The Kaikoura Coast is renowned for its abundant marine life. Due to the teeming food supply in its icy seas, whales, seals and dolphins are frequently spotted year-round in the area (the name Kaikoura, given to this area by Maori, literally translates to “to eat crayfish,” from “food” [kai] and “crayfish” [koura]).
