Hotel NOI Casa Atacama, San Pedro de Atacama

4.9 (7 reviews) Luxury
Sustainable desert escape with contemporary rooms, an outdoor pool, on-site restaurant, and a small spa

Overview

Hotel NOI Casa Atacama lies just outside the center of San Pedro de Atacama, the main hub for excursions into the lunar landscapes and salt flats of Chile's northern deserts. Opened in 2009, this was the region's first sustainable hotel, utilizing traditional adobe architecture and solar power to create a luxurious getaway with a light footprint. Rooms are spacious and simple, with wood floors and glass doors that open onto private courtyards or terraces. Guests can grab a pisco sour at the poolside bar, book a massage at the on-site spa, or sample regional flavors and Chilean wines at the renowned restaurant.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Stay at northern Chile's first sustainable hotel, designed to blend in with its spectacular desert surroundings.
  • The location puts you within strolling distance of downtown San Pedro, the regional hub for excursions into the Atacama's otherwordly valleys and arid salt flats.
  • Rooms and suites channel a simple, desert-inspired aesthetic, with wood floors, whitewashed walls, and traditional textiles and art.
  • Cool off with a swim in the outdoor pool, or head to the on-site spa for a sauna session and a massage with local herbs and clay.
  • The on-site restaurant pairs dishes highlighting regional ingredients and producers with an impressive Chilean wine list.
Cons
  • Rooms aren't air-conditioned, though ceiling fans (and the hotel's architecture) help keep things cool during hotter months.

Authenticity

Hotel NOI Casa Atacama's design was inspired by its arid desert surroundings, combining the region's ancient building techniques with modern technology to create a simple yet luxurious getaway—and the first sustainable hotel in Chile's far north. The low, one-story structure utilizes packed-earth and adobe to blend with the Atacama landscape and help keep the interiors cool, while native grasses and plants require little water to flourish among the walkways and courtyards. Inside, textiles, art, and furniture are dotted around the guest rooms and lounge areas to showcase the skill of local artisans.

Location

You'll stay at the southern edge of San Pedro de Atacama, the region's main hub for activities and excursions into the nearby Valle de la Luna and Salar de Atacama. Surrounded by the Cordillera de la Sal and the towering Licanbur volcano, this small town feels like a true desert outpost, with dusty dirt streets and traditional adobe architecture. It's a 10-minute walk to the main street (lined with shops, restaurants, and adventure tour companies); nearby, you'll find the cobbled town square and Chile's second-oldest church. The closest airport is Calama, about 60 miles (100 km) north.

Rooms & Bathrooms

All 45 rooms and suites channel a simple, desert-inspired aesthetic—think wood floors and whitewashed walls decorated with traditional textiles and handmade furniture. Pillowtop beds are dressed with Egyptian cotton sheets and goose-down pillows, and large sliding glass doors are equipped with blackout blinds for a good night's sleep. Deluxe units are the smallest and open onto their own private interior courtyards; suites offer more space and private terraces (some add wood-burning fireplaces or outdoor showers). Bathrooms are modern and bright, with marble accents, walk-in showers, and organic toiletries.

Amenities

Guests congregate around the central courtyard, where a small pool and hot tub are surrounded by loungers, cabanas, and an al fresco bar (the custom pisco sours are a specialty). On-site restaurant Casa Paniri is considered one of the best in town, with a menu inspired by sustainable ingredients sourced from local farms and an extensive Chilean wine list. Come morning, a simple breakfast buffet is served in the same space. After a day of desert activities, head to the small spa for a sauna, steam room, and wellness treatments based around desert botanicals and Indigenous practices.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at Hotel NOI Casa Atacama. Interconnecting rooms are the best fit for families, and extra beds can be added to rooms for an additional fee.

Sustainability

The hotel was designed with sustainability in mind, using traditional architectural and building practices that work with the desert's harsh climate. Extensive solar energy panels to help generate electricity and heat water throughout the property, and interiors are cooled by thick walls and shaded overhangs instead of air-conditioning. Organic vegetable gardens on-site supply the kitchen, and gray water is used for irrigation to minimize waste.
