I feel that our guide in Ubud could have been a bit more proactive, we mentioned twice wanting to try the Kopi luwak (as we passed multiple places selling it) but he did not offer for us to stop. At the moment we didn't realize that we could have just asked him to take us there, as it was the first day of our trip so we weren't aware that we had that liberty.
He also did not offer for us to stop at any shops to buy souvenirs, so we ventured out on our own when we got back to the hotel. In hindsight I didn't realize we had the option to ask for further beyond just the biking excursion, so maybe that could have been communicated a bit better, but it did not take away from the trip or experience by any means!

What an incredible trip!

If you ever have the opportunity to travel with KimKim and work with Marc, don’t hesitate—just do it. In an ever-modernizing world, this was the kind of authentic adventure that stays with you forever.

Marc Urban was our trip planner and made so much of this trip possible. My partner had more questions and worries prior to our departure than any two people could address, but Marc persevered. He planned and revised and answered questions and researched options and generally went above and beyond the call travel arranging to make it our dream experience and for that we are grateful.

Our journey began in Jakarta, where we stayed at the extraordinary House of Tugu. From the moment we arrived, we knew we were somewhere special. The team are true masters at creating a memorable guest experience. It is part boutique hotel, part living museum, and everywhere you look there is something beautiful to discover. We enjoyed a couples massage with traditional scrubs and oils, followed by dinner, and it was absolutely magical.

From there, we traveled to Bukit Lawang, determined to see the orangutans. We stayed at Ecolodge Bukit Lawang, which was wonderfully rustic and perfectly immersed in nature. Our guides, Lucy and Sugay, were brilliant. Lucy was an endless source of knowledge about Sumatra, its history, its people, and its agriculture.174c9fd1-20d8-4f7a-b701-b6bb00d6c7ed.JPG

The trip also provided one unforgettable surprise: I was taking a shower with the balcony door open when a macaque decided to help itself to our luggage! I came out to find it enthusiastically going through our bags like someone shopping at Filene’s Basement. 😂 It finally accepted a banana as payment to leave. It remains one of my favorite travel stories.

IMG_3590.jpeg

Unfortunately, I became ill and couldn’t complete the jungle trek to see the orangutans, although my partner was able to continue. Even so, I saw many other monkeys and still had an incredible experience. We toured terraced rice fields in a motorcycle-powered sidecar, watched dark sugar being made from the sap of sugar palms, drank from fresh coconuts, and watched sunrises turn the sky the colors of fire. The lodge restaurant served simple, delicious food, and I highly recommend the becak tour and palm-sugar demonstration.

Our next stop was Plataran Borobudur Resort & Spa in Yogyakarta. What a beautiful contrast—from a rustic ecolodge to a luxurious private villa complete with our own pool. The staff were exceptionally gracious and attentive, the food was outstanding, and the expansive grounds were filled with beautiful surprises, including rehabilitated local animals and a koi pond.

IMG_3708.jpeg

The views were breathtaking. In one direction, we could see Borobudur; in another, an enormous jungle-covered ridge rose dramatically into the sky. Our guides were consistently prompt, warm, and knowledgeable, taking us effortlessly from temples to towns to palaces. We even enjoyed a private gamelan lesson!

IMG_3710.jpeg
Visiting Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was unforgettable, and Prambanan, the magnificent Hindu temple complex, was equally breathtaking.

Next, we headed to Munduk, which completely changed our perception of Bali. Forget the beaches—this was cool mountain air, lush cloud forests, waterfalls, and remarkable round cabins built on stilts high above a steep valley. Some were even reached by funicular.

Our guide expertly navigated the narrow, winding mountain roads that we would never have attempted ourselves. We hiked through beautiful countryside, explored waterfalls and mountain lakes, and paddled a canoe across a peaceful lake to a hidden temple. We also visited Rumah Desa, where I learned about village life and local cooking and even had the opportunity to plow a rice field with an ox! My partner was unfortunately sick during this portion of the trip, but it became one of my favorite cultural experiences.

IMG_3874.jpeg

From there, we continued to Kappa Senses Ubud, another exceptional property. It is a beautifully subdued and elegant resort, with peaceful facilities, wonderful restaurants, and private bungalows with their own lap pools.

The Sacred Water Temple purification ceremony was one of the highlights of our journey. We also visited the Monkey Forest, which, although popular with tourists, was absolutely beautiful and so much fun.

IMG_3992.jpeg
IMG_4301.jpeg

Rather than rushing to see every temple, we chose to slow down and immerse ourselves in the local culture. I created my own batik artwork and made a silver ring—two experiences and keepsakes I will always treasure.

Then came one of the greatest highlights of the adventure: our liveaboard from Labuan Bajo.

Our new ocean home, the Floresta, was a beautiful, traditional two-masted Indonesian sailing ship. The crew quickly became our friends and could not have been more gracious. Special recognition goes to our onboard concierge, Fansi, and to the charming young woman who prepared all our abundant meals and snacks. Every day, we were treated to multi-course meals featuring delicious local specialties made with fresh ingredients.

IMG_4411.jpg

IMG_4393.jpeg

We visited Komodo National Park, where we saw and photographed several incredible Komodo dragons roaming freely in their natural habitat. We snorkeled along lush underwater cliffs filled with coral and marine life and walked along Pink Beach, where tiny fragments of deep-red coral give the sand its famous rosy color.

IMG_4459.jpeg

IMG_4473.jpeg

One evening, we witnessed something truly unforgettable: tens of thousands of bats emerging from their island caves at sunset and filling the sky as they began their nightly hunt. It was spectacular.

IMG_4579.jpeg

We ended our voyage at Seraya Island, where we enjoyed extraordinary snorkeling and some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets imaginable. If you visit, don’t miss the walk up to the Sunset Bar—the view is worth every step.

IMG_4703.jpeg
Finally, we returned to Jakarta and once again stayed at House of Tugu. Coming back felt like returning home. We were welcomed with tea and a leaf inscribed with the words “Welcome Home,” a simple gesture that perfectly captured the warmth and hospitality we experienced throughout Indonesia.

As wonderful as the destinations were, what made this journey truly unforgettable were the people. Every driver, guide, crew member, and hotel team welcomed us with genuine kindness and pride in their country.

We returned home with incredible memories, new friendships, and a much deeper appreciation for Indonesia’s culture, beauty, and hospitality. We were genuinely sad to leave, but enormously grateful to every person who helped make this adventure so extraordinary.

Thank you to KimKim, Marc, and everyone who made this journey possible. It truly was the adventure of a lifetime.

In the heart of the madness that is Jakarta, a city of 42 million residents, is the peaceful, quiet, opulent, intriguing House of Tugu. This hotel may very well be my favorite hotel in the world, From the moment we arrived, we knew we were somewhere special. The team are true masters at creating a memorable guest experience. Located across from the Old Town Square, it is part delightful boutique hotel and part expansive museum of the arts and artifacts of the many cultures throughout the history of Java and the Indonesian Islands, and everywhere you look there is something beautiful to discover. Private Trip Liveaboard Komodo Boat

We loved our temporary ocean home, The Floresta. It is a classic two-masted Indonesian ship which I think resemble a traditional Chinese junk. The crew became our friends. Special recognition goes out to our onboard concierge, Fansi, and the charming young woman who prepared all of our abundant meals and snacks. We were fed multi-course meals of local specialties with fresh ingredients from the area every day. Our shipboard travels covered many. Not surprising as Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands. We made a visit to the famous Komodo Island National Park, where we saw and photographed several Komodo dragons in their unenclosed habitat. We snorkeled along lush and fauna-filled underwater cliffs. We walked along the Pink Beach, an island beach whose sand is colored by the blood red coral from a nearby reef. We watched sunrises, starry nights and one remarkable sundown wherein tens of thousands of bats flew out of their island caves and into the sky to start their night of hunting flying insects. It was a wonderful trip with some wonderful people. The crew of the Floresta are a joy. Terima kasih!

We stayed at Hotel Anara Kualananmu for just one night. It was beautiful, peaceful and very well maintained. In the morning we were met by the crew of our liveaboard boat. The hotel grounds are nicely appointed with outdoor and trails to the beachside restaurant and bar. The room was comfortable. The bed was lovely. The hotel is located on a long stretch of wide, sandy beach. The bartenders at the beachside palapa bar were charming. The beachside restaurant had a lovely breakfast. A very calming and joyful place. The staff was very helpful in aiding our in process of flying onto the island and turning around the next morning to get to our boat departure.

It is a low-key resort with a lot of helpful staff that is geared toward making day-trip hiking into the jungle a fruitful but not exhausting adventure.
Location
The resort is at the edge of a national park and preserve. Family pods are of different species of monkeys can be seen from your balcony in the trees and bamboos groves and all throughout the surrounding jungle. A day hike can bring into close proximity of orangutans moving through the jungle canopy. The food is good and healthy. The location next to a river keeps the temperature more manageable than the nearby plains.
Staff
The resort is far from a city hub but the staff made sure that anything that was likely to be needed was made available to us. Everyone was friendly and took their time to answer questions or concerns.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Our room was simple and clean, and surprisingly comfortable for being on the edge of a jungle.

Dear John and Christie,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful and heartfelt review. I really enjoyed reading it, and it honestly means a lot to me to know how much you enjoyed the journey.

It was such a pleasure preparing this trip with you. From our first conversations, through all the questions, planning, and little adjustments along the way, I genuinely enjoyed putting everything together and making sure the journey felt right for you both. Knowing that you came home with so many special memories makes all the planning completely worthwhile.

I especially loved reading about your experiences with the people you met along the way. For me, that is such an important part of travelling through Indonesia, so it makes me very happy to know that this was such a memorable part of your experience. And of course, the macaque story will definitely be one to remember!

Thank you again for trusting me with your journey and for sharing it in such a beautiful way. It was a real pleasure working with you both, and I truly hope this won’t be your last adventure in Indonesia. You will always have a warm welcome here.

Warmest regards,

Myriam was always prompt and pleasant. Stephen/Hans (guide) and Ichung (driver) were also always prompt and pleasant. Unfortunately there seemed to be a real disconnect between the itinerary and guiding arranged with Myrium compared with what actually happened on the trip. Certain activities never happened (e.g. cooking class, becak ride, silk weaving demonstration/discussion, others) even after bringing them to Myriam's attention (e.g Fort museum tour). It's understandable that the itinerary would fluctuate for when things would organically happen (e.g funeral) but communication was really poor from the guide, even after I asked for more details each day so I would know what to prepare, what to wear, etc.

I would have rather had no meals included and paid for myself as the guide left me at the hotel each night and I would have preferred not to eat there for the 4 nights. I understand lunch stops need to be timed and placed strategically but that flexibility would have been nice. As it was, I didn't have three dinners because of some issues and timing.

I have never arranged a private tour previously and expected basics of 1)driving/navigating logistics, 2) hotel arrangements, and 3) proficient English and interactive dialogue about the sites visited. Only the first happened (no driving or navigation issues). There were consistent confusions at one of the hotels, which thankfully were eventually sorted. The biggest disappointment was my guide, who was a very nice man, but spoke limited English and rarely interacted with me. At one point we were lost in a forested area and he had us walk in circles three different times, trying to find a trail. Randomly walking through rice fields is one thing, and through villages, so we can interact with local people, but this seems to be walking just use time? And there was limited to no talking or explanation from the guide so it wasn't really informative or held interest to walk up a busy road with motorbikes flying by.

When we went to the first restaurant, I was handed an Indonesian menu and thought the guide would help me understand what the options were. He did not so I had to use Google translate for the rest of the trip and figure it out myself. I pretty much Googled each point we stopped at so I would know what I was looking at or what to look for at the site when it became quickly clear Steven/Hans would not be giving detail.. Long car rides were spent in silence or with driver & guide chatting. It's not that I expected to be entertained as a solo raveler, but I expected some interaction beyond 'Stop now. Lunch'.

I gave this experience 3 stars because, in the end, I did see the main highlights I wanted to see; however, I'm saddened this trip I entrusted to kimkim was so poorly fulfilled.

Dear Elizabeth,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such detailed and honest feedback. I’m truly sorry that the experience did not fully meet your expectations.

I’m glad to hear that the driving and logistics went smoothly, and that you found the team prompt and pleasant. However, I completely understand your disappointment regarding the activities that were not delivered, the lack of communication, and especially the limited English and interaction from the guide. A private guide should bring the destination to life, explain what you are seeing and help you understand the local culture — this clearly fell short.

South Sulawesi remains a more challenging region for us to operate in, with more limited tourism infrastructure and availability of experienced English-speaking guides. However, this should not be an excuse for the lack of communication or for confirmed activities not taking place.

Your feedback is therefore extremely valuable to us. It will help us improve our local partners, guide briefing and follow-up, and ensure that the itinerary and actual experience are much better aligned for future travelers.

I’m genuinely sorry that we did not deliver the experience you had entrusted us with, and I very much appreciate your honesty.

Regards,
Myriam

I have used Kimkim twice now. The first time was for a two-week trip to the Philippines about six months ago, and everything was so wonderful that when I decided to take my two daughters to Bali before one headed off to law school and the other started college, I didn’t hesitate to book through Kimkim again.

For this trip, I wanted something a little different. We were looking for eco-conscious luxury, beautiful nature, authentic cultural experiences, and places that felt a little off the beaten path. One thing I especially appreciated during my first Kimkim experience was being paired with a local travel specialist who really understood the destination and culture. I asked whether I could receive a quote from a different specialist this time, but was told I couldn’t. I decided to move forward anyway even though I would have liked to have shopped agencies. (Since Kim Kim is basically a matchmaker site between local agencies and the consumer of travel).

The itinerary was pretty basic and the activities were primarily “self guided”. The trip was definitely highly marked up.

The planning process was fine, and after a few itinerary adjustments we were on our way from the San Francisco Bay Area to Bali.

The biggest disappointment was the level of communication from our travel specialist. We were only checked in on once after arriving, and during that message she didn’t even remember my name. It lacked the warmth, attentiveness, and thoughtful personal touches that I experienced on my previous Kimkim trip and that friends have also described. It certainly didn’t ruin our vacation, but it was noticeably different from the level of service I had come to expect.

Now for the part that made this trip absolutely unforgettable:
Our driver, Made (pronounced “Mah-Dee”), was extraordinary. I was initially told that he was “just a driver” and that a guide would cost extra. In reality, Made became one of the biggest highlights of our entire vacation.

He consistently went far above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect. He was incredibly knowledgeable about Balinese culture, history, religion, traditions, food, and daily life. He answered every question we had with patience and enthusiasm, made wonderful recommendations that improved our itinerary, and was always thinking several steps ahead to make our days smoother and more enjoyable.

As three women traveling together, we always felt completely safe in his care. He was professional, respectful, kind, punctual, and genuinely invested in making sure we had the best possible experience. By the end of two weeks, he felt more like a trusted friend than simply our driver. If Kimkim has employees who represent the very best of what travel should be, Made is one of them. He deserves tremendous recognition.

The accommodations were also outstanding. Every hotel was an eco-luxury retreat, beautifully designed, surrounded by nature, and unique in its own way. The prices were very reasonable for travelers looking for this sort of resort . The markup from kimkim was huge and next time I will book these hotels myself and saved a lot of money. I never saw an itemized cost breakdown but did the math and I could have spent 1/2 the price booking myself. Each location had its own personality, yet all maintained the same high standard of comfort and hospitality that was standard for the areas where we stayed.

Even with my disappointment regarding communication from our travel specialist, this was still probably the best trip of my life. Bali is magical, and Kimkim put together an itinerary that allowed us to experience its beauty in a meaningful way. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to ensure every traveler receives the same level of personal attention during the planning process that Kimkim has built its reputation on.

And if you’re lucky enough to have Made as your driver, know that you’re in exceptional hands. He was worth his weight in gold and was one of the biggest reasons this became a trip my daughters and I will remember for the rest of our lives.

Hi Marie,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience.

I am truly delighted to read that this was "probably the best trip of your life" and that you and your daughters enjoyed such a memorable journey through Bali. It was also wonderful to hear your kind words about Made, who is indeed an exceptional member of our team.

One of Kimkim's greatest strengths is connecting travelers with local travel specialists, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to design a journey that matched your vision of authentic, eco-conscious Indonesia. Knowing that the itinerary, accommodations, and experiences made such a lasting impression is incredibly rewarding.

I am sorry that the communication during your trip did not fully meet your expectations. I always send a welcome message upon my travelers' arrival to make sure everything is going smoothly, as I did for your trip, and I remain fully available throughout the journey whenever assistance is needed. During your stay, I responded promptly to each of your questions, and as no issues were brought to my attention, I understood that you were enjoying your holiday as planned. Every traveler has different expectations—some appreciate regular check-ins, while others prefer to disconnect and reach out only if they need assistance—so I generally adapt to the latter approach unless requested otherwise.

Thank you again for your valuable feedback. I hope Bali has left you with wonderful memories, and that you'll return one day to discover even more of the incredible diversity Indonesia has to offer.

We had an amazing 2-week trip in Bali and Lombok! First, everyone loooooved Tejaprana Resort and Spa in Ubud. It was amazing in all ways -- the property, our rooms with pools overlooking the jungle, the spa, the food, the service, the passionfruit drinks! We stayed for 5 nights and could've stayed longer.
Mt Batur hike - It was exactly what we anticipated. Glad we had a beautiful sunrise as we knew that's not guaranteed. The hike was tough in parts but totally worth the 2am wake up call.
Bike ride from Kintamari -- This was in the top 3 activities for the group. Amazing day! The two guys from Infinity were wonderful. It was an exhilarating day cycling through the villages and countryside.
Cooking class -- Excellent. However, it lacked some "intimacy" because of its scale. There were 3 other classes happening at the same time. Good food in a beautiful home, though. [I'd skip the market tour next time.]
Overall food in Ubud -- We ate really well...from Compound Warung to Mozaic. Breakfast and snacks at Tejaprana were delicious!
The traffic in Ubud was NO JOKE. We were glad we hired Edi to get us around a couple of those nights. We did use Grab a few times and that worked out for us, as well.
Budi (tour guide)-- What a great guy! So full of life and an amazing sense of humor. We enjoyed our time with him which was only the one day (as we did Pasir Putih the following day instead of Lempuyang). We got to Besakih early before the crowds which was really nice. We had the place to ourselves. And Tirtagangga brought a smile to our faces. Who doesn't love feeding koi and eating ice cream? :)
Amed -- Stayed at the Griya which had pros and cons. I think we would have given it 5 stars had we not just stayed at Tejaprana. The coastal view from the pool made up for it, though. And good food in their restaurant.
We opted for a day at Pasir Putih beach instead of visiting Lempuyang due to the crowds. Edi (driver) took us. He seemed pleased that we wanted to go there. Wow what a beautiful beach. Quiet. Cheap, great warung food and beers. Perfect weather. Super relaxing. A memorable day for us.
Sunset boat ride and BBQ -- The boat ride was lovely and HOLY COW the BBQ was amazing. We didn't know what to expect but it exceeded our expectations! Quite a spread.
Our guide in Lombok-- Maliki! Too much to type but we will probably keep in touch with him. Really great guy. :)
Snorkeling was a good day. So many turtles which made it memorable...a really nice day on the Gilis and in the water.
The Mahagiri Villas in Sanur were great. We arrived and checked in and congregated at one villa, ordered a bunch of snacks and beer, sat in the pool. We were happy.
Then we pulled ourselves together and walked the backstreets of Sanur and wished we had had one more night there, fyi. Lovely town. Walkable. Hit the night market. Ate dinner on the promenade. It was an ideal final day.
And Edi (our driver).
EDI!
Loved him. He's great. We established so much trust with him. What a good guy.
Last but certainly not least -- Marc. Our travel specialist. We were so glad we took his advice on so many things...staying at Tejaprana (it wasn't our first choice), the bike ride he picked, hiring Edi for additional driving services. I could go on and on. Marc is a great communicator and we were tough customers. We highly recommend using Marc. We'd take this trip all over again.

Karangasem - Bali

This property needs some updates as it's showing its age, but the views from the private pools made up for some of the wear and tear (chipped furniture and paint, outlets that didn't work, chipped/moldy tiles in teh bathroom, etc.). The rooms are spacious with comfortable beds. We wished the bathrooms had been air-conditioned space. The idea of an outdoor shower is nice but not if it's just trapping mosquitoes (there's plexiglass over the "outdoor" shower). The bathroom itself was spacious with a huge tub. The common area/living room overlooking the pool was very nice. And the view from the pool is spectacular. The restaurant food was good but the service at the rooftop happy hour was lacking. 5 star? Maybe for Amed. All in all, it was a good stay, but our expectations were probably high because we had just come from an exquisite property in Ubud.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed review of your trip. Reading your comments truly made my day!

First of all, I would like to thank you and the entire group for the trust you placed in me and our team while planning your adventure through Bali and Lombok. It was a real pleasure helping you put this trip together, and knowing that it exceeded your expectations means a lot to all of us.

I absolutely loved reading about your experiences, from those jungle views and passionfruit drinks at Tejaprana, to the sunrise on Mount Batur, the cycling adventure through the villages, the relaxing day at Pasir Putih, and your final day in Sanur. It sounds like you embraced every moment of the journey and created some wonderful memories together.

I was especially happy to read your kind words about Budi, Maliki, and Edi. They are not only fantastic professionals but also genuinely wonderful people, and I know they will be incredibly proud to hear your feedback. I will make sure your comments are shared with them.

Thank you as well for trusting my recommendations regarding Tejaprana, the cycling tour, and arranging extra days with Edi. As a travel specialist, there is no better compliment than hearing that you would take the trip all over again.

On behalf of everyone involved in your journey, thank you once again for traveling with us. It was a privilege to be part of your Indonesian adventure, and we hope to welcome you back someday to discover even more of this incredible country.

Best regards,
Marc

The liveaboard cruise around Flores and Komodo was a fantastic highlight of the trip. The combination of on-land hikes with beautiful views and encounters with Komodo Dragons, along with snorkeling on great beaches, made it an exceptional experience. The boat and crew were nice, with the highlight being the knowledgeable team pointing out wildlife and ensuring we could take great pictures.

But trips where we watched someone make palm sugar and tempeh were not. The hotels were absolutely great and we wished that we could linger in them a little longer like the one in Jiwa Jawa. I know that this was an adventure trip but I wish that we had some time to explore local markets. I like to buy a souvenir to remember my trip.

Dear Minu,

Thank you very much for your detailed review and your kind words about the guides and hotels. I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the variety of the trip.

As our time was limited, I aimed to include a range of experiences so you could make the most of your stay, though I completely understand that some days may have felt a bit full.

It was a pleasure organizing your journey, and I hope to welcome you back to Indonesia one day!
