The distance between Cape Town in the Western Cape to the Klein Karoo—where the capital town of Oudtshoorn is located—is 261 miles (420 km). Made famous in the late 19th and early 20th century as the Ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn has now become a tourist spot with many points of interest in the surrounding areas. Driving is convenient and easy with a few different routes you can take. Public transportation is also an option but will add a few extra hours to your journey time.

By Air and Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 2 hours

Combining air travel and driving is the quickest way to reach Oudtshoorn with a travel time of 2 hours. Direct flights take fifty minutes from Cape Town to the city of George on the Western Cape. There are several flights offered by different airline carriers. From the George airport, the drive takes around an hour on the N12 highway.  

By Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 5 hours

Road tripping or taking a private transfer is a relatively easy and comfortable drive on the famous Route 62 and N1 to reach Oudtshoorn. Shortly after departing, you’ll pass by vineyards before heading into the arid, mountainous area with beautiful vistas and curvy roads. 

You’ll pass through the Hawequas Mountain Catchment Area and soon after, on your left-hand side you’ll pass by the Zuurberg Nature Reserve right before the town of Barrydale. Barrydale is a small town and is a nature lover’s paradise. This is a good place to stretch your legs, have a drink and admire the rugged mountain landscape.

Shortly before reaching Oudtshoorn, you’ll pass by the Paardenberg Nature Reserve.

This route has tolls and the journey takes around 5 hours. There are also alternative routes without toll roads, just keep in mind that travel time may be longer.

By Bus

Duration: 8 hours

Going by bus is an option but be prepared for a longer journey time—around 8 hours. Bazbus operates buses 5 days a week with an early morning departure. Booking your ticket in advance is recommended to guarantee a seat. Keep in mind, availability is also dependent on the season.
