The journey from the capital city of Lisbon to Óbidos is a distance of 53 miles (85 km) and takes a little over an hour. 

Going by bus is the fastest and most convenient way to get there with frequent bus departures daily. Driving is an option and is great if you prefer having flexibility and going at your own pace.

By Bus

Duration: 1 hour

Riding the bus is an efficient and convenient option taking an hour to reach Óbidos while you sit back and relax enjoying the view. The express buses depart frequently from the Campo Verde station, which is easily reached by the green and yellow metro line. Buses are operated by the Rodotejo bus company and the route is referred to as the Green Express or Rapida Verde.  There is free wi-fi on the bus. 

During the weekdays, bus departures are frequent with service beginning in the morning until late at night. On weekends, bus service is reduced. Tickets can be purchased on-board or at the ticket office in Rodoviária do Oeste.

By Car

Duration: 1 hour

Driving is straightforward, with the fastest route taking a little over an hour on the A8 highway, which is a toll road.  

There are alternative routes if you want to avoid paying tolls. However, be prepared for an additional hour of driving to reach Óbidos. 

Driving within the town walls is not allowed so plan accordingly before arrival. 

Make sure to register your car the first time you enter a toll road. On most main highways in Portugal, there is a special area where you can register your car before continuing onto the toll booth. Everything is done electronically- connecting your license plate to your credit card number. 

By Train

Duration: 2 -2.5 hours

Traveling by train is an option,a lthough it is not the fastest way to arrive. Local trains go to Óbidos and travel time is around 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Trains are operated by Comboios Regionais with departures from the Santa Apolonia Station and Rossio Station but do pay attention to the schedule as departures are infrequent. You can purchase your ticket online or at the train station.
