Renting a car to make the approximately 175-mile (282km) journey from Iceland's capital city of Reykjavik to the remote Westfjords region is the best option to maximize exploration of the gorgeous scenery and abundant natural attractions. Embarking on a group tour is also an option, however, using public transport to adventure in the fjords isn't possible due to the somewhat isolated location.

Those interested in off the beaten path ventures that include bird watching, waterfalls, hiking, and epic coastal scenery will find paradise in the Westfjords. Uncover natural hot springs that you may have all to yourself. The opportunity to spot puffins and even arctic foxes is a possibility as well.

If you have a full week, this itinerary highlights some of the top spots in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Westfjords, and Golden Circle.

By Car

Duration: 7-9 hours

Depending on your destination in the Westfjords region, the drive can take as little as four hours from Reykjavik, or as long as you'd like based on how much you stop and explore. On the way, hiking to Glymur waterfall, viewing the waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, and snacking at a seaside cafe in the village of Borgarnes are worthwhile stops. For those with extra time, a detour to drive the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is highly recommended. Allow for a full day to do this.

Driving the fjord roads in this region of Iceland is an adventure within itself, and travelers should plan to visit the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs, Rauðasandur red sand beach, and the well-known waterfall, Dynjandi for the ultimate experience. Visit the witchcraft museum in Hólmavík and get your seafood fix in the village of Isafjordur.

Hikers will want to hit the trails within the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, on the northwest tip of the Westfjords. It's only accessible by boat from Isafjordur during the summer months. Kayaking and wildlife viewing are other popular activities here as well.

By Group Tour

Duration: Multi-day

Multi-day group tours that include the Westfjords region are available leaving from Reykjavik as well.
