Asalem, Ilha Grande
Rustic island retreat with waterfront suites, locally-sourced cuisine, and an open-air bar
Stunning Views, Amazing food and services. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We Loved every minute of our stay there.
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You'll be located right at the water's edge on Ilha Grande, and a 20-minute (or an 8-minute boat ride) from the island village of Vila do Abraão.
- Each self-contained, air-conditioned suite includes a private balcony or terrace, hammocks, and sea views.
- Breakfast is included in the rate, and lunch and dinner options include fresh-caught seafood and produce grown on-site.
- You can relax on the waterfront sun deck, arrange for kayak and canoe rentals, or watch the sunset with a tropical cocktail from the open-air bar.
- There are no TVs in the rooms, and the island can experience intermittent WiFi outages.
- All units and common areas are connected by stairs, and there are no accessible rooms.
Authenticity
Owned and managed by a mother/son team, this simple, eight-unit pousada keeps things eco-friendly and hyper-local. Water is heated by solar panels, common areas are lit with lanterns and candles, cocktails are made with tropical fruit grown on-site, and dinners feature a catch of the day delivered to the private dock by local fishermen. The simple, contemporary architecture is arranged in a tiered design to make the most of the waterfront setting; reclaimed timber decking lines the water's edge, and self-contained suites are tucked into the lush Atlantic rainforest above.
Location
Asalem sits on the north shore of Ilha Grande, 95 miles (153 km) southwest of Rio de Janeiro. The village of Vila do Abraão is a 20-minute walk away, and you can access most of the island's 100 beaches by boat or on foot. The fastest way to reach the island from the mainland is via a private transfer, which takes you to the small town of Conceição do Jacarei and connects you with a quick 20-minute boat ride to the hotel's dock. You can also catch the 1.5-hour ferry from Angra dos Reis to Abraão Village, where the hotel's complimentary water taxi service will pick you up.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Each of the eight suites includes a private terrace or balcony and sea views. Premiums are closest to the water and feel the most sophisticated, with king beds, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and open-plan bathrooms. Standards sit a level up, with a small lounge area with a single bed and a mezzanine-style sleeping area above. The fisherman-style Chalet is perched at the top of the property and adds a kitchenette and a separate living area with a sofa bed. All units include air-conditioning and WiFi.
Amenities
This is a rustic, simple stay, so amenities are limited. Breakfast is included in the room rate and includes hand-picked tropical fruits, fresh-squeezed juices, and homemade cakes and jams served buffet style on the waterfront deck. Lunch and dinner menus change daily depending on the season and guests' preferences, but you can expect fresh, simple dishes based around a seafood catch of the day and vegetables grown on the property. There's also an open-air bar that serves caipirinhas and other tropical cocktails during happy hour, a terrace with sun loungers, and a floating dock for swimming and sunbathing.
Family-Friendliness
Children can only be accommodated in some room types, including the Chalet (the best fit for families with its extra sofa bed, kitchenette, and secluded setting). Be aware that all units are accessed via stairs, so this isn't an ideal spot for young kids and strollers.
