How did you get involved in travel?

"I’ve always had a passion for travel, which led me to study Tourism Management in the University. After graduating, I dove into the travel industry, starting as a tour guide and eventually planning and organizing tours.

Living in Japan and China, I’ve dedicated myself to showcasing the authentic beauty of these countries. My travels across Europe and Asia have enriched my understanding of diverse cultures, allowing me to create unique and immersive travel experiences.

One life-changing moment was after a trip to Japan in 2000. Both Japan and China are quintessential representatives of the mysterious East. Inspired by the incredible tour, I decided to establish my own company, focusing on Japanese and Chinese tourism.

We aim to provide travelers with authentic adventures, connecting them deeply with local culture and communities. Join us, and you might never want to leave!"

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"One of the most unforgettable experiences in my career was organizing a cultural immersion tour in Japan. We visited traditional tea houses, participated in a tea ceremony, and explored ancient temples. The highlight was a night stay at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) where our group experienced the authentic Japanese hospitality and cuisine. This trip not only provided a deep cultural insight but also created lasting memories and bonds among the participants."

We just returned from our anniversary trip to Japan, and I can say with complete confidence that booking through KimKim was one of the best travel decisions we’ve ever made. In fact, this is our third trip using KimKim. From the very first planning email to the final farewell in Osaka, the entire experience was seamless, personal, and unforgettable.
Ben, our travel specialist, was phenomenal. He helped us build the perfect itinerary—listening to everything we wanted, adding thoughtful suggestions, and tweaking the schedule along the way to fit our style. Thanks to him, our trip struck the perfect balance of culture, food, adventure, relaxation, and those “wow” moments we’ll be talking about for years.
And then there were our guides: Peter and Ursula.
These two were an absolute gift to our journey.
Peter, our Tokyo & Hakone guide, made navigating Japan’s transportation system feel effortless. He taught us subway skills worthy of a Mario Bros. level-up, showed us how to experience Shibuya Crossing like locals, and gave us incredible historical context at temples and shrines. He even congratulated me on my sumo match at the lunch show (yes… I stepped into the ring and no, my training was not focused enough 😂).
Ursula, our guide through Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, was equally fantastic. From sake tastings in Fushimi to zen moments at the Golden Pavilion, she blended humor, storytelling, and deep cultural knowledge in a way that made every day feel like traveling with a friend. She helped us navigate the language barrier, made sure we didn’t get lost on trains, and offered endless tips to help us blend in better than we probably deserved. Both guides were great to pack in as much adventure each day while still leaving us with free time to roam and explore on our own.
Every single day was packed with memorable highlights, many of which KimKim helped coordinate:
✨ Sushi-making with a 4th-generation master (we are now “certified” Nigiri makers and have enough footage for a full-length documentary).
✨ A tea ceremony and learning to whisk our own matcha at a university.
✨ Visiting a capybara at a café—one of Emily’s bucket list items.
✨ Riding the bullet train to Kyoto with snacks in hand and Mt. Fuji peeking through the clouds.
✨ Walking through Arashiyama’s bamboo forest and a rickshaw ride through its historic streets.
✨ A full cultural immersion day in Fushimi Inari, weaving through the famous vermilion torii gates.
✨ A relaxing soak and stay in Hakone with incredible views of Mt. Fuji.
✨ Exploring Osaka Castle and ending our trip at the Umeda Sky Building with panoramic nighttime views.
And beyond the excursions, the guides helped us handle everything—from ordering meals to using the Suica card. They answered every question, solved every hiccup, and made us feel completely supported the entire way.
KimKim didn’t just plan a trip—they helped create a collection of memories that feel like a chapter from our own personal, globe-trotting storybook.
If you’re considering a trip to Japan—especially if it’s a special occasion—book with KimKim. Ask for Ben, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get Peter and Ursula too. They helped make our anniversary adventure everything we dreamed of…and then some.
Arigatou gozaimasu, KimKim team.
We’re already thinking about following the green light to our next chapter.

Our guides were all great and went out of their way to see that we saw more, especially when they found out that we were not interested in the more highly crowded places. They patiently answered our questions and saw to our needs. Ben, our specialist, could not have been more attentive to our frequent questions and concerns. He was able to change events based on our interests even as the date of our departure approached. The only thing I would have changed is deleted some of the more crowd-impacted locales such as Nikko and put in more off the beaten path trips like our monastery stay in Minobu and the marvelous animated Festival Float museum in Takayama that our guide added in when he picked up on our interest. We learned and enjoyed much more in the less crowded venues, but this is Japan where it is truly hard to avoid the hoards of tourists. Overall, it was a wonderful trip. This is the second time Ben has helped us with a trip, and I will certainly turn to him again for any future trips.

Temple Lodging Shukubo Kakurinbo

Everyone was attentive to our needs in this quiet and peaceful establishment. We very much enjoyed speaking with the son of the monk of this temple, meeting his girlfriend and his brother's family. The onsen was always free when we wanted it which was a delight. We optioned to take the guided tour which was very interesting. After a stay in busy, crowded Tokyo, 2 nights in this peaceful locale was just what we needed. Definitely, we felt the love and care that those who worked and lived here felt for this temple lodging.

Tokyo

Walking through the gardens on our first day in Tokyo was the perfect choice for us, and we enjoyed have tea on the island in the Hamarikyu Gardens. Unfortunately, we could not do the river cruise as the high tides (due to full moon) prevented the boat from going under the bridges. Our guide knew a bit about the gardens which was appreciated by the two garden enthusiasts in our group. She also was very informative about the Shinto and Buddhist religions and how they interact with the Japanese. The market was every bit as crowded as we expected, but our guide knew a quiet place for us to stop and have lunch.

Very attentive and eager to meet our expectations, though we struggled at times to understand what she was saying.
Transport
Transport was by local trains which often required a lot of walking and waiting. After we discovered that splitting the taxi fare 3 ways made traveling by taxi feasible and much easier than taking the trains, that is the way we traveled when on our own.

Unfortunately, there are two columns outside the train station where we were to meet. Arriving by taxi and not by the train, we were dropped off at the wrong spot and did not realize that until past the meeting time. Thankfully, our Tokyo guide was able to sort everything out, though even after being dropped off near the restaurant we still had trouble locating the guide. It turned out that the food tour guide was waiting for us, but as she only held her sign at waist height, in the crowds, we totally missed her. Once we connected with the group, all was well. They allowed us time to catch up with the rest of the group, and we enjoyed a delightful evening.

Too many people and too much to see. It is all a jumble in our minds with nothing of the amazing temples and shrines standing out in our memory or photos. Fortunately, our guide knew a quiet spot for lunch which we greatly enjoyed. We are also so very glad we were in a private car for this trip which was much more comfortable and relaxed than the trains would have been. In retrospect, it might have been a better idea to spend a night or two here to allow one a more relaxed visit to the various spots so that they did not all run into each other seeing one on top of another.

All was very interesting, and our guide was wonderful. When he discovered how much we had enjoyed the Festival Museum in Takayama, he took us to another such museum in an old quarry in the hills above the Hida Folk Village. This museum offered animated action on the floats which were fascinating. Without him, we would not have found this place, for it does not readily show up on a Google search. The Limestone Cave was interesting and very well done, but if you have been to such caves, it was just like all the others.

I am not sure that we needed to see both Gokayama and Shirakawago. The visit the day before to Hida Folk Village was a delight. It was so peaceful walking through the grounds and seeing the village as it had once been. Gokayama and Shirakawago were a bit of a disappointment, for the old buildings are mixed in with new and there was too much emphasis on attracting the tourist through the many shops which ruined the ambiance of the place. The two villages are so similar that visiting one is probably enough. We did thoroughly enjoy our visit to the 500-year old Iwase House, for this was unique and the couple that run it took their time talking to us and answering our questions. We loved the experience with the old instruments and the short performance of the old song they did for us.

The Kenroku-en Garden was wonderful, and we enjoyed walking its many paths. Touring Kanazawa Castle was also very interesting. We were continually amazed at the amount of effort that has been put into restoring and maintaining so many of Japan's heritage sites. Learning more about the Samurai history was fun. Unfortunately, we did not get to visit the old Samurai house, for a lengthy wait for a bus to the site prevented us from getting there on time. Here a taxi would have been the way to go, for we soon discovered that splitting the taxi fare to most locations made in feasible economically and certainly saved a lot of time and inconvenience.

We missed visiting the Samurai house due to an overly long wait for a bus. Looking at the time, our guide should have opted for a taxi. We would have gladly paid rather than wait what seemed like 30 minutes for the bus.

Seeing photos of the Golden Pavilion is better than actually viewing it in real life, and it actually looks more impressive in photos than it does in person. Much too crowded, though seeing the large, golden Buddha was interesting. We felt the guides at the temple were a bit surly when one chastised one of us for putting her hand on a railing to balance herself when taking off her shoes. There were no places to sit or to balance offered. I guess with all the crowds, they have to be super vigilant. The Fushimi Inari Shrine was worth the visit even though very crowded, and one cannot help being impressed with the amount of love and devotion that went into the many torii placed there. We also enjoyed walking the grounds afterwards. The Art Performance was very well done, and our trip to Pontocho Alley proved to be our spot for two dinners while in Kyoto.

The River Boat ride was much too long and not all that interesting, though the boat guides were animated and fun to watch. The bamboo forest surpassed our expectations, mainly because we road through it on rickshaws which allowed us to be on what felt like a private path away from the maddening crowds on the broader boulevard. It was quiet on that path allowing us to absorb the beauty of the forest. The tea ceremony was quite interesting with the kimono dress up. Unfortunately, none of the three of us could sit on the floor, and the young man doing the ceremony did not act pleased with us. It felt like we were reluctantly given small stools or chairs to use, but even these were extremely uncomfortable for our 77-yr old knees. Though we enjoyed watching the ceremony, it was a torture to sit through.

If I had known that the drive to Himeji from Osaka was 2 and more hours, I would have suggested an alternative. Over 4 hours of driving in a car just to see one site was not worth the time. We are glad, however, that we went by car and not by train. A visit to a block printing museum which had been offered as a special treat could not be done due to the traffic. Not realizing how the timing was going to play out, we spent way too much time at the castle and should have been hustled along which we would have readily done since that block printing museum was something we looked forward to seeing. The castle was definitely interesting, but not worth the time we spent there or the time it took to get there and back. We ended up beingdropped off at the airport much earlier than expected, but not having enough time to slip in the museum.

The Peace Memorial is something everyone should see. It was heartbreaking to see the pain and suffering of so many Japanese people. It was a beautiful day, and after the museum we enjoyed walking the grounds, and got to see school children bringing chains of cranes to the memorial dedicated to a girl who died as a result of her injuries. It was a very meaningful experience.

Ursula took us to an additional place on the way back to the hotel to see a turret that was part of a castle. I was worried about getting back on time; she had it all handled and we arrived at the train station with 20 minutes to spare!

Our next guide was Ursula, who was with us for the remainder of our trip with KimKim before we continued on our own. Ursula was as outstanding as Shumpei, and we loved exploring Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima with her. She was very flexible with us around the schedule and really encouraged us to go at our own pace. She was always helpful and gave great suggestions on where to eat or shop etc.
As it was our family's first time in Japan, we appreciated having guides to help us navigate or to help translate when needed. In addition to being helpful, our guides were both a pleasure to spend time with and made our time in Japan that much more memorable. So thank you again very much to the whole team at Kim Kim, but especially to Shumpei and Ursula!

I used Kim Kim travel to help me create my much anticipated family trip to Japan this summer. Because my husband and I were traveling with our children, ages 13 and 10, I wanted to be sure that everything went smoothly. After doing my own research online, I had a list of the places and activities that I wanted to visit and experience in the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. It was easy to schedule the initial 15 minutes phone call to discuss my basic preferences for travel accommodations and the things that were most important to me. I wanted a smaller, more intimate experience with just my family instead of a larger group because I was traveling with young children and needed flexibility if we wanted to end one of our days short to return to our hotel. (Sometimes kids get tired). After relaying my wants on the initial call, I was connected with Ben via email. Ben was wonderful! Over the next few months, he and I emailed back and forth on the Kim Kim site about every minor detail of my trip. He was able to take my list and organize which activities were near each other so that our time was efficiently spent. We were able to visit every place that I requested, including a few random restaurants that my kids and I found online that we wanted to experience. He booked 2 fantastic hotels for us in Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as our train tickets to travel to and from both cities. He reserved the times and tickets for the majority of our activities. The best part of all were the 2 wonderful and knowledgeable local guides that accompanied my family around each city. Ms Yoko was our guide in Tokyo and she was amazing! She was an expert at navigating the Tokyo subway and train system. Every restaurant and store that I inquired about, she was able to write down directions for us on how to get there on our free day. Ms. Yoshida was our guide in Kyoto and she was also outstanding! Not only was she extremely knowledgeable about our activities there, she was also helpful in making suggestions to make our time as efficient as possible. Having our personal guides really put that special touch on our trip. With all that said, this travel service is a MUST! I HIGHLY recommend using Kim Kim for your trip to Japan. It is a great way to experience the country and the culture.

My wife and I are celebrating our 10 year anniversary this July and I knew early on that a family of four trip to experience Japan for the first time together would be a once in a lifetime event. I knew well enough that I would not be able to plan and execute such an important trip myself so I feel so grateful that I stumbled upon Kimkim and hit the ground running.

Ben was my wonderful trip planner and from the first interaction, he was so extremely helpful and patient with my 1,000s of questions and itinerary changes. I wanted this Japan trip to be something that would be relatively stress free for me and my wife but also contain a variety of activities and experiences that our entire family would enjoy. Working with Ben to plan the entire trip was such a breeze. Despite having never worked with a planning company before let alone with Kimkim, I felt completely at ease and comfortable with Ben's recommendations and suggestions.

Every part of the trip was designed and planned wonderfully. From the meticulous selection of amazing hotels across the spectrum of Japanese styles (ryokan, onsens, apartment-style, mountain resorts) to all the fun hands-on activities for adults and kids alike (sushi-making, samurai museums, sumo shows, etc), this was a trip that none of us will ever forget.

And I would be remiss without mentioning our incredible tour guides, Peter and Ursula. Peter was so on task and schedule with us during our Tokyo days and he was so patient and gracious with our children throughout the tours. I can't count how many times he and I would be carrying my napping daughter still in her stroller up and down various train station steps over multiple stations and transfers. He never failed to take care of our every need in this unfamiliar place. We had zero stress with Peter around that allowed us to soak up the joy of the experience 100%.

Ursula was our amazing tour guide (and pseudo member of the family) in Kyoto/Osaka. Our family hit it off with Ursula right from the get go and she was always so flexible with our minor changes in scheduling and events as we did our best to adapt to our children's energy levels and attention spans. The extremely hot weather in Japan also put added pressure on everyone but both Ursula and Peter were always ready to lend a hand and make sure we all stayed healthy and happy throughout.

This trip was planned as perfectly as I could have imagined and I owe Ben/Peter/Ursula/Kimkim a huge thank you on behalf of my entire family. The next time we want to take another adventurous trip, I would not hesitate for one second to work with Kimkim again. I also highly recommend Kimkim to anyone who wants to plan a milestone trip like ours without the hassle and stress.

Thank you again Kimkim team! Until we meet again!
