The distance between Florence and Lucca is only 57 miles (92 km), and well worth the short trip—there are many things to see and do in this historic city located at the foot of the Apuan Alps. Travelers have several transport options, and the best way to make the trip is by train. While it is 20 minutes longer than driving, it gets you within the city walls. Hiring a private transfer is another good option, allowing for the flexibility of driving without dealing with the legitimate headache of parking in Lucca.

By Train

Duration 1 hour and 20 minutes 

The train is the most time and cost-effective way to get to these two cities. Keep in mind that the trip from Florence to Lucca is one of the busiest ones to make by train, but it is also the most efficient. There are a number of train options that depart from several origin points via Italia Rail, though Santa Maria Novella station in Florence is the main hub for commuters and tourists alike with many trains departing from there hourly. 

Regional trains traveling from Florence to Lucca are usually direct and do not require reservations and offer you the option of first or second class. While it takes 20 minutes longer by train than by car, it brings you inside the city's walls, which is a big plus if you are traveling light. Depending on your class preference, you just find a seat in your chosen class and enjoy the ride.

While the regional train is direct, it does not have a cafe car or many other amenities, so keep that in mind before purchasing tickets and plan ahead accordingly. 

By Rental Car or Private Transfer

While driving allows you the quickest travel time between both cities, it also does come with some other things to keep in mind. If you choose to drive, beware that there are a number of restrictions when it comes to parking and driving within the city limits. Hiring a private transfer eliminates the stress, but if you do wish to drive yourself, there are a number of rental car options such as Hertz and Europcar available.

One thing to also keep in mind is that the kind of car you rent stick versus automatic etc and the size will affect the rental price. This way of getting around does allow you to see more and explore parts of the city and outside you might not normally experience. 

By Bus 

Duration: 1 hour and 15-40 minutes

Depending on the bus lines bus offers travelers another way to get around as well. It is cost-efficient with minimal stops, but it may take a bit longer depending on traffic. Bus companies such as Vai Bus operate throughout the day and will provide usually wifi, comfortable seating and a bathroom on board and is a very affordable option.
