Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Anavilhanas' viewing platform is a great spot to fully appreciate the immensity of the Anavilhanas National Park, which the property adjoins.
- Even though Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge is quite secluded, you'll have WiFi access, and it's only a 5-10-minute drive to the nearby town of Novo Airão.
- Opt for a Villa Bacurau unit for added luxury, including a private plunge pool, a second bedroom, and more lounging space.
- Explore the Río Negro with a swim directly from the property, or borrow a canoe or kayak, or relax at the water's edge from the floating bar with a cocktail in hand.
- Every detail, from the lodge's architecture to its culinary approach, connects you to the Amazon's culture, biodiversity, and traditions.
- Kids are considered here, with child-friendly menu options, a secondary all-ages-welcome pool (there's also an adult-only option), and roomy accommodations.
- You can forget applying the insect repellent, as Río Negro's acidic pH makes it difficult for mosquitoes to reproduce.
- The lodge's remote location may be tiresome for some to reach—3 hours northwest from Manaus by vehicle or a 40-minute seaplane ride.
Authenticity
Anavilhanas reflects the traditional rustic caboclo-style architecture common in remote areas of the Amazon, with stilted, thatched-roof cottages made from natural, locally sourced materials. Guests will find handcrafted furnishings and design elements throughout that further the aesthetic. The restaurant celebrates regional culture through its menu—each meal offering a choice between Amazon-inspired dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from the property and international favorites. A small boutique also showcases artisan crafts made by nearby Indigenous communities, while the spa's treatments feature essential oils derived from native plants.
Location
Tucked between the jungle (opposite the UNESCO-protected Anavilhanas National Park) and the banks of the Río Negro, Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge is roughly a 10-minute drive from Novo Airão's town center and the nearest community. Here, you'll find a handful of cafés, restaurants, grocery stores, and shops, while it's a close to 3-hour drive northwest from Manaus. Transfers by minivan or seaplane from Manaus are available (for a cost).
Rooms & Bathrooms
Anavilhanas' 24 guestrooms are designed in the traditional caboclo style, built on stilts with natural materials to blend into the surrounding dense jungle. Rooms feature large windows and/or verandas (complete with hammocks) that invite the sights and sounds of the rainforest inside. Interiors are simple, with wooden furnishings, warm lighting, neutral tones, and modern amenities (like WiFi and ceiling fans). Bathrooms are spacious and well-appointed with eco-friendly products supporting the lodge's sustainable ethos. Cottages and Bungalows provide single, double, or triple beds, whereas the more spacious Panoramics and Villa Bacurau can sleep parties of four. For utter seclusion and a private plunge pool, opt for Villa Bacurau.
Amenities
Guests can unwind in two pools overlooking the Río Negro—one adults-only—or relax in the thatched-roof lounge, where travelers can gather to connect. The restaurant serves a refined mix of Amazonian flavors and international cuisine prepared by local cooks, while the floating bar invites guests to swim, paddle, or sip cocktails on the river. Other highlights include a massage room with treatments that take advantage of the Amazon's natural gifts (rosewood and copaiba massage oils), a small gym, a scenic viewpoint over Anavilhanas National Park, and a small on-site boutique selling handcrafted goods made by local artisans and Indigenous communities.
Family-Friendliness
Beyond swinging in a hammock and falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle, Anavilhanas offers a family-friendly experience where travelers of all ages can explore the rainforest together through guided jungle walks, canoeing, and nighttime wildlife spotting. Activities are adapted for children to match their pace and curiosity, and the in-house restaurant features a varied kids' menu to please younger palates. Families can stay side by side in adjoining Cottages (with single, double, or triple beds) or opt for the more spacious Panoramics or Villa Bacurao options (sleeping up to four guests). The latter offers more privacy and even more room with two separate suites, and has a plunge pool that the kids will love.
Wildlife
You may be lucky enough to see some Amazonian wildlife, including pink and gray river dolphins, alligators/caimans (especially on night tours), and numerous bird species like macaws and toucans. The lodge also offers activities like piranha fishing and jungle hikes, where you might see sloths, snakes, including tree boas, and insects and arachnids, like tarantulas.
Sustainability
Integrating eco-conscious design with community-led conservation, the lodge's stilted, thatched-roof architecture minimizes impact on the forest, while solar energy powers much of the property—including boats that glide silently along Río Negro. What began in 2006 as 96 acres (39 ha) of protected land has grown to over 1,285 acres (520 ha) of preserved rainforest, serving as both a private reserve and a base for scientific research that has even led to the discovery of new species. Most of the team, too, comes from nearby communities, helping drive local education, recycling initiatives, and small-scale farming projects—including the hotel's own agroecological farm, which supplies organic, farm-to-table meals.
