Hanna Kravchenko

I'm originally from Ukraine, but I've always been fascinated by the beauty of the Nordic countries. My passion for travel began with my first solo adventure at the age of 16, and since then I have been discovering the beauty of our world. In planning trips, I strive to balance seeing as much as possible and having time to enjoy what I see. I am one of those travelers who return to their favorite places to get to know them better and find something new each time.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"I specialize in self-drive tours in Iceland and Faroe Islands. "

How did you get involved in travel?

"Born into a family of tour guide, my passion for travel and tourism was nurtured from the very beginning. I began my career as an operations manager for a cruise line, then moved on to become an air ticket manager, before diving into travel planning and organization. My first visit to Iceland was in 2014, and I've been drawn back ever since."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"I will always remember northern lights over our cabin near Tromso, first flight by helicopter on the Faroe Islands and finding an abandoned house which belongs to my friends' family in Westfjords of Iceland. I dream about midnight sun kayaking in Greenland. "

Jeep Tour of Askja Northern Highlands

Deep in Iceland's Northern Highlands is the Askja area, where Mount Herðubreið, a majestic table mountain of a truly peculiar shape, acts as the gateway to the wild region. The peak's dark silhouette is unmistakable, even from very far away. Still, the area's most precious gem is Askja itself,...

Skógafoss Waterfall

One of Iceland's all-time favorite cascades is Skógafoss Waterfall, thanks to its width and power—standing in front of it is proof enough! In addition, you'll often find a rainbow curving through Skógafoss' mist. Skógafoss is just a 2-hour drive from Reykavik or about 30 minutes from Vik. Just...

Birdwatching & Hiking the Látrabjarg Cliffs

Látrabjarg is one of the largest bird cliffs in Iceland, located at the westernmost point of Europe in the Westfjords region of Iceland. The cliffs stretch up to nearly 1,500 feet (441 m) high and are almost 9 miles (14 km) long. These steep, vertical cliffs are home to millions of birds in the...

Iceland was amazing! Tons of waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes! Its heaven for the outdoorsy type! Hanna was the agent we worked with to plan the trip and we really enjoyed everything we had planned. The lodging she booked us in throughout the week was perfect for our family of 5! Really enjoyed the waterfall Seljalandfoss, the glacier lagoon zodiac boat tour, swimming at the Blue Lagoon and Sky lagoon and had 2 days at the end of the trip to enjoy the charming town of Reykavik! This was a high school graduation gift for my son. it was his choice and he loved it!

My daughter (10) and I did an 11 day Ring Road trip. We started having not much of an idea of what we wanted to do, and Hanna worked with us to understand our interests and propose the best itinerary. At Hanna's advice, we started planning early, and were able to book the exact type of hotels and guesthouses that we wanted, and the tours that we were most interested in. During the trip we had a small issue with our car and Hanna and the team helped liaise with the rental company and got it all fixed in no time. We saw zero interruptions to our schedule.

The whole trip was amazing, but some special thoughts/highlights:
- Horseback riding in Egilsstaðir was very special. Helga, the owner of the farm, was very generous with her time and advice, and she seemed to bond with my little girl, which was very special.
- Puffins are the cutest creatures and you can spend hours observing their behaviors! We saw lots in Borgarfjörður Eystri and I just wish we had stayed in town for one night.
- Visiting the Blue Lagoon at opening time (8am) was a great experience and the best way to recover from jet lag. Very few people at that time . We also visited Vok Baths and Myvatn Baths. My daughter made a friend at the Blue Lagoon and we met them again at Vok. We live in the same city, a few minutes drive from each other. What are the odds?!

I now see why people keep going back. So much to see, and so much to learn! We may be reaching out to Kimkim for a next round of Iceland adventures!

This was the least nice hotel we stayed in during our trip. Breakfast was prepackaged, which was different from all the wonderful buffets we experienced at other locations. Having said that, the owner was very nice, and made reservations for us at the local restaurant, which was by the Seal Centre (great place!) and offered great food and views. Even though this was a much more modest guesthouse, it was clean and friendly, and a perfect stop along the route. We enjoyed our stay.

If you're planning to head to Keflavik early to stay the night before a flight don't rush to get there - there isn't much to do especially for young travelers.

There is an upper and lower level, we were on the lower level which felt like walking into a basement with windows right at street level. The toilet ran the entire time we were there which was quite noisy. The kitchen area is a bit cramped, we ate out but our family of 4 could not have sat comfortably around the table. The living room and bedrooms were very spacious however. Street parking was no problem and it was an easy drive to the airport.

Definitely not worth the ~10 minutes off the main road to get to. We felt like we wasted an entire hour of driving and gas back and forth over 2 nights. There were permanent lights on around the perimeter of the building making it very bright at night, so didn't even have the benefit of darkness for Northern Light hunting. Paper thin walls and very small bathroom - no way for more than 1 person to be in at a time.

Authenticity & Character
It was "modern" and "pretty" but I would not say that gives it authenticity or character

We did not see the lights, which we understood going into it but was still disappointing. Our guide (could not pronounce his Icelandic name but translates to reindeer so he said call him "Buck") tried many different locations including turning around at one point when a tip came to head in a different direction. He was very knowledgeable in teaching about the methods behind the "hunt". He was able to capture faint lights above us on a photo, which made it not feel like a total loss. The Jeep-side hot chocolate and cookies were a nice touch.

Our flight was delayed on the way there causing us to miss our booking at the Blue Lagoon. I was able to let Hanna know via email but figured that we would just have to lose our money. We were completely surprised to find out that Hanna was able to rebook us. I really appreciate her efforts to make sure we didn't miss out.

Iceland

Eldhestar is definitely a busy place. But I have to say they are very organized and everyone gets where they need to be. It was raining on the day we went but they provide you will full rain gear and boots which was great. We didn't have to worry about our stuff getting dirty or wet. The team pairs you with a horse based on your experience. The main guide was stern but I think you have to be to keep a group of mostly novice riders safe. Mid way through the ride the guides check on how everyone is doing and offer riding tips which was nice. We did the very basic Siggi tour which was great for the first time being on a horse in a very long time. Basic doesn't mean boring- right away we rode the horses through a small river which was very exciting! At the end I definitely wanted to go riding again- which to me is a sign of a good experience.

Stern, but attentive which is exactly what you what in a horse riding guide. We also had a very nice woman from Sweden who was the guide at the back of the group. Mid way she rode up next to everyone and checked on each person individually to make sure they were comfortable and having a good time.

LOVED this experience! The ride out to the cape is very dramatic over the black sand in an open air tractor. Our guide Matthias was excellent providing interesting history of the area and about the wildlife. We still laugh about his safety tip he shared (which he attributes to his brother) - "if you face plant your face should still land on the cliff, if not your too close" ; ) Excellent advice! You could tell that he cared about his family's connection to the cape.

Quality of Experience
The drive out and walk up the black sand of the cape is unforgettable. The puffins are amazing to see that close up and you get two different views from the front and back of the cape.
