Best of Dordrecht

Top itineraries and travel advice in and around Dordrecht
Going strong since the 13th century, Dordrecht wears its history with pride. Well-preserved buildings along the city’s old canals attest to Dordrecht’s role as an important mercantile center. Apart from exploring the medieval attractions around town, Dordrecht has canal-side plazas and terrace cafes, along with wine bars and even a 150-year-old distillery that’s still in operation. The city also makes a great base for nature escapes in the countryside.

Just east of Dordrecht stretches one of the largest protected reserves in the Netherlands. The Biesbosch National Park features an impressive area of tidal wetlands (among the largest in Europe), where you can see beavers, egrets and white-tailed eagles, among other wildlife. Guided excursions by canoe take you along the meandering waterways past tiny islands, willow forests and grasslands. Dordrecht is also within easy reach of the centuries-old windmills of Kinderdijk, and you can get there by waterbus or even bicycle (about an hour’s ride) from the center.
