Le Grand Bé, Saint-Malo
Cosmopolitan stay inside Saint-Malo's historic walls, with crisp, modern rooms, a vaulted spa, on-site dining, and rooftop sea views
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You really can't beat the location: Le Grand Bé sits inside Saint-Malo's fortified old town, putting the ramparts, cobbled streets, restaurants, shops, and Bon-Secours Beach within an easy walk.
- The hotel is relatively small, with just 55 rooms and suites, which gives it a more intimate feel; our team found the welcome (and staff) particularly warm, friendly, and personal.
- There's plenty of local character beneath the contemporary design. The building previously served as Saint-Malo's courthouse, sub-prefecture, and tax office, and you can still spot remnants of its past, including old treasury features and 17th-century stone vaults in the wellness area.
- Rooms are surprisingly spacious for an "intra-muros" hotel. Historic buildings inside the city walls often come with compact quarters, but rooms here start around 215 square feet, with even larger suites available, including Junior Suite and Family Sea Glimpse Room options.
- The vaulted Les Arcades wellness area is an atmospheric spot to recharge after walking the ramparts, while the lounge bar, restaurant, and terrace give you inviting places to linger without leaving the hotel.
- In good weather, head up to the seasonal rooftop for wine, Champagne, oysters, and sweeping views across Saint-Malo's rooftops, the sea, and the Malouine Islands.
- Parking is available, a particularly useful perk when you're staying inside Saint-Malo's historic center, where arriving by car and parking can otherwise be tricky.
- Le Grand Bé holds Green Key certification, making it a good option for travelers who value hotels taking measurable steps toward more environmentally responsible operations.
- This is a contemporary take on Saint-Malo; travelers looking for antique-filled rooms and an overtly traditional Breton aesthetic may find the interiors a little too modern.
Authenticity
Le Grand Bé occupies a historic building on Place des Frères Lamennais, where Saint-Malo's courthouse, sub-prefecture, and later tax office once stood. Its 2017 transformation preserved reminders of that past, including former treasury chests now incorporated into the luggage room and 17th-century stone vaults beneath the wellness area. Contemporary touches, such as Philippe Lucazeau's dramatic wavelike installation suspended above the atrium, keep the interiors from feeling overly traditional while still drawing on Saint-Malo's maritime character. Even the hotel's name is distinctly local, borrowed from the tidal island of Grand Bé, where Saint-Malo-born writer François-René de Chateaubriand is buried.
Location
The hotel sits within Saint-Malo's historic ramparts, placing you right in the cobbled heart of the old corsair city. Bon-Secours, Le Môle, and L'Éventail/Sillon beaches, the ramparts, shops, restaurants, and many of the city's main sights are all within a short walk. From the ramparts, guests can look toward the tidal Grand Bé island, the Malouine Islands, and Bon-Secours' seawater swimming pool (a 5-minute walk). Meanwhile, the hotel's seasonal rooftop offers another perspective over the old town's rooftops and out toward the sea. There's on-site parking as well as an EV charging station.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Le Grand Bé has 55 rooms and suites with sleek interiors that reference Saint-Malo through understated maritime-inspired details in textiles and metallic fixtures. Classic Rooms are the smallest option (though comfortable for a typical European hotel) with queen beds, while Deluxe Rooms offer more space and a choice of twin, queen, or king beds; Junior Suites, Suite Terrace, and Family Sea Glimpse Rooms exceed 323 square feet (30 sq m) and add a sofa and king bed. All rooms include air-conditioning, Nespresso machines, bathrobes, slippers, and either a shower or bathtub. Some accommodations look across the rooftops of the old town, with the Suite Terrace and Family Sea Glimpse rooms offering terraces, the latter providing a sea view.
Amenities
The hotel's standout amenity is Les Arcades, a wellness space tucked beneath atmospheric 17th-century stone vaults and offering a program of personalized treatments as well as a small gym of workout equipment. Guests can also stop by Le Petit Bé lounge bar for seasonal dishes, sharing plates, and cocktails, or sit outside on its terrace in good weather. On Sundays, Restaurant Le Petit Bé serves an extensive brunch with seafood, hot dishes, salads, and pastries, while the seasonal rooftop opens in the evening for Champagne, wine, oysters, and sea views.
Family-Friendliness
Families are welcome, and the larger room categories, such as the Junior Suite, Suite Terrace, and Family Sea Glimpse Room, accommodate three guests and a crib (available upon request). The central location is particularly handy for families, since beaches, the ramparts, restaurants, and sightseeing are all within easy reach without relying heavily on a car. Bon Secours Beach, for example, and its natural seawater pool are only a short walk away. Dogs are welcome, though families traveling with them should note that pets aren't permitted around the breakfast or Sunday brunch buffets.
Sustainability
Le Grand Bé holds Green Key certification, reflecting its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations (as evidenced in the hotel's Environmental Charter) through water and energy conservation systems, recycling, environmental protection, upholding a sustainable purchasing policy from like-minded suppliers, and training and informing employees and guests about the environment and offering sustainable solutions.
