As a former professor of religion and philosophy at various colleges and seminaries in the U.S., my particular interest is in pilgrimages and educational religious tourism in Jordan and Israel. I have been working in the travel industry since moving to the Petra area with my husband in 2018. I enjoy planning unique trips that aren't "cookie-cutter" itineraries and love giving lots of options so that the client can get involved in tailoring the trip to their personal needs and desires. I like to help travelers think outside the box so that the journey gives opportunity for meaningful experiences and relationships across cultural boundaries.
What places and activities do you specialize in?
"I specialize in classic tours for those with a particular interest in historical or religious elements of travel. Further, I see travel as an amazing tool for mutual understanding and ultimately for peace. So I can also help organize group tours that expose travelers to the complexities of life in this region. For example, perhaps you would like to visit a cooperative village jointly founded by Israeli Jews and Arabs, or even meet with local religious and civil leaders from various organizations. I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas about what you want to learn from a trip to Jordan and/or Israel. "
How did you get involved in travel?
"I went on a group tour to Israel several years ago and left with the idea that working in tourism would be an interesting and gratifying profession. At that time, I was the Dean of a seminary and was quite happy in academia. Then, in 2017, my academic institution closed. So my husband and I decided to make a big change and follow our dream of moving to Jordan to live near Petra. Here, the travel industry is a huge part of the economy, so I began working with a local tour operator."
Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.
"I decided to rent a car and drive myself from Barcelona to Montpellier, France during a summer trip. The coastline was marvelous and I was so happy driving along, listening to the French radio and feeling proud of myself for understanding as much as I did. Meanwhile, I was using my phone GPS to keep track of my directions. Yes... when I returned to the US, my cell phone bill was over $1000 due to roaming charges. It was an unforgettable lesson learned, and I couldn't believe I had done it!"
