5.0 (10 reviews)
Learn all there is to know about cider on a guided walk through a centuries-old orchard, followed by a tasting with food pairing.

Overview

Immerse yourself in the world of cider with a guided 90-minute tasting and lunch at an organic orchard overlooking the Sognefjord, Norway's oldest fruit-growing region. You'll walk amid the family-run orchard with your host, learning about apple cultivation and cider-making traditions that date to the 1100s, before sitting down to a tasting flight. You'll sample five distinct ciders paired with thoughtfully prepared, filling bites, gaining an appreciation for the diverse flavors of sweet, acidic, and bitter apples. This experience is suited to foodies and anyone looking for a unique outing; cider, after all, is the "wine" of Norway.

The storybook village of Balestrand, one of our all-time favorite locations in Norway's fjord region, is the setting of this exceptional tasting. The heirloom orchards of Ciderhuset, first planted by the owner's great-grandfather Andreas, overlooks the blue Sognefjord and the property's wraparound gardens—a vantage particularly enjoyed from the cider house where you'll sit down to sip the namesake elixir and sample Chef Tuba's innovative creations.

Highlights

  • Discover centuries-old cider-making traditions at a historic farm in the Sognefjord
  • Stroll through an organic orchard featuring over 1,000 apple gene varieties
  • Learn the history of fruit growing in the region and how weather impacts production and quality
  • Enjoy a proper lunch of five savory (and creative) dishes paired with five distinct ciders
  • Look over the Sognefjord from your idyllic setting in a glass house amid apple trees

What you'll do

Once you arrive at Ciderhuset, you'll be met with a friendly host who will give you a brief tour of the fruit farm, active since 1922 when the orchard was planted. As you explore, you'll learn about the history of apple cultivation and cider production in the region—the oldest fruit-growing area in the country—from its origins in the 12th century to modern-day practices. The walk offers insight into how local weather patterns and apple varieties—from sweet dessert apples to sharp cooking apples and bitter cider apples—shape the final product.

Next, you'll settle into the cider house itself, where the guided tasting (and lunching) begins. You'll sample five different ciders, tasting the full spectrum of flavors from light and refreshing "veranda" cider to tannin-rich expressions, each matched with a small savory dish of straight-from-the-property ingredients. While the menu varies seasonally, typical plates may include cigar börek, meatballs, smoked salmon, vegetable cakes, and a fruit-based dessert—served as five small plates, but filling enough to count as a proper lunch. Dietary restrictions and allergies can usually be accommodated with advance notice, and nonalcoholic options like juice or lemonade are also available.

After the cider session, bid farewell to your host and enjoy the scenic walk back down to Balestrand.

What a wonderful experience! This is a fun, informative, interesting, and very tasty activity! The owner showed us part of the apple orchard as he explained the history of their business, the kinds of apples grown, the cider making process, etc. He was lively and interesting. Then, we had a tasting of 5 types of cider with food pairings (we did the late afternoon cider pairings with snacks). The food and cider were delicious and the setting, sitting on their beautiful terrace overlooking part... Read more

Tips for future travelers

One of our party had a difficult time walking to this activity. There is no public transportation in Balestrand and the hotel was not helpful.

I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I experienced the Cider Tasting & Lunch. This was a 12/10 experience - 6 Stars without a doubt. This was an incredible experience. You walk 15-minutes from the town center. There are over 1,000 genes of apples sitting on the orchard, and we were taught plenty.
7,500 different kinds of apples in the world.
In Norway, the term difference between alcoholic and non-alcoholic cider is simply saying cider or juice, unlike the U.S.

The ciders produced onsite had 4.7-16% alcohol. I was able to sample ciders on each end of that spectrum.
Fun fact; heavy rain seasons may produce great amounts of product that year but they are actually not good, they cause water weight to hurt the trees and generally exhaust them, so the following 2 seasons after a heavy rain will only provide minimal amounts of product.
The food pairings for lunch with each cider were perfectly crafted.
