La Mirande, Avignon

Historic 14th-century palace turned hotel featuring grand rooms, organic breakfast, four dining options, and regular cultural events

Overview

La Mirande is a treasure trove of 18th and 19th-century charm housed in a 14th-century cardinal's palace. This historical monument transports you back to the enchanting 18th century, drawing its essence from the rich heritage of Avignon and Provence. The hotel's location is nothing short of romantic, nestled right next to the eastern facade of the Pope's Palace, offering picturesque views from almost every room and the beautiful garden.

Each of the 26 intimate rooms at La Mirande is individually decorated with historic French cotton prints, creating a unique travel narrative with names such as Le Grand Corail, Le Bambou, and Le Perroquet. The rooms have parquet floors, antique furniture, paintings, and silk-lined curtains. The grandeur extends to the Belle Époque bathrooms with Carrara Arabescato marble and block-printed wallpapers. If you opt for the large Deluxe Rooms or the Suites, you'll have even more space and enjoy views of the neighboring Popes' Palace through antique-glass windows.

La Mirande embodies the art of French cuisine with four distinct dining options—a sophisticated gourmet restaurant, its bistro cousin, a guest table set in the ancient kitchen, and a tavern. The Michelin-starred restaurant, under the helm of Chef Florent Pietravalle, offers a tasting menu that explores the flavors of Provence. If you're in the mood for something more relaxed, you can opt for Florent's light and simple à la carte menu in the garden room or on the adjacent terrace next to the Pope's Palace. The hotel also regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions, performances, culinary events, and themed parties.

Such a different hotel located in the center of the center. We felt like we were transported back in time staying in a very classy vintage hotel from the past. Everything was wonderful and very victorian. We enjoyed taking pictures of everything. Breakfast was excellent. We did not enjoy the dinner as much and recommend some of the local restaurants. We felt our dinner was luke warm and mediocre service. Read more

Amazing experience for a mom-daughter stay. The hotel is centrally located, but as other travelers have noted, driving can be a harrowing experience. Amazing experience for a mom-daughter stay. The hotel is centrally located, but as other travelers have noted, driving can be a harrowing experience. We couldn't figure out how to get through the pop up metal barriers when we arrived. After driving in circles through VERY narrow streets, we got through only because the barrier was down for the person in front of us. When we drove out the next day to visit a winery, we encountered the barrier at the bottom of the hill. Still unaware how to get past, we backed up the hill, inevitably scraping the side of a wall. When we walked back up to ask for help, the valet graciously walked us down and explained how to use the call box. That aside, the hotel property is spectacular and the staff were wonderful. Our room was spacious, very traditional French country decor. We were greeted with chocolate and fruit basket. No detail was spared! Breakfast in the morning was wonderful and lunch in the restaurant on the patio is a must! Highly recommend!
