Patrick Mathay

Just an adventure-minded traveler looking to share the cultural richness of Ecuador with people interested in this amazing place.

I travel to challenge myself and connect with people, with an emphasis on reflection and personal growth. I believe in helping others and mixing in a little old school adventure along the way.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"Ecuador, Guatemala, mountaineering, general adventuring, cultural immersion, coffee and cacao"

How did you get involved in travel?

"I didn't even own a passport until I was 21. I caught the bug once I studied abroad in Spain in 2008 and never looked back.

Since then, I've done 6000 kilometer bicycle tours, summited 6000 meter volcanos, rafted the amazon, skied the equator, and scuba'd with sharks in the Galapagos. Adventure and amazing people keep me coming back."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"The earth isn't a perfect sphere - its spinning makes it bulge in the middle - so the closest point to space is the summit of Volcán Chimborazo in Ecuador. One day in 2015, my mountaineering friend said he needed a climbing partner. I'm in! I fell in love with the entire Chimborazo experience- driving through the high páramo ecosystem, watching the passing herds of grazing vicuña, bunking in the mountain refuge, the crampons, the altitude... As we summited at dawn and watched mountain's enormous shadow stretch hundreds of miles into the amazon basin, my friend told me to reach out and touch the stars. It was a moment I would wish for anyone- and anyone with the right training, motivation, and guide can have it. "
