Boat Trip to Glacier Grey

Overview

There are many natural wonders located in Chile's portion of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, and Glacier Grey is one of them. A catamaran excursion on the Grey III pays a visit to Glacier Grey, which feeds the lake of the same name. The boat travels across the lake and stops close to the glacier, giving passengers a prime vantage point to snap photos of its massive ice walls, which reach heights of 40 meters (131 feet). The Grey III then continues to the other side of the lake, where passengers disembark and make their way to the Bigfoot Basecamp to begin an epic hike on the surface of the glacier.

This portion of the trip starts at Islatak Island with a hike up a glacial moraine. It takes an hour to reach the ice, at which point folks will gear up and learn the basics and safety protocols of glacier hikes from a pro guide. Equipped with an ice ax, crampons, helmet, and harness, it's then time to walk onto the Grey Glacier, hiking over blue crevasses, meltwater streams, and passing alongside ice caves. It's truly a singular experience.
