Getting from Amalfi to Maiori—which has the longest beach on the Amalfi Coast—isn't difficult, but it might take longer than you think. This is especially true during July and August.

There are no rail lines on the Amalfi Coast, so your transportation options are limited to car, bus, and, during the summer, boat. There is only one road between Amalfi and Maiori, Strada Statale 163 (State Road 163), and SS163 can be very congested during the summer months and on weekends.

It's good to note that although the towns are only three miles apart, bicycling or walking along SS163 can be dangerous. The road is steep and winding, and traffic lanes are narrow. Many buses travel along SS163 during the summer months, leaving little room for cyclists and hikers. You will have better luck during late autumn, winter, and early spring.

By Boat

During tourist season (April through October), Travelmar offers six daily departures to Maiori from Amalfi and Cooperativo Sant'Andrea offers seven. The boat trip takes about 15 minutes and will give you a nice view of the Amalfi Coast. Book a Travelmar ticket online if you want to depart Amalfi on a specific day and time.

By Car, Taxi, or Private Transfer

Taking a taxi or hiring a private driver are good alternatives to driving from Amalfi to Maiori yourself. Many travelers choose to do so in order to avoid crowded buses and look at the beautiful views along the way.

Both Amalfi and Maiori have established a Zona a Traffico Limitato (limited traffic zone), or ZTL, in their busy tourist areas. Unless your vehicle is registered on each city's approved vehicle list, you will get a ticket if you drive your car into the ZTL. Parking can be problematic during the summer, too. If you do choose to drive, take SS163 in the direction of Salerno. During the winter months, driving from Amalfi to Maiori is a much more relaxing experience.

By Bus

SITA buses ply SS163 daily, so you should have no trouble taking the bus from Amalfi to Maiori. Validate your ticket in the bright yellow machine when you board the bus. During the summer, SITA buses are extremely crowded, but at least your trip from Amalfi to Maiori is very short.
