What you'll do

As you travel from Cairns by 4WD, your naturalist guide will share insightful commentary about the area's history and captivating vistas along the scenic Captain Cook Highway, giving you a deeper appreciation of the Coral Sea coastline. Upon reaching the Daintree River, you'll sit down to a light morning snack of coffee or tea and cookies before you set off on a guided river cruise. Here, you'll have the chance to spot estuarine crocodiles and observe the tranquil mangrove ecosystem. Revel in the beauty of the rainforest while learning about the endemic wildlife and ecology that make this region a natural wonder.

Once over the Alexandra Range, you'll pause for a view of the UNESCO-protected Wet Tropics merging with the azure Coral Sea. Continuing, you'll immerse yourself farther into the rainforest on an elevated boardwalk tour, where your guide will interpret the diverse flora and fauna around you. As you explore this ancient habitat, keep an eye out for the elusive southern cassowary. Afterward, you'll have lunch at Heritage Lodge within the Daintree Rainforest region, choosing from a number of items.

The afternoon has you refreshing with a swim in a secluded rainforest stream, followed by a serene walk along Cape Tribulation Beach. As you stroll, absorb the incredible view of where the rainforest meets the reef. And before heading back, indulge your taste buds once more with a stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company for a signature cup of homemade ice cream crafted from exotic fruit grown on-site. Finally, the fun concludes with a ferry crossing back over the Daintree River, where you'll then switch vehicles and return to your hotel full of memories from one of the world's oldest, still-living tropical rainforests.

Tips for future travelers

The length of time travelling to and from Daintree would have been useful information. Also the lack of toilet breaks in the morning.

Overall this was a good tour, just really long. Rown, our guide, was very knowledgeable and engaging. He did a great job with the group and well-versed about Daintree and the rainforest and its history. Great storyteller. The only drawback was the cruise we took on the river. I don't think that added anything to the experience. We probably gotten home a bit sooner if we skipped that. Read more

No need to bring snacks, Rowan brought a few things to share, plus we had a stop for ice cream.

Quality of Experience
Our guide did a fantastic job. Plus we were seeing so many beautiful locations.
Food
The food at the restaurant was good but not great. Knowing there aren't a lot of options it worked. The restaurant offered a great backdrop to the forest. Plus many in our group were able to go for a swim in the river next to the restaurant.

Rowan is really good at what he does!
Transport
The vehicle was clean and comfortable.

Like going back in time. Jurassic Park and king Kong rolled into one trip. We were incredibly lucky and saw the ultra-rare cassowary, plus all sorts of spiders (as big as my hand), wild birds, crocodiles, etc. A fantastic insight, in the oldest rainforest in the world (180m years old). Read more

The regular Billy Tea Safari tour was edited somewhat owing to several roads having been washed out during a cyclone in December. Nevertheless, we explored quite a bit and got a full sense of the rainforest and its inhabitants.

Our guide was a local who was passionate and very knowledgeable about nature. On the long drive from our hotel in Cairns to the edge of the Daintree we learned a lot about the flora and fauna, as well as the impact of the cyclone on the area, its industries and residents. Among the various stops, we got a fabulous view from near the top of the mountain (after a vertigo-inducing set of switchbacks getting up there), a river boat crossing where we attempted spot crocs, a short walk along a riverside boardwalk to see ancient ferns and gushing waterfalls (and spiders!), and a chance meeting with a wild cassowary.

We enjoyed delicious lunch at the Heritage Inn, where we also had a cool dip in a crocodile-free water hole. Later in the afternoon we got homemade ice cream at a small plantation that grows its own tropical fruit. The drive home featured lots of great Aussie rock tunes.
