Reindeer Safari in East Iceland, Egilsstadir

Overview

East Iceland is home to the country's only herd of wild reindeer. The species was imported to Iceland in the 18th  century, but they currently only reside in the eastern stretches. Starting from the town of Eglisstadir, you can enjoy a unique excursion that allows you to see the wild reindeer in their natural habitat.

Sightings are best in the wintertime, as this is when the herds partake in their annual migration into the valleys of East Iceland. A professional wildlife tracker will lead you into the wilderness. At the same time, you'll learn more about this unique species, an animal that has mastered living in the wild and unpredictable northern climate. You'll also, of course, enjoy the region's incredible scenery, which includes snow-capped mountains and deep fjords.
