Ngima Dorji Sherpa

Ngima has been running his trekking company out of Kathmandu since the mid-90s. He specializes in treks and adventure travel in Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. His work in the travel industry has enabled him to visit many countries across the world, including the United States, England, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, Austria, and The Netherlands.

In addition to being a successful travel entrepreneur, Ngima has initiated and implemented several charitable projects in his village, including founding 2 schools, a Tibetan monastery, and a hospital. Ngima was born in Kharikola, a village on the classic trail to Everest, and now lives with his wife and 2 sons in Kathmandu, Nepal.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I’ve arranged numerous trips throughout Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, but I’m most familiar with the Solu Khumbu where I grew up, obviously. I know the trails, peaks and villages around there very well. Most trekkers opt to fly into the Everest region and miss out on the secret gems that lie on the trail between Jiri and Lukla.

I specialize mainly in trekking and mountaineering, but also organize a number of charity and community projects in the Solu Khumbu that specialize in bringing medical supplies to local villages. We have also been working on a project to connect foreign students with local schools in the area. And since the earthquake in 2015, we’ve been helping repair the homes of villagers around the village I grew up in, Kharikhola. I’m excited about helping people have local, authentic experiences."

How did you get involved in travel?

"When I was ten years old, Sir Edmund Hillary came to the Solu Khumbu, near where I was born, to help fund a school. Inspired by his visit, I enrolled as a porter in Lukla, and eventually moved to Kathmandu to join my uncle’s trekking business. In 1991, I spent three months in the U.K. which improved my English and motivated me to enrol in a guiding course and start guiding for a Dutch company operating out of Summit hotel in Kathmandu. Finally, I started my own agency - Nepal Myths and Mountains Trails - in 1996 and have been running that ever since."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"When I was a porter, at that time, we didn’t have any shoes while carrying our heavy loads. Everyone around us was wearing comfortable shoes and socks, of course. At the end of one of our treks up to Everest Base Camp, a couple French members in our group left us each with a great pair of hiking boots that lasted for years to come. A small act of kindness, sure, but it made all the difference to my feet for the next 3 years! "

If only one word, it would be care. Care for me as a client and for my experience was evident and consistent. In the pre-trip communication, in the detailed responses, in the pick up at Kathmandu, choice of hotel, ongoing communication and check ins by Ngima during the jeep trek to Lo Manthang. Choice of a driver, Razu (sp?), with 18 years experience taking me up very roads and then some very tricky, not for faint of heart "roads" in the Mustang regions. Each night, I don't know how or where, it seemed Razu cleaned the car, at least for sure he cleaned the rubber foot mat in the back for under my feet - little things mattered and noticed. My guide was Pemba Sherpa, with 7 Everest summit attempts and 5 successful was over qualified for a jeep trek but he didn't in any way act as if he was; just there, helpful, humble, friendly, made sure i was comfortable and safe, knowledgeable, confident - i was in his "backyard" that he knew very well. Operations Manager, Binod was outdistancing as was Amit (sp?) who was our driver around Kathmandu. I mentioned them because I had a unique request which was to do a litter pick up in Kathmandu even if it was just me but they weren't up for something small so they went big and we did a great big pick up with a local school, Lion's Club and local residents - over the top creation of a an event. That was amazing!

I flew to Pokhara and then drove up to Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang near the Chinese border. A great adventure. scenery was great. Lots of monasteries were fascinating.

Carefully Curated Cultural Immersion ... planning was important, saying what I wanted, knowing what I was getting and then excellent execution by the team, made it great! Thank you, Pemba, Binod, Amit, Razu and Ngima.

This was our second international trip with Kim-Kim and I highly recommend their services to connect you with the best guides in a region and to reduce the stress of coordination and language barriers. In particular, this trip to Nepal was so phenomenal that this review cannot convey the level of connection and respect that we gained for our trekking team, their families, and the villages that we travelled through. What truly set this experience apart was the incredible dedication of our organizer, Ngima. We came to Nepal with a specific desire to give back to two community schools and two monasteries. My children purchased and delivered smart boards, uniform supplies, delivered postcards from our hometown and distributed 400 hand sewn school supply bags during the first 5 days of our trip. Ngima put immense effort into organizing the logistics and seamlessly weaving the school visits into our itinerary. It was a profound, beautifully managed experience that our family will treasure forever, and it wouldn't have happened without Ngima’s passion and hard work.

Our lead trail guide, Nuru Jangbu Sherpa, was a true master of his craft. Knowing his impressive guiding achievements and the massive expeditions he has led, we were humbled to trek with him. Yet, he had a remarkable way of making our family’s journey feel just as monumental and impressive as any world-class summit. His son, Pemba Sherpa, who runs the family tea house in Paiya with his wife, joined us for the trek as a second guide and added a youthful maturity to the trip. He was always eager to play soccer or build a tower out of playing cards with our children and was an excellent role model for them to look up to.

The team’s attentiveness to our health and safety was world-class. They monitored our well-being constantly, ensuring everyone felt strong and secure at every altitude. Each day we would fill out a table of metrics for each family member, including blood oxygen monitoring. When health fluctuations and altitude sickness required us to pivot our plan, the team adjusted our itinerary flawlessly on the fly, never making us feel like a burden or that we had fell short of an achievement. They replaced the original plan with something that was equally (if not more) incredible.

The kindness, warmth, and constant smiles of Nuru, Pemba, and our incredible team of porters completely stole our hearts. Their strength is unmatched, but it is their gentle kindness that we will remember most. As a family that has travelled all over the world, including sailing across the Pacific Ocean on our catamaran for 2 years, this is the trip that our kids want to repeat over and over again.

Final Thoughts
If you are planning a trip to Nepal and want an experience that combines flawless logistics, unparalleled safety, deep cultural connection, and a team that feels like family, look no further. Ngima, Nuru, Pemba, and the entire crew gave us more than just a trek—they gave us a lifelong bond with the Himalayas and its beautiful people. Five stars doesn't feel like enough but I hope that this review encourages you to take your own adventure to Nepal, specifically taking the time to explore communities that are on the fringes of high tourist areas. This is where the experience reached a elevated level of connection for our tribe of 6. Good luck!

We were all on the window seats and were lucky the weather was perfect for the viewing. However, the time given on both sides were different. The lucky ones got to view longer as the plane was moving at a very slow pace but when it turned around it went quite fast, and some may not enough have time to capture Mt Everest.

There was a landslide which led to the regular path being closed. We had to use an untrodden path (Which is steep) to reach to the other side. Though it was challenging; both the guide and porter helped us to reach safely. This was the best part for our new experience

I had an amazing experience in my first solo trekking trip to Nepal hiking to Ghorepani Pool Hill. While I definitely need to improve my fitness, I had an amazing service from my host Ngima who along with the guide and portar Lakpa took extremely good care of me, encouraging me every step of the way. For me, it was the journey than the destination that made the trip memorable. Both the guide and Porter were cheerful and happy souls, and I cherish all the wonderful moments I spent with them

Lil in particular was fantastic, very caring, and did all the deterred to arrange a wonderful, spontaneous wedding renewal ceremony at Manakamana. Shree was very knowledgeable and Ngima orchestrated everything well, and was very helpful when our Indian visa was delayed. Will recommend Kim Kim to all my friends. Thank you Ngima!

Throughout the trip, he met me at the airport and kept tabs on all logistics to make sure things went well when flights to Lukla became delayed and when I felt slightly unwell above 16k feet. Throughout the trip, he met me at the airport and kept tabs on all logistics to make sure things went well when flights to Lukla became delayed and when I felt slightly unwell above 16k feet. He personally guided me around Kathmandu. My trekking guide was Tashi and porter was Rabi. They were absolutely fantastic. I felt they were looking out for me at all times and incredibly respectful. We formed a little trail family. When I didn’t feel well, we changed routes to have a more leisurely trek downhill instead of tackling two more high elevation passes. This was the experience of a lifetime! 1000/10 would recommend!
