Explore Hallingskarvet National Park

Overview

This is an opportunity to explore one of the geological gems of central Norway: Hallingskarvet National Park. This 170-square-mile (450-square-km) protected area was formed over various ice ages and, today, includes high plateaus, glaciers, and towering mountain peaks—the highest of which is Folarskardnuten, which rises 6,342 feet (1,933 meters). It's home to rare and threatened vegetation, like whitlow grass, and exotic fauna like wild reindeer.

It's also a popular site for nature excursions. There are several hiking trails here for every age and fitness level. Some are easy (less than 2 miles/3.5 km), and some are more difficult (up to 10 miles (16 km) or more). For a bigger adrenaline rush, there are also dozens of bike trails ranging in length and difficulty. A good place to start is renting a bike from Haugastøl Turistsenter in Haugastøl—Norway's largest provider of rental bikes. The friendly staff will provide everything you need for a day of biking, including protective gear, tutorials, and area maps.
