What you'll do

There are few better ways to observe the local wildlife in Nepal's Chitwan National Park than on a wildlife safari. This full-day adventure begins with walking alongside elephants (mainly Indian elephants protected from poachers within the park's borders) in the dense jungle, where you'll get to monitor the gentle giants' routines—from what they eat to how they communicate with each other, and more. Throughout the up-close experience, the elephants' mahouts (handlers) will point out interesting facts about the ecosystem and even offer demonstrations on how to care for them.

Next, you'll switch gears and board a traditional carved-out wooden canoe for a river safari to spot wildlife and birds along the river banks. Common animals in Chitwan include the greater one-horned rhinoceros, four types of deer (spotted, hog, sambar, and barking), and a wide variety of birdlife. With a bit of luck, there's always the chance of glimpsing a leopard, sloth bear, and even the elusive Bengal tiger, although sighting this last animal is rare.
