Hiking in Southern Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego - 17 Days

Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego—the names alone spark intrigue and adventure. This 17-day itinerary takes you to some of the most jaw-dropping locations in both areas as you trek into the backcountry along the spine of Chile and Argentina. Hikes in this region are challenging but rewarding and will test your body and lungs. In between treks you'll see massive glaciers, exotic wildlife, and unique cities located on the edge of the world.

The mountains, forests, glacial lakes and pampas of Patagonia offer tremendous long-distance trekking opportunities. Both Chile and Argentina are represented here, as the treks sometimes meander over the border of these two countries. In addition, a number of trails in Chile’s national parks are part of the Sendero de Chile, a network of trails that spans the length of the country. Below are the best treks in both Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia.

This self-guided and incredibly scenic trip highlights Patagonia's best trails on both sides of the border. Kick off in Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park, home of 13 glaciers and the iconic Mt. Fitz Roy. Next is Chile's Torres del Paine National Park for more jaw-dropping peaks, turquoise lakes, and rare wildlife. Finish back in Argentina for coastal trails and a taste of the world's 'southernmost city'.

Spend two action-packed weeks traveling around Argentine Patagonia! This itinerary starts in Buenos Aires, where you'll take a city tour before flying south to El Calafate, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. Boat to glaciers and try an ice trekking excursion, then hike the trails around El Chaltén, Argentina's trekking capital. Continue to Ushuaia for a cruise on the Beagle Channel, canoeing in Tierra del Fuego National Park, and a visit to a penguin colony.

Argentina's Lake District is not short on scenery

An alpine hub in Argentina's Lake District, Bariloche is considered one of the most scenic spots in the country, offering a plethora of year-round activities. Starting in Buenos Aires, you'll fly to the Andean foothills on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake for a series of treks, history tours, and kayaking excursions while enjoying the town's numerous restaurants and chocolate shops.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The places and experiences that made up our itinerary were excellent. We particularly enjoyed El Calafate/El Chalten. The kayaking/hiking day was amazing. And also the area around Salta - just stunning scenery. In Ushuaia, we loved the day of hiking and rafting. We did not have good luck with weather but enjoyed ourselves nonetheless. The hotels & breakfasts met our expectations - nothing disappointing. The internal flights and all the transfers went very smoothly. And the guides we had for the various things we did were really excellent. Well-informed, easy to understand, fun to be with.
The only thing we might have liked more of was a chance to walk or hike during the four days we spent in the north around Salta. We realize there were long distances to cover by vehicle and so maybe not enough time for that.

It was a wonderful trip a couple hiccups, but they’re bound to happen on a long trip like mine was. One thing I could mention is that flying from Quito to Baltra Island. I was not told there was a stop in between. It was a wonderful trip a couple hiccups, but they’re bound to happen on a long trip like mine was. One thing I could mention is that flying from Quito to Baltra Island. I was not told there was a stop in between. I was very tired and I was dead asleep and didn’t really hear or understand the announcement and consequently when we landed I thought we were there and I got off had to book another flight myself and a hotel and get on the flight the next morning to go to Baltra while at the airport, I talked to a girl the same thing happened to her. She was not told there was a stop over and she had gone to sleep as well so.
But for the most part, the trip was wonderful. I was always picked up on time brought back the guides and the drivers were wonderful. The hotels were excellent except in QUITO I had to have cold showers. Other than that my showers were all hot, but that hotel was very nice even with the cold showers. The quality of the tours were terrific. I enjoyed every one of them one person who is very instrumental in helping me was Leo QUITO who came to the hotel and explained several things to me that I didn’t understand and that made a world of difference. I have told many many people how my tour was organized because as travelling alone, I spoke to everybody and they all wanted to know about my tour for one person for such a long period of time so I told them Kim Kim was an excellent company and I had used it a couple times before and would definitely be using it again. Weather was excellent so that was a good time to go. Things weren’t as expensive as I thought they would be food was excellent all in all. It was a trip of a lifetime thank you Dorothy McConville Vancouver Canada.

We are very sorry about what happened with your flight to Baltra. We can absolutely understand how confusing and frustrating that moment must have been, especially while traveling alone and being tired. Thank you for sharing this with us, as it helps us make sure these details are communicated more clearly moving forward.
It is wonderful to hear that, beyond that situation, you were able to enjoy the hotels, the tours, the food and even connect with other travelers along the way. The fact that you shared your experience with others during your trip and would choose to travel with us again truly means a great deal to us 😊
Thank you again for your trust, Dorothy. It was a pleasure to be part of your journey.
Kindest regards,
Claudia
