What you'll do

Your thrilling excursion through the Greater Kruger Park will likely begin in the afternoon after a leisurely al fresco lunch or tea at the lodge. Then, you may board your safari vehicle and meet your experienced guides. As you head out into the bush, your guides may share their extensive knowledge of the region and its inhabitants, enriching your understanding of this captivating ecosystem. They'll do their best to track the Big Five (elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes) so you can glimpse these creatures in their natural habitat.

You can prepare your cameras for the unfolding spectacle as the light softens. The shifting light transforms the park into a picturesque landscape, presenting the perfect opportunity for wildlife photography. You might come across a pride of lions basking in the shade, a pack of wild dogs on the prowl, or a dazzle of zebra stirring up dust. High above, you may spot birds of prey gracefully wheeling in the sky.

As the day passes to the evening, you can enjoy the beauty of an African sunset. You'll likely pause your journey to admire the view with a refreshing sundowner drink in hand. As you sip, you can listen to the symphony of sounds as the bush comes alive in the cool of the evening. Imagine the sound of a lion's roar, the giraffe's thumping in full flight, or the giddy giggles of hyenas fighting over their latest kill.

After sunset, as dusk gives way to the moonlit night, the park transitions into a different world. Your guides will likely switch their focus to the nocturnal predators as they begin their nightly hunt. Keep your eyes trained for the elusive leopard, silently stalking its prey in a moonlit riverbed or a pride of lions emerging from the shadows.

As you continue your journey, you may spot some of the park's smaller, nocturnal inhabitants. Look out for bushbabies swinging from branch to branch in the moonlit trees, civets and genets slinking in the shadows, the white-tailed mongoose scurrying along, or a prickle of porcupines foraging for food. After you experience the bush after dark, your guide may drive you back to the lodge in time for you to enjoy dinner and reflect on your afternoon safari experience.

Each game drive offered something different, and Golden and Nkosi were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and deeply respectful of the animals. They went above and beyond to locate the wildlife, explain animal behavior, and ensure that everyone in our group had a great view.

Seeing the Big Five was a dream come true, and the entire safari exceeded our expectations. It gave us memories that will last a lifetime, and we would highly recommend the Timbavati Game Reserve to anyone visiting South Africa.
