Moonika Apart

I’m originally from Tallinn, Estonia but I lived in Australia for 7 years, which was also the time when I travelled the world and visited over 50 countries. I LOVE travelling and it plays a big role in my life.

Baltic countries and Finland have a special place in my heart. I love that they are small, charming and off the beaten path. I spend most of my winters in Rovaniemi, surrounded by snowy forests and the quiet beauty of Lapland, which constantly reminds me why I love this region so much. Nature is very important to me and there’s plenty of it around here and that’s another reason why I love this region so much and want to introduce it to everyone.

When I create the trips, I like to include the highlights of the destinations that you visit, combined with equally fascinating sites off the beaten path and unique experiences that will help you immerse in new places to learn, grow, and connect. Responsible travel and respect and love for nature is something that I strongly believe in and when I build trips, I try keeping this in mind. I understand that it’s our responsibility to protect and sustain the environment we use and enjoy.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"Primarily the Baltic States and Finland but also northern Norway and Swedish Lapland. We specialise from city sightseeing to more off the beaten path places. Unique, authentic and traditional experiences and nature based tourism. There's a lot of pristine nature around this region so everything related to nature is our speciality. Northern lights tours, sustainable animal tours and nature tours in Lapland. I try to avoid big group tours and touristy activities. "

How did you get involved in travel?

"I moved back to Estonia in 2017 and decided to start my career in the tourism industry. As I was a big traveller myself I wanted to share my passion and knowledge with other people. For some reason the Baltic region is not that known around the world as a travel destination but it has so much to offer and my dream is to introduce the Baltic States and Finland to a wider public. To show, what this region really has to offer but in a sustainable way."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"I love hiking and decided to do a solo hike up in the mountain in Peru. I had my tent and food an everything with me and started the hike. It was a bit scary as I got up in the mountains late at night and decided to camp the first night close to a village. When I woke up the next morning a dog from the nearby village was sitting in front of my tent, waiting for some food. Once I started hiking he followed me and through the whole hike up the mountains he was my companion and guide. When I got lost or walked slowly, he waited for me and showed me the right way. Sometimes it felt like he was annoyed with me that I walked so slow and had to walk back down again to lead me to the right path but he stayed with me the whole time. He slept under my tent every night and we kept each other warm, I gave him some food and he was my guide. Most importantly I felt a bit safer and not so alone with him. He was a perfect companion. After the hike we reach a village on the other side of the mountain and I asked in a local shop there if I could buy some food for the dog and the owner told me that this dog eats better than all the other village dogs. It turned out that he did this as a profession. he was a mountain dog who was walking with all the tourists all the time and clearly they all fed him very well. "

Everything worked out well. We had no hitches, delays, obstacles during our entire 9 days. We went primarily to see the Northern Lights which we did see really well the second night on a guided trip. Made it well worth it. But I think for both my brother and me the highlight of the week might have been learning how to mush huskies. We thought we would get a nice tour of the husky farm and a demonstration but we actually got trained in how to drive a sled and manage the dogs and then we drove the sled for 6 miles! Great experience through "Visit Inari." we also went net fishing/ ice fishing with a biologist on a nearby lake. This was also a great experience learning how to net fish and having the opportunity the ice fish. We caught a trout in the nets and grilled it right on the lake. Our biologist was a great resource about all things nature related. We also visited a reindeer farm which was nice. We got to feed the reindeer and then went to their house and cooked reindeer steaks. Nice experience.
The hotel Inari was fine but the hotel Fabian in Helsinki was excellent. The staff went out of their way to give us directions and help. And a fabulous breakfast! Our tour guide in Helsinki was also excellent.
I would say it's very important to make sure visitors know about renting cold weather gear in Inari. The "Visiting Inari' office was great about it and very flexible and they provided insulated overalls, socks, boots and gloves. These were essential for the dog sledding and the ice fishing and should be clearly spelled out not to go out without them.
I did not go to the Sami museum in Inari but my brother did and he thought that should definitely be an emphasized part of the Inari experience.
And lastly I would like to highlight Moonika who was radically available anytime I reached out to her. months before our visit and during the entire time we were in Finland. I think she answered all my questions within 10 or 15 minutes after I emailed her. And everything worked out perfectly -- all of our drivers were great and friendly and competent.
And let me say the Finnish people were wonderful. Everyone we met was helpful and friendly and eager to answer our questions. I was not prepared that everyone spoke fluent English! Puts the U.S. to shame :)
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone. I have a good friend who is a travel agent in the U.S. and I have given her Moonika's contact info.
Thank you!

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone

The excursions were unforgettable. Dog mushing was such a thrill, ice fishing was peaceful and unique, and spending the day with the a reindeer herders wife, and family was incredibly special and authentic. These experiences, in particular, are something we will never forget.

Every detail was perfectly planned. Our stay at the Hotel Fabian was absolutely wonderful—such a great location in Helsinki and beautiful accommodations—and the cabin in Lapland was truly magical. It felt like something out of a dream and gave us such a unique and memorable experience.

What we appreciated most was how seamless and stress-free everything felt. Even after our flight was cancelled, Moonika stepped right in and adjusted our itinerary. We were able to fully enjoy every moment knowing everything had been so thoughtfully arranged.

Thank you for creating such a meaningful and unforgettable trip for us. This is our second time using kimkim (first trip was to Norway) and we are so grateful- can’t wait to plan our next adventure with you!

Our husky safari with Sustainable Wilderness in Lapland was truly one of the highlights of our entire trip. Our day with the reindeer herder’s wife and family in Lapland was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience—easily a five-star highlight of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like family into a way of life that felt both deeply authentic and incredibly special. Spending time learning about the traditions, culture, and daily rhythms of reindeer herding was so meaningful. Hearing her stories and seeing firsthand the connection between her family and the reindeer gave us a whole new appreciation for this unique lifestyle. It didn’t feel like a “tour” at all—it felt personal, genuine, and heartfelt. The day was beautifully paced, allowing us to really take it all in—from interacting with the reindeer to enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the snowy landscape, then preparing a wonderful reindeer meal followed by some arts and crafts. There was something so calming and grounding about being there, away from everything, immersed in nature and tradition. What made the experience unforgettable was her warmth and hospitality. You could feel the pride she has in her heritage and the joy she takes in sharing it with others. It left a lasting impression on us and gave us memories we will cherish forever. If you’re visiting Lapland, don’t miss this experience. It’s something truly special that goes far beyond sightseeing—it’s a genuine cultural connection that stays with you long after you leave.

Our private glass roof sleigh ride and traditional winter net fishing excursion in Lapland was beyond incredible—truly a five-star plus experience and one we will never forget. From start to finish, everything felt exclusive, peaceful, and perfectly curated. The glass-roof sleigh ride was absolutely magical. Gliding through the quiet, snow-covered landscape while being able to look up at the open sky was such a surreal experience. It felt like we were completely immersed in the Arctic wilderness, with a sense of calm and beauty that’s hard to put into words. The traditional winter net fishing was just as memorable and unique. Learning the process from Arto, hearing the history behind it, and actually experiencing it firsthand gave us such an appreciation for this time-honored way of life. It wasn’t just an activity—it was a meaningful cultural experience that connected us to the land and traditions of Lapland. By far- my favorite excursion ever! What truly elevated this experience was the private, personalized nature of it all. Our guide Arto, was exceptional—knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate. We never felt rushed and were able to fully take in each moment, ask questions, and enjoy the experience at our own pace. Every detail was thoughtfully done, and you could feel the authenticity behind it. Between the serene sleigh ride and the hands-on fishing experience, it struck the perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion. Our Northern Lights tour with professional photos was a decent experience overall—some nice highlights, but a few things that could have been better. Our guide was friendly and tried his best to create a positive atmosphere throughout the evening. He was organized and made sure everyone was taken care of, which we appreciated. The location itself was beautiful, and being out under the Arctic sky was a special experience regardless. We did see the Northern Lights but we did feel like our tour guide was in a rush to drop us off. He drove to 2 different locations and then that was it for the night. We did not get the professional photos until we got back from our trip and they were just ok. They were dark, cut off and a bit blurry. The turnaround time and/or communication around receiving them could have been clearer. It would have helped to know exactly what to expect ahead of time. Overall, it was a good experience but not quite as memorable as some of the other excursions we did in Lapland. With a few improvements and a bit more luck with the aurora, it could easily be a standout experience.

We loved strolling through the local markets, enjoying fresh food and coffee, and taking in the laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere. The blend of historic sites and modern Scandinavian style made everything feel both rich in history and refreshingly current. One of the highlights was simply soaking in the peaceful pace of the city. Helsinki has a calm, welcoming energy that makes you feel instantly at ease, yet there’s still so much to see and do. From the stunning churches to the scenic harbor, every moment felt special. It was the perfect way to experience Finland beyond the winter adventures—highly recommend spending a full day here to truly appreciate everything Helsinki has to offer!

We never felt we were on our own without support. This was our second trip planned by Kim Kim. Other travel agencies could learn from Kim Kim,. Moonika is a treasure. Thank you so much for a wonderful trip.

We were particularly impressed with our hosts in Inari who own the Lapin Tintti Eco-Cabin. Terri and Arto were fabulous hosts providing us with a wonderful place to stay and a terrific ice fishing experience. They treated us like family. We would love to go back and spend more time with them. This i a beautiful cabin in the woods. We cooked our meals, and sat on the deck being part of nature. This is one of the best places I have ever stay in. We had privacy in the solitude of Lan Land, viewing Northern Lights and enjoying nature.

We have dog sledded in other counties. This was the best. The owners were impressive with their loving care of their dogs. They spent a lot of time with us showing us their home and their dogs and sharing their live style and culture,

This is a must do event provided by our cabin hosts. Arto showed us traditional fishing which we participate in. We cooked what we caught on an open fire. What a joy this experience was.

The event was hosted by a wonderful woman. We fed the rain deer, leaning about the Sami tradition of rain deer herding. We were invited into her home, met her family and participated in cooking a rain deer dinner. This was a great day with very nice people.

Some what disappointing only because it was cloudy and the lights were had to find. Our driver did a good job in finding a spot where we were able to have a brief view.

We did not see the Northern Lights, but had wonderful experiences.unfortunately I do not remember all the names but will just reference the experiences. The Ranua Zoo,
The Husky ride, the Reindeer farm, the Amethyst mine, the Snow Hotel, the Arkticum
Museum were all worthwhile.
The accommodations were excellent.
We enjoyed Helinsku as well and the island we visited which was previously a fort.
Lilla was our main contact and was very helpful, answering all our questions.

SnowHotel & Ice Dinner Experience
SnowHotel & Ice Dinner Experience

The SnowHotel & Ice Dinner Experience was not what I expected. While the hotel itself was fascinating, the meal did not feel special. The food was mediocre, and even one of the drivers mentioned the same about the chef. Offering something like a drink, appetizer, or dessert might be a better option than dinner if improvement can't be made.

Amethyst Mine Tour with the Pendolino - Snow Train
Amethyst Mine Tour with the Pendolino - Snow Train
Pyhä

The Amethyst Mine Tour with the Pendolino - Snow Train was not the most impressive activity for us. Despite this, the journey was made worthwhile by the stunning scenery at the top of the mountain, and our driver was fantastic, going out of his way to ensure our comfort. The snow train was less significant compared to the beautiful views and history of the area.

Family Husky Safari

The Family Husky Safari was such an amazing experience, even though it had some hiccups. I handled the huskies myself, and it was quite an adventure. Weather conditions made it a bit challenging as the bus got delayed, and we were rushed through dressing and briefing, but overall, it was great. There was a little disorganization due to delays, which affected the experience slightly. I'd recommend considering private transport for a smoother experience.

The Reindeer Herder Day Experience was absolutely lovely. The homemade reindeer soup was wonderful. The private tour was well worth it and I highly recommend it. The interaction with the reindeer and the kindness of the people made for a memorable day.
