Ben Tanaka

I am a seasoned travel professional with a degree in Tourism Management and 27 years of extensive experience in the travel industry. My career has taken me from guiding tours to managing office operations, including tour arrangements and pricing. My deep knowledge of Japan and China allows me to craft unique and unforgettable travel experiences for my clients. Whether you are looking for cultural immersion, adventure, or a family getaway, I am dedicated to ensuring your journey is seamless and memorable. Let me help you discover the hidden gems and rich traditions of these beautiful destinations.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I specialize in creating immersive travel experiences in Japan and China. My areas of expertise include:

Guided Tours: Offering in-depth cultural and historical insights.
Custom Itineraries: Tailoring trips to meet the unique needs and interests of each traveler.
Cultural Experiences: Arranging activities such as tea ceremonies, calligraphy classes, and traditional performances.
Adventure Travel: Planning outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and exploring natural wonders.
Culinary Tours: Organizing food tours that highlight local cuisine and culinary traditions.
My goal is to provide travelers with a comprehensive understanding of these destinations and to make their journey truly unforgettable."

How did you get involved in travel?

"I’ve always had a passion for travel, which led me to study Tourism Management in the University. After graduating, I dove into the travel industry, starting as a tour guide and eventually planning and organizing tours.

Living in Japan and China, I’ve dedicated myself to showcasing the authentic beauty of these countries. My travels across Europe and Asia have enriched my understanding of diverse cultures, allowing me to create unique and immersive travel experiences.

One life-changing moment was after a trip to Japan in 2000. Both Japan and China are quintessential representatives of the mysterious East. Inspired by the incredible tour, I decided to establish my own company, focusing on Japanese and Chinese tourism.

We aim to provide travelers with authentic adventures, connecting them deeply with local culture and communities. Join us, and you might never want to leave!"

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"One of the most unforgettable experiences in my career was organizing a cultural immersion tour in Japan. We visited traditional tea houses, participated in a tea ceremony, and explored ancient temples. The highlight was a night stay at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) where our group experienced the authentic Japanese hospitality and cuisine. This trip not only provided a deep cultural insight but also created lasting memories and bonds among the participants."

We went to Japan for 11 days. I will not lie to you and tell you that I was not nervous. However, been with kimkim made this so easy. We had amazing guides who all spoke English justice fluently as I do. We had drivers Medicine train stations and airports. They would not leave until they were ensured that we were checked into the hotel. I have not had a more seamless vacation in the United States and to have this kind of experience in a foreign country was nothing more than a miracle. I cannot tell you how skeptical I was about this, but our tour guide, Hal, in Tokyo had spent 12 years in Houston. Our tour guide in Kyoto, Khang, was actually in the United States Navy and grew up in California. Our tour guide in Osaka had spent eight years in United States. Not only do they speak the language, but they also helped us negotiate prices on things we were trying to buy. For example, my wife wanted to buy a fairly pricey purse at one of the resale shops in our tour guide, not only recognized that we were being up charged than negotiated down the price. I wish that I had done this years ago. If this is what traveling the world was like, then I have absolutely no reservation reservations.

Wow! This hotel is stunning. I typically stay at the Omni or the Ritz Carlton in the United States. The staff, cleanliness, comfort of the rooms with a fan, the mini bar, and the in-house restaurants are amazing. Furthermore, I had no trouble as an English speaker only in the hotel. Their breakfast is awesome and I highly recommend you buy it. My only regret is that we didn’t stay here longer

My wife actually believed this is the best hotel we stayed in during our 12 day trip to Japan. However, I felt it was somewhat dated.. however, we always get two rooms for our family, one for our kids and one for us. They actually had a giant suite that allow us to have one key card access to main hallway that then it had both rooms attached. I’ve never seen that before. The staff was incredibly kind. The breakfast was amazing. I had no problems with being an English only speaker. I would say here again without any reservation. The only thing I would state is that it’s relatively far away from the train station. If you were hellbent on using public transportation, it’s gonna take a little while, but it’s only 30 minutes with an Uber from the bullet train..

Guide’s Name: Mr.Ricky - ok…great guy. Some things were off. we would have loved to have dinner in Kyoto where all the action is. he was just going to leave us though.. I asked how do I get back to hotel… and didn’t get an answer. so we didn’t eat and followed him back to hotel on a long trek via public transportation.

I get japan now for their public transportation. but we seemed to have spent hours on it with him. when a taxi was available for a little more money.

Finally on our last day.. he seemed to hurry us off the island. we got done with kayaking…then he wanted to get through the temple. fine… but we were dehydrated, hungry, and had to go to bathroom. he lacked any kind of empathy for our needs. When we had to demand to eat.. we finally did. then he wanted to leave. I thought we were supposed to have private time. then we leave and get in tram for over an hour or o get back to hotel.

there were bright spots with him… but

Hi Bob,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review.

First of all, thank you for your trust throughout this journey. From our very first conversations during the planning stage to your final day in Japan, it was truly a pleasure helping you and Rosanne experience this wonderful country.

I was especially happy to read that you felt the trip was well planned and that any issues along the way were resolved quickly. Your kind words mean a great deal to me personally, and I am honored to have been part of your Japan adventure.

I was also very pleased to hear your positive comments about Iris and Hashimoto-san. I will be sure to share your feedback with them. I know they will be delighted to hear that they helped make your trip special.
Please rest assured that we take feedback like yours very seriously. We have already paused assigning Ricky to future tours while we conduct additional training and review these situations with him. Our goal is to ensure that every guest receives the attentive, thoughtful, and personalized care that we expect from our guides.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable because it helps us improve and prevent similar experiences for future travelers.

Japan truly has so much more to offer beyond what you saw on this trip. From Hokkaido to Kyushu, there are still countless amazing places waiting to be discovered. And if you ever decide to return to Japan—or perhaps visit China in the future—you will officially be one of our VIP guests 😊. We would be absolutely delighted to help create another unforgettable journey for you and Rosanne.

Thank you again for your trust, your patience, and your honesty throughout the trip.

Wishing you and Rosanne good health, happiness, and many more adventures ahead.

Really enhanced our trip to learn about the history, shrines and temples. Getting around by train /bus was great for us and she had to work harder than if we had driver to navigate public transport for sure. Hotels were all nice. It was great. The only note is to warn guides we will want lots of restaurant recs (as where we’ll be is not always areas they’ve eaten. We had good luck using tablelog and AI ) and the food at the Hakone onsen was not very good. But we went out for great meals nearby.

I’m really glad to hear that both of your guides made a positive impact on your trip. It’s wonderful that you were able to enjoy not only the sightseeing but also gain deeper insights into Japan’s history and daily life — that’s exactly the kind of experience we hope to create.

I also truly appreciate your helpful feedback regarding restaurant recommendations and the Hakone onsen dining. This is very valuable, and I will absolutely share it with the team to continue improving our future trips.

It was a pleasure planning this journey for you, and thank you again for your trust throughout the process.

I hope to welcome you back to Japan (or China!) in the future — I would love to help you create another amazing trip ✨

Warm regards,
Ben

Kimkim helped us pack in great sites, great bites, and eclectic shopping areas into this 8-night trip! Ben worked with me throughout the planning process, and together we were able to curate a trip that would be memorable for our family of four, including a 16 and 18-year old. We were even able to make some tweaks based on areas my son wanted to see.

Our first full day in Tokyo, we were greeted by our guide, Peter. After handing out our Pasmo cards and train tickets for the trip, we set off at a quick clip to see different areas of Tokyo and learn to navigate the transit system. Peter took time to talk with each of us as we set out, and our son particularly enjoyed talking with him. We checked out a food market, then went to a sushi-making class! We all enjoyed that. We went to a beautiful shrine, and then to Harajuku to visit Pokemon Center and explore secondhand stores. He even took us to Shimokitazawa, which we'd had scheduled for Day 3! We finished up in Shinjuku. By the end of that day, we all felt so tired, but confident we could navigate the transit system!

Peter met us on our second day as well, and we drove out to the Mt Fuji / Five Lakes region for a day trip. The private car was incredibly comfortable, and we enjoyed watching the city fade away and the hills dotted with blooming cherry trees roll in. We were incredibly lucky to see Mt Fuji! We climbed up many stairs at a park for iconic views of Mt Fuji and Chureito Pagoda and peak cherry blossoms! Peter was fantastic to snap photos of us often--I really appreciated that! He also managed to secure the last 4 seats for us for a short boat cruise on Lake Kawaguchi. We also went to a museum where we could learn more about the history of Mt Fuji and the Five Lakes region and how it has formed over the millennia. We then enjoyed a lunch from a spot Peter mentioned was more like "Japanese fast food." While we did receive it quickly, it reminded me in no way of American fast food! Delicious.

After bidding farewell to Peter, we explored other parts of Tokyo, including Akihabara. Our hotel was in Ginza, and it was quite easy to get anywhere from the train lines close to us.

We had no problem navigating to Tokyo Station to catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto, and our hotel was just a few minutes away. We enjoyed visiting the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and found a hiking trail to enjoy some time up there without the crowds. Amanda was our guide here . Though very quiet, she is very easy to talk with and is very informative. She took us to Arashiyama, where we went to the bamboo park and walked around the area. Our family rented bikes for a bit and enjoyed a bike ride by the river, then we met up for lunch. Amanda then took us to the Monkey Park where we could observe Japanese Macaques. Amanda was great at taking a manageable pace up the mountain, and offered breaks at regular intervals. It was very crowded, but we enjoyed seeing these animals up close. We headed back to Kyoto and Amanda guided us into Gion and explained geisha culture to us.

Amanda was also our guide for our second Kyoto day, which I called Temple day. We were able to visit Kinkaku-ji Temple and marvel at the gardens and the golden temple, then went to Ryoan-ji Temple to appreciate minimalist beauty. It was truly quite a contrast. We took a train to Nara, where we visited Todai-ji Temple. We were absolutely blown away by this temple, its construction, its massive size, and the stunning larger-than-life Buddha inside. I was so glad to have included this in our trip!

We got to Osaka, and Ursula met us to go explore Himeji Castle. We had the opportunity to tour the grounds with a volunteer who spoke English, and he told us so much more about the castle's history that we would not have gotten on our own. It was really quite a treat to explore this historic site. Ursula was a great guide, and helped us find a delicious food spot before touring the Kokoen Garden. We explored the area around our hotel on our last evening in Japan.

I cannot thank Kimkim enough for helping to make this such a memorable trip for our family!

We had an absolutely amazing trip!!! Every detail was meticulously planned by Ben. From our great drivers and guides to having the last seat of the bullet train reserved for our extra luggage. I never would have thought of doing that but it was a huge help since we bought a lot of souvenirs! Peter was our guide in Tokyo and Mt Fuji and he took the most beautiful photos of my daughter and I. It was so nice to be in the pictures instead of behind the camera and I am so thankful for those memories.
We ate at several local restaurants that were fantastic and we were the only tourists there. I would never have found these places without my guides Peter and Takizawa.
Peter and Takizawa went above and beyond my expectations as guides and Ben was so accommodating to my teenage daughters many requests and planned everything out so perfectly. The drivers were always on time and let me know their plate numbers and names on WhatsApp. They always offered to carry our luggage and were very polite. The cars were always clean and they drove safely. I was so happy that I didn't have to drive in that insane traffic!
I could never have planned this on my own and I am so happy that I chose KimKim!
