Kathrin Gerstel

I am passionate about creating bespoke travel experiences, specialize in designing journeys that go beyond the ordinary. My approach is rooted in the belief that travel is not just about moving from place to place—it's about immersing fully in the spirit of a destination, discovering its culture, stories, and natural beauty.

Each itinerary is crafted to invite meaningful encounters, allowing travelers to slow down, step off the beaten path, and be surrounded by nature's authenticity—whether through forest trails, coastal hideaways, or remote mountain retreats.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I specialize in crafting immersive travel experiences across New Zealand with a focus on Middle-earth magic, rich cultural encounters, and nature-based exploration—delivered in comfort and style. Whether you're walking in the footsteps of Frodo through iconic Lord of the Rings filming locations, sharing in the stories and traditions of Māori culture, or discovering pristine landscapes without compromising on comfort, I design journeys that awaken curiosity and create lasting connections.

My itineraries are personal, thoughtful, and rooted in the belief that true travel happens when you slow down, engage, and allow the destination to shape your story."

How did you get involved in travel?

"Originally from Germany, I relocated to the United States over two decades ago, where I began my career in the recreational vehicle industry. After several enriching visits to New Zealand, I made the life-changing decision to settle there permanently in 2023. My global background, combined with hands-on industry experience and a love for meaningful travel, allows me to approach every opportunity with cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and a genuine appreciation for local insight."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"With a passion for immersive, nature-centered travel, I continually seek experiences that offer both serenity and discovery. One such moment unfolded during a kayak tour through the Honeycomb Caves, where I glided silently across water so clear and amber-toned it resembled perfectly brewed tea. Surrounded by towering trees and dramatic stone formations carved by time, the journey—led by an expert National Park guide—felt like floating through a living forest cathedral.

This experience confirmed my belief in the power of slowing down and letting nature lead. It was a calming, almost meditative encounter that reminded me how deeply enriching it is to explore places not just with our eyes, but with intention and presence."

Can't possibly list everything we got to experience, and it could never have worked out so well without the help we got from Kathrin. Just can't say enough how much I recommend KimKim for travel planning. We had so many wonderful things arranged for us that any stress we might have had going it on our own just evaporated. I had so many questions, and Kathrin was endlessly patient and helpful!

Beautiful accommodations, outstanding service, a wonderful included breakfast, and a great location are some of the reasons we loved this hotel. There was roadwork at the time that made it tricky to get to, but when we were close someone from the hotel saw us and came out to show us where to park then helped with our luggage. We were sorry to only have one night there, and highly recommend it as a home base when you are visiting Queenstown.

While this was one of the things I wanted to make sure I experienced on our trip to New Zealand (I was an anthropology major and loved studying about the Maori) I was a little suspicious that this might feel too "touristy". By the end of a delightful evening all fears were allayed. Actually meeting the extended family who operate Te Pa Tu, the variety of ways they showed you what life in one of their villages would have been like (with interactive events), listening to their fabulous singing and chants (oh my gosh what voices they have!), and sitting down to a feast with them scattered among the guests so you could learn more one on one - I mean, what more could you ask for?

Loved the island but wouldn't do the Hop On Hop Off bus next time. We were there in the fall and maybe it's different during high season but the schedule had us waiting a lot, and we wasted a lot of time we could have spent exploring the island and the wineries.

Susan, your words absolutely made my day — thank you so much for sharing your joy and enthusiasm. I’m thrilled that your New Zealand adventure became the dream trip you’d hoped for, from glaciers and fjords to rafting, kayaking, and that unforgettable Māori experience. It was a pleasure helping you explore both islands and fit in so many incredible moments without the stress of planning on your own. I’m especially grateful for your kindness about my support and patience along the way. Your heartfelt recommendation means the world to me.

It couldn't have worked out better and we recommend KimKim to everyone who wants to hear about our trip. Kathrin began helping us last August (our trip began this April) and by the time we were ready to go she had made sure every detail was taken care of. Quizzing us first about what sort of vacation we were looking for (Lord of the Rings sites? Outdoor activities? Museums and galleries?), how long we had available, our general budget, etc. she came up with a fabulous list of ideas for us. The more we learned about our options the more she fine-tuned our selections, then she arranged our New Zealand flights and car rentals and boat rides. It ended up being the perfect mix of our ideas and her suggestions, with all the stress taken out of the trip. Her selection of companies for the activities we wanted to do was spot on - loved all the people we had contact with. Heck we even ran into another couple who had used Kathrin and KimKim - that was fun! New Zealand is one of the few places we would really love to go to again, and I'm certain having their guidance in planning our trip was a big part of that.

The cruise into Doubtful Sound was so very pretty - really glad we did an overnight trip. Also very glad we took our agent's advice and went here instead of the more popular (and crowded) Milford Sound, although on a return trip we might check that out too. Felt like we were the only people on the sound, and spending then night just felt magical. Our little kayak cruise was a fun treat as well. When they cut the engines on the return trip and we got to listen to the silence it was just spectacular.

This was an unexpectedly amazing day/evening. The kayaking, while tiring, felt marvelous and it was really fun to then have a bbq and soak in the hot springs. Had wonderful conversations with the other people at the springs, including a other couple who had booked their vacation thru KimKim and Kathrin! We got back into our paddling gear at sunset and went the rest of the way to the glow worm cave with our guide and another couple (our whole group!). Sliding into the tiny cave and seeing the glow worms literally right over our heads was astonishing, and hearing both the ancient tales and the scientific explanation for them was very enlightening (pun intended). Paddled by the light of the full moon back to our starting point and slept very well indeed that night.

The longest time we stayed in any one place was two nights. We wanted to see as much of the country as we could during the time we had. The only thing we would do differently would be to stay longer in a few of the locations.

Additional context on review above, Excellent on responsiveness, throughout planning and while underway on the trip. Review of 3 stars reflects the actual itinerary, While we felt the actual tours and excursions we participated in were very good to excellent. especially Jamie as our guide / driver on the Milford sound overnight tour and our guide in Hobiton. The actual itinerary once leaving Queenstown and heading north with a rent a car was unrealistic and was based on time lines that did not reflect the actual driving time needed to get from place to place and in some cases left us no time to see or explore the places we driving to see. By putting our trust and dollars in KimKim's local representative, we anticipated better first hand knowlege of what to expect in our travels, and as such we doubt this would be the suggested itinerary. This frustration existed for a 2-3 day period toward the end of our 1st week and resulted in us having to forgo one of our highly anticipated scheduled tours ( Able Tasman ). We found the itinerary in some cases lacked detail of addresses we needed to meet tours, phone numbers needed to reach vendors and inaccurate information. The trip summary on app lacked clarity or was inaccurate on things like breakfast included or to we have to pay ? We had to self manage this trip too much considering we worked with a professional travel agent. For example, I found an error mid-trip with a changed time of event ( we were notifiedby KimKim ) but the balance of our day was not reviewed, and I caught a change that required a change of flights to make it all work. KimKim did accomodate the last minute change, when I brought it to their attention, and rebook flights, update car rentals, drivers, etc. but it should have been caught by them in the first place as this was a disruption that had a lot of components.

We’re so glad to hear that many of your experiences — especially Milford Sound with Jamie and your Hobbiton tour — were real highlights of your trip.

Some of the self‑drive days can feel longer than expected, especially when roadworks, weather, or seasonal traffic slow things down. While the driving times were included in the itinerary, we understand how these conditions can affect the rhythm of a day, and we appreciate you letting us know how it felt on your end.

For the Nelson to Abel Tasman day, we had noted the one‑hour drive and talked through the later arrival it would create. You had confirmed that this timing would still work, so we were sorry to hear the tour didn’t go ahead — especially since it seemed the decision was based on information that wasn’t quite accurate.

We also want to sincerely apologize for the oversight with the flight‑time change. Although we were glad to reorganize everything quickly, it should have been caught earlier.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts — feedback like yours genuinely helps us improve. Most of all, we hope you carry home wonderful memories of your time in Aotearoa.

Kathrin was amazing. She found a way to accommodate all of our idiosyncratic preferences and crafted a 16-day NZ adventure that was just right. If we had merely taken the trip we signed up for, we would have been delighted. Yet she had surprises waiting for us all along the way. Several of our lodgings had welcome messages, treats, wine, chocolates--something to welcome us and congratulate us on our anniversary. Five of them (!) provided upgrades at no extra charge, each one better than the last. Then came the ultimate above-and-beyond from Kathrin: She proactively alerted us that our ferry was likely to be cancelled and counseled us to jump to a flight instead. We were able to book a flight within minutes of the cancellation and saved the rest of our trip. She stayed in contact throughout our trip just to make sure everything went smoothly. She was aces.

Your A.I. alternative can't do any of that. We are sticking with Kathrin. Six stars out of five.

Murchison

Six stars out of five. We cannot find words to express how delighted we were with our stay at Murchison Lodge. Phillip is the consummate host and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. It was a highlight of our stay in New Zealand. It's the sort of place that just makes you want to settle in and not move. We should add that the homemade breakfast was the best of our 16 days in NZ. Our only disappointment was that we had to leave.

Fox Glacier Lodge
Fox Glacier

Great location and very comfortable. It was kind of like staying in our own little cabin. The office even offered a free glowworm walk for anyone interested in the evening--just to be nice. We really enjoyed it.

River Birches Lodge
Turangi

We don't have the words to describe how beautiful River Birches Lodge is. The design is impeccable. Jason and Rebeca are great hosts, warm and friendly, and made us feel right at home. The room was very well appointed, and the cedar hot tub was an unexpected bonus. They included a lovely breakfast each day and provided great advice about our trip. We stayed in a wide variety of places during our 16 days in NZ (many of them very nice), and by far River Birches was the nicest of the lot. Six stars out of five.

Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise - Real NZ Wanderer
Manapouri

We had a great time. We basically had the sound to ourselves during this trip. There were only 28 other guests onboard the boat, so it never felt crowded. It was rather cozy, actually. And there was SO MUCH FOOD. What a nice surprise. This was one of the best things we did on our trip to NZ.

They gave us a large, corner room that was very comfortable. It's easy to see why people might love this place for its funky decor. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The one downside was that the bathroom was very small, surprising given the size of our room. Otherwise, it was an interesting change of pace.

The hike was beautiful. It was a little harder than we expected (very hilly), but not too difficult. Our one (small) regret is that we allowed too much time to complete it, so we waited around a long time for our boat. If we did it again, we would have scheduled the earlier boat. As it was, we had an extra hour on a beautiful, sunny beach, so no one should feel sorry for us.

It looks cooler on paper. The geothermal site is smaller and much less interesting than Orakei Korako, which was well worth the detour in our opinion. The mud bath was just OK, in part because you have to sit out in the cold air while the mud dries on you. It was interesting, but we would probably not do this one again.

And the food was plentiful, with a great variety on the prix fixe menu. Just delightful.

One of the top activities on the trip, island is idyllic, and the road passes several beaches where we swam, and some wineries. E-bikes were fun to ride.

e-bikes in top condition, lines to rent bikes short

A walking tour visiting varying ponds and steaming geysers. Fascinating geological/historical venue.

Quality of Experience
The ponds are amazing, the colors an artist's palette. The geyser triggered by soap was a bit kitschy

Great for Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fans, too long and crowded for the rest. Feels like Univeral Studios. I guess you need to go to check it off the list, because everyone asks if you've been.

Another of our top trips. We were bused to a different location because the water level was low, but our travel companion Harry as well as the other guides were very amusing and the journey went quickly. The rapids were quite exciting to traverse, and the other swimming/jumping added to the fun.

Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise (self -drive - departs from Manapouri - operated by Real NZ)
Manapouri

It was a long day: driving to the ferry terminal, ferrying across the lake, then busing across the mountain pass before boarding the ferry on Doubtful Sound. The Sound was beautiful, and we saw dolphins and porpoises, but after all the other beautiful lakes and scenery we had seen before it was a bit anticlimactic given the difficulty of access. We had originally booked the overnight cruise, but it was cancelled due to mechanical issues. Kathryn jumped through hoops to help us rebook an overnight in Te Anai followed by the day cruise. I suspect the overnight cruise would have been a better experience.

Quality of Experience
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Good, but perfunctory service. Nothing special
Transport
Move the lake closer to Queenstown, or fly if only a single day trip.

The itinerary presented to us was exactly what we wanted and Kathrin did a great job of setting up the trip. There was an unexpected glitch in that the overnight cruise on Doubtful sound had to be cancelled because of a mechanical problem with the boat.

I don't have the words to say how much I enjoyed our trip through New Zealand. Yes, I could have booked everything myself and saved a little money. But Kathrin booked us into wonderful hotels I'd never have considered, and got us on interesting side trips. We were on the Marlborough wine tasting and cruise when we got a call letting us know our 9:30 ferry to Wellington had been canceled. Kathrin quickly got us on an earlier trip with a different cruise line. That alone was worth the extra having an agent cost. We had to get up early, but that was so much better than missing a day in Wellington and our trip to Weta Workshop. Another couple on the cruise were supposed to take the same ferry. They got no notification at all, and the last we saw of them, were still trying to book a ferry. So a big thumbs up to Kathrin.

You don't have to just accept kimkim's suggested itinerary. We swapped a trip to Willowbank Animal Sanctury for the suggested whale watching, and booked a suburban B&B near Zealandia instead of staying at a downtown Wellington hotel.

Highlights of the trip were seeing glow worms in Te Anau, the native birds on Kapiti Island, Weta Workshop, Zealandia, and the Hobbiton movie set. We came home with nearly 6,000 photos. We tried to photograph as many of the native birds as possible.

Don't let the no photography rule scare you away from the Te Anau glow worm cave. You can't get a good photo on a tour anyway. Just enjoy the view.

Milford and Doubtful Sound were pretty, but we didn't see them at their best. We hit a freak rainless period, so the smaller waterfalls and mist weren't there. If you like wildlife, stop at the Te Anau bird sanctuary. The DOC removed some of the birds, but they still have takehe. We took the path along the water and saw several small song birds.

Dunedin was the one bad spot. We got back from the overnight Doubtful Sound Cruise (where they treat you like royalty and the food is delicious and plentiful) about 12:30. By the time we battled the traffic and got to our downtown hotel, it was too late to see anything. On the plus side, we had a fabulous room with a washer and dryer.
We skipped the Otago Peninsula in favor of the Moeraki boulders, arriving about 7 am. We got all the photos we wanted before busloads of tourists arrived and climbed all over the rocks.

Christchurch was lovely. We rode the tram to the Botanic Gardens, where I regreted not taking a zoom lens to photograph the birds. The next day we took the train to Arthur's Pass. The food on the train was excellent, and we enjoyed hiking.

On the way to Blenheim, we visited Willowbanks. It's small but well designed, with a nice assortment of animals. They have heritage farm animals and native New Zealand animals. We didn't manage to see a kea in Fiordland, but saw several there, as well as 3 kiwis.

We did the aforementioned wine tasting and cruise in Blenheim.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Weta Workshop in Wellington. Our second day we took the cable car up and walked back through the gardens. Since we were there at 7:30, parking was no problem. We arrived at Zealandia by 9:30. It's a large predator free park in the middle of Wellington. We were struck by the lack of birdsong in New Zealand. Imported predators have nearly wiped out the birds. Zealandia was full of song.

Kapiti Island was even better. The birds were almost deafening, and because they live on a predator free island and are never hunted, they were fairly easy to photograph. We spent the morning in the older reforested area. In midafternoon we moved to the other side, where the lodge and cabins are located. We made the mistake of hiking the Boulder Beach trail. It had just reopened, so maybe we saw it at its worst. The first part is easy. Then you hit rocks and driftwood, and no trail markers. We finally turned around and went back.
The people who run the lodge are so kind. The food was delicious.
That night we did a red light walk and saw two kiwis. We slept in a glamping tent with a fabulous view.

By Tongariro Park we were wearing out. Luckily we stayed at the River Lodge, a beautiful old hose out in the country. Daniel, the landlord, must be the busiest man on earth. He's very outgoing and cheerful, and makes a great breakfast.
We had a nice view of Mt. Ruapehu from the balcony, and walked along the river photographing birds. We did a little hiking to see waterfalls.

We went to the two Waitomo caves that allow photography. One is a small limestone cave with nice formations. The other, Ruakuri has a little of everything; formations, glow worms, and plain walls.

Our last stop was Hobbiton. Depending on what you prefer, the light is better for photography in early morning. We opted for the nightly banquet, where you get 4.5 hours instead of 2.5, and get to see the buildings lit up at night. The food is great, but try to sit at the end of a table. Most of the food is placed there, and at least at our table, nobody passed it around. We had to stay an extra day to get banquet tickets, and it was so worth it. The perfect end to a perfect trip.

I’m especially delighted that the hotels, experiences, and little logistical rescues along the way helped everything flow smoothly—moments like the ferry change are exactly why I love being part of someone’s travels. A few activities needed to be rescheduled because of weather, but the rescheduling process went very smoothly for the most part. One minor glitch was that the folks with the Milford Sound tour were trying to reach us because of a weather cancellation, but they did not have contact information for us so we did not find out about the cancellation until we went to check in for the activity. It would have been helpful to know about the cancellation earlier in the day so we could have make some other plans for that day.

A few of our favorite activities were Skydiving in Queenstown, the Fly/Cruise/Fly trip to Milford Sound, and the Glowworm evening activity in Rotorua.

I really appreciate your understanding around the weather‑related changes. New Zealand certainly likes to keep us on our toes. I’m glad most of the rescheduling went smoothly, and I’m sorry about the Milford Sound communication hiccup. That’s genuinely helpful feedback, and I’ll make sure we tighten up that process so future travellers get updates as early as possible.

It was a pleasure helping you plan this adventure, and I’m so glad you enjoyed your time here. If you ever feel like exploring more of Aotearoa, I’d love to help you craft your next journey.
