is for most people, but they were our cheerleaders, friends and caretakers during the 17 days. We would repeat it again in a second. Nepal has a way of challenging everyone, and there is nothing better than feeling like someone is always watching your back when you are most seriously challenged physically and mentally. Thank you for such an unforgettable experience

Pre-Trip: Fast reply to questions. Flexible arrangements.

Trek: Well organised, great team, great people - which could be hard as you live with them day after day .

One of us had never flown long haul and the other was on their fourth trip to Nepal, the service provided exceeded both our expectations.

So in summary I would highly recommend for both novice or experienced travellers alike.

Of particular note were the consistently speedy responses by Ngima to all pre-trip correspondence and our endless queries, all dealt with with great courtesy and infinite patience, plus the helpful explanations and suggestions made in the planning and lead-up to our trip (5 people). The impression was of an efficient, experienced team who can deal with anything that crops up. We were not disappointed. Tashi and our guide Pemba welcomed us and personally I felt in good hands from the word Go. Our endearingly cheeky, lively, careful guide Pemba Sherpa and warm-natured assistant guide Dendi Sherpa took assiduous care of us on our fabulous 7-day trek, always observing how we were coping and adjusting pace or route accordingly and with respectful grace, shown clearly when one of our group unfortunately had a gastric reaction early on in the trip. They were always there, endlessly good-humoured and supportive. Pemba had to make some considered decisions on our return route, given road closure times due to the current massive Chinese road construction. Our two excellent, nimble porters were smiling and good-natured. We also appreciated the extra time Pemba took to guide us on our "free" day in Kathmandu at the end, when we were lucky enough to visit sites on Buddha's birthday. Although we were sad not to meet Ngima after all our communications with him, he had ensured we were well cared for in his absence (doing good works in his home village). Many thanks, NMMT.

We did the three passes trek with Ang gelu Sherpa as our guide. He was an exceptional guide and an awesome person. He made sure that our experience was perfect at all times. While our experience leads us to believe that Ngima's company would be an amazing choice no matter what, we recommend that you request Ang gelu as your guide. Our porters Kima and Pemba were also incredible. Ngima also provided a great representative, Tashi, who met us at our hotel, briefed us before the trip, arranged transportation to and from the airport, and even helped to coordinate an additional trip to Bhaktapur after we finished trekking . Throughout the entire trip we felt like we were in knowledgeable and capable hands. If you are looking to trek in Nepal, we highly recommend using Nepal Myths and Mountain Trails.
